1X’s NEO is real, but it is not yet a proven autonomous housekeeper. The home humanoid robot is available to preorder for $20,000 or $499 per month, with U.S. deliveries advertised to begin in 2026. Early units are expected to have only “basic autonomy,” and 1X says a remote human expert may supervise unfamiliar chores through the robot.
That human-in-the-loop system is the important catch. NEO may eventually learn tasks such as laundry, tidying and object retrieval, but buyers are not simply purchasing a finished robotic cleaner that independently handles every household job.
What is 1X NEO?
NEO is a humanoid home robot from 1X Technologies. Unlike a robot vacuum or smart speaker, it is designed to move through human-built rooms, manipulate objects and respond to voice requests.
1X describes NEO as a general-purpose domestic robot that can navigate a home, retrieve objects, open doors, organize shelves, fold laundry, clean rooms and recharge itself. The company also advertises a mobile app for scheduling chores, communication and monitoring.

NEO was announced for consumer preorders in October 2025. The company’s announcement says U.S. deliveries are planned to begin in 2026, with additional markets expected from 2027. That is a delivery target—not proof that broad consumer shipping has already begun.
The headline price is only part of the commitment
| Option | Advertised price | Stated details |
|---|---|---|
| Early Access ownership | $20,000 | Three-year warranty, premium support and priority delivery |
| Standard subscription | $499 per month | Monthly service with standard delivery |
| Preorder deposit | $200 | Listed as fully refundable |
The official order page is the best source for current pricing and offer terms. At $499 per month, the subscription reaches $20,000 after roughly 40.1 months. That is only a mathematical comparison: the ownership and subscription plans may not provide identical support, Expert Mode access, connectivity, repairs or software services.
Other costs and conditions also need clarification before a buyer commits:
- Sales tax, shipping and installation
- Maintenance after the three-year warranty
- Battery replacement and repairs
- Connectivity or cloud-service requirements
- Whether Expert Mode is included indefinitely with ownership
- What happens if 1X changes subscription pricing or discontinues a service
The company’s legal page contains the applicable preorder and privacy framework, so prospective buyers should read those terms rather than treating the promotional headline as a complete contract.

1X advertises “Scheduled Expert Mode” for tasks NEO has not yet learned. During a scheduled session, a human expert can remotely supervise the robot’s actions and help it perform an unfamiliar chore. The company presents this as part of a system for teaching NEO new abilities.
That does not necessarily mean every movement is manually controlled. There is an important difference between:
- Autonomous execution: NEO perceives and performs the task without a remote operator.
- Supervised autonomy: NEO performs the task while a human monitors or intervenes.
- Teleoperation: a remote person directly pilots the robot.
- Learning by demonstration: a human-guided action generates data that may help the system repeat the task later.
The available product description does not establish how often Expert Mode will be needed, how much control the expert has during each chore or whether every session requires owner approval. It does establish that early owners should expect limited initial autonomy and human assistance for at least some tasks.
That makes NEO closer to an early-access robotics platform than a mature appliance with a fixed and predictable feature set. A chore shown in a controlled demonstration is not automatically a chore NEO can reliably perform in every cluttered home.

If a remote expert is supervising NEO, that person must receive enough sensor information to understand the robot’s surroundings. In practical terms, an operator may be able to see through the robot’s cameras and hear relevant audio while it is inside a private home. Independent coverage has highlighted that risk.
Before buying, consumers should seek clear answers to these questions:
- Does the owner approve every Expert Mode session?
- Can 1X connect for safety, maintenance or troubleshooting without approval?
- What indicators show that remote supervision is active?
- Are video or audio feeds recorded?
- How long are recordings retained, and can owners delete them?
- Are sessions used to train future models?
- Can guests and household members opt out?
- What can NEO do if the internet connection fails?
The existence of remote assistance is disclosed; calling it completely “secret” is inaccurate. The real concern is how frequently it will be used, what the operator can access and what data is retained.

What can NEO actually do?
1X’s examples include retrieving objects, opening doors, folding laundry, organizing shelves, cleaning rooms, responding to voice commands and charging itself. However, the company’s own material indicates that early units arrive with basic autonomy and become more capable over time.
“Cleaning the house” is therefore too broad a description. Picking up an object, folding laundry, vacuuming, mopping, handling chemicals and cleaning a wet bathroom are separate engineering problems. The company has not publicly demonstrated independent performance for every household chore in ordinary homes.
It is also unsafe to assume that NEO can handle hot pans, knives, broken glass, toilets, bodily fluids, pools or outdoor weather. The published body rating is IP44, while the hands are listed as IP68. That does not make the complete robot waterproof.
Published specifications—and what they do not prove
| Specification | Published figure |
|---|---|
| Height | 5 feet 6 inches |
| Weight | 66 pounds |
| Advertised lift | 154 pounds |
| Advertised carry capacity | 55 pounds |
| Arm payload | 18 pounds |
| Battery | 842 Wh |
| Advertised runtime | Four hours |
| Walking speed | 1.4 m/s |
| Advertised noise | 22 dB |
| Body rating | IP44 |
| Hands rating | IP68 |
NEO is also described as having a soft body, low-inertia tendon drives and no pinch points in its joints. Those design choices may reduce certain risks, but they are company claims and do not make a 66-pound moving machine risk-free.
A lift rating does not prove that NEO can recognize fragile objects. A four-hour runtime does not mean four hours of continuous cleaning: walking, manipulation, task difficulty, charging and remote assistance all affect the practical duty cycle. Self-charging is convenient, but it is not the same as all-day housekeeping.

Families should consider the robot’s physical behavior as carefully as its software. Important questions include:
Rank #3
- Fits Pet Owners and Hard Floors: With a tangle-free suction port, V2 robot vacuum focuses on picking up hair without tangle; It also tackles dirt, crumbs and debris effectively on hardwood, tile, laminate, stone and low pile carpet
- Ultra-Slim Design: The 2.99-inch low profile allows the V2 robot vacuum cleaner to easily clean under beds, sofas, and other furniture
- Friendly Remote Control: The V2 vacuum robot equipped a physical remote control, no Wi-Fi connection is required for operation. Start cleaning easily via the remote or one-touch button, simple to operate for all family members
- Multiple Cleaning Modes: The V2 robot vacuum cleaner features multiple cleaning modes including auto clean, spot clean, and edge clean for thorough coverage
- Schedule Cleaning & Automatic Charging: V2 vacuum robot can run routine cleaning automatically based on preset schedule, it cleans up to 120 minutes on a single charge and automatically returns to the charging dock when the battery is low
- Can an owner stop it immediately?
- What happens if it falls or loses balance?
- How does it behave around children and pets?
- Can it use stairs, elevators and narrow doorways?
- Does it work on carpets, thresholds and cluttered floors?
- What happens when it encounters a wet surface or fragile object?
- Can a remote operator be disconnected instantly?
- What insurance or liability arrangements apply after damage or injury?
Homes with stairs, pets, young children, fragile furnishings or heavy clutter may be especially challenging. Buyers should not treat “soft body” or “no pinch points” as independent certification that the robot is safe in every domestic setting.
What happens when NEO fails?
Real homes contain edge cases that demonstrations often avoid. NEO may fail to identify an object, become stuck, misunderstand a voice command, drop something, run low on power or need assistance when it encounters a pet, child, stair, narrow passage or unfamiliar piece of furniture.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Software updates may improve performance, but they may also change behavior. A skill learned in one room may not transfer perfectly to another home. Owners should also ask about repair turnaround, replacement hands and actuators, battery life, service intervals and what happens if cloud services are unavailable.
Who should buy—and who should wait?
NEO may appeal to wealthy early adopters, robotics enthusiasts, researchers and households willing to tolerate unfinished software. It could also interest people exploring assistive technology, provided the robot can reliably perform the specific tasks they need and the household accepts remote supervision.
Waiting is more sensible for anyone who:
- Needs dependable cleaning immediately
- Does not want remote humans accessing household sensor feeds
- Expects a one-time purchase without service dependence
- Requires firm guarantees about privacy and data retention
- Cannot tolerate downtime or experimental behavior
- Wants independent reviews before spending $20,000
For a specific chore, a robot vacuum, mop, laundry service or conventional cleaner may be more predictable. NEO’s argument is versatility, not proven superiority at any one task.
What about cheaper humanoid robots?
Unitree’s R1 and G1 are not straightforward substitutes for NEO. Their official materials emphasize development, research, optional computing and secondary development rather than a managed home-service package with centralized support and remote Expert assistance.
Some configurations have limited battery life, and Unitree’s safety guidance makes clear that humanoid robots have meaningful operating limitations. A lower purchase price does not turn a development platform into a turnkey housekeeper.
Final verdict
NEO is a genuine pre-orderable home humanoid robot, not a fictional viral product. But the $20,000 headline should not be read as the price of a fully autonomous robotic maid.
Early units are advertised with basic autonomy. For unfamiliar chores, a remote 1X expert may supervise or help operate the robot, potentially using the session to improve future capabilities. That creates both a privacy issue and a practical question about how much work the robot itself can do.
The most accurate description is this: NEO is an ambitious early-access home robot whose usefulness is expected to grow over time. Buyers are paying for access to that developing system—and accepting uncertain delivery timing, evolving capability, service dependence and the presence of a camera-equipped machine in their home.
