This $2,000 Bed Supposedly “Heals” With Spatial Audio and Low-Frequency Vibrations

The Opus SoundBed was an immersive relaxation platform, not a clinically proven healing bed. Here’s how it worked, what its own terms disclosed and what buyers should know.

Short answer: the Opus SoundBed was a real $1,999 luxury wellness product announced in June 2021, but it was not a proven medical treatment. It combined headphones, guided meditation, spatially arranged audio and low-frequency vibration to create an immersive relaxation experience. “Healing” was marketing language—not an established conclusion that the device could repair the body, treat disease or reliably resolve anxiety, pain or insomnia.

What was the Opus SoundBed?

Opus Immersive announced the SoundBed in June 2021 at a reported launch price of $1,999. Engadget reported that preorders were eligible for a temporary $500 discount. The device was designed as a foldable, bed-like platform that could be stored as a hexagonal conversation piece, rather than as a conventional mattress or overnight sleeping system.

Its intended uses were guided meditation, relaxation, introspection and immersive sensory experiences. Sessions were delivered through the OPUS Connect app and headphones while vibration transducers embedded in the platform stimulated different areas of the body. Engadget described the company’s “Journeys” as guided meditation workshops lasting roughly seven to 60 minutes, with shorter sessions aimed at relaxation and mood elevation.

That distinction matters: the SoundBed was better understood as a reclining sensory-therapy platform than as a bed that replaced ordinary sleep furniture.

How the audio and vibration worked

The product combined several separate technologies:

  • Low-frequency vibration: transducers converted electrical signals into mechanical movement that users could feel through the platform.
  • Headphone audio: spatial audio created the impression that sounds were coming from different directions or moving around the listener.
  • Guided content: the app supplied meditation and other custom-composed sessions.
  • Multiple vibration zones: Opus support material described five independently resonating zones intended to create differentiated sensations across the body.

Opus also said SoundBed sessions were mixed in 5.2-channel audio, rather than being ordinary two-channel stereo tracks. Its support material described “spatial sound” and “spatial vibration” as separate components.

In other words, spatial audio did not mean that sound was medically directed through the body. It meant immersive headphone sound was paired with physical vibration in different parts of the platform. The physical mechanism is plausible; the medical conclusions are a separate question.

What did “healing” mean?

Opus used terms including “sound healing,” “emotional fitness,” well-being and “healing journeys.” Those phrases describe a wellness philosophy and an intended subjective experience. They do not, by themselves, establish a clinical treatment effect.

A defensible translation of the marketing is that the SoundBed was designed to help some users relax, meditate, focus inward or feel a temporary change in mood. That is very different from saying it heals tissue, treats a disease, cures insomnia or modifies an anxiety disorder.

A person may feel calmer after a session. That benefit could come from the music, the guided meditation, quiet time, expectation, the tactile sensation, or a combination of those factors. Feeling better is meaningful, but it does not identify a disease-specific mechanism or prove that the device works better than ordinary meditation, music, rest or massage.

What does the research support?

There is credible evidence that music and relaxation techniques can reduce anxiety in some circumstances. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says studies support music for reducing anxiety and that relaxation approaches may help people with chronic medical problems or during medical procedures.

That evidence supports a modest claim: music and relaxation may be useful tools for some people. It does not prove that the Opus SoundBed itself treats anxiety or any other condition. NCCIH also cautions that relaxation techniques are not substitutes for established care and can occasionally produce negative experiences.

The broader field of vibroacoustic therapy has a similar evidence problem. A BMJ Open scoping review of vibroacoustic therapy for pain found research that was heterogeneous and too sparse to determine which properties were beneficial. The review called for better randomized controlled trials and more consistent reporting of frequency, amplitude, pulsation and loudness.

That does not prove that vibroacoustic experiences do nothing. It does mean that research involving different equipment, frequencies, intensities, session lengths and clinical settings cannot automatically be transferred to one consumer product. Evidence for a general relaxation response is not evidence that SoundBed heals the body.

Opus’s own terms are the most important caveat

Opus’s SoundBed terms of service say the service is provided “as is” and “as available.” More significantly, the terms disclaim representations that SoundBed provides specific medical, psychological, physiological or therapeutic benefits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The terms also state that “no studies yet validate efficacy claims” concerning SoundBed biometrics, sleep data or related health measures. Users assume responsibility for decisions and outcomes related to their mental, emotional or physical state.

Those statements should not be dismissed as routine legal fine print. They directly limit what a buyer can reasonably infer from the product’s wellness language. A company can sell an immersive relaxation experience while acknowledging that its health outcomes have not been clinically validated.

Was the SoundBed FDA-approved?

No reviewed source establishes FDA clearance or approval for the SoundBed as a treatment device. Engadget noted the absence of FDA verification in its 2021 coverage.

That is not the same as saying the FDA formally rejected the product or found it ineffective. The FDA explains that products using mechanical vibration or other energy fields may fall under medical-device regulation when they are intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevent disease. Regulatory treatment depends partly on how a product is intended and marketed.

The careful conclusion is therefore: the available sources do not establish FDA clearance for SoundBed’s purported wellness or healing effects.

Practical ownership issues

Price and availability

$1,999 was the reported historical launch price in 2021, not a verified current price. Current hardware availability and ordering status could not be confirmed from the available sources. Support documentation remaining online does not prove that new units are in stock, shipping or supported on the same terms.

Anyone encountering an old preorder page, deposit request or resale listing should verify that the company can transfer ownership, activate the device and provide support before paying.

Subscription and content access

The terms indicate that premium content and features may depend on an ongoing subscription. A buyer should establish exactly what remains usable after cancellation, whether sessions can be downloaded and what happens if the service changes or ends.

Personal music was limited

As of a December 2023 update, Opus said users could not yet play personal music directly through the SoundBed. The feature remained in research and development without a definite timeline. The product was therefore not simply a premium tactile subwoofer for any music a buyer chose; its experience depended heavily on Opus’s custom-composed sessions.

Warranty terms changed

Opus’s warranty policy stated that devices ordered before January 1, 2024 received two years of coverage, while devices ordered thereafter received one year from delivery. Coverage applied to defects in materials and workmanship under normal use, with exclusions for misuse, alteration, neglect, unauthorized parts and normal wear.

Because those terms may not represent a confirmed August 2026 sales policy, buyers should obtain the applicable warranty in writing before ordering.

Space, sound and sensation

The foldable design helped with storage, but the SoundBed still required floor space and a suitable place to recline. Low-frequency vibration can travel through floors and furniture, potentially disturbing people in adjoining rooms or neighboring units. Headphones may also be inconvenient for users who dislike wearing them.

The experience will not suit everyone. Some people may find tactile vibration relaxing; others may find it distracting or overstimulating. Opus’s terms warn that immersive media can trigger seizures in susceptible individuals. Anyone with a seizure history, pregnancy, an implanted medical device, significant cardiovascular concerns, acute pain or another relevant medical condition should ask a qualified clinician before using an intense vibration device.

Who might reasonably consider one?

The SoundBed could make sense as discretionary wellness equipment for someone who:

  • Already enjoys guided meditation or sensory relaxation.
  • Values an immersive audio-and-tactile experience more than low cost.
  • Has adequate space and can tolerate headphones and physical vibration.
  • Understands that the purchase is for relaxation, not medical treatment.
  • Can verify current stock, support, return terms, subscription requirements and warranty coverage.

It might also interest a wellness studio or practitioner seeking a distinctive sensory experience. That still does not turn the equipment into a clinically validated treatment system.

Who should skip it?

Skip the SoundBed if the main goal is to treat persistent insomnia, chronic pain, depression, an anxiety disorder, trauma symptoms or another diagnosed condition. A wellness device should not replace psychotherapy, medication, medical evaluation, physical therapy or a sleep assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also a poor fit for buyers who need peer-reviewed, product-specific evidence, have limited space, share walls and floors with vibration-sensitive neighbors, dislike headphones or cannot determine what happens to the hardware and content after a subscription ends.

Cheaper ways to test the idea

If the appeal is guided relaxation rather than full-body vibration, try a conventional meditation app such as Headspace or Calm first. The approximately $70 annual pricing mentioned in 2021 coverage is historical, so check current prices directly.

If the tactile element is the attraction, hobbyist buyers can investigate bass shakers or tactile transducers. These setups are generally less polished and may require compatible furniture, amplification and installation. They also provide no automatic therapeutic benefit.

Practitioners can compare professional vibroacoustic equipment, such as the four-transducer Pro Sound Bed Kit, which was listed at $1,499.99 when accessed for the research behind this article. It is not necessarily a turnkey consumer meditation product or an equivalent to SoundBed.

The verdict

The Opus SoundBed was a genuine attempt to combine spatial headphone audio, guided meditation and localized low-frequency vibration into a premium relaxation platform. The vibration is real, and relaxation or music may help some people feel less stressed.

But the evidence does not justify calling it a healing bed. Vibroacoustic research remains limited and inconsistent, and Opus’s own terms say that studies had not validated SoundBed-specific efficacy claims. Treat the device as luxury wellness hardware—potentially enjoyable for the right user, but not a $2,000 medical treatment or a proven way to heal the body.
