Short answer: The headline describes a laboratory perovskite–silicon tandem cell, not a rooftop panel that homeowners can currently install and expect to generate 60 percent more electricity. LONGi researchers reported a 33.89% power-conversion efficiency in 2024, versus roughly 20–22% for the commercial panels used as the comparison. The record cells were smaller than a postage stamp, so module-scale output, durability, cost and availability remain separate engineering questions.
Sebastian Bonilla’s September 28, 2024 article for WIRED, republished from The Conversation, describes the result this way: “The new record-breaking tandem cells can capture an additional 60 percent of solar energy.” That is an energy-capture comparison with conventional panels, not a guarantee about the electricity from every finished residential system.
What LONGi actually achieved
A LONGi research team reported a 33.89% power-conversion efficiency for a perovskite–silicon tandem solar cell in a Nature paper in 2024. Efficiency is the share of incoming sunlight converted into electrical power under test conditions; it is not the same as a household’s annual energy yield.
The comparison in Bonilla’s article uses commercial solar-panel efficiencies of about 20–22%. A cell at 33.89% therefore converts substantially more of the same sunlight than a typical panel in that comparison. The record device was a laboratory-scale cell smaller than a postage stamp, however. A record measured on a tiny cell does not establish what a square-meter module will deliver after wiring, encapsulation, heat, dirt, shading and other real-world losses.

Pre-drilled holes on the frame ensure effortless installation, making this panel solar portatil easy to set up on RVs, campsites, or rooftops.
How a tandem cell uses more sunlight
Two absorbers share the spectrum
A conventional silicon cell uses one absorber. A tandem design places a perovskite absorber on top of silicon so the two layers can divide the solar spectrum instead of asking one material to handle all of it.
Perovskite captures higher-energy light
Perovskite compositions can be tuned to absorb higher-energy blue light that silicon does not use as effectively. Light passing through the perovskite layer can still be absorbed by the silicon layer below. That complementary arrangement reduces energy losses that limit a single-junction silicon device.
Why the silicon benchmark matters
Bonilla cites about 29% as a practical efficiency limit for silicon in this discussion. The tandem approach is intended to move beyond that single-material ceiling; the article discusses roughly 34% as a prospective tandem-panel target, while the 33.89% result was achieved on a laboratory cell.

Record cell versus a rooftop product
| Measure | LONGi tandem record | Commercial silicon comparison | What a project team should infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported conversion efficiency | 33.89%, reported by the LONGi research team in a 2024 Nature paper | About 20–22%, as described by Sebastian Bonilla in 2024 | The record shows technical headroom, not a guaranteed percentage increase in a finished array |
| Silicon reference point | Designed to exceed the roughly 29% silicon limit discussed by Bonilla | Single-junction silicon technology | Tandems add a second absorber rather than replacing silicon’s role entirely |
| Tested area | Smaller than a postage stamp | Commercial modules are much larger | Area scaling, interconnection and module losses still need to be demonstrated |
| Long-term durability | Not established for a mass-market module in Bonilla’s 2024 article | Commercial products have established product specifications and warranties that vary by manufacturer | Request verified damp-heat, thermal-cycling and warranty data before substituting a tandem product |
| Installed cost per watt | Not stated in Bonilla’s 2024 article | Not stated in Bonilla’s 2024 article | Higher efficiency alone does not prove a lower installed cost |
| Commercial maturity | Laboratory record | Established market category | Procurement risk is currently much higher for a record-class tandem cell |
Can you buy a 33.89% panel?
Not on the evidence described in the article. Oxford PV had announced the first sale of its tandem panels, which demonstrates early commercial activity, but those panels were still well below 34% efficiency. The sale does not turn the LONGi laboratory record into a generally available residential module.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before specifying any tandem product, a builder, designer or homeowner should verify:
- the exact module efficiency, measured area and test standard;
- production certification and whether the quoted rating applies to a full module rather than a cell;
- product and performance warranties, including degradation assumptions;
- installed price per watt, lead time, installer authorization and local electrical approvals;
- the manufacturer’s evidence for moisture resistance, thermal cycling and field service; and
- the product’s material disclosures and end-of-life provisions.
Those checks matter because moving from a tiny research cell to square-meter modules while retaining efficiency, yield and reliability is a major manufacturing challenge.

Why higher efficiency matters on a constrained roof
Roof area is often the limiting resource. If two systems have similar operating conditions, a more efficient module can produce a given amount of power with fewer panels. That can help where roof geometry, dormers, setbacks, skylights or planning constraints leave little usable area. It can also reduce the number of mounting points, cable runs and optimizers, although the actual balance depends on the products and design.
Efficiency does not remove the effects of orientation, shading, temperature, inverter limits or seasonal sunlight. A lower-efficiency array on an unobstructed roof can outperform a higher-efficiency array installed in shade or on a poorly oriented plane.
What the published savings example shows
Bonilla gives a worked UK rooftop example in which the installation cost is assumed not to rise when modeled efficiency moves from 22% to 34%.

Scaling and reliability
Manufacturers must make large, uniform layers, interconnect them, seal them against moisture and heat, and maintain output over years of outdoor exposure. The laboratory result alone does not establish lifetime degradation or a commercial warranty.
Materials and supply
Perovskite tandems raise questions about lead and about carbon-, iodine-, bromine- and indium-containing materials. Any project evaluation should consider worker safety, supply-chain resilience, recycling and end-of-life handling alongside efficiency.

Balance-of-system costs
Panels are only one part of a solar installation. Racking, labor, inverters, protection equipment, wiring, access and roof work can dominate the installed price. A smaller panel count is valuable only if those savings outweigh the cost and availability of the tandem modules.
A practical decision framework for construction projects
- Define the constraint. Establish whether the project is limited by roof area, connection capacity, budget, planning rules or annual-energy targets.
- Set the baseline. Record the commercial module efficiency, warranted degradation, usable roof area, shading and expected annual yield for the design currently available.
- Compare complete systems. Evaluate tandem and silicon options using module efficiency, tested area, durability evidence, installed cost per watt, warranty and supplier maturity—not cell efficiency alone.
- Model site conditions. Recalculate output and cash flow with the actual roof orientation, shading, electricity tariff, export arrangement, battery strategy and incentives.
- Check deliverability. Confirm certification, installer capability, local approvals, lead time, replacement process and end-of-life responsibilities before the specification is locked.
The practical verdict
The LONGi result is an important demonstration of what perovskite–silicon tandems may achieve: more sunlight converted in the same footprint than today’s typical silicon panels. For construction, that prospect is most relevant on roofs where usable area is scarce. It should not yet be treated as proof that a purchasable residential panel will deliver the headline improvement, match the laboratory efficiency or lower the total cost of a project.
