Yes—exercise machines can generate electricity, but they do not literally convert sweat into power. They capture the mechanical energy of pedaling, pushing, pulling, or running, then convert it through a generator and inverter into electricity for the equipment, a battery, or a building circuit.
The output from one person is modest. For most gyms, the strongest case is not eliminating a large utility bill. It is combining a small energy offset with sustainability education, member engagement, and a visible environmental feature—especially when a facility is already replacing its cardio equipment.

How exercise equipment generates electricity
The process is straightforward:
Human movement → flywheel or belt → generator → regulated DC power → inverter → building circuit, battery, or device
On a stationary bike, for example, the pedals turn a flywheel. A generator connected to that rotating system produces direct-current electricity. Electronics regulate the output, and a micro-inverter can convert it to alternating current synchronized with the facility’s electrical system.

Connecting a generator also creates resistance. That resistance is part of the workout, much as conventional exercise equipment uses magnetic or friction resistance. The machine must balance energy recovery with a safe, comfortable, and adjustable exercise experience.
The phrase “turn sweat into electricity” is therefore shorthand for converting mechanical work into electricity—not harvesting energy from perspiration itself. SportsArt describes its ECO-POWR equipment as using a built-in generator and micro-inverter to return usable AC electricity to a facility’s circuit. SportsArt explains the conversion process here.
Which exercise machines can produce power?
Stationary bikes
Bikes are the clearest application because pedaling produces continuous rotary motion. The generator can be connected directly to the flywheel or drivetrain, making the system relatively simple to integrate.
Recommended Free Tools
Ellipticals and cross-trainers
Ellipticals already use resistance systems to control the workout. A generator can capture some of the energy that would otherwise be dissipated as heat, although output depends on the user’s pace, resistance level, and the machine’s design.
Steppers
Repeated downward strokes can drive a generator. Because the movement is intermittent and vertical rather than continuously rotational, the power profile differs from that of a bike.
Rowers
A rowing machine’s flywheel can drive a generator. Stroke rate, resistance, and the user’s technique all affect the amount of electricity produced.
Treadmills
Nonmotorized treadmills are a natural fit because the user drives the belt. Motorized treadmills are more complicated: the treadmill’s motor may consume substantial electricity, so the relevant question is whether the user-generated output offsets a meaningful share of that demand.
SportsArt’s current ECO-POWR range includes cycles, ellipticals, rowers, steppers, and treadmills. Outdoor equipment is another category. The Great Outdoor Gym Company’s PowerSmart range includes outdoor bikes, hand bikes, recumbent bikes, and cross-trainers that can charge devices or feed an energy-storage system.

How much electricity can a person produce?
Two units are important:
- Watts (W) measure the rate of producing power at a particular moment.
- Watt-hours (Wh) measure energy produced over time. One kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 1,000 Wh and is the unit commonly used on electricity bills.
The original IEEE Spectrum analysis estimated that an average person might produce approximately 50 to 150 watts during strenuous exercise. Its example of 100 watts sustained for five hours per day worked out to roughly 182.5 kWh per year.
The arithmetic is:
- 100 W for one hour = 100 Wh = 0.1 kWh.
- 150 W for one hour = 150 Wh = 0.15 kWh.
- 100 W for five hours per day for 365 days = 182.5 kWh per year.
- 160 Wh per workout, five workouts per week = 41.6 kWh per year.
- 160 Wh per workout, 20 users per day for 365 days = 1,168 kWh per year, before considering downtime and whether every session reaches that average.
These are illustrations, not promises about every machine or user. Results vary with workout duration, resistance, speed, fitness, machine type, generator efficiency, inverter losses, and utilization.
SportsArt currently cites approximately 160 Wh for an average workout, while another FAQ gives a possible range up to 250 Wh depending on intensity and resistance. A separate SportsArt page refers to up to 220 Wh during a one-hour workout and claims that up to 74% of the energy produced during exercise can be captured. These are manufacturer figures, and the differing numbers should be treated as model- and condition-dependent rather than as one universal specification. See the SportsArt FAQ and its product claims.

A single workout is suited to small loads rather than major building systems. Depending on the output and conversion losses, the electricity may support:
- Phone or USB charging;
- LED lighting;
- Displays, sensors, and small electronics;
- A small fan or television for a limited period;
- Battery charging for later use; or
- A small reduction in the gym’s overall grid demand.
SportsArt illustrates its claimed 160 Wh average workout as enough to power six LED bulbs, 16 smartphones, or four LED televisions. Those comparisons are vendor illustrations, not independent performance guarantees. The machines would not normally power an entire gym, air-conditioning system, pool heater, or other large commercial load.
Where does the power go?
Direct use
The simplest arrangement uses generated electricity immediately in the exercise machine or nearby electronics. This avoids the extra equipment and losses associated with storage.
Battery storage
A battery allows power produced during a workout to be used later. It also requires charge-control electronics, safety systems, thermal management, maintenance, and eventual battery replacement. Every additional conversion introduces some energy loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

In a grid-connected commercial installation, the micro-inverter converts DC output to AC power synchronized with the facility’s electrical system. That electricity offsets power the building would otherwise draw from the utility.

“Feeding power back into the grid” can be misleading. In many installations, the machine is offsetting demand on the gym’s internal electrical circuit, not exporting a significant amount to the public utility network or automatically earning net-metering credits. SportsArt says its units can plug into standard outlets and be daisy-chained, but the permitted number depends on the facility’s electrical configuration. A qualified electrician and the equipment supplier should review circuit capacity and applicable code requirements.
Is energy-generating gym equipment financially worthwhile?
Electricity-only payback is usually the weak part of the business case. Output per machine is small, while commercial cardio equipment, installation, maintenance, and power electronics can be expensive.
IEEE Spectrum’s 2011 analysis estimated that 100 watts produced for five hours per day would be worth about $18 per year at its assumed electricity rate of 10 cents per kWh. It also reported historical retrofit costs ranging from several hundred dollars to about $1,000 per machine and concluded that electricity-only payback could take decades. Those prices and assumptions are historical, not current market quotations.

Current commercial equipment can cost considerably more. A reseller listing viewed in August 2026 showed SportsArt ECO-POWR prices from approximately $4,495 for an indoor cycle to more than $13,000 for some treadmills, cross-trainers, and steppers. These are reseller prices, not universal manufacturer pricing, and may exclude delivery, installation, taxes, service contracts, or negotiated commercial terms. SportsArt’s official product page directs buyers to request a quote rather than publishing one standard price. See the reseller listings and official product page.

Why gyms buy the machines anyway
The commercial value is often broader than electricity savings. Energy-generating equipment can provide:
- A visible sustainability feature for members and visitors;
- Real-time feedback showing watts or cumulative energy;
- Leaderboards, competitions, and member engagement;
- Educational material for schools and universities;
- A sustainability story for hotels, corporate wellness centers, and public facilities;
- Data for dashboards or institutional reporting; and
- Differentiation in a competitive fitness market.
SportsArt promotes energy-production tracking, leaderboards, asset management, and user tracking through its SA WELL+ ecosystem. The original IEEE Spectrum article also described early green-gym projects as engagement and marketing tools whose electricity savings were relatively minor.
Environmental benefits and limits
During operation, the machines generate electricity without direct combustion. They can therefore create a small reduction in purchased grid electricity, while making energy use visible to the people exercising.

- How often the equipment is used;
- The local electricity mix;
- The equipment’s manufacturing and shipping footprint;
- Whether functioning machines are replaced early;
- The efficiency of the generator, inverter, and storage system; and
- What larger energy projects the facility could have funded instead.
For most buildings, HVAC optimization, LED lighting, insulation, efficient water heating, occupancy controls, energy monitoring, and solar photovoltaic systems can have a larger impact per dollar. Human-powered equipment is best described as energy recovery or a small on-site electricity offset—not as a route to energy independence.
SportsArt says that one ECO-POWR treadmill has had its lifecycle carbon footprint independently verified by the British Standards Institution and can offset or surpass that footprint through generated energy. That is a claim about a specific product and certification context, not an industry-wide result; buyers should request the relevant model-specific documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important technical caveats
Mechanical output is not necessarily usable output
A console may display the user’s mechanical power, while the electricity delivered after the generator, rectifier, inverter, wiring, and battery losses is lower. Ask whether a quoted figure refers to human output, generator output, inverter output, or net electricity delivered to the facility.
Peak power is not average energy
A short sprint can produce a high wattage reading, but economics depend on average watt-hours per session, daily utilization, uptime, and the number of machines in service.

Motorized treadmills may consume more than they generate
The presence of a generator does not mean the treadmill is a net energy producer. Compare user-generated output with the treadmill’s own motor and electronics consumption.
Storage adds cost and risk
Batteries add conversion losses, controls, thermal-management requirements, fire-safety considerations, maintenance, and replacement cycles. A direct connection to an active building load may be simpler.
More components mean more maintenance
Generators, belts, bearings, inverters, displays, cables, and networked software can all create additional service requirements compared with basic mechanical equipment. Confirm warranty coverage for the power electronics, not only the frame.
What exists today?
SportsArt ECO-POWR
SportsArt’s commercial indoor line covers cycles, ellipticals, rowers, steppers, and treadmills. It is most relevant to gyms, universities, hotels, corporate fitness centers, multifamily properties, and other facilities already planning to purchase or replace cardio equipment.
Because official pricing is quote-based, buyers should request a complete proposal covering equipment, delivery, installation, electrical work, software, training, maintenance, and warranty coverage.
The Great Outdoor Gym Company PowerSmart
TGO’s outdoor PowerSmart equipment is aimed at parks, councils, schools, resorts, and community spaces. The company says its machines can generate between 0 and 100 W per piece, charge phones and tablets, and feed an energy-storage unit. It also says output above 100 W is limited to manage overheating. These are vendor specifications rather than independent benchmarks, but they show the different purpose of outdoor systems: visible interaction and convenient low-power charging rather than substantial building-grid generation.
When does it make sense?
Good candidates include:
- High-traffic gyms with strong daily utilization;
- Universities and schools using the equipment for education;
- Hotels and corporate wellness centers seeking a visible sustainability feature;
- Public outdoor gyms where charging and engagement matter;
- Facilities with sustainability dashboards or member competitions; and
- Buildings already replacing cardio equipment.
It is a poor fit when:
- The equipment will be lightly used;
- The buyer wants the fastest possible energy savings;
- Working machines would be discarded solely for a small electricity benefit;
- The goal is to power major appliances or eliminate utility bills; or
- The purchase price premium is justified only by electricity payback.
A practical procurement checklist
- Measure utilization: Estimate realistic hours of use per machine, not theoretical opening hours.
- Compare like for like: Identify the incremental cost over equivalent conventional equipment.
- Request net-output data: Ask for measured watt-hours under realistic users and resistance settings.
- Check the electrical design: Confirm circuit capacity, outlet requirements, daisy-chaining limits, approvals, and local code compliance.
- Clarify the energy path: Determine whether power is used immediately, stored, or sent to the building circuit.
- Price the full lifecycle: Include installation, software, service, inverter repairs, batteries, downtime, and replacement parts.
- Review the warranty: Confirm coverage for generators, inverters, consoles, and network equipment.
- Value the non-energy benefits: Consider engagement, education, sustainability reporting, and branding separately from electricity savings.
- Compare alternatives: Price the same investment against LED upgrades, HVAC controls, solar, insulation, and building-energy monitoring.
- Avoid premature replacement: Include the environmental and financial cost of disposing of usable equipment.
The bottom line
Exercise machines that generate electricity are real, commercially available, and technically straightforward: human movement turns a generator, and power electronics make the output usable. But one person can produce only a modest amount of energy, and electricity-only payback is generally weak once equipment premiums, installation, maintenance, and downtime are included.
