The automations that earn their place are simpler: they respond to presence, warn about problems, or reduce repeated energy waste. Start with one routine that has a clear trigger, a short action list, a manual override and a sensible failure mode.
Use this test before building anything: does the routine solve a repeated problem, run reliably, prevent a common mistake, reduce energy without harming comfort, deliver information before it is too late, remain understandable to everyone in the home, and behave sensibly when a phone, sensor or internet connection is unavailable? A routine that passes at least two of those tests is a better candidate than a novelty effect.
First, separate scenes, schedules and automations
A scene is a saved group of device states, such as “Movie Night.” A schedule runs at a defined time. An automation uses a trigger and, usually, conditions to choose an action. A notification informs a person rather than changing a device. A script or sequence performs several actions in order.
That distinction prevents a common mistake: treating every feature as something that should run automatically. A scene you activate occasionally may be useful without needing a trigger, while a leak alert should notify you rather than launch a complicated chain of actions.

1. Presence and occupancy automations
Presence routines replace rigid schedules with context. They can turn on an entry light when someone arrives after dark, move a thermostat to a modest away setting when everyone leaves, or provide low-level light when somebody enters a hallway at night. Google Home supports arrival and away automations using phone location and eligible devices, including routines intended to save energy. See Google’s automation guidance.
Useful examples
- Turn on an entryway or porch light when someone arrives after sunset.
- Turn off selected lights after everyone leaves.
- Set the thermostat to an energy-saving temperature when the home is empty.
- Turn on a hallway or bathroom night-light when motion is detected after bedtime.
- Run a fan when a room is occupied and humidity is high.
- Pause a media or lighting scene when a room becomes vacant.
Motion is not the same as presence
A motion sensor detects movement and can decide that a person has left while they are reading or working quietly. An occupancy or presence sensor attempts to detect that someone remains in the room. Phone-based presence is useful for whole-home arrival and departure, but it is a poor substitute for room-level sensing. Geofencing can be delayed or distorted by phone permissions, battery settings and property boundaries.
A room-presence device such as the Aqara FP2 is designed for presence rather than simple motion. Check its platform compatibility and room coverage before buying; no sensor can compensate for a blocked field of view or an unsuitable layout.
A dependable lighting pattern
- Trigger: motion or room presence is detected.
- Conditions: it is between sunset and sunrise, ambient light is low, and the room is not intentionally in a different mode.
- Action: turn the light on at 20–40 percent brightness.
- Reset: turn it off after two to five minutes without motion.
- Override: retain the wall switch and app control.
For example: if hallway motion is detected between sunset and sunrise, turn the light on at 20 percent and turn it off after two minutes of inactivity.

Where presence routines go wrong
- A resident leaves a phone at home, or a guest has no location permission.
- A pet triggers a motion sensor.
- Someone sits still and the light turns off.
- Multiple residents make “away” status oscillate.
- Furniture blocks the sensor or the doorway is outside its detection area.
Use “everyone away” for whole-home actions, add a delay before away changes, and combine motion with time and light-level conditions. Do not unlock doors, disable security or shut down important equipment based only on a phone’s location. Keep a physical control path for lights and climate.
2. Safety, monitoring and maintenance automations
The value here is not a dramatic automatic response. It is shortening the time between an abnormal condition and your awareness of it. Good candidates include water leaks, freezing temperatures, open doors or garages, smoke-alarm sounds, rising refrigerator temperature, unusual humidity and an unexpected appliance power change.
Use notification-first design
- Detect the abnormal condition.
- Send a high-priority notification naming the sensor and room.
- Repeat only while the condition remains unresolved.
- Perform a low-risk protective action only when the hardware and policy have been tested.
- Require human confirmation for consequential actions.
Examples worth building
Leak detection
When a leak sensor detects moisture, send a notification naming the location and make a local announcement. If you have a compatible shutoff valve, closing it can be an optional protective action under a tested policy. Inspect the area, clear the sensor and reopen the valve manually after the cause is understood.
Freezing-temperature alert
If a sensor remains below your chosen temperature threshold for a sustained period, notify the homeowner. A consumer sensor is an additional warning, not a substitute for winterizing pipes or professional property monitoring. Automatically operating a heater requires equipment specifically suitable for the location.

Open-door or garage reminder
If a door remains open for 10–15 minutes, notify the homeowner and repeat every 10 minutes until it closes. Automatic closing should be used only with equipment designed for it and only after considering people, pets, vehicles and obstructions.
Smoke-alarm sound notification
The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium can listen for smoke-alarm sounds when used with its Smart Security service. Treat that as an extra alerting layer. It does not replace certified smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms or monitored protection.
Actions that need a very high threshold
- Unlocking a door or opening a garage.
- Disabling an alarm.
- Turning off a refrigerator, freezer, medical device or heating system in freezing weather.
- Operating a heater in an unsuitable environment.
- Automatically admitting a person to the home.
Google warns that its automations are for convenience and should not be treated as safety- or security-critical systems. Read the full qualification at Google’s official guidance.
Privacy is part of reliability
Leak and door sensors are simple, but occupancy routines may involve microphones, cameras, phone location and cloud event histories. Before enabling them, check whether processing is local or cloud-based, how long events are retained, who can view them, whether remote access requires a subscription and what remains available during an internet outage.

3. Energy and routine automations
Energy routines are most useful when they target large, repeated loads or forgotten tasks: heating and cooling, ventilation, lights left on, selected standby equipment, water heating where supported and time-of-use periods.
Practical examples
- Set a thermostat to a modest away temperature when everyone leaves and restore comfort before the expected return.
- Pause heating or cooling when a window remains open.
- Turn exterior or decorative lighting off at a defined time.
- Turn off selected office equipment after departure.
- Delay laundry or dishwashing until a cheaper utility period where your tariff supports it.
- Use vacation mode for the thermostat and selected lights.
The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium page describes occupancy-based Smart Home & Away, schedule assistance, time-of-use adjustments and “Pause when Open.” Some functions require additional sensors, subscriptions or a qualifying utility program. ecobee also advertises savings of up to 26 percent, but identifies that figure as an internal analysis of North American customers and says results vary by use and location. It is not a guaranteed household result; see the product page.
Why energy routines fail
- The temperature changes too far before occupants return.
- Phone-based away status is wrong.
- A window is open deliberately for ventilation.
- Time-of-use pricing is unavailable in the area.
- A smart plug is used with a load that should not be remotely switched.
- A routine overrides a manual comfort setting.
Use modest setbacks, minimum run times and delays. Let a manual change take precedence for the rest of the day, measure actual consumption where possible and start with one room or load.

- Name the problem: “The hallway is dark at night,” not “I need another gadget.”
- Choose the strongest trigger: prefer a direct local sensor over a cloud-derived assumption when the action matters.
- Add conditions: time, light level, occupancy, mode or a sustained threshold.
- Keep actions short: one or two obvious changes are easier to test.
- Add a timeout or reset: define what turns the action off or ends the alert.
- Test normal and failure cases: phone absent, internet offline, low battery, manual change, guest, pet and power restart.
- Make the override visible: retain a switch, button or app control and decide how long a manual change lasts.
- Document and audit: give the routine a clear name and delete it if correcting it becomes a regular chore.
Three compact logic templates
WHEN motion is detected
IF room is occupied
AND time is between sunset and sunrise
AND light level is low
THEN turn on light at 20–40%
AFTER 2–5 minutes of no motion
THEN turn off light
WHEN everyone leaves
IF no vacation mode is active
THEN set thermostat to a modest away temperature
WHEN someone returns
THEN restore the previous comfort setting
WHEN water sensor detects moisture
THEN send a high-priority notification with sensor name and room
AND announce the alert locally
IF a compatible shutoff valve is installed
THEN close it under the homeowner’s tested emergency policy
What not to automate
- Door unlocking or alarm disabling from uncertain geofencing.
- Critical appliances, medical equipment, refrigerators, freezers or unsuitable heaters on ordinary smart plugs.
- Long chains that depend on several cloud services.
- Whole-home shutdowns triggered by one person’s phone leaving.
- Any routine no household member can explain or override.
Motion, occupancy, temperature, leak and door sensors can misread conditions; batteries, accounts, firmware, routers and notification services can fail. A smart-home routine should assist a certified safety system, not replace it.
Do you need Matter, a hub or Home Assistant?
Use the platform already in the home first
For one or two lights, a thermostat or a notification, your existing Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or manufacturer platform is usually the lowest-maintenance choice.
What Matter improves—and what it does not
Matter allows compatible devices to be controlled by multiple certified platforms, and commands can operate over the local network rather than always through the internet. Google explains the standard at its Matter overview. Matter does not guarantee identical features in every app, eliminate the need for a controller, or remove manufacturer apps and firmware updates. Thread-based Matter devices need a Thread border router; Home Assistant documents the Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread options at its Matter integration page. Multi-admin sharing can also create duplicate devices or confusing ownership.
When local control is worth the extra work
Cloud-first platforms are easier to set up and usually simplify voice assistants and remote access, but outages, policy changes and subscriptions can affect them. Local-first systems can keep automations running without internet access, depending on the controller, router, protocol and device.
Home Assistant’s core software is free and open source. Optional Home Assistant Cloud provides easier remote access and voice integration; Nabu Casa lists U.S. pricing at $6.50 per month or $65 per year, excluding local sales tax, at its pricing page. Home Assistant Green is a plug-and-play Ethernet appliance listed at a $199 U.S. recommended MSRP before tax at the official product page. Zigbee or Thread devices may require additional radio or border-router hardware. Home Assistant can work alongside Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa, as described at its ecosystem FAQ.
Choose Home Assistant when you need mixed-vendor devices, complex conditions, local-first operation or detailed energy monitoring. Do not add a dedicated controller just to automate one lamp.
Quick Recap
A practical starting plan
- Build one hallway or entryway presence light.
- Add one leak, temperature or open-door alert in a location where early notice matters.
- Create one modest thermostat, lighting or standby-power routine.
- Live with those three for two weeks before adding anything else.
- Quarterly, merge duplicates, disable routines nobody understands and delete those that require frequent correction.
