The most secure Arlo setup is not simply a mounted camera with motion detection enabled. Reliable coverage depends on using the correct connection method, choosing locations where movement crosses the frame, configuring modes and recording rules, narrowing Activity Zones, filtering Smart Notifications, protecting your account, and testing the system in daylight and darkness.
This guide is for U.S. homeowners, renters, and families installing Arlo Essential, Pro, Ultra, wired, wire-free, floodlight, doorbell, or Go cameras. Because Arlo setup requirements vary by generation, confirm your exact model whenever the app presents different options.

1. Decide how your Arlo system should work
Before drilling holes or opening a subscription trial, write down what each camera must accomplish. A front-door camera, driveway camera, indoor camera, and remote-property camera have different power, coverage, and recording requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Situation | Arlo direction to consider |
|---|---|
| Simple indoor monitoring | Essential Indoor or another wired indoor model |
| Wire-free outdoor coverage | Essential, Pro, or Pro XL, depending on resolution, field of view, and battery needs |
| Wide driveway or yard | Pro, Ultra, or a floodlight model with a wide field of view |
| Remote property with weak Wi-Fi | Arlo Go 2, provided LTE service and adequate 4G coverage are available |
| Local recording priority | A compatible SmartHub or Base Station with supported storage |
| Continuous recording priority | Wired power and a camera-and-plan combination that explicitly supports 24/7 recording |
| Doorway and package monitoring | A video doorbell or camera aimed at the approach path, with privacy and Activity Zones configured |
Also check your router’s coverage and upload capacity. Several cameras streaming or uploading simultaneously can expose weak Wi-Fi or limited upstream bandwidth even when ordinary web browsing seems fast.

Direct Wi-Fi or SmartHub?
Arlo’s setup documentation identifies important generation differences:
- Arlo Ultra, Ultra 2, and Pro 3 cameras require an Arlo SmartHub or Base Station.
- Arlo Pro 4 and later models, and many Essential wire-free models, can generally connect directly to Wi-Fi.
- Arlo Go 2 uses LTE rather than relying on home Wi-Fi.
- Some newer devices use Bluetooth-assisted onboarding or Arlo SecureLink connections through newer hubs.
Do not assume that every Arlo camera works with every hub or Base Station. Check compatibility for the exact camera, hub, app generation, and region before buying or pairing hardware.
2. Prepare the app, account, network, and hardware
- Install the current Arlo Secure App and sign in or create an Arlo account.
- Charge wire-free cameras before setup.
- Have your Wi-Fi name and password available.
- Connect your phone to the intended home network.
- Enable Bluetooth if the model’s setup flow requires it.
- If using a SmartHub or Base Station, connect it to power and Ethernet as instructed.
- Keep the camera’s QR code, serial number, and packaging until setup is complete.
- Use a unique Arlo password and enable two-step verification where supported.
For initial pairing, Arlo commonly recommends placing the camera approximately 3–6 feet from the router or SmartHub/Base Station. That is a temporary pairing distance, not a recommendation for the final mounting position.
3. Set up the camera
SmartHub or Base Station setup
Use this path for models that require, or that you intentionally want to connect through, a hub:
- Open the Arlo Secure App and select the correct Location.
- Open Devices or choose Add New Device, depending on the app version.
- Tap the add-device icon, then choose Cameras.
- Select the camera family and exact model.
- Choose Connect with SmartHub, or the equivalent hub option.
- If necessary, choose Add New SmartHub and connect the hub to power and Ethernet.
- Charge or insert the camera battery and keep the camera close to the hub.
- If discovery fails, choose Manually Pair Device and press the camera’s Sync button as directed.
- Name the camera by location, such as Front Door, Driveway, or Back Gate.
- Complete the positioning prompts, then confirm live view and trigger a test recording.
Labels differ between older Library/Feed app instructions and the newer Arlo Secure 4.0 experience. Use the current model-specific instructions at Arlo’s Secure 4.0 setup guide when the screens do not match.

- Move it temporarily to the proposed mounting location and test the signal before drilling.
Some newer models support dual-band Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and may use a different flow. The exact manual for your camera controls if it conflicts with a general setup path.
4. Plan camera locations before mounting
The goal is not the widest possible image. It is useful footage that shows faces, approach paths, packages, vehicles, and exit routes.
Where to place cameras
- Front door: Cover the walkway, porch, door, and package drop area.
- Driveway: Cover the driveway apron and parked vehicles without pointing at the entire street.
- Side gate: Include the latch, gate opening, and path toward the house.
- Back yard: Prioritize doors, windows, gates, and likely access routes over empty lawn.
- Garage: Consider both the garage door and the interior entry point into the house.
Use overlapping coverage for important approaches. One camera should not be expected to cover an entire property without blind spots.
Angle and lighting
- Mount high enough to discourage tampering, but not so high that faces become indistinguishable.
- Aim entry cameras across the approach path rather than directly at a person’s forehead.
- Avoid the sunrise, sunset, headlights, reflective windows, and bright porch lights.
- Keep the lens clear of eaves, walls, branches, cobwebs, and rain runoff.
- Check live view from the actual mounting height before drilling.
Arlo says motion detection is generally more sensitive to movement crossing the field of view from side to side than to movement directly toward or away from the camera. Its troubleshooting guidance identifies approximately 5–20 feet as a useful range in the relevant setup context. See Arlo’s motion-detection guidance.
Field of view
Approximate fields of view listed by Arlo vary by family: Ultra models are about 180 degrees, Pro 3–6 models about 160 degrees, many Essential models and Go 2 about 130 degrees, and older Pro, Go, Baby, and Wire-Free models about 110 degrees. The exact value and adjustability depend on the model. On supported cameras, look under Devices → Device Settings → Video Settings → Field of View. See Arlo’s field-of-view documentation.

5. Configure modes, rules, and schedules
These controls are related but not interchangeable:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Mode: The system’s current operating state.
- Rule: What a particular camera does after a trigger.
- Schedule or automation: When a mode or behavior is active.
- Notification filter: Which events produce alerts; it may not determine what is recorded.
Practical baseline
| Mode | Suggested behavior |
|---|---|
| Home | Disable or privacy-enable indoor cameras; keep exterior cameras armed; monitor the front door for people and packages; monitor the driveway for people and vehicles. |
| Away | Arm exterior and interior cameras as appropriate; enable relevant object categories; send alerts to the homeowner and a backup recipient; configure the siren conservatively. |
| Night | Arm exterior cameras, test spotlight and night vision, and set an overnight notification policy that will not cause alert fatigue. |
| Standby | Use only when you intentionally want cameras inactive. Cameras generally need an armed mode such as Arm Home or Arm Away for default motion recording. |
Recording length, sensitivity, audio detection, siren behavior, and notification recipients should be set per camera. A correctly paired camera may still appear to “miss” events if the system is in Standby or its recording rule is disabled.
6. Reduce false alarms with Activity Zones
Activity Zones should be narrow and purposeful. They filter motion relevance; they do not hide part of the picture.
- Front door: Include the walkway, porch, and package area—not the entire street.
- Driveway: Include the driveway and vehicles while excluding passing traffic.
- Side gate: Include the latch and path.
- Back yard: Include areas near doors, windows, and gates rather than vegetation.
The current app path is generally Devices → Device Settings → Zones → Activity → Add. Depending on the model, Arlo says users may have three or five zones, with four or eight anchor points. Availability can depend on the camera, app, power state, and Arlo Secure plan. See Arlo’s Activity Zones guide.
Keep trees, flags, roads, moving shadows, and other constantly changing objects outside the zone. Rebuild zones after moving the camera. Auto Zoom & Tracking can also interfere with zone accuracy. Local Storage may save all videos even where Activity Zones would otherwise filter cloud recordings.

- Get more with an Arlo Secure plan (paid plan required): Share store video for up to 60 days, know more with personalized alerts for Person Vehicle Recognition, plus get alerts for Packages, Animals, and Fire Detection.¹
7. Configure Smart Notifications
Smart Notifications can filter alerts for people, vehicles, animals, and other motion. A notification filter is not the same as a recording rule: turning off vehicle alerts does not necessarily stop the camera from recording a vehicle event.
The current path is generally Location → Smart Notifications → select the active camera → People, Vehicles, Animals, or Other Motion. Interface labels may vary by app release. Start conservatively:
- Set moderate motion sensitivity.
- Walk through the scene at normal and fast speeds.
- Confirm a person is captured from approach through exit.
- Narrow the Activity Zone or lower sensitivity if alerts are excessive.
- Increase sensitivity incrementally only when relevant movement is missed.
- Test cars, pets, tree movement, headlights, rain, and insects.
Optimize for high-confidence alerts, not the maximum number of events. Constant low-value notifications encourage people to silence the system.
8. Add privacy protections and secure the account
Use Privacy Zones to conceal neighboring windows, private patios, bedrooms, bathrooms, or other areas that should not appear in live view or recordings. Depending on model and app support, Arlo allows up to three Privacy Zones per camera. The selected areas appear gray; the rest of the frame remains visible. Activity Zones are the control for motion filtering.

Changing the field of view, rotating the image, zooming, or enabling Auto Zoom & Tracking can remove or invalidate Privacy Zones. Recheck the mask after any framing change. See Arlo’s Privacy Zones instructions.

9. Understand subscriptions, cloud recording, and local storage
Yes, many Arlo cameras can provide basic live view and two-way audio without a subscription. That does not necessarily mean they remain a complete recording system after a trial ends.
| Capability | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Live view and two-way audio | Often remain available without a plan, depending on model and service status. |
| Cloud video history | May require an Arlo Secure plan after the included offer ends. |
| Person, vehicle, animal, and package detection | Advanced detection and filtered alerts may be plan-dependent. |
| Activity Zones | May require a plan, or continuous AC power on certain cameras. |
| Local recording | Requires compatible camera, hub/Base Station, storage device, and supported features. |
| 24/7 recording | Verify the exact camera, wired-power requirement, plan, and regional availability. |
Local storage is not automatically an off-site backup. Footage may be lost if the camera, hub, or storage device is stolen, damaged, or corrupted. Remote access, downloads, encryption, and storage limits depend on the particular hub and app generation.
Arlo says new camera and security-system products may include a 30-day Arlo Secure trial beginning when onboarding is completed in the app. The exact offer depends on product, retailer, promotion, and region, so verify the offer shown during activation. Compare the plan with a local-storage setup based on your tolerance for recurring fees, cloud dependence, and advanced detection.

10. Improve battery life and reliability
Wire-free cameras are convenient, but every recharge creates a possible coverage gap. Runtime varies with traffic, signal strength, resolution, clip length, spotlight use, temperature, and recording frequency.
- Improve the camera’s connection to the router or hub.
- Reframe away from roads, trees, flags, and other constant triggers.
- Use shorter clips or lower recording demands where appropriate.
- Reduce unnecessary sensitivity and audio detection.
- Use wired power or a supported solar solution for high-traffic locations.
- Expect cold weather and frequent spotlight use to affect battery performance.
Wired cameras generally provide better uptime and are a better fit for high-traffic areas or supported continuous recording, but they still depend on household power unless backed up.
11. Keep firmware and the system maintained
Arlo cameras generally update automatically when online and sufficiently charged. Current guidance says the camera should have at least 15% battery. Updates are commonly scheduled around 3:00–5:00 a.m. local time; live streaming may be unavailable during installation. The LED may alternate blue and amber while downloading and turn off for roughly one to two minutes during installation. Do not remove the battery, unplug the device, or interrupt power. See Arlo’s firmware guidance.
- Check battery levels regularly.
- Clean the lens and inspect mounts after storms.
- Test live view, a recording, playback, download, and notifications.
- Review users, modes, and schedules after household routine changes.
- Inspect local-storage media where applicable.
- Check Arlo system status during unexplained outages.
12. Run a complete security test
Daylight test
- Walk toward each camera.
- Walk across and away from its field of view.
- Test near, middle, and far distances.
- Test people, vehicles, and pets if those categories are enabled.
- Confirm the intended mode is active.
- Confirm the event records and the correct alert arrives.
Night test
- Test with porch lights on and off.
- Test headlights and the spotlight.
- Check for overexposed or overly dark faces.
- Look for reflections from walls, windows, and rain.
- Check whether insects or vegetation create alerts.
Failure test
- Temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi and note what happens to live view, alerts, and local recording.
- Trigger or confirm a low-battery warning.
- Download a test clip and verify its timestamp and audio.
- Ensure another trusted adult can respond to a serious alert.
13. Troubleshoot common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Camera is not discovered | Wrong setup flow, excessive distance, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi issue | Move it within 3–6 feet, confirm the exact model, retry manual pairing, and check the required network band. |
| Works near the router but not at the mount | Weak Wi-Fi or hub signal | Test at the final position, reposition the router or hub, or use a compatible hub or mesh strategy. |
| No recordings | Standby mode, disabled rule, expired plan, or failed storage | Check the active mode, Modes and Rules, plan status, and local storage. |
| Too many alerts | Street traffic, vegetation, broad zones, or high sensitivity | Reframe, narrow the zone, lower sensitivity, and filter notification categories. |
| Person walking toward camera is missed | Poor angle, distance, or sensitivity | Aim across the approach path, test roughly 5–20 feet away, and raise sensitivity gradually. |
| Activity Zone behaves incorrectly | Camera moved, zone too broad, or tracking enabled | Rebuild the zone and disable Auto Zoom & Tracking if necessary. |
| Privacy mask disappeared | Field of view, zoom, rotation, or tracking changed | Recreate Privacy Zones and verify the live view. |
| Battery drains quickly | High traffic, poor signal, long clips, spotlight, resolution, or cold | Improve connectivity, reduce recording demands, and consider wired or supported solar power. |
| Firmware update fails | Weak connection, low battery, or service issue | Charge above 15%, improve connectivity, check service status, and follow Arlo’s update troubleshooting steps. |
| Live view fails during an update | Expected temporary behavior | Wait for installation to finish and do not interrupt power. |
For missing recordings, also check placement, battery, mode, sensitivity, Activity Zones, schedules, and device restart steps in Arlo’s troubleshooting guidance.

- Use a hub when the camera family requires it or when compatible local storage is important.
- Place exterior cameras at entry points and aim across approach paths.
- Keep roads, moving vegetation, and neighboring private areas out of detection and privacy-sensitive framing.
- Arm exterior cameras in Home mode and use more comprehensive coverage in Away mode.
- Start with moderate sensitivity and narrow Activity Zones.
- Enable only the Smart Notification categories that matter for each camera.
- Use wired power for high-traffic or continuous-recording locations where supported.
- Enable two-step verification, remove old shared users, and maintain router, app, hub, and camera firmware.
- Perform daylight, night, and failure tests before considering the installation finished.
An Arlo system can deter activity and preserve useful evidence, but it cannot guarantee prevention, uninterrupted internet, continuous recording, correct AI classification, or recovery of footage from stolen equipment. The strongest installation is the one that produces dependable, high-confidence alerts without sacrificing privacy or creating battery and notification gaps.
