There is no single best Sony soundbar preset. The right settings depend on your exact model, television, room, speaker placement, and source material. For most systems, begin with HDMI eARC, set the TV to pass through multichannel audio, run Sony’s room optimization after placing every speaker, and then make small adjustments to dialogue, bass, and rear-channel levels.
Settings differ between the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 5/6/7/8/9, Theatre Quad, Theatre Trio, HT-A3000/A5000/A7000, HT-S2000, and entry-level models. Identify your model on the soundbar, remote, packaging, or Sony Support before following a menu path.

Use the correct HDMI connection
Use HDMI eARC whenever both the TV and soundbar support it. A typical connection is:
Streaming box / game console / Blu-ray player
↓
TV HDMI input
↓
TV HDMI eARC port → Sony soundbar HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC)
If the TV cannot pass a particular video or audio format correctly, connect the source directly to a compatible HDMI input on the soundbar, then connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI eARC or ARC port.
eARC versus ARC
eARC has substantially greater audio bandwidth than ordinary ARC. Sony identifies eARC as the connection for formats such as Dolby Atmos based on Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, and multichannel LPCM that ordinary ARC cannot reliably carry. See Sony’s HDMI and eARC guide.
Use these as starting points:
- Soundbar eARC: On or Auto.
- TV eARC: Auto or On, if available.
- TV digital audio output: Pass-through, Bitstream, Auto, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- TV speakers: Audio system or external speakers.
- HDMI-CEC: On. Sony may call this Control for HDMI; other brands use names such as Anynet+, Simplink, or Bravia Sync.
TV labels are not interchangeable on every brand. “Auto,” “Bitstream,” “Pass-through,” “Dolby Digital Plus,” and “PCM” can behave differently depending on the television and app. Avoid forcing stereo PCM if you want the soundbar to receive Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, or another multichannel signal.
Optical is useful when HDMI is unavailable, but it has more format limitations and generally cannot carry the full range of eARC audio formats. One eARC device cannot compensate for an ARC-only TV or another ARC-limited link in the chain.
Check enhanced HDMI settings
On compatible Sony models, HDMI inputs may offer Enhanced format (4K120, 8K), Enhanced format, or Standard format. Select the enhanced option only when the TV, cable, source, and soundbar support the required video format. Sony documents these choices in its HT-A7000 HDMI settings.
If enabling an enhanced mode causes a blank picture, missing sound, lost HDR, Dolby Vision failure, or loss of 4K/120 Hz from a console, test the TV’s HDMI input setting, cable, and source output mode. If necessary, step down from Enhanced 4K120/8K to Enhanced, or from Enhanced to Standard.

Prepare the room before changing sound settings
Calibration cannot fully correct poor placement. Before optimizing:
- Center the soundbar beneath the TV.
- Keep the front of the bar unobstructed and avoid pushing it deep inside a cabinet.
- Place the subwoofer on the floor with clearance from walls and corners. A corner can increase bass, but may also make it boomy.
- Put rear speakers to the sides of, or slightly behind, the main seating position.
- Keep up-firing speaker panels clear of shelves, cabinets, and other objects.
- Remove temporary boxes, blankets, or furniture that could change the calibration.
Ceiling height, ceiling reflectivity, side walls, seating position, and room openness all affect reflected surround and height effects. A soundbar may produce less convincing Atmos in a room with very high ceilings, an open side, or obstructed speaker panels.
Run Sony Sound Field Optimization
Run the optimization only after the soundbar, subwoofer, and rear speakers are in their final positions. Sony’s process measures the room and speaker arrangement, then adjusts the system. On the HT-A7000, the process can account for the bar, ceiling, side walls, optional subwoofer, and rear speakers. See Sony’s Sound Field Optimization guide.

Understand sound format versus sound processing
Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, DTS:X, and LPCM describe the incoming audio signal. Sound Field, Immersive Audio Enhancement, Vertical Surround Engine, Dolby Speaker Virtualizer, and DTS Neural:X are processing modes that alter or expand playback.
Turning on surround processing does not turn a stereo stream into discrete native Atmos. First verify what the source is sending; only then evaluate the processing mode.
On the HT-A7000, Sony lists Sound Mode On, Dolby Speaker Virtualizer, and DTS Neural:X. Sony notes that DTS Neural:X may be unavailable with certain high-sample-rate, Dolby, or DSD sources. Details are in the HT-A7000 sound-effect guide.

Recommended settings for movies and Dolby Atmos
Start with:
- Sound Field or Immersive Audio Enhancement: On.
- Night mode: Off.
- Audio DRC: Off or Auto, unless you need reduced dynamics.
- TV output: Pass-through, Bitstream, or Auto.
- eARC: On or Auto on compatible equipment.
For native Atmos, confirm that the title, streaming plan, app, source device, TV, cable, and soundbar all support Atmos. Look for the format in the soundbar display or app. Some Atmos mixes use rear and height channels subtly; every speaker does not need to play constantly.

Compare Sony’s processing with a familiar movie scene. Keep the setting that gives you clear dialogue, convincing envelopment, and the least artificial reverberation—not necessarily the one that sounds loudest.
Improve dialogue without ruining the mix
Dialogue problems have three different causes: speech may need to be louder, more intelligible, or less affected by the difference between quiet voices and loud effects.
Voice mode
Use Voice mode at the lowest effective level when voices are masked by music or effects, the room is reflective, you sit off-axis, or the bar is mounted unusually high or low. Excessive enhancement can make voices thin or processed and can disturb the balance of effects. The feature may have a different name or be unavailable on some models.
Acoustic Center Sync
A compatible Sony TV can sometimes act as part of the soundbar’s center channel, making dialogue appear to come from the screen. Sony’s HT-A7000 documentation requires the supplied HDMI cable and TV center-speaker cable for this function, and availability depends on the TV and settings. See Sony’s TV center-speaker information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCenter synchronization can be counterproductive if the TV and bar are physically misaligned. Some sound-effect settings may also prevent TV center-speaker output. Use it only with compatible Sony hardware and confirm that voices remain anchored naturally.
Audio DRC and Advanced Auto Volume
Use Audio DRC when speech is too quiet relative to effects and you must listen at a low level. Use Advanced Auto Volume when channels or advertisements vary dramatically in loudness. Both can make films and music less natural by reducing intended dynamics. They are practical controls, not fidelity improvements.

Adjust bass, subwoofer, rear, and height levels
Use this order:
- Run Sound Field Optimization.
- Set the main volume to a comfortable reference level.
- Adjust the subwoofer in small increments.
- Test speech, music, and action content.
- Adjust rear levels only after confirming that the source contains surround information.
- Recheck after moving the subwoofer or changing your listening position.
Maximum bass is rarely the best choice. Too much subwoofer output can make dialogue boomy, create one-note bass, rattle furniture, and mask detail. A listener seated in a bass null may hear weak bass even when the subwoofer is working correctly; moving the subwoofer can help more than raising its level.
Similarly, quiet rears do not automatically indicate a fault. Stereo content, restrained mixes, disabled sound fields, Night mode, poor placement, pairing problems, and wireless interference can all reduce rear output.
Use a test tone to separate a speaker problem from a content problem:
BRAVIA Connect
→ My Devices
→ Settings
→ Sound Settings
→ Sound Output Check
→ Test Tone
For many older models:
HOME
→ Setup
→ Advanced Settings
→ Speaker Settings
→ Manual Speaker Settings
→ Test Tone → On
Make one change at a time and use familiar reference scenes. Do not judge rear performance from ordinary stereo cable television alone.
When manual speaker settings help
Automatic optimization should be your starting point, not your only tool. Manual controls can help with:
- speaker distance;
- channel and subwoofer level;
- rear-speaker level;
- test tones;
- TV or center-speaker position;
- wireless playback quality.
Try manual adjustment when the sofa is off-center, the room has an open side, the bar is inside a cabinet, one rear speaker is farther away, the calibration position was unusual, or dialogue seems too high or low. The HT-A7000 guide documents manual speaker, wireless-linking, playback-quality, and TV-center-position controls.
Night mode and volume normalization
| Control | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Night mode | Late-night viewing, apartments, sleeping children | Less bass impact and weaker dynamic contrast |
| Audio DRC | Reducing the gap between speech and loud effects | Less cinematic range |
| Advanced Auto Volume | Uneven channel or advertisement volume | Music and film dynamics may sound unnatural |
Leave Night mode off for normal movie listening. Sony specifically recommends checking that Night mode is off when rear speakers or the subwoofer seem unusually quiet. Turn it on when avoiding disturbance matters more than impact.

Starting points for music, sports, gaming, and ordinary TV
- Music: Begin with a neutral or stereo mode. Use upmixing only if you prefer room-filling coverage over a faithful stereo presentation.
- Sports and news: Use neutral processing or a low Voice setting. Reduce it if crowd noise becomes harsh.
- Gaming: Use Game mode if your model provides it, then verify the complete 4K/120 Hz, HDR, and audio path. If video features disappear, test the TV input, cable, source, and HDMI format setting.
- Ordinary TV: Sound Field can make stereo programming more spacious; Voice mode can help when speech is masked. Neither proves that the broadcast is Atmos.
- Late-night TV: Enable Night mode and lower the subwoofer if necessary, accepting reduced impact.
Fix common Sony soundbar problems
No sound or sound from the TV and bar simultaneously
- Confirm the HDMI cable is connected to the TV’s eARC/ARC port and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC) port.
- Set the TV audio output to Audio system or external speakers.
- Enable HDMI-CEC/Control for HDMI.
- Set the TV digital output to Pass-through, Bitstream, or Auto.
- Restart the TV, source, and soundbar to renew the HDMI handshake.
Simultaneous TV and soundbar output may be intentional when using a compatible Sony TV’s center-speaker mode.
Dolby Atmos is missing
- Confirm the title and subscription plan include Atmos.
- Confirm the app and source device are configured for Atmos or bitstream output.
- Enable eARC where required.
- Check the TV port, cable, and pass-through setting.
- Confirm the soundbar identifies the incoming format.
Immersive processing cannot substitute for missing Atmos metadata or multichannel source audio.
Rear speakers are too quiet
Enable Sound Field, turn Night mode off, verify pairing, play a test tone, check rear level settings, and inspect placement. If the test tone works but ordinary TV does not use the speakers, the program may simply be stereo or mixed with restrained surround content.

Audio and video are out of sync
- Determine whether the delay affects every source or only one app or device.
- Set TV eARC to Auto.
- Check the soundbar’s A/V Sync setting.
- Test the source through the TV and directly through the soundbar, if possible.
- Disable unnecessary TV audio processing.
- Update the TV, source, and soundbar.
Sony identifies eARC mode and A/V Sync as relevant controls, although their paths vary by model. See its audio/video synchronization guidance. Do not immediately add a large delay: a setting that fixes one app can make another source worse.
Wireless subwoofer or rear speakers cut out
- Confirm each speaker is powered on and check its wireless status.
- Restart the soundbar and wireless speakers.
- Move them away from Wi-Fi routers, mesh nodes, cordless-phone bases, and other radio equipment.
- If available, test RF Channel by changing it from Auto/On to Off.
- Change Wireless Playback Quality from Sound Quality to Connection when stability matters more than maximum quality.
- Perform manual linking if automatic pairing fails.
- Update firmware.
Sony notes that RF Channel availability varies by region and model, and wireless options may appear only when optional speakers are connected.
Should you add a subwoofer or rear speakers?
Do not buy accessories to fix a connection, pairing, placement, or calibration problem. Upgrade based on the deficiency you can identify:
