The lock’s physical strength still depends on the deadbolt or latch, strike plate, screws, door frame, door construction, installation, and the exact ANSI/BHMA certification. Connected smart locks add remote access, temporary codes, notifications, and home-automation integrations, but also introduce batteries, accounts, networks, apps, and cloud-service dependencies.
The best choice is the one that matches your door, access needs, emergency-entry plan, privacy expectations, and threat model.

What is a keypad door lock?
A keypad lock opens when the user enters a numeric code on physical buttons or a touchscreen. Depending on the design, it may replace the entire deadbolt, operate as a lever lock, or retrofit onto the inside of an existing deadbolt.
These terms are related but not interchangeable:
- Mechanical keypad lock: Uses buttons and mechanical components rather than batteries or a network.
- Standalone electronic keypad: Uses batteries and electronic codes but normally operates locally without internet access.
- Smart lock: Adds Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter, an app, or home-automation integration. Not every smart lock includes every feature.
- Keyless lock: A broader category that may use a keypad, fingerprint reader, smartphone, NFC, Apple Home Key, RFID credential, or another access method.
- Retrofit smart lock: Mounts on the interior of an existing deadbolt. Some designs preserve the exterior cylinder and existing keys, as with the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock.
“Keyless” also does not necessarily mean “no physical key.” Many products retain a mechanical key cylinder as a backup; others rely on external battery contacts or another emergency-power method.

- Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
- One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
- Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
- Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
- Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder.
| Type | Internet required for local entry? | Remote control | Typical advantage |
|---|---|---|---|

| Retrofit smart lock | Model-dependent | Model-dependent | Preserves some existing hardware and keys |
How keyless entry can improve security
The main security benefit is better access control, not an invulnerable door. A keypad can let you:
- Create a separate code for each household member.
- Issue temporary or scheduled access to cleaners, contractors, guests, tenants, or employees.
- Delete one person’s access without replacing every lock.
- Reduce the consequences of a lost, copied, or unreturned key.
- Configure automatic locking after a delay, if the model supports it.
- Receive low-battery warnings, activity notifications, or lock-status alerts on supported connected products.
- Check or control the lock remotely on compatible Wi-Fi or hub-connected models.
For example, Schlage’s current smart-lock range includes models and configurations with keypad entry, unique codes, auto-lock, alerts, app control, and integrations such as Apple Home Key, Alexa, Google Home, Z-Wave, or Matter. Those features vary by model; they are not universal keypad-lock capabilities. See the current Schlage smart-lock comparison.
Every benefit has a qualification. A code that is never revoked can function like a permanent key. A code can be observed, guessed, or shared. Remote unlocking makes a compromised account more consequential. Auto-lock can create a lockout or a problem if the door is not fully closed. Activity logs help only when the owner reviews them and understands what the device records.

| Feature | Standalone keypad | Connected smart lock |
|---|---|---|
| Numeric entry | Usually included | Usually included, but verify the model |
| Internet required for keypad use | Usually no | Usually no for local keypad entry |
| Remote unlocking | No | Usually available through Wi-Fi or a hub |
| Temporary codes | Often limited | Usually more flexible |
| Activity history | Limited or absent | More likely |
| Digital dependency | Low | Higher: account, app, network, and possibly cloud |
| Failure modes | Primarily batteries, codes, and mechanics | All of those plus connectivity and software |
| Best fit | Simple local access | Remote management and integrations |
Wi-Fi is not automatically more secure or less secure. It trades simpler local operation and potentially lower power use for easier remote access and more digital dependencies. NIST identifies connected door locks as consumer IoT devices whose security, maintenance, power consumption, usability, and long-term support must be considered together. See NIST’s consumer IoT overview and its lifecycle and support discussion.
Are keypad locks physically more secure than keyed locks?
Not necessarily. A keypad can reduce risks associated with lost or copied keys, but the keypad itself does not reinforce the door. A forced-entry attack may target the strike plate, screws, frame, door skin, hinges, latch, or deadbolt rather than the credential system.

Before replacing a lock, inspect the complete door assembly:
- Use a substantial deadbolt or latch designed for the application.
- Ensure the strike plate is securely installed with appropriate screws into sound framing.
- Check that the door, jamb, hinges, and frame are solid and properly aligned.
- Confirm that the cylinder, if retained, has the security characteristics claimed for the exact model.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation requirements rather than relying on the keypad as the primary security upgrade.
A keypad does not automatically prevent picking, bumping, code guessing, hacking, or forced entry. Manufacturer claims such as “bump-proof” or “pick-resistant” must be limited to the named product and its documented design; a historical Schlage keyless-lock brochure should not be generalized to every current keypad lock.

Understanding ANSI/BHMA ratings
Certification language is useful only when you identify the exact standard, rating, and model. Two grading systems are commonly confused.
Traditional Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3
Manufacturer materials commonly describe Grade 1 as the highest commercial-level category, Grade 2 as a higher residential category, and Grade 3 as basic residential quality. Yale states that its residential keypad locks are engineered to meet ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 standards; that statement applies to the products and scope identified by Yale, not to every electronic lock. See Yale’s compatibility and FAQ material.
Residential Security, Durability, and Finish ratings
BHMA’s residential framework separately evaluates:

- 0.3S Fingerprint Fast Access:With this fingerprint keyless entry door lock, unlock your door in 0.3 seconds with fast, secure biometric access. Store multiple fingerprints for family and trusted visitors.
- Security
- Durability
- Finish
Each category receives an A, B, or C. AAA represents the highest combination, but a product can perform differently in each category. A high finish rating does not mean the lock has the highest physical-security rating. BHMA rating guidance and Schlage’s explanation of functions and grades provide useful context.
Some current Schlage materials list particular models with both ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Commercial Grade 1 and ANSI/BHMA A156.40 Residential Grade AAA, along with model-specific fire-door listings. Do not transfer those certifications to every Schlage product or keypad lock. Check the certification for the exact model and installation configuration using the manufacturer’s product documentation.
Access methods and their trade-offs
- PIN code: Fast and shareable, but vulnerable to observation, guessable patterns, and careless sharing.
- One-time or scheduled code: Better for guests and contractors because access can expire automatically, if supported.
- Smartphone app: Convenient, but depends on phone battery, Bluetooth, app permissions, account security, and sometimes the internet.
- Fingerprint: Convenient for users who do not want to remember a code, but enrollment, privacy, and wet or dirty fingers can affect usability.
- NFC or Apple Home Key: Quick tap-based entry on compatible devices, but ecosystem and device compatibility must be verified.
- Voice assistant: Useful for status or locking in some systems; unlocking should require strong authentication and careful risk assessment.
- Physical key: A familiar fallback, but it can be lost, copied, or retained by a former user.
- External emergency power: Helpful when batteries are depleted, but the lock must support the specific battery or power-bank method.
What to check before buying
Door and hardware compatibility
Verify the door thickness, backset, bore-hole dimensions, handing, interior clearance, deadbolt or latch type, trim, and exterior weather exposure. Also check whether the product is intended for a single-cylinder or double-cylinder configuration, whether it fits the existing keyway, and whether a fire-rated door or required egress arrangement limits your choices.
Measure before ordering. A warped, sagging, or difficult-to-close door can cause an electronic deadbolt to jam or drain batteries quickly. Yale’s compatibility and troubleshooting guidance specifically highlights door alignment as a common issue.
Property restrictions
Renters, condo owners, and residents of multifamily properties may need landlord, association, or building approval before replacing exterior hardware. A reversible retrofit may be preferable where full replacement is prohibited, but compatibility with the existing deadbolt remains essential.

- Easy to Use: The lock can be installed in less than 15 minutes with just a screwdriver, and the 4-8 digit code is simple and easy to program.
- Code Entry: The keypad lock provides 20 codes for family members, or you can set a one-time code for guests, and you can also unlock the door with a key (Duplicable).
- Auto Locking: You can set the auto-lock time from 5 to 99 seconds, and you can also disable the auto-lock to keep the lock unlocked.
- Satisfactory Service: With a 30-day money-back guarantee,1-year product coverage, and lifetime after-sales support,if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us, and we'll respond promptly.
Certification and environment
Match the lock’s exact certification to the door’s use and traffic level. Finish ratings concern environmental resilience, not the complete security of the door assembly. Fire-door listings are model-specific; for example, Schlage documentation identifies a 20-minute listing for certain products, not for the entire product family.
Battery, outage, and emergency-entry planning
Before relying on any electronic lock, answer these questions:
- What battery type does it require, and can you obtain replacements locally?
- How does the keypad behave when the interior batteries are depleted?
- Does it have a mechanical key override or external emergency-power contacts?
- What exact battery, power bank, or 9-volt procedure does the manufacturer specify?
- Will the keypad still work during an internet outage?
- What functions disappear if the app, hub, Wi-Fi, or cloud service is unavailable?
Install fresh, manufacturer-specified batteries, enable low-battery warnings when available, and keep a compatible emergency-power source if the product supports one. Keep a backup key in a genuinely accessible location—not taped beside the door—and test the fallback method before an emergency. Replace batteries proactively in high-traffic or very hot, cold, or damp locations. There is no universal battery-life figure: chemistry, temperature, traffic, radio protocol, firmware, alignment, and motor load all matter. NIST-related guidance notes that battery-powered locks must conserve energy and that logging and communications can affect consumption; see NIST’s battery and IoT criteria material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safe installation and setup workflow
Use the exact manual for the model and firmware. A model-neutral workflow is:
- Confirm the door measurements and product compatibility.
- Test the existing deadbolt with the door closed. It should move without force.
- Install the exterior keypad, mounting plate, and interior motor assembly as directed.
- Confirm tailpiece or actuator alignment.
- Install the specified batteries.
- Complete handing, calibration, or automatic door-detection setup.
- Create the master or programming code, then a separate test-user code.
- Test locking and unlocking repeatedly with the door open.
- Test again with the door closed and verify that the bolt enters the strike smoothly.
- Configure auto-lock only after alignment is confirmed.
- Pair Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Matter, Z-Wave, or other integrations only if needed.
- Update the firmware and companion app through the manufacturer’s process.
- Test low-battery behavior and emergency entry.
- Record the model, battery type, reset procedure, and support contact.
If setup fails, check the batteries, recalibrate with the door open, inspect tailpiece orientation, and test the deadbolt manually for binding. Reset only after recording codes and integrations. Re-pair the app or hub if necessary. Do not force the bolt or drill the lock before contacting the manufacturer.

Manage codes like keys
- Use a unique code for each person or role when the lock supports multiple users.
- Avoid birthdays, addresses, repeating digits, and codes visible from outside.
- Never write a code on the lock, door frame, or nearby note.
- Use scheduled codes for temporary access where available.
- Delete guest, contractor, tenant, and employee codes as soon as access ends.
- Change shared codes after a household or tenancy turnover.
- Protect the owner account with a unique password and multifactor authentication where offered.
- Limit administrator privileges and review activity logs for unusual access.
- Treat a lost phone as a lost key: revoke sessions, change the account password, and remove integrations as appropriate.
Privacy and smart-lock cybersecurity
A keypad-only lock may have little or no cloud dependency. A connected smart lock can involve the lock, phone, companion app, account, home network, cloud service, and third-party platforms. Activity logs may reveal when people arrive and leave, while remote unlocking increases the impact of a compromised account.
Before purchase, review the manufacturer’s privacy policy, account-recovery process, multifactor-authentication support, firmware-update process, data retention practices, and statements about end-of-support. Mechanical hardware may remain functional after the software, cloud infrastructure, or integrations that make it “smart” are discontinued. A lock that continues local keypad operation after a cloud shutdown is fundamentally different from one whose useful features depend on the vendor’s servers.
Which type is right for you?
- Want no internet? Choose a mechanical or standalone electronic keypad.
- Need remote access? Consider built-in Wi-Fi or a hub-connected model, and accept the additional account and network dependencies.
- Want to retain existing keys? Consider a compatible retrofit design such as August’s, after checking the existing deadbolt.
- Want maximum simplicity? Avoid integrations and features your household will not maintain.
- Manage frequent guests or rental turnover? Prioritize individual codes, schedules, easy deletion, activity history, low-battery alerts, and a tested emergency-entry plan.
- Most concerned about forced entry? Start with the door, frame, strike, screws, deadbolt, and exact certification—not the number of smart features.
Products and price signals to investigate
Brand families are not interchangeable: features, certifications, connectivity, backup methods, and prices vary by exact model.
Schlage smart locks
Schlage’s Arrive, Encode, Encode Plus, Sense Pro, Connect, and Encode Lever families are relevant to homeowners seeking full replacement locks with keypad access and ecosystem integrations. Official comparison materials viewed around August 16–18, 2026 showed approximate MSRP signals of $199 for Arrive, $299 for Encode, $329 for Encode Plus, $399 for Sense Pro, $309 for Encode Lever, and $241 for Connect. These are manufacturer-listed signals, not guaranteed checkout prices, and do not imply equal certification or features across the range. See Schlage’s official buying page.
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock
August’s retrofit design is aimed at homeowners and renters who want to preserve the exterior deadbolt and existing keys. The official page showed a $199.99 product price signal around the research date; August support materials showed price signals of $59.99 for a Smart Keypad and $79.99 for a Connect Wi-Fi Bridge. Bundles, availability, and requirements can change. Verify compatibility before purchase through the official product page and support catalog.
Yale keypad and smart locks
Yale is worth considering when keypad entry, code management, compatibility guidance, and residential certification are priorities. Yale’s support material states a Grade 2 standard for its residential keypad-lock scope, but not every Yale model has the same connectivity, keyway, backup method, or certification. Confirm the exact model in Yale’s official support material. A model-level price was not established here.
Kwikset electronic and smart locks
Kwikset offers SmartCode, Home Connect, Obsidian, and other electronic-lock lines, including models using protocols such as Z-Wave and Zigbee. Check the exact radio, hub requirement, keyway, and certification rather than choosing by family name. Kwikset’s official literature page listed June and July 2026 price books, but a model-level retail price should be verified before publication or purchase: Kwikset literature and price books.
