Give it filtered light, a moist but well-drained growing medium, and suitable humidity; avoid following a rigid watering calendar. Care advice can vary by begonia group, so guidance for other types should not automatically be applied to this plant.
How to identify a spotted begonia
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes Begonia maculata as having olive-green leaves heavily spotted with silver and pink flowers in summer. North Carolina State University Extension classifies it among cane-type begonias and lists “Polka Dot Begonia” as a common name. The distinctive foliage is the feature behind its other familiar name, spotted begonia.
Begonia care is type-dependent. The RHS organizes its houseplant advice by groups including fibrous-rooted, rex or rhizomatous, and semi-tuberous begonias; that guidance is not a complete, species-specific schedule for B. maculata. Use recommendations for a particular group only when they apply to that group.
Where to place it for good light
Choose a spot with filtered light or partial shade rather than harsh, direct sun. NC State Extension says cane begonias perform best in partial shade. The RHS advises protecting fibrous-rooted begonias from direct sunlight because it can scorch leaves. Singapore’s National Parks Board also lists semi-shade as the light preference for B. maculata.

How to water and choose a growing medium
NC State Extension says cane begonias prefer moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. In practice, check the growing medium and the plant’s conditions instead of watering to a fixed weekly schedule. Aim to keep the medium moist without leaving it waterlogged.
The RHS recommends peat-free multipurpose compost or peat-free John Innes No. 2 for fibrous-rooted begonias. This is group-level guidance, not a species-specific prescription for every spotted begonia.

Why are my begonia leaves dropping?
Leaf drop or rotten leaves do not point to one cause on their own. In its general houseplant guidance, the RHS identifies over-watering, excessive humidity, and low light as possible contributors to leaf problems and leaf drop. Check the plant’s light, moisture, and growing conditions before changing its care; a symptom alone cannot confirm the cause.

Cane and fibrous-rooted begonia guidance supports humid conditions, but a particular humidity level is not established for B. maculata in these sources. The RHS suggests a tray of gravel or expanded clay granules as one option: add water but keep its surface below the top of the material. Treat this as an optional way to raise humidity, not a required accessory or a guarantee of a specific humidity.

When to feed
For established fibrous-rooted begonias, the RHS advises feeding from May to September with a high-potassium plant food, following the product label. This seasonal recommendation is for that begonia group; the RHS does not present it as a complete feeding schedule specifically for B. maculata.
How to propagate a spotted begonia
For cane-type begonias, NC State Extension identifies stem cuttings as the easiest propagation method. Its guidance does not establish a rooting time or a detailed cutting recipe, so avoid relying on a guaranteed timetable.
