Stations of the future are not simply upgraded platforms. They are transport infrastructure, part of a passenger’s end-to-end journey, and pieces of the city around them. The strongest vision is not one universal design, but stations that make transfers easier, work for more people, support safer and more sustainable travel, and connect thoughtfully with their surroundings.
What makes a station future-ready?
UITP’s Stations of the Future project, developed with KONE, examines how stations can respond to changing passenger needs. Its themes include accessibility and inclusion, safety, sustainability, multimodal connections, and urban planning. A station therefore needs to be considered at more than one scale: the movement of people through the building, the transfer between transport modes, and the relationship between the station and the city.

The project material offers trends, perspectives, and collected solutions rather than a single blueprint. The right approach depends on the station’s role, its users, its location, and the surrounding transport network. A busy interchange, a neighbourhood stop, and a heritage station will not necessarily need the same interventions.
How can stations work as mobility hubs?
A mobility hub brings different types of transport together so people can make convenient connections. England’s Sustainable placemaking guidance for mobility hubs describes hubs as usually combining public transport with shared and active travel, including walking and cycling. UITP’s work also considers ancillary services and social activity as part of the wider hub concept.

- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
That framing is useful for planning, but it does not mean every station should offer the same services. A hub’s design should reflect local demand and the practical needs of transfers. The central question is whether the station makes it easier to continue a journey, rather than merely placing transport options near one another.
Design the whole journey, inside and outside
Make movement legible and accessible
Inside the station, passengers need routes they can understand and use. Inclusive design means considering the journey through the station, not just whether a single entrance or platform is accessible. Routes, changes of level, and the way people move through busy areas all shape whether a transfer works for different passengers.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Vertical circulation is one part of that picture: elevators and escalators can connect levels, but their presence alone does not establish that a complete journey is accessible. UITP identifies accessibility and inclusion as central concerns in its Stations of the Future publication.

A station’s edges matter as much as its interior. Safe and convenient links to walking, cycling, public transport, and other last-mile options help passengers reach destinations beyond the station boundary. The European Commission’s summary of the UITP report highlights seamless last-mile connectivity, inclusive design, and preserving the station’s relationship with the city and its heritage.

It's a must-have for stocking stuffers for men and women, tools gifts for dad, tech gadgets for men, gifts for dad, gifts for him, gifts for husband, gifts for boyfriend, cool gadgets for men, and cool gifts for dad.
This is also a placemaking challenge. The UITP trends report and solutions report address stations as places connected to wider civic life. Services or social uses may be appropriate in some locations, but they should complement the station’s transport function and fit local conditions.
Why stations are part of wider transport policy
The European Commission’s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy places stations within a broader shift toward smart, sustainable, and multimodal transport. It sets a policy target to double high-speed rail traffic across Europe by 2030 and a goal of a fully operational, multimodal Trans-European Transport Network by 2050. These are targets, not evidence that station projects have already achieved those outcomes.

The revised TEN-T Regulation entered into force in July 2024. The Commission says it designates 431 cities as urban nodes and requires urban mobility planning and regular submission of mobility indicator data. The figure counts designated cities, not stations, and is not a measure of station quality. It does, however, show how city-level mobility planning is connected to the wider transport network. The Commission’s urban mobility planning and monitoring guidance provides further context.

How to assess a station proposal
There is no common quantitative scorecard or comparable outcome dataset across the cited material. For a practical review, assess the proposal across these connected questions:
Best Value
- Milwaukee Ink all Fine Point Marker, Black, 4 Per Pack
- 4 per pack Features Clog Resistant Marker Tip Writes through Dusty, Wet and Oily Surfaces Durable Marker Tip for Writing on Concrete, OSB and Rough Surfaces
- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete
- Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
- Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking
- Transfers and last-mile connections: Can passengers change modes and reach nearby destinations through clear, workable connections?
- Accessibility and inclusion: Does the design consider the full journey for passengers with differing needs?
- Safety: Does the proposal address safe movement within the station and at its connections to the surrounding area?
- Sustainability and resilience: How does the station support broader sustainable transport goals and respond to changing conditions?
- Fit with the city and heritage: Does it connect appropriately with its setting, including valued historic relationships?
- Adaptability: Can the station respond to changing travel patterns and uses over time?
These axes synthesize the themes in UITP’s project and the European policy material. They help structure a proposal review; they are not a validated scoring system or proof of quantified benefits.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
The cited sources describe design perspectives, policy goals, and mobility-hub guidance, but do not establish comparable project costs or quantified station-level outcomes for passenger experience, ridership, emissions, safety, or accessibility. A specific intervention should not be presented as having a measured benefit on this basis alone. The European Commission’s overview, “Designing stations of the future: UITP report explores”, summarizes the report’s recommendations; Arup’s Future of Stations offers a separate design perspective. The mobility-hub guidance cited here is specific to England, so its recommendations should not be treated as universal rules for every jurisdiction.
For decisions about a particular station, project-level evaluation is needed to understand costs, performance, and effects on passengers and the surrounding area. The material available here supports a set of planning priorities, not a claim that one design package will work everywhere.
