Let the pot drain and empty the saucer or decorative cover; never leave the roots sitting in runoff. Check the soil rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.
How to water a poinsettia
- Check the soil. Feel the surface of the potting mix. If it is still moist, wait and check again; water when the surface feels dry. Iowa State University Extension recommends checking daily, but that does not mean watering every day. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach
- Make room for runoff. If the nursery pot is inside decorative foil or an outer pot, remove it before watering so excess water can escape. Water over a sink or another place where runoff is easy to manage. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach
- Water the soil thoroughly. Apply water until it flows freely through the drainage holes rather than giving the plant frequent small sips. University of Minnesota Extension
- Let the pot drain. Allow the water to finish draining, then empty the saucer and any cover that has collected runoff. Put the pot back in its cover only when the water has been discarded and drainage is unobstructed. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension
How often should you water a poinsettia?
There is no reliable universal interval such as once a week. How quickly the pot dries depends on indoor conditions; the United States Botanic Garden notes that poinsettias may need water more often in high light and low humidity. Use soil dryness as your cue rather than the calendar. United States Botanic Garden
Prevent standing water and overly dry soil
Poinsettia soil should be moist, not persistently saturated. Excess water can injure roots and contribute to root rot, while a plant allowed to dry too far may wilt and drop leaves prematurely. A decorative foil sleeve or cachepot can conceal runoff, so check it after watering and discard any collected water. University of Minnesota Extension University of Delaware Cooperative Extension
What watering-related symptoms can tell you
- Yellowing lower leaves or leaf loss while the soil stays wet: Excess moisture or trapped runoff may be contributing. Check that the drainage holes are clear and empty the saucer or cover. Iowa State notes that plants kept too wet often develop yellowing and lose lower leaves; overwatering can also contribute to root rot. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Iowa State University Extension and Outreach
- Wilting or leaf loss with dry soil: The plant may have dried too far. Water thoroughly, then let the pot drain rather than leaving it in runoff. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension
- Wilting while the soil is wet: Do not assume the plant needs more water. Persistently saturated soil can damage roots and may cause root rot. University of Minnesota Extension
These signs are clues, not a definitive diagnosis: leaf loss alone does not prove that overwatering is the cause.
