No credible evidence here supports a definitive list of the seven most reliable push mower brands ever built. Consumer Reports’ current walk-behind reliability guide draws on owner reports about nearly 43,000 mowers, but its accessible results do not show the full brand ranking. The strongest advice is to compare reliability data by mower type and model—not treat brand reputation or a trust ranking as proof that a mower will last.
What “reliable” means in the available data
Reliability is about the likelihood of problems during ownership. It is not the same as how much shoppers trust a brand, how satisfied owners are, or how well a mower performs in a laboratory test.
Consumer Reports says its walk-behind brand reliability coverage uses member reports on nearly 43,000 mowers. The guide was updated May 14, 2026. That is a substantial owner-survey sample, but it is not a controlled test of how long every mower lasts, nor does the accessible result provide a complete ranked list. Consumer Reports research program leader Martin Lachter describes member surveys as a complement to lab tests because they capture owners’ experiences over several years of use. The survey evidence is therefore useful for comparing reported reliability within its coverage, but it cannot substantiate an “ever built” verdict. The available information does not establish the full set of leading brands, their order, or a lifetime ranking across decades of mower designs.
#1 Best Overall
- 4-blade reel mower with a cutting width of 14” and durable 8.5” polymer wheels for maximum maneuverability. Lightweight at only 19 pounds. Reel Lawn Mowers are great for small lawns..Deluxe hand-reel mower ideal for most turf grasses.
- This push lawn mower has an adjustable blade height of 0.5”-1.75”. Capable of cutting grass up to 4 inches tall and is less effective on taller grass.
- Manual grass cutter is environment-friendly alternative to other lawn mowers. This push mower is pollution-free, noise-free, low maintenance, lightweight and easy to use.
- A reel mower uses a cutting action that does not bruise or damage the blades of grass. For best results using a reel push mower, mow no more than 1/3 of the grass blade, so that the roots stay intact.
- Increase the amount of overlap while using your push mower if your lawn reaches a height of 4 inches or more. It’s better to mow smaller amounts more frequently than it is to let the grass get long. Try not reel mower when the grass is wet.
Reliability, trust, and overall ratings are different measures
Consumer Reports reliability coverage
Consumer Reports’ overall mower ratings combine laboratory test performance with predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. A high overall score is not automatically the highest reliability score. Its buying guide reports survey data on more than 62,000 lawn mowers and tractors purchased from 2015 to 2025, a broader set than the walk-behind guide’s nearly 43,000-mower coverage. Lifestory Research’s trust ranking
Lifestory Research’s 2026 study ranks brands by trust, not mechanical reliability. It collected 12,042 opinions from U.S. consumers who said they had actively shopped for lawn mowers in the previous 12 months. Its top seven were John Deere, Honda, Toro, Craftsman, Husqvarna, Troy-Bilt, and Cub Cadet. The study used non-probability online panels; it did not determine the ranking through mower failure records, third-party reviews, an editorial committee, or industry professionals. Rank #2
- Easy Start Engine: The144cc 4-stroke OHV engine delivers a reliable balance of high performance and ease. Equipped with auto choke for easy start, and primer structure for better starting.
- Side Discharge: Efficiently discharges grass clippings to keep you mowing through tall, thick grass with ease.
- 18-inch Steel Deck: The durable steel deck is built for long-lasting use, and the specialized blade delivers a clean, even cut for a well-groomed lawn.
- 5-Position Height Adjustment: Quickly adjust the cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for a clean cut on different grass types and conditions.
- Easy Maneuverability: 8" rear and 7" front wheels provide smooth handling for easy maneuvering around trees, flower beds, and tight corners.
Those seven names can answer which brands ranked highest for trust in that study, but they should not be presented as the seven most reliable push mower brands.
What the evidence says about specific brands
Brands included in Consumer Reports coverage
The accessible Consumer Reports result names EGO, Greenworks, Honda, and Toro as examples of brands represented in walk-behind reliability coverage. It does not expose the complete ranking, so their inclusion is not evidence that any of them placed among the top seven.

DeWalt and Toro gas push mowers
Quartz, reporting on the 2026 Consumer Reports survey, identifies DeWalt as the highest predicted-reliability gas mower brand and reports an 88/100 predicted reliability score for Toro gas push mowers. These are secondary-source claims about gas mowers; the Toro score should not be generalized to all Toro models or to battery mowers. The complete underlying ranking was not available in the accessible source material. Quartz’s report on Consumer Reports mower reliability
A model listing is not a reliability verdict
Consumer Reports’ battery walk-behind ratings listing includes the EGO LM2114, a 21-inch push mower on a 56V battery platform. That confirms product details, not a reliability win for the model or its brand. Check current availability and the exact model specification before buying. How to choose a push mower without an unsupported brand ranking
Use reliability as one input, then narrow the choice to the exact mower type and model that fits your lawn. A brand-level result can conceal differences between gas and battery products, and between individual models.

- Match the category. Compare gas push mowers with gas push mowers, and battery models with battery models. Do not transfer a gas reliability result to a battery lineup.
- Check each measure separately. Look at predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and lab performance as distinct measures rather than treating an overall rating as a reliability score.
- Fit the mower to the property. Consider lawn size, terrain, storage, and whether you prefer gas maintenance or a battery-powered setup.
- For battery models, account for the platform. Confirm the exact battery and charger included or required, and whether the platform suits your other equipment needs.
- Verify model-specific support. Review the current warranty for the exact model and region, locate service options, and confirm that replacement blades, batteries, or chargers are compatible before purchasing.
