Start with what you want to address in your water—not a “best filter” list. Here, “home water makers” means household drinking-water treatment devices, such as pitchers, faucet filters and reverse-osmosis (RO) systems, rather than water dispensers. The right choice depends on the concern, the exact system’s verified reduction claim, and whether its installation and upkeep suit your home.
How to choose a home water treatment system
- Identify the concern. Is the issue taste, a named contaminant, or another water-quality concern? A filter designed for one purpose should not be assumed to improve every aspect of water.
- Check the exact model’s claim. Look up the model in the certifier’s listing and confirm which contaminant reduction is covered. A standard number alone is not a blanket promise. NSF gives NSF/ANSI 53 as an example for a lead-reduction claim and NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis: NSF’s overview of water filters and treatment.
- Match the system to the household. Consider installation, available counter or cabinet space, how much treated water you need, and the filter’s replacement schedule.
- Compare ownership needs. Check which replacement cartridges fit, how often the manufacturer says to replace them, and their ongoing cost. For RO, also check the reject-water ratio and any manufacturer-specified operating needs.
Independent certification tied to a specific reduction claim is stronger evidence than broad marketing language. Certification does not mean a system addresses every possible concern.
Seven approaches to consider
This is a menu of treatment routes, not a ranking of seven verified products. The cited guidance supports these categories but does not establish particular current models, prices, warranties, or availability. Verify any model against its certification listing and manufacturer documentation before buying.
| Approach | Where it treats water | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher filter | In a portable pitcher | Whether the exact model’s listed claim covers your concern; cartridge availability and replacement schedule. |
| Faucet-mounted filter | At the tap | Fit with your faucet, the precise reduction claim, and cartridge replacement needs. |
| Countertop carbon filtration unit | On the counter, typically at the point of use | Counter space, connection or installation requirements, and model-specific evidence for the contaminant you want to reduce. |
| Gravity-fed countertop filter | In a countertop reservoir | Available space, capacity for household use, and whether the exact model has a relevant verified claim. |
| Countertop RO system | On the counter at the point of use | Setup, water reject ratio, operating needs, and certification for the exact model. |
| Under-sink RO system | Under the sink, supplying a point-of-use outlet | Cabinet space, plumbing and installation needs, reject-water efficiency, and replacement costs. |
| System selected after water testing | Depends on the identified concern and chosen treatment | Use the test result to identify the treatment goal, then verify that the selected system’s exact claim addresses it. |
NSF describes pitchers, faucet filters and RO systems as point-of-use options. CDC also describes household treatment categories including filtration, distillation, ultraviolet (UV) treatment and softening. These categories are not interchangeable, and not every one is suited to every drinking-water concern. See CDC’s overview of home water treatment systems.

What to know about RO reject water
RO systems generate reject water; they do not treat every gallon entering the system into drinking water. The EPA’s 2025 guide says WaterSense-labeled point-of-use RO models generate 2.3 gallons of water waste or less per gallon of treated water produced. That is an efficiency threshold for those labeled models—not a claim that RO produces no reject water or that every RO system meets the threshold. Compare the exact model’s information. EPA’s guide to point-of-use RO systems.
Understand what a filter does not promise
Most household drinking-water filters should not be treated as germ-removal devices. CDC states: “Most home water filters—like pitcher or fridge filters—are not designed to remove germs from your water.” If germs are the concern, choose a treatment approach specifically suited to that concern rather than assuming a standard pitcher or refrigerator filter will address it. See CDC’s guidance on choosing home water filters.

- COMPREHENSIVE FILTRATION SYSTEM: The ULTIMATE PROTECTION system was specifically designed to significantly reduce Chlorine, Heavy Metals (Lead, Arsenic, Chromium +More), and stop scale build-up in whole home water supply.
- DELUXE WATER FILTER: With the Express Water Deluxe Series you get a heavy duty stainless steel bracket and free-stand frame. The system includes pressure release buttons for each filter and pressure gauges for system monitoring and ease of filter change.
- ANTI-SCALE PROTECTION: Avoid costly repairs, ensure that pipes & appliances in your home are protected from scale and dirt/silt build-up. Laboratory packed polyphosphate works to effectively take out scale before entering home.
- HEAVY METAL PROTECTION: Defend your home at every faucet from harmful heavy metals such as Lead, Arsenic, Mercury, Chromium, Cadmium and more. Heavy metals are increasingly found in water supplies due to seepage and run-off.
PFAS claims need particular care. EPA’s page says that, as of April 2024, then-current filter certification standards did not themselves indicate PFAS reduction down to EPA’s newer drinking-water standard levels. A certification or standard reference should therefore not be read as proof that a particular filter reduces PFAS to those levels. Check current EPA guidance and the exact model’s substantiated claims before making a choice. EPA’s PFAS drinking-water treatment information.

If you do not know what is driving a water concern, testing can help define the treatment goal. The result is useful only when it is matched to a system whose specific, verified claim covers the identified issue. Avoid choosing a filter simply because it lists a familiar technology or uses a general promise such as “cleaner water.”
