For a working organ, the essential systems are pipes, a steady wind supply, a windchest that distributes air, and keys linked to valves that direct air to selected pipes. Choose the scale first: each step up adds more demanding requirements for accurate pipe construction, reliable air delivery, and a mechanism that works consistently.
How a pipe organ works
Each pipe produces a pitch when air enters it. Pressing a key opens a valve, allowing air from the windchest to reach the corresponding pipe. The wind supply may be a fan or blower, or a bellows; a reservoir helps smooth fluctuations as valves open and close.
The windchest is the central air-distribution structure, not simply an enclosure. Organbuilder Blair Batty calls it “the heart of the instrument”: it supports the pipes and contains the mechanism that switches them on and off. In one amateur design, keys operate valve blocks over the chest, while flexible plastic tubing carries air to pipes placed elsewhere.
Choose the scale before the materials
These projects illustrate different levels of ambition, not interchangeable ways to get the same sound. The sources do not provide controlled comparisons of tone or reliable total project costs, so choose according to your intended use and the complexity you can build and maintain.

| DIY PVC project | A project narrative describes PVC plumbing-pipe pipes, a squirrel-cage fan, a weighted-lid reservoir, and a windchest with flap valves and airtight gaskets. | A proposed amateur build; its author’s sound sample from four pipes is not a controlled comparison of pipe materials. |
| Wooden single-rank instrument | CAS Creations’ 2021 video description reports a 42-note wooden organ, range C3–F6, with one rank of Bourdon 4-foot pipes. It mentions walnut and maple key tops, plastic irrigation tubing, and a foot-pumped bellows. | A documented build example, not a universal specification. |
| Portable organ plan | Jim Ludden’s page provides chaptered instructions and full-size drawings. It describes a revision extending the keyboard to C for four full octaves, or 49 notes. | A plan-led project for builders prepared to follow a detailed design. |
Start with a tabletop demonstration
If your goal is to understand the basic relationship between airflow and sound, a small activity is the most contained starting point. DIY.org describes using a shoebox or plastic container, cardboard tubes, straws, tape, craft foam, and a balloon or small blower/pump. Treat these as activity materials, not a complete kit or a shortcut to a full organ.
- Use a box or container as the air chamber, with tubes arranged as simple pipes and straws serving as mouthpieces.
- Introduce air gently with the balloon or small blower/pump, then listen for how airflow affects the sound.
- Keep fan intakes unobstructed. Use eye protection when trimming tubes, and have an adult supervise cutting and hot-glue work.
- Do not over-pressurize a sealed container. The activity’s precautions apply to this small demonstration; larger projects need tool and electrical safety appropriate to their equipment.
For a playable instrument, plan the wind system and mechanism together
Before cutting pipes, decide how air will reach them and how each key will open its valve. The windchest, valves, seals, tubing, and pipe locations form one system: a leak or poorly operating valve can undermine otherwise well-made pipes.

Provide reasonably stable wind
The American Institute of Organbuilders’ 2020 guidelines say, “Wind pressures should be reasonably stable when the keys are initially depressed and as they remain depressed.” They describe reservoirs for regulating airflow and weights or springs for maintaining working pressure. They also advise keeping flexible wind lines short and routing conductors directly.
Do not assume a stronger blower is better. In his own experiment, Matthias Wandel found a vacuum-cleaner motor too noisy and producing more pressure than needed; he observed that high pressure could make pipes sound at something other than their fundamental. That is one builder’s experience, not a universal measurement. His account also emphasizes smoothing the contact surfaces between valves and the windchest to reduce leaks.

Match the key action to pipe placement
Keys must actuate valves that open the intended air path. If the pipes cannot sit directly over their valves, tubing can connect the two, as in the amateur design using plastic tubing. Keep flexible runs short and direct where possible, consistent with the organbuilders’ guidelines.
Support long or delicate pipes
The American Institute of Organbuilders’ 2020 guidelines call for pipes to be firmly supported. They recommend upright racks for pipes longer than 1.2 to 1.5 meters (4 to 5 feet), and also for delicate construction. This is professional guidance; smaller builds still need supports appropriate to their pipe size and materials.

Choose pipe material for the project you are actually building
Cardboard tubes suit the tabletop activity, PVC appears in one DIY project narrative, and wood was used in the documented 42-note build. Those examples do not establish that the materials have equivalent tonal results, durability, or fabrication demands. Likewise, the wooden build’s dimensions and single Bourdon rank describe that particular project rather than a standard beginners’ design.
Use plans with attention to their terms
For a more ambitious portable instrument, Jim Ludden’s page offers chaptered instructions and full-size drawings. The page states that personal-use builds for the builder’s own use or as a gift are allowed under its stated conditions. Read the page and linked documents for the complete design and terms before building; the 49-note revision is a feature of that design, not a requirement for every homemade organ.
Quick Recap
What to settle before you begin
- Purpose: Decide whether you want a sound demonstration, a compact playable instrument, or a portable organ.
- Air supply: Choose a blower or bellows and plan a reservoir and sealed connections suited to the design.
- Action: Work out how keys, valves, windchest, tubing, and pipes will connect.
- Materials: Select pipe material for the chosen design rather than assuming one material can substitute for another.
- Documentation: Follow a plan at its stated scale and observe its use terms.
- Safety: Account for cutting, adhesives, moving fan intakes, and electrical equipment as applicable.
