The Essential Tools Every First-Time Homeowner Should Buy First

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a compact hand-tool kit, not a contractor’s inventory. For most first-time homeowners, the first purchases should be screwdrivers (or a multi-bit driver), a claw hammer, tape measure, small level, retractable utility knife with spare blades, hex keys, pliers, a flashlight, and task-appropriate safety gear. Add a cordless drill/driver if you expect to assemble furniture or handle small projects. Buy specialized equipment only when a real job in your home calls for it.

What belongs in your first homeowner toolkit

A first toolkit should solve ordinary problems: tightening a loose handle, hanging a picture, opening a delivery, measuring a space, assembling furniture, or working safely when a closet or basement light is unavailable. The following tools cover those jobs without making you pay for equipment you may never use.

Screwdrivers or a multi-bit driver

Buy Phillips and flathead screwdrivers in several useful sizes, or choose a multi-bit screwdriver if storage space is limited. Different screw heads and sizes are common throughout a home, so one large driver is not a substitute for a small range. A multi-bit model is convenient, but keep its bits organized and replace damaged bits rather than forcing them into a screw head.

Claw hammer

A claw hammer handles picture hooks, small nails, light assembly work, and pulling nails back out. Its claw is useful when a fastener has been driven in the wrong place. You do not need a framing hammer for routine homeowner jobs; a manageable hammer is easier to control and store.

Tape measure and a small level

Use a tape measure before buying furniture, shelving, blinds, or appliances, and when deciding where a mounting point can go. A compact torpedo level is easy to keep in a drawer and is sufficient for checking a picture, shelf, or small bracket. Measuring first prevents avoidable returns and crooked installations.

Retractable utility knife and replacement blades

A retractable utility knife is useful for opening boxes, trimming packaging, and cutting many household materials. Keep replacement blades with it so a dull edge does not encourage excessive force. Retract or lock the blade whenever it is not cutting, use the knife’s built-in safety features, and cut away from your body on a stable surface.

Hex-key set

Hex keys, also called Allen keys, fit the hex fasteners used in flat-pack furniture, door hardware, exercise equipment, and other household products. A set covering several sizes is more useful than a single key supplied with one item. Store the keys together; a missing size can stop an otherwise simple assembly.

Pliers and a compact tool container

Tongue-and-groove pliers provide adjustable gripping range for holding, turning, or loosening many household parts. They are useful when a hand needs to hold a fitting while another tool turns a fastener. Keep the basic tools in a tool bag, box, or other compact container so you can carry them to the job instead of making repeated trips.

Flashlight

A flashlight is practical in dim service areas, under sinks, in attics, and during a power outage. Keep it somewhere you can reach without electricity, and check its batteries periodically. A working light also lets you inspect a leak or electrical panel without balancing a phone in one hand.

Eye protection and other safety gear

Wear protection appropriate to the task. Consumer Reports recommends eye protection and other safety equipment, while This Old House identifies ANSI Z87 safety glasses for power-tool work or flying debris. Add hearing, respiratory, hand, or other protection when the material, dust, noise, or tool requires it. Safety gear is part of the tool purchase, not an optional accessory.

The first power tool to consider

Why a cordless drill/driver is usually the next step

A cordless drill/driver combines two frequent tasks: drilling holes and driving screws. It can speed up furniture assembly, curtain-rod installation, shelving, hardware replacement, and small repairs. This Old House recommends beginning with a drill/driver and considering rechargeable interchangeable batteries. Contractor Tom Silva told This Old House, “I don’t even use a corded model anymore. Unless I’ve got a pile of drywall to hang or a whole subfloor to screw off, it’s faster to grab a cordless and go.” That observation describes convenience for ordinary projects, not a requirement that every homeowner buy one immediately.

How to choose one without overbuying

  • Match the tool to your work. If your near-term plans involve only occasional tightening, the hand tools can come first. A drill/driver becomes more valuable when you have several holes or many screws to install.
  • Check weight and handling. A tool that feels tiring or awkward is less likely to be used safely, especially overhead or in a tight cabinet.
  • Confirm the battery and charger. Make sure the purchase includes what you need to operate it, or account for the separate battery and charger in the total cost.
  • Think about a future battery platform. Interchangeable batteries can serve later tools, but only if you stay within the same platform. Choose based on the kinds of tools you realistically expect to add.
  • Buy the right bits. A drill/driver without suitable drill and driver bits cannot perform the jobs that motivated the purchase. Keep bits matched to the fastener head and material.

No particular brand or model has been established as a universal best choice, and a cordless drill/driver is not a substitute for safety glasses or correct wall anchors.

Buy now or add later?

Use the table as a priority guide. “Buy first” means the item solves common, low-complexity tasks across many homes; “add when needed” means the tool is worthwhile when a specific home feature or project makes it necessary.

Buy first Add when a real need appears
Screwdriver set or multi-bit screwdriver Stud finder
Claw hammer Wet/dry vacuum
Tape measure Stepstool
Small level Socket set
Retractable utility knife and spare blades Receptacle tester
Hex-key set Caulk gun
Tongue-and-groove pliers Pry bars
Compact tool bag or box Impact driver
Flashlight Saws
ANSI Z87 safety glasses and other task-appropriate protection Nail set, stubby wrench, silicone lubricant, and other maintenance-specific tools
Cordless drill/driver when your projects justify it Additional specialized tools selected for a defined project

This Old House’s first-time-homebuyer checklist includes a much larger maintenance collection, including a nail set, pry bars, silicone lubricant, stubby wrench and socket set, receptacle tester, drill/driver, and bits. That is a useful reference for a home with broader maintenance demands, but it should not be treated as the minimum purchase for every household.

Fasteners and bits: buy for the wall and job

A small assortment of screws, nails, and wall anchors is convenient, especially after moving. Do not assume one fastener works everywhere. The wall material, load, and mounting method determine whether you need a nail, screw, masonry anchor, hollow-wall anchor, or another option. Read the hardware instructions and select a fastener rated for the object you are mounting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same principle applies to drill and driver bits. Use a bit intended for the material—such as wood, metal, or masonry—and a driver bit that fully fits the screw head. A poorly matched bit can strip the fastener, damage the work surface, or slip unexpectedly.

Home information to identify before a tool emergency

Tools are only part of being prepared. Before a leak, outage, or gas concern occurs, locate the systems that let you make the situation safer.

  1. Find and label the main water shutoff. Confirm which valve stops water to the home and make sure it can be reached without moving stored items.
  2. Identify the main electrical service breaker. Know which panel controls the home and how the breakers are labeled. Do not remove covers or work inside the panel unless you are qualified to do so.
  3. Locate the gas meter. If you smell gas, leave the area rather than searching for a tool or operating a switch inside.
  4. Collect records and manuals. Keep important home records, appliance information, and system manuals in a known location so a repair person—or you—can find the relevant details quickly.

A flashlight belongs near this information because an outage can make the panel, shutoff, or records difficult to see.

How to decide between a starter kit and individual tools

When a kit makes sense

A kit can provide coordinated storage and a broad selection in one purchase. Consumer Reports says starter kits from reputable brands can be a good option for sourcing high-quality tools on a budget. A kit is most useful when its contents match the work you expect to do and include the sizes you will actually use.

When individual purchases are better

Buying a few tools separately avoids paying for duplicate drivers, obscure bits, or low-use accessories. It also lets you choose a comfortable hammer, a clearly marked tape measure, a safe retractable knife, and pliers that fit your hand. If you already own some tools, inventory them before buying a kit.

  • Plastic non-slip handles provide enhanced comfort and control
  • Blow-molded case provides secure tool storage and convenient portability
  • Measures 16.89 by 12.68 by 3.35 inches

Use these comparison checks

  • Coverage: Does the set include Phillips and flathead sizes, useful hex keys, and the basic gripping and measuring tools?
  • Design: Does the utility knife retract or lock safely? Are handles comfortable and easy to control?
  • Storage: Can you identify each item quickly and keep small bits from disappearing?
  • Durability: Do the tools feel suited to repeated household use rather than a single assembly?
  • Power-tool completeness: For a cordless drill/driver, are the battery, charger, and necessary bits included?
  • Timing: Is the tool needed now, or are you buying it for a project you may never undertake?

There is no universal starter-kit budget, current price, or quantified saving established for this list. Compare the actual contents and construction rather than assuming a larger box is better value.

Common first-time buying mistakes

Buying a contractor inventory on moving day

Large saws, impact drivers, pry bars, specialty sockets, and wet/dry vacuums can be excellent tools, but they add cost, storage needs, and learning requirements. Buy them when a defined project or property feature warrants them.

Choosing quantity over useful coverage

A kit with many pieces may still omit the screwdriver sizes, safe knife, level, or pliers you need. Count useful tool types and sizes, not the number printed on the package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring storage and maintenance

Tools left loose in a damp garage can rust, and missing bits turn a complete-looking kit into an incomplete one. Store tools dry, return small pieces to their container, and replace disposable blades when they dull.

Using the wrong tool for the job

A screwdriver is not a pry bar, pliers are not a substitute for a wrench when the fastener requires one, and a drill/driver should not be used without the correct bit. Forcing a tool increases the chance of damage or injury.

Skipping protection for “small” jobs

Flying fragments, sharp packaging, dust, and unexpected slips do not depend on the size of the project. Put on the protection appropriate to the material and tool before starting.

A practical first-purchase sequence

  1. Inventory what came with the home. Check moving boxes, existing drawers, and any tools transferred by the previous owner.
  2. Buy the compact hand-tool core. Get screwdrivers or a multi-bit driver, claw hammer, tape measure, small level, retractable utility knife with spare blades, hex keys, pliers, a flashlight, and safety glasses.
  3. Add a container. Keep the set together in a small tool bag or box so it is ready for routine work.
  4. Handle immediate mounting needs carefully. Purchase fasteners and anchors for the actual wall and load instead of relying on a random assortment.
  5. Add a cordless drill/driver if your first projects justify it. Evaluate weight, battery and charger inclusion, bits, and future battery compatibility.
  6. Expand from evidence. After a repair or project reveals a recurring need, buy the specialized tool that solves it; until then, borrow or hire for occasional, high-cost equipment when appropriate.

Bottom line for a new homeowner

The smartest first toolkit is small, capable, and organized. Cover everyday fastening, measuring, cutting, gripping, lighting, and personal protection first. A cordless drill/driver is the logical early power-tool addition when you have furniture, shelving, or repeated screw-driving ahead. Everything else—from a stud finder and receptacle tester to saws and a wet/dry vacuum—can wait until your home or a specific project proves it belongs in your kit.
