The Essential Guide to Choosing the Right TV Aerial for Your Home

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most UK homes receiving live Freeview, the safest general choice is a properly installed outdoor or loft-mounted wideband aerial. But the right aerial depends on your postcode, transmitter, signal quality, building, cable route and number of rooms—not simply on a product’s advertised “gain”.

Check the Freeview Detailed Coverage Checker before buying. It identifies the likely transmitter, bearing, aerial group and predicted reception. Indoor aerials can work in strong-signal areas; boosters are useful for some multi-room systems but can make reception worse when the signal is already strong. Any roof, mast or chimney work should normally be completed by a qualified installer.

Do you need an aerial?

You need an aerial connection for live terrestrial Freeview channels on a TV or recorder. A smart TV does not automatically replace an aerial: its internet apps can provide streaming and catch-up services, but live terrestrial broadcasts still require a suitable signal unless you use another delivery system.

You may not need an aerial if you only watch streaming or catch-up services over broadband. Satellite, cable and internet-TV services use their own equipment. Freeview Play combines terrestrial channels with internet-delivered features, so the exact experience depends on the TV or recorder.

Mount the antenna high, near a window facing local broadcast towers (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels), to avoid obstacles and interference. Actual Reception depends on location, terrain, and weather, always re-scan for channels after moving the antenna. If you have any issues, please contact us. We will provide professional service and a satisfactory solution for you.

In a flat or managed building, check for a communal aerial outlet before buying equipment. Ask neighbours whether their reception works and report faults to the landlord, managing agent, housing association or building manager. Do not install an external aerial without checking your lease and permission requirements.

Check coverage and the transmitter before buying

The nearest transmitter is not necessarily the correct one. A main transmitter may offer more services, while a relay transmitter serves a smaller area and may carry only the most popular channels. The correct choice is the transmitter predicted to serve your address and provide the regional services you want.

  1. Open the Freeview Detailed Coverage Checker.
  2. Enter your full postcode and, where available, your house number.
  3. Record the most likely transmitter and its bearing.
  4. Review the predicted reception for each main multiplex, rather than looking only at an overall result.
  5. Note whether reception is classified as served, marginal or poor, and check for alternative transmitters.
  6. Record the aerial group shown under the current and any future prediction.
  7. Save the results before asking for quotations.

A green or “served” result means the planning standard is met; amber or “marginal” reception may be usable but variable; red or poor reception may be unacceptable for many viewers. These are predictions, not guarantees. Roof height, trees, terrain, neighbouring buildings, orientation and local obstructions can produce materially different results between nearby properties. An installer’s on-site measurement is more reliable when reception is difficult.

Where signals from more than one transmitter overlap, a TV may store duplicate or incorrect regional channels, sometimes in channel numbers above 800. The solution may be a manual retune using the intended transmitter’s information—not a new aerial.

Wideband or grouped aerial?

Wideband aerials

A wideband aerial is also called Type W, Type T or a total aerial. It covers the full range used for digital terrestrial television and is the sensible general-purpose replacement when the local requirement is uncertain. Freeview recommends a wideband aerial for best results, while recognising that local transmitter conditions can differ.

Wideband is not automatically technically superior in every location. Its main advantages are flexibility and reduced dependence on one local frequency arrangement.

Grouped aerials

A grouped aerial is designed for a narrower range of UHF channels. It may perform well where a known transmitter uses a concentrated frequency group, but it can miss desired multiplexes if those frequencies fall outside the aerial’s design range. It may also be less flexible if transmission arrangements change.

Choose a grouped aerial only when the address and transmitter have been checked and the design has been verified by a competent installer. Do not rely on labels such as “digital”, “HD” or “4K” as evidence of compatibility.

Indoor, loft or rooftop aerial?

Location Best suited to Main advantages Common limitations
Indoor Strong predicted reception, temporary setups and rented homes Low cost, quick to test and no external work Walls, reinforced concrete, appliances, furniture and room position can affect reception
Loft Good reception where an external aerial is undesirable Discreet and protected from weather Roof materials, foil-backed insulation, metal structures, low height and long cable runs can reduce signal margin
Rooftop Marginal reception, obstructions, long cable runs and multi-room systems Usually provides the clearest path and greatest installation flexibility Higher cost and requires safe external installation

Indoor aerials

An indoor aerial can be a practical choice near a window facing the transmitter in a strong-signal area. It is not a universal substitute for a rooftop aerial. Electrical equipment, walls and people moving around the room can affect reception. A “powered” indoor aerial is not automatically more sensitive, and a claimed range is no substitute for a coverage check.

  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).

Loft aerials

A loft aerial may work where the roof construction does not significantly obstruct the signal and there is a reasonably clear path towards the transmitter. Foil-backed insulation, metalwork and solar-panel equipment may interfere with reception. Loft installation can also make accurate alignment and future maintenance more difficult.

Rooftop aerials

A rooftop aerial is often the most appropriate option for difficult terrain, obstructions, several rooms or a property with a history of unreliable reception. It is not automatically the answer to every weak-signal problem: a different transmitter, better alignment, improved cable route or higher mounting position may be more effective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does aerial gain mean?

Gain is not a simple quality score and there is no universal dB figure that every home needs. Higher gain can help when the incoming signal is genuinely weak, the aerial is correctly aligned and the rest of the system is sound.

It may be irrelevant or harmful when the problem is interference, reflections, a wrong transmitter, damaged cable or poor connectors. Excessive signal can overload the TV or amplifier and cause blocky or broken pictures. The correct gain depends on the complete receiving system and should be determined by measurement where reception is marginal.

Do you need a booster or splitter?

Do not buy a booster first. A distribution amplifier may be appropriate when one good aerial feeds several rooms, when the cable run is long, or when measurements show that splitting has reduced an otherwise adequate signal below usable levels.

A booster cannot correct wrong alignment, transmitter selection, interference, water ingress, a damaged aerial or faulty connectors. Homes close to a transmitter can suffer overload from too much signal; Freeview warns that an unnecessary booster may cause blocky or broken pictures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A passive splitter simply divides the signal and introduces loss. For multi-room installations, a properly specified distribution amplifier is generally more suitable. Unused outputs should be correctly terminated, and external connections should be weatherproofed.

Inspect the complete signal path

The aerial is only one part of the system. Before replacing it, check:

  • Cracked, crushed, loose or water-damaged coaxial cable.
  • Corrosion or movement at the aerial, mast or bracket.
  • Loose plugs and poorly fitted connectors.
  • Damaged wall plates.
  • Unnecessary joins and cheap passive splitters.
  • The power supply of any existing amplifier.
  • Whether another outlet or TV works.
  • Whether a known-good short cable changes the result.

If only one room has a problem, suspect that room’s cable, wall plate or splitter before replacing the roof aerial. A new aerial cannot compensate for a degraded distribution system.

What to look for when buying

  • Bandwidth: choose wideband unless local transmitter evidence supports a grouped model.
  • Technical documentation: look for meaningful performance information rather than “digital”, “HD”, “4K” or exaggerated range claims.
  • CAI certification: where available, it provides evidence that specified technical performance has been tested. The CAI explains that certification is voluntary and does not prove construction quality, durability or reception at every address.
  • Construction and warranty: check materials, weather resistance and warranty terms separately from technical certification.
  • Installation components: establish whether the price includes a mast, bracket, cable, connectors, amplifier, labour and removal of the old equipment.
  • Cabling: use suitable, properly screened coaxial cable and weatherproof external connections. CAI also operates a cable certification scheme.

The aerial does not create 4K or HD. Those depend on the transmitted service and the TV or recorder’s tuner and display capabilities. Gold-plated plugs and “powered” branding do not guarantee improved terrestrial reception.

Repair, replace or retune?

All channels are missing

  1. Check that the TV is on its terrestrial aerial input.
  2. Check the aerial connection and try a known-good cable.
  3. Test another outlet or TV if available.
  4. Check Freeview service and transmitter information.
  5. If it is a communal system, ask neighbours and contact the responsible manager.
  6. Arrange professional diagnosis if the aerial, cable or amplifier is inaccessible or damaged.

Some channels are missing

Check the Detailed Coverage Checker’s multiplex results. The selected transmitter may not carry the service, the aerial group may be unsuitable, one multiplex may be below the usable threshold, or a cable, splitter or interference problem may be affecting only part of the signal.

The picture breaks up or pixelates

Possible causes include marginal reception, interference, loose connectors, water ingress, damaged cable, multiple transmitters or signal overload from a booster. Check signal quality as well as strength: a high strength reading does not prove that the signal is clean. TV manufacturers use different scales, so universal percentage thresholds are not reliable.

Reception changes in wind or rain

Wind may expose a moving aerial, loose bracket or damaged mast. Rain can reveal water ingress or a marginal system. Inspecting the roof safely and measuring the system is preferable to assuming a particular aerial type is required.

Channels appear in the 800 range

This commonly means the TV has stored duplicate services from another transmitter. Use the intended transmitter’s data for a manual retune. Menu names vary, but the relevant option is usually under the TV’s Channel, Setup, Installation or Tuning menu; consult the model manual for exact steps.

DIY or professional installation?

DIY is reasonable for connecting an existing aerial, replacing a short indoor lead, testing an indoor aerial in a strong-signal area or retuning the TV.

Use a qualified installer for roof access, mast or chimney work, external cable routing, multi-room distribution, persistent reception faults, signal measurement, communal systems and suspected storm or structural damage. Roof work carries fall and property-damage risks and is not ordinary consumer DIY.

Freeview points readers towards GetMeViewing.org.uk and GetMeDigital.com for installer directories. When requesting quotes, provide your postcode, likely transmitter, desired rooms, existing outlet information, whether the aerial is indoor, loft or rooftop, and whether you want cable replacement, amplification, removal of old equipment and a signal test included.

How much does a new aerial cost?

Freeview cites £150 as an industry-guidance typical figure for an aerial replacement, but this is an indicative figure rather than a guaranteed or current universal price. Location, roof access, mounting requirements, cable length, amplifier equipment, number of rooms and removal of old equipment can all change the final quotation. Obtain an itemised quote rather than comparing aerial prices alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying checklist

  1. Decide whether you need live Freeview or only internet services.
  2. Check the address with the Freeview Detailed Coverage Checker.
  3. Identify the predicted transmitter, bearing, aerial group and multiplex coverage.
  4. Inspect the existing aerial, cable, connectors, outlets and splitters.
  5. Choose indoor, loft or rooftop installation according to signal conditions and building constraints.
  6. Prefer wideband unless local evidence supports a grouped aerial.
  7. Consider CAI-certified products where available, without treating certification as a guarantee.
  8. Use amplification only after checking signal quality and distribution losses.
  9. Retune after correcting physical faults, and manually tune when transmitters overlap.
  10. Use a qualified installer for external, communal or complex work.
