The LG WM8900HBA washer and DLEX8900B dryer are a strong starting point if you want a well-rated matching set without moving straight to a premium-priced pair. Consumer Reports gives the pair an overall score of 85 and lists it at $2,200 in its 2026 Buying Guide, where it is marked Recommended and Smart Buy. That printed price is a guide figure, not a live quote; check today’s price and confirm the exact models are available as a compatible set before ordering.
The right choice still depends on your laundry-room layout, household loads, dryer fuel, and budget. These eight matching pairs cover front-load, high-efficiency (HE) top-load, agitator top-load, and compact options. Consumer Reports’ overall scores combine test results with survey data for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction; they are not percentages, and the guide’s pair table does not show the detailed test sub-scores needed to assign a specific cleaning or noise advantage to an individual model.
What is the best washer and dryer set?
For a front-load pair balancing score and guide-listed price, consider the LG WM8900HBA washer and DLEX8900B dryer. Consumer Reports lists an overall score of 85 and a $2,200 pair price in its 2026 Buying Guide, and labels it Recommended and Smart Buy. “Value” here means a comparatively attractive combination of that score and listed price—not a separate tested value award.
The guide identifies 12 top-performing matching pairs across four categories, but the eight below are the options for which it supplies model numbers, overall scores, and pair prices in the available table. Its selection is not the full universe of tested pairs. Prices are those printed in the 2026 guide, not verified current retail prices.

How to choose between front-load, HE top-load, and agitator sets
Front-load
Front-loaders are worth considering when you want a door at the front of the machine or need a stackable arrangement. Stacking is model-specific: verify the manufacturer’s guidance, required stacking kit, clearances, and whether you can comfortably reach the controls after installation. EPA guidance says certified front-load washers use 45% less energy and 50% less water than top-load agitator washers. That comparison is between those two washer categories, not a claim about every individual pair or dryer.
HE top-load
HE top-load washers avoid the front door and may suit a room where a front-load door’s swing would be awkward. Compare the exact washer’s certification and efficiency figures rather than assuming all top-load designs use the same amount of water or energy. The LG WT8600CB/DLEX8600BE and WT7000CW/DLE7000W pairs are the guide-listed options here.
Traditional agitator top-load
An agitator model is a separate category from an HE top-loader, so compare it on its own terms. The listed option is LG WT8205CW with DLE8200W. Do not infer a model-specific stain-removal, gentleness, or cycle-time advantage from the pair’s overall score alone.

Compact
Choose compact equipment when dimensions rule out a full-size pair, not simply because “compact” sounds more efficient. The Miele WXI860WCS/TXI680WP is the compact pair in the guide’s selected recommendations. Measure the installation route and usable laundry-room space before deciding whether it fits.
Which washer and dryer set is the most reliable?
No single pair in the listed table can be called the most reliable based on its overall score alone. Consumer Reports says its overall score combines test results with survey data for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction; the pair table does not expose the reliability sub-score for each model. An overall score therefore is not a model-specific reliability ranking.
Separate owner-satisfaction results provide category context, but they do not establish long-term reliability or cleaning performance. J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Appliance Satisfaction Study, released July 15, 2026, was based on 28,411 evaluations and fielded from April 2025 through April 2026. Maytag ranked highest in front-load washer satisfaction at 741, with LG at 740 and Whirlpool at 739. LG led top-load washer satisfaction at 719, followed by Samsung at 716 and Maytag at 704. Samsung led clothes-dryer satisfaction at 727; LG scored 715. These are satisfaction rankings across brands, not model-level test results, and they do not show that a brand’s washer and dryer make a superior matching pair.
What should you check before buying a set?
Measure the room and the delivery route
Measure width, height, and depth at the installation space, then account for doors, hoses, venting, and the clearance needed to open the washer and dryer. Measure the full route through entries, halls, stairways, and turns—not only the final alcove. Check the dryer’s fuel type and vent requirements against what the home can support.

Match capacity to your actual loads
Think about typical load size and bulky items such as bedding. A larger drum is useful only if it suits your space and laundry habits. ENERGY STAR likewise advises considering both placement and typical load size because washer widths and capacities vary.
Compare efficiency on the exact washer model
Check current certification and product-finder entries for the exact model number in the ENERGY STAR washer guidance and product finder. The figures can change, and certification should not be assumed from a similar model name.
Rank #3
- Exclusive Installation Bundle: Includes 3-Prong and 4-Prong Dryer Power Cords, Washer Hose Set, 8-ft Vent Duct, and 1-Year CPS Protection Plan
- Smart Wi-Fi Enabled: Control washer and dryer remotely via SmartThings app
- 4.4 cu ft capacity Washer with Active & vibration reduction tech
- Easy to Use and Navigate
- Self Clean keeps the tub fresh without harsh chemicals
- IMEF combines energy used during the cycle and standby, water heating, and energy to run the dryer; higher is better.
- IWF measures gallons of water per cubic foot of capacity; lower is better.
ENERGY STAR’s current guidance says full-size certified washers use 14 gallons per load versus 20 gallons for standard machines. That is a category-level comparison, not a guarantee for every load or a specific model.
Budget for the whole installation
Compare current pair pricing alongside delivery, installation, required accessories, and any changes needed for the dryer’s fuel or venting. The Buying Guide’s prices are reference figures, so they should not be treated as today’s checkout totals.

Check features against a specific need
For example, Maytag describes its Pet Pro washer as having a built-in filter and its dryer lint trap as designed to trap and remove pet hair; the company also says its front-load washers can be stacked with matching front-load dryers. Those are manufacturer-described features, not independent comparative test findings. See Maytag’s washer and dryer sets for its own product details, and verify the exact models and installation instructions.

Use Consumer Reports’ overall score to narrow the field, then match the category and dimensions to your room. The score combines performance testing with survey data for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Its washer test axes include stain removal, water and energy efficiency, gentleness, noise, vibration, and cycle time, but the cited pair table does not give individual sub-scores. It cannot, by itself, tell you that one listed pair is the quietest or best at stain removal.
Brand-level satisfaction can add another perspective, but it answers a different question from model-specific testing. For the final choice, verify the exact washer and dryer identifiers, current certification, installation compatibility, and current local availability.
