For high cherries, an orchard ladder is the better-supported choice when the ground is sloped or uneven. A fruit-picking basket on an extension pole can reach from the ground, but its tines may not suit cherries and can strip their stems. The right option depends on access, terrain and whether you need to keep the fruit in storage.
Which tool should you use to pick cherries?
There is no supported model-by-model winner here. Oregon State University Extension discusses two ways to reach high cherries: an orchard ladder and a fruit-picking basket on an extension pole. Its advice supports choosing between those categories based on the tree and ground, not ranking brands or specific products. Oregon State University Extension’s guidance on cherry picking on a hill describes an orchard ladder’s three points of ground contact and recommends it for high fruit on sloped terrain.

When an orchard ladder makes sense
For high fruit on uneven terrain
An orchard ladder is the more directly supported option if high branches are on sloped ground. Oregon State Extension describes its three points of ground contact as a reason it can suit a hill better than an ordinary ladder. This is general category advice, not a guarantee that any ladder will be appropriate for a particular slope or tree.

Match the ladder to the site
Before climbing, consider whether the ground can support the ladder securely and whether the intended position lets you reach the fruit without leaning or stretching. The extension guidance does not provide a model specification or substitute for following the ladder manufacturer’s instructions and safe-use guidance.

When a pole basket may be useful
A fruit-picking basket attached to an extension pole lets you reach from the ground, which may be preferable when climbing is unsuitable. But a basket designed for larger fruit may not grip cherries well: its tines can miss or damage fruit and may strip stems. Oregon State Extension flags this cherry-specific limitation, so do not assume that a generic pole picker will handle cherries gently.
Why cherry stems matter
If you plan to store the harvest, preserving stems is useful. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says cherries retain quality best in storage when harvested with stems attached. UC Statewide IPM also recommends keeping stems for better storage. A pole basket that removes stems may therefore be a poor fit for fruit you intend to keep.

What a cherry pitter does—and does not do
A cherry pitter removes pits in the kitchen after the cherries have been picked. It is useful for preparation, but it does not help reach or harvest fruit from a tree. Penn State Extension discusses pitters as post-harvest kitchen equipment in Cherries in the Garden and the Kitchen.

- High branches on sloped ground: Consider an orchard ladder, provided the site and safe-use instructions allow it.
- You need to stay on the ground: A pole basket can extend your reach, but check that its tines are suited to small cherries and handle stems gently.
- You plan to store the fruit: Prioritize a method that leaves stems attached.
- You will use the cherries immediately: Stem removal is less consequential; pick fruit only when it is mature on the tree.
The available guidance does not establish a best brand, model, current price or product-test winner. The most useful choice is the access method that fits your terrain while allowing you to harvest ripe cherries in the condition you need.
