The best tailgate salt spreader is the one that fits your vehicle’s payload and hitch, and can reliably feed the de-icer you plan to use. For compact applications, FISHER’s 3-cu.-ft. QUICK-CASTER models are specified for UTVs, tractors, and several pickup classes; for larger truck loads, Buyers Products and WESTERN offer higher-capacity models with different feed systems and material requirements. These are manufacturer-specification examples, not independently tested rankings.
How to choose a tailgate salt spreader
“Tailgate spreader” can mean a compact broadcast unit or a larger hopper that feeds a spinner by gravity or auger. Match the exact model to the vehicle, mounting arrangement, and material—not just the advertised capacity or the fact that your vehicle has a receiver.
- Vehicle and payload: Account for the spreader and its loaded material within the vehicle’s rated payload. Confirm receiver class, mount geometry, tailgate clearance, and any model-specific vehicle restrictions.
- Material: Check the manufacturer’s stated material compatibility. Bagged rock salt, bulk salt, fine de-icer, and salt/sand mixes do not necessarily flow through the same feed system.
- Capacity and spread: A larger hopper can reduce refill frequency, while a wider stated spread can cover more ground per pass. Manufacturer maximums are specifications, not guarantees of field performance.
- Feed and controls: Gravity-fed systems, augers, gates, and vibrators suit different materials and operating needs. Confirm which components are included and which are optional.
Manufacturer-specified spreader examples
The specifications below help narrow the field by vehicle and material. They are not a hands-on ranking; verify the current product page and installation manual for the exact model before buying.

Which type fits your vehicle and job?
For a UTV, tractor, or smaller-capacity setup
Start with compact models whose manufacturer lists your type of machine, such as the FISHER QUICK-CASTER 300/300G or WESTERN Low Profile 500. That listing is not blanket approval for every ATV or UTV: confirm the exact vehicle’s payload, hitch and mount compatibility, clearance, and the loaded spreader weight. Do not assume an ATV can carry a product simply because the maker mentions UTVs.

For bagged rock salt on a truck
The FISHER QUICK-CASTER 300 and Buyers Products TGS06 both specify bagged rock salt, but their capacities, vehicle listings, and feed designs differ. The TGS06 is listed at 10 cu. ft. for ¾- and 1-ton trucks and uses gravity feed, a manual gate, and a vibrator. Choose based on the vehicle’s rated capacity and the manufacturer’s fitment requirements, not hopper volume alone.
For bulk salt or a salt-and-sand mix
The SaltDogg TGS03 and TGS07 are specified for bulk salt; both also list a 50/50 salt/sand mix, with an optional vibrator noted for the TGS03. The TGS07 has an 11-cu.-ft. hopper and is listed for ¾- and 1-ton trucks. Confirm that the material and its moisture or flow characteristics are acceptable under the current instructions.

For fine de-icing material
FISHER specifies the QUICK-CASTER 300G for fine de-icing materials, while WESTERN lists fine materials for the Low Profile 500 and PRO-FLO line. The Low Profile 500 notes that some materials may require a 5-flight auger. Check the precise material and required configuration with the manufacturer; broad labels such as “ice melt” do not establish compatibility with every product.
Will a tailgate salt spreader fit my ATV or UTV?
Some manufacturers list UTV compatibility, but that does not establish fit on every ATV/UTV or every hitch setup. FISHER specifies a 2-inch receiver and sufficient payload for the selected QUICK-CASTER. WESTERN lists the Low Profile 500 for UTVs and gives a standard Class III receiver mount. Verify that your particular machine has the appropriate approved mount, adequate payload for the spreader plus material, and enough clearance through the full operating range.

A 2-inch receiver by itself is not proof of compatibility. Confirm the hitch class, mount geometry, vehicle limits, and tailgate or body clearance for the exact product. For truck models, also check the listed truck class and any required extender; Buyers Products calls out an extender for flared tailgates on the TGS03 and TGS07.
What salt can I use in a tailgate spreader?
Use only material the spreader maker specifies for that model and configuration. For example, the FISHER QUICK-CASTER 300 is listed for bagged rock salt, while its 300G is intended for fine de-icing materials. Buyers Products lists the TGS06 for bagged #1 rock salt and the TGS03/TGS07 for bulk salt or a 50/50 salt/sand mix, subject to the stated vibrator requirements. WESTERN’s Low Profile 500 covers bagged salt, ice melt, and fine materials, with a possible auger change for some materials.
Rank #4
- Easily mounts to 3/4 ton or 1 ton trucks, offering a secure fit and versatility for larger vehicles, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications and efficient salt spreading

Capacity varies substantially by model: examples here range from FISHER’s 3.0-cu.-ft. QUICK-CASTER to the 11-cu.-ft. SaltDogg TGS07. Capacity in cubic feet describes hopper volume, not a guaranteed weight of salt; actual loaded weight depends on the material. Use the vehicle’s payload rating and the spreader manufacturer’s instructions when determining how much material to carry.

Installation and safe operation
- Confirm fit before loading: Check the vehicle payload with spreader and material aboard, receiver class, mount geometry, clearance, and material compatibility against the current model instructions.
- Install as directed: Secure the unit to the vehicle according to its own manual and heed all decals. Buyers Products’ TGS02 installation instructions specify these precautions for that model; use the current manual for your spreader.
- Keep people clear: Buyers Products’ TGS02 instructions say, “Verify that all personnel are clear of the spreader spray area before starting or operating this spreader.” The warning is model-specific, but keeping people clear of the discharge area is an essential operating check.
- Stop before servicing: Turn the spreader off before adjusting, cleaning, lubricating, or clearing a jam, as directed in the TGS02 instructions. Follow the instructions for your exact model when handling a blockage or performing maintenance.
