Its advantage is physical scale: the rear speakers can place effects behind the seating position, while the subwoofer supplies the impact that a standalone bar usually cannot. It is the strongest choice for a large living room, open-plan space, or movie-focused household. Dialogue is generally strongest when the soundbar is used by itself. Samsung’s Q-Symphony can combine compatible Samsung TV speakers with the soundbar, but RTINGS notes that this can reduce dialogue precision in some circumstances.

Sonos Arc Ultra: best premium single-bar option
The Sonos Arc Ultra is a premium standalone bar designed for a wide, polished Dolby Atmos presentation. It supports HDMI ARC/eARC, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, Sonos Voice Control, and Amazon Alexa, with availability varying by country and language. Sonos lists the bar at approximately 46.38 inches wide and 2.95 inches high.
It is a better fit than the Samsung for buyers who value a clean installation, multiroom music, and gradual expansion. A Sonos subwoofer and rear speakers can be added later, but the initial bar does not provide the discrete rear-channel separation of a full package.

Sonos Beam (Gen 2): best compact soundbar
The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is less than 26 inches wide and is well suited to apartments, bedrooms, and smaller living rooms. It supports Dolby Atmos, HDMI ARC/eARC, Wi-Fi, and AirPlay 2; Sonos also includes an optical adapter for compatible older TVs.
The Beam improves dialogue clarity and front-stage width without dominating a TV stand. It can later be expanded with a Sonos subwoofer and surround speakers. However, it has modest bass, no included rear speakers, and Atmos effects cannot match those of a larger package with a subwoofer and physically placed surrounds.
Buy it if: you need a compact, simple upgrade with strong music and multiroom support.
Skip it if: you have a large room, want powerful bass immediately, or expect theatrical rear effects.

Hisense AX5125H: best budget Atmos package
The Hisense AX5125H is a 5.1.4-channel system with up-firing drivers, a wireless subwoofer, and dedicated rear speakers. It is unusually appealing for buyers who want Atmos and physical surround without paying for a premium flagship system.
It can deliver clearer dialogue and a more immersive movie presentation than most basic TV speakers. The key compromise is connectivity: RTINGS identifies Bluetooth as its primary wireless music option rather than the broader Wi-Fi platforms found on products such as Sonos. Confirm U.S. stock, warranty coverage, exact package contents, and the current price because regional listings can differ.

Buy it if: you want the most complete Atmos hardware for a relatively low cost.

Samsung HW-Q800F: best mid-range bar-and-subwoofer system
The Samsung HW-Q800F is a strong middle ground for buyers who want Dolby Atmos and substantial bass but do not want rear speakers. It is particularly attractive to owners of compatible Samsung TVs because of Q-Symphony integration.
It should not be described as a complete surround package: standard configurations include the bar and subwoofer, not separate rear speakers. It is better for medium-sized rooms and households that want cinematic front-stage sound with simpler installation.

JBL Bar 1300X: best for flexible detachable surrounds
The JBL Bar 1300X is worth considering if rear-speaker placement is awkward. Its detachable wireless speakers can be repositioned and used independently, offering more flexibility than conventional permanently placed rear units.
However, verify the exact 2025 model, included components, availability, and HDMI specifications. JBL’s product line has moved toward later MK2 successors, and a newer or similarly named product should not be substituted into a 2025 comparison without checking its features.

Buy it if: you value movable, detachable surrounds.
Skip it if: you need guaranteed 4K/120Hz passthrough without verifying the exact model.
How soundbar channel numbers work
- 2.0: Left and right channels, with no dedicated subwoofer.
- 3.1: Left, center, and right channels plus a subwoofer. The center channel often helps dialogue.
- 5.1: Adds surround channels.
- 5.1.2: Adds two height channels, commonly through up-firing drivers.
- 11.1.4: A much larger arrangement with multiple horizontal, surround, and height channels.
Channel counts are not directly comparable between brands. Driver quality, processing, room correction, included speakers, placement, and room acoustics can matter more than the number printed on the box.
Will Dolby Atmos work in your room?
Dolby Atmos is an audio format, not a guarantee of overhead sound. A soundbar needs compatible hardware and an Atmos signal from the TV, streaming service, disc player, or console. Up-firing drivers reflect sound from the ceiling, so results depend on ceiling height, shape, reflectivity, seating distance, and whether the room opens into another space.
A low, flat, reflective ceiling is usually more favorable than a high, vaulted, angled, or acoustically absorbent ceiling. A compact bar can create a spacious effect, but it generally cannot match the physical rear separation of speakers placed behind the listener.

HDMI ARC is sufficient for many compressed surround formats and normal TV audio. HDMI eARC offers substantially more bandwidth and is preferable for lossless formats and higher-quality Atmos paths.
The TV, soundbar, source device, and cable path all matter. If a television cannot pass a console’s desired audio format correctly, connecting the console directly to the soundbar may help—but only if the soundbar supports the required video passthrough. Count HDMI inputs rather than simply looking for the words “HDMI.”

Gamers should verify 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and latency support for the exact model. RTINGS, for example, notes that the JBL Bar 1000MK2 has HDMI inputs but does not pass through 4K at 120Hz, limiting passthrough to 4K/60Hz.

Choose by room and installation
- Small room: Choose a compact bar such as the Beam Gen 2. A large flagship system can overwhelm the space and create placement problems.
- Medium room: A bar-and-subwoofer system such as the Q800F is a sensible balance.
- Large or open-plan room: A full package such as the Q990F is more likely to produce enough scale and surround coverage.
Measure the TV stand and check bar height. A tall bar can block the screen or the television’s infrared receiver; wall mounting may be preferable in some installations. Wireless rear speakers and subwoofers still normally require electrical outlets. Keep rear speakers behind or slightly beside the seating position rather than in front of it.
Standalone bar or full package?
Standalone bar
This is the simplest and least cluttered option. It works well for apartments and dialogue upgrades, but it usually produces less bass and less convincing rear surround.
Bar plus subwoofer
This is the best compromise for many living rooms. The subwoofer handles deep effects, allowing the bar to focus more clearly on voices and the front soundstage. Placement still matters because corners and walls can make bass boomy.
Bar, subwoofer, and rear speakers
This provides the strongest immersion for films and games, but costs more, requires more outlets, and depends heavily on correct rear-speaker placement.
Dialogue, music, and smart features
Louder is not automatically clearer. Look for a dedicated center channel, dialogue enhancement, night mode, independent center-level adjustment, and good low-volume performance. Excessive bass or an aggressive wide mode can mask speech. Dialogue enhancement may improve intelligibility but can make voices sound thin or unnaturally forward.
For music, compare wireless features separately from movie performance. Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Chromecast, and multiroom support are more versatile than Bluetooth alone. Sonos offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay 2 on its Arc Ultra and Beam. The Hisense AX5125H is less suitable for listeners who require broad Wi-Fi music integration.
Samsung’s Q-Symphony and LG’s comparable TV integration can be useful when the television and soundbar are compatible, but matching brands is optional. A modern TV with HDMI ARC/eARC will generally work with a soundbar from another manufacturer.

Eclipsa Audio in 2025
Samsung and Google announced Eclipsa Audio at CES 2025 as an emerging immersive-audio format. Early support was limited, with YouTube identified as the meaningful initial ecosystem. It should not be treated as a reason most buyers need to upgrade; Dolby Atmos remains the more practical compatibility consideration for current streaming and disc playback.
Correct setup procedure
- Connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on both devices.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the external sound system.
- Choose bitstream or passthrough where appropriate.
- Disable the TV speakers if both systems play simultaneously or create an echo.
- Run the manufacturer’s room-calibration process from the intended listening position.
- Keep the bar clear of the TV’s IR receiver and screen.
- Place rear speakers behind or slightly beside the seating position.
- Test dialogue, stereo music, standard 5.1, and Atmos content.
- Install firmware updates after basic audio is working.
Menu names vary by TV brand and operating system. If there is no ARC/eARC port, optical output may work for basic audio but can limit Atmos and advanced formats.
Common problems and fixes
- No sound: Check that the cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, external audio is selected, and the soundbar input is correct.
- No Atmos: Confirm compatible content, an Atmos-capable source, passthrough or bitstream settings, and the limits of an optical connection.
- Echo or doubled dialogue: Turn off the TV speakers or correct HDMI-CEC and audio-delay settings.
- Weak or boomy bass: Move the subwoofer away from a corner or wall and rerun calibration.
- Poor height effects: Check ceiling geometry, seating distance, and whether the content actually contains an Atmos track.
- Rear speakers do not work: Confirm pairing, firmware, correct placement, and power connections. Wireless does not mean battery-free.
- Gaming video problems: Connect the console directly to the TV or verify that the soundbar passes 4K/120Hz, VRR, and HDR.
Bottom line
Choose the Samsung HW-Q990F for the fullest 2025 cinema setup. Choose the Sonos Arc Ultra for a premium, expandable one-bar system, the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) for a small room, the Hisense AX5125H for affordable Atmos with included surrounds, and the Samsung HW-Q800F if you want a subwoofer without rear speakers.
