For most small businesses with a permanent office, shop, warehouse, yard, or workshop, the best starting point is a wired PoE camera system with a local NVR. One Ethernet cable carries power and video, the system can keep recording if the internet fails, and you can expand it more predictably than a collection of consumer Wi-Fi cameras.

For a single site, a Reolink PoE NVR system is the strongest value choice. Businesses already using UniFi networking should look at UniFi Protect. If installer support and a professional equipment ecosystem matter more than the lowest hardware price, consider AXIS Companion. For multiple locations, distributed managers, and limited in-house IT, Verkada is the more capable cloud-managed option—but its per-camera licensing materially changes the lifetime cost.

Construction companies should make one distinction before comparing products: a permanent office or equipment yard can usually use a conventional PoE/NVR design, while an active jobsite may need temporary cabling, cellular connectivity, solar or battery power, weather protection, and a plan for preventing the recorder from being stolen along with the cameras.

Quick recommendations

Business situation Best-fit system Why it fits Important caution
One location, limited budget, local recording Reolink PoE NVR Complete PoE kits, 24/7 local recording, person and vehicle detection, remote app access, expandable storage, and no required subscription for core local-recording features. You are responsible for network hardening, storage planning, installation quality, and protecting the NVR.
Business already using UniFi networking UniFi Protect Recordings stay on supported UniFi hardware, cameras and network equipment can be centrally managed, and Protect does not require a recurring Protect license. It is an ecosystem purchase. Third-party ONVIF cameras may not expose all the features of native UniFi cameras.
Small site that needs a professional, installer-led solution AXIS Companion Designed for small systems with remote access, alerts, user management, remote maintenance, and a consistent professional product ecosystem. Hardware, design, and installation typically cost more than a value-oriented kit.
Multiple sites or few internal IT resources Verkada Cloud management, on-camera processing, onboard retention, device-health monitoring, automatic updates, analytics, and centralized administration. Each camera requires an additional license, and cloud connectivity becomes part of the operating model.
High retention, access-control integration, regulated operations, or complex security requirements Axis Camera Station Pro or a comparable professional VMS A more capable video-management and access-control path than an entry-level kit. Plan for a design, installation, support, and integration budget rather than a simple retail purchase.

If you are outfitting a construction office, workshop, or equipment yard yourself, begin by comparing a PoE security camera system with an NVR. Treat the product listing as a starting point—not proof that the cameras, storage, cabling, and network design will meet your actual coverage or retention requirements.

Why PoE is usually the right architecture

Power over Ethernet, or PoE, sends electrical power and network data over one Ethernet cable. For fixed business cameras, that generally means fewer power adapters, a cleaner installation, more predictable connectivity, and easier expansion. It is particularly useful in warehouses, construction yards, workshops, and offices where cameras are mounted in known locations and need continuous recording.

REOLINK 8CH 5MP PoE Security Camera System RLK8-410B4-5MP Black | 4pcs 5MP Wired PoE Cameras for Home Outdoors, 4K 8CH NVR with 2TB HDD for 24-7 Recording, Smart Person/Pet/Vehicle Detection
  • Smart Person/Animal/Vehicle Detection – Smart PoE IP cameras can identify people, animals, and vehicles, minimizing unwanted alerts such as those triggered by animals or shadows. Cameras can also be configured to specify the type of detection when sending alerts to you. Know what happened simply by glancing at the lock screen.
  • Stunning HD Display – This poe security camera system displays at a 2560 × 1920 HD resolution, providing users with crystal-clear footage both during the day and at night.
  • Plug and Play PoE System – The home security camera system includes four 60 ft CAT5 network cables, allowing for easy installation and setup. After connecting the security cameras to the NVR ports, recording and live views can be accessed within seconds via an HDMI monitor.
  • Stable Connection and Digital Signal – Unlike CCTV DVR systems, this wired security camera system‘s video will not lose quality or be degraded by faulty cables. A strong digital signal maintains a 5 MP high-definition image via 330 ft CAT6 or 270 ft CAT5 Ethernet cables. Users will never have to worry about signal degradation from coaxial cables or analog cameras within 100 ft.
  • HDD Storage and Remote Playback – With a pre-installed 2TB HDD, videos can be recorded and stored for ten days without overwriting. Users can add one additional external 8TB HDD via the camera’s e-SATA port. With the free Reolink app, all videos can be played back through your smart device anywhere, anytime.

An NVR, or network video recorder, stores camera footage locally, usually on an internal surveillance-rated hard drive. A local system can continue recording during an internet outage as long as the cameras, network equipment, and recorder still have power. Remote viewing may stop until connectivity returns, but the local recording does not necessarily have to stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PoE is not automatically superior in every location. A temporary jobsite may not have a suitable network, permanent power, or a secure indoor place for the recorder. A remote site may need cellular connectivity or a purpose-built temporary surveillance deployment. Those conditions call for a site survey and a different design rather than simply mounting residential Wi-Fi cameras outdoors.

For more demanding layouts, an NVR-based IP system remains the conventional commercial architecture because it supports higher-resolution cameras, analytics, larger camera counts, and structured expansion. The practical question is whether you need a straightforward local system or a professionally managed video platform around it.

The best systems by business profile

Best value for a single site: Reolink PoE NVR systems

Reolink is the most natural fit for a single-site retailer, contractor, workshop, office, warehouse, or small commercial property that wants a complete system without mandatory monthly fees for its core local-recording functions. Current Reolink kits combine PoE cameras with a dedicated NVR, local 24/7 recording, remote app access, person and vehicle detection, and expandable storage.

The product range also gives a small business room to grow. The RLK16-842D8-A supports up to 16 cameras and up to 12 TB of storage. The NVS8-12MB61DLC3 is an 8-channel system with up to 12 TB of storage, 12 MP cameras, and a 180-degree Duo 2 PoE camera. Bundle contents, camera compatibility, and availability can change, so verify the exact NVR, included cameras, drive capacity, and expansion limits before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Reolink when you want local evidence, a relatively accessible hardware cost, and control over storage. It is especially sensible for a permanent construction office or yard where Ethernet cable can be routed to a protected NVR location. The tradeoff is that you—not a managed security provider—must handle firmware updates, strong user accounts, remote-access configuration, network isolation, backUPS or exports, and recovery when a component fails.

In the value category, a Reolink PoE security camera system is worth comparing against other kits because it combines the cameras, recorder, and local-storage model in one purchase. Do not assume that a larger advertised camera count means every included camera can record at the advertised resolution simultaneously, or that the included drive will meet your desired retention period.

Best for an existing UniFi network: UniFi Protect

UniFi Protect makes the most sense when the business already uses UniFi switches, gateways, access points, or a supported UniFi console. Recordings are stored locally on compatible UniFi hardware by default rather than being automatically backed up to the cloud. Protect remote management does not require recurring Protect licensing fees, and compatible hardware can process AI features locally.

A CloudKey+ is positioned for smaller Protect deployments and supports up to 12 cameras. UniFi also offers larger NVR options for businesses that need more storage, more cameras, or longer retention. Capacity figures depend on the particular console, NVR, camera mix, drive configuration, and recording settings, so use Ubiquiti’s current compatibility and capacity information for the exact hardware combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UniFi can also provide an ONVIF migration path for compatible third-party cameras. That does not guarantee feature parity: native UniFi cameras may offer deeper integration, while an ONVIF camera may have reduced access to analytics, events, configuration, or other platform features.

UniFi Protect is a strong choice for a contractor with an existing UniFi network and the technical ability to administer it. It is less attractive if you would be buying an entire network ecosystem solely to operate a few cameras. Budget for the console or NVR, PoE switching, storage drives where applicable, and someone who will maintain the network.

Best professional small-site platform: AXIS Companion

AXIS Companion is designed as an end-to-end surveillance solution for small systems with basic surveillance requirements. It provides remote access, alerts, user management, remote maintenance, and a path from one site to multiple sites. Axis positions the S3008 Recorder and compatible cameras as a scalable, integrated solution for smaller deployments.

This is the better fit when the business values installer guidance, consistent equipment, warranty coverage, product support, and a professional vendor ecosystem more than the lowest upfront price. A construction company with a valuable equipment yard, several offices, or a customer-facing facility may prefer having a documented design and an accountable installer rather than troubleshooting a retail kit internally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for a project quote that identifies the cameras, recorder, storage target, mounting hardware, network equipment, labor, configuration, warranty, replacement process, and ongoing maintenance. AXIS Companion is usually less compelling for a very small single-site business whose only priority is maximizing camera count per dollar.

Best cloud-managed and multi-site option: Verkada

Verkada is built around centralized cloud management. Cameras perform processing on the camera, retain footage on onboard storage, and use the cloud for administration, remote access, analytics, device health, and multi-site visibility. Current Verkada materials state that onboard retention ranges from 30 to 365 days depending on the camera model. Verkada’s pricing catalog also identifies an additional required license for each camera.

REOLINK 5MP 8CH Home Security Camera System with 2TB HDD RLK8-520D4-5MP | 4pcs 5MP Wired PoE IP Cameras Outdoor with Person/Pet/Vehicle Detection, 4K 8CH NVR with 2TB HDD for 24-7 Recording
  • CAPTURE CRIME FROM DETAILS: Discover potential crime has never been so easier with superior 5MP HD. With advanced IR lights, you can see up to 100ft in the dark, helping to protect your property and loved ones even at night.
  • SMART PERSON/ANIMAL/VEHICLE DETECTION – Smart PoE IP cameras can identify people, animals, and vehicles, minimizing unwanted alerts triggered by bugs or leaves (please upgrade to the latest firmware version). Filter out true threats and get to know what happened simply by glancing at the lock screen. General motion detection is also available.
  • PLUG & PLAY: With everything needed, the poe security camera system can be easily installed even by yourself. Just hook all the poe cameras up with the NVR and you can enjoy your whole new security system day and night.
  • HEAR THE EVIDENCE: Watch and also hear every detail of surroundings and make sure everything is under control. With the built-in microphone, you won’t miss any suspicious noise or conversation when the crisis arises with just one click to turn the function on.
  • HDD Storage and Remote Playback – Including a pre-installed 2TB HDD, videos can be recorded and stored for ten days without overwriting occurring. Users can add one additional external 8TB HDD via the camera’s e-SATA port. With the free Reolink app, all videos can be played back through your smart device anywhere, anytime.

This model can be valuable when a construction company has several offices, distributed job locations, regional managers, or no employee who wants to maintain an NVR fleet. Automatic updates, health monitoring, centralized user administration, and searchable analytics can reduce operational work across locations.

The cost is not just the camera. Include the license for every camera, the expected renewal period, installation, networking, and any cloud archive or advanced-feature charges in the total cost of ownership. Verkada cameras process and store video locally, but internet connectivity is used to send metadata and enable cloud viewing, archiving, and advanced functions. Those services can increase bandwidth usage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verkada is therefore a poor value for a small single-site business that specifically wants subscription-free local recording. Before signing, ask what footage remains available if a license expires, what continues working during an internet outage, how exports are handled, and what data is stored in the cloud.

Best for higher-assurance commercial deployments: a professional VMS

Some businesses outgrow entry-level systems because surveillance is part of a broader security program. Examples include long or formally defined retention, access-control integration, advanced analytics, multiple facilities, regulated operations, formal audit requirements, or a need for guaranteed support and documented maintenance.

Axis offers Camera Station Edge, Camera Station 5, and Camera Station Pro. Camera Station Pro is positioned as the more powerful video-management and access-control platform. Comparable integrator-led VMS platforms may also be appropriate, but this category requires a design based on the site’s risk, camera count, retention, network, and access-control requirements.

For these projects, a security integrator for small business can be more useful than a product comparison. The integrator should document camera views, storage calculations, network segmentation, user roles, support response, software licensing, export procedures, and what happens if the recorder, internet connection, or vendor service is unavailable.

Local NVR, cloud, or hybrid: choose this before comparing megapixels

Local NVR

  • Advantages: Local 24/7 recording, continued local operation during an internet outage, no mandatory per-camera cloud fee for many systems, and direct control of storage.
  • Disadvantages: The NVR is a physical theft or damage risk, drives eventually need replacement, remote access requires secure networking, and storage management is your responsibility.
  • Best for: Permanent offices, stores, workshops, warehouses, and equipment yards with reliable cabling and a secure place for the recorder.

Cloud-managed video

  • Advantages: Centralized administration, easier remote access, user management across sites, automatic updates, device-health information, and less local server infrastructure.
  • Disadvantages: Recurring license costs, vendor dependence, internet and bandwidth requirements, cloud data-governance questions, and possible loss of features or access when a license expires.
  • Best for: Multi-site businesses, distributed managers, remote operations, and organizations with limited in-house IT.

Hybrid operation

A hybrid design preserves local recording while adding cloud management, remote access, or selected archival workflows. This can reduce the effect of an internet outage without giving up centralized administration. Verkada is explicitly built around local onboard storage plus cloud management. Reolink and UniFi can be operated primarily around local recording with optional remote access or archival workflows, depending on the specific configuration.

Ask four questions before purchasing:

  1. Does the system continue recording if the internet connection fails?
  2. Does remote viewing require the vendor’s cloud service?
  3. Is cloud backup included, optional, or charged separately?
  4. What happens to recorded footage and remote access if a cloud license expires?

Construction-business planning: premises versus active jobsites

Permanent office, shop, or equipment yard

A conventional PoE/NVR layout is usually the most dependable starting point. Common views include the main entrance, rear or side doors, cash-handling or dispatch areas, workshop entrances, loading zones, fuel or material storage, vehicle gates, and the approaches to high-value equipment. Mount the NVR in a locked, access-controlled room rather than next to an easily visible camera monitor.

Outdoor cameras need appropriate weather protection and mounting. Protect exterior cable from tampering, use weatherproof junction boxes where required, and avoid placing every camera where a ladder or piece of equipment can reach it. A UPS should cover the NVR, PoE switch, router, and relevant internet equipment if short power interruptions are a concern.

Active construction jobsite

A jobsite has different constraints. Power may be temporary, the network may not exist yet, the camera positions may change, and the recorder may be exposed to theft, dust, weather, or unauthorized access. A fixed NVR kit may be excellent in the site office but unsuitable if there is no secure place to install it or no reliable wired network between camera locations.

For a temporary site, ask an installer to evaluate cellular connectivity, temporary or solar power, battery runtime, weather and vandal resistance, mounting and relocation, local versus cloud recording, bandwidth charges, and how footage will be retained after the project ends. A purpose-built remote deployment may cost more than a retail kit but avoid the false economy of installing cameras that cannot stay powered, connected, or secure.

Do not use a public livestreaming service for private security footage. A public-facing webcam or promotional view is a separate use case from incident evidence, employee monitoring, or customer surveillance.

How many cameras and NVR channels do you need?

Count views, not just doors. A small retail or contractor facility may need separate views for entrances, checkout or dispatch, the sales or work floor, a stockroom, a loading area, the vehicle gate, and exterior approaches. One wide-angle camera may technically include several areas while putting too few pixels on the person or vehicle you need to identify.

Make a coverage map and mark:

  • Every entrance and exit, including emergency and delivery doors.
  • Cash-handling, dispatch, tool-storage, fuel, and high-value equipment areas.
  • Loading docks, material yards, gates, and vehicle approaches.
  • Blind spots created by shelving, walls, vehicles, containers, or changing jobsite structures.
  • Areas where employees or customers may reasonably expect privacy.

Then add expansion capacity. Leave spare NVR channels and PoE-switch capacity for future cameras. A 16-channel system is a practical upper-bound reference for a growing single site, while UniFi publishes console camera limits and provides larger NVRs as capacity and retention requirements increase. AXIS Companion can expand from one site to multiple sites, and Verkada is designed to centralize larger camera fleets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remember that channel count is not the same as storage capacity, network capacity, or usable performance. Check the recorder’s supported resolutions, simultaneous recording limits, PoE budget, drive bays, and compatibility list.

Cabling, PoE budget, and network design

Use properly installed Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable, label both ends, protect exterior runs, and document the cable route. A PoE connection can support runs up to approximately 300 feet under suitable conditions; the practical limit depends on cable quality, installation conditions, PoE class, connectors, and the network design. Longer runs may require a PoE extender, another switch, or a different architecture.

Do not check only the number of PoE ports. Check the switch’s total power budget and the expected draw of every camera, especially models with heaters, infrared illumination, PTZ motors, or other higher-demand features. If cameras are distributed across a large yard or building, a managed PoE switch may be easier to monitor and segment than several unrelated injectors.

A PoE network switch for security cameras is useful when the NVR does not have enough integrated PoE ports or when cameras are distributed across a network. Verify the switch’s PoE standard, total wattage, uplink speed, VLAN features, environmental rating, and compatibility with the selected cameras before buying it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camera networks should not simply share an unrestricted network with point-of-sale systems, office computers, or sensitive servers. NIST guidance warns that a compromised camera can be used to attack other local or remote targets. The FTC likewise recommends separating cameras from other devices, using strong unique passwords, applying updates, enabling encryption, and using multifactor authentication where available.

At minimum, use a separate camera VLAN or network where practical, change default credentials, disable services you do not need, restrict remote access, update firmware, and create individual user accounts. If the business cannot maintain those controls, a camera network security service or managed IT provider may be a worthwhile part of the installation rather than an optional afterthought.

Storage and retention: calculate it instead of trusting a day count

Retention depends on the number of cameras, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, compression, audio, motion activity, and whether each camera records continuously or only on events. A system advertised as providing a certain number of days may deliver fewer days after additional cameras, higher bitrates, audio, or continuous recording are enabled.

For a rough planning estimate using decimal gigabytes:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage in GB ≈ bitrate in Mb/s × 10.8 × retention days × number of cameras

For example, eight cameras recording continuously at an illustrative 4 Mb/s for 14 days would require approximately 4.8 TB before overhead and filesystem differences: 4 × 10.8 × 14 × 8 = 4,838 GB. The actual setting for each camera matters, so confirm the estimate with the selected manufacturer’s storage calculator or recorder documentation.

Reolink’s cited systems provide built-in storage with expansion options. UniFi NVRs use configurable drive capacity and publish representative camera-support and storage figures. Verkada lists model-dependent onboard retention separately from its required camera licensing. These are different storage models and should not be compared by headline camera resolution alone.

Users can add one additional external 8TB HDD via the camera’s e-SATA port. With the free Reolink app, all videos can be played back through your smart device anywhere, anytime.

When selecting local storage, look for a surveillance-rated drive designed for continuous recording. A surveillance hard drive is the relevant accessory when expanding or replacing NVR storage, but confirm the NVR’s supported capacity, drive-bay layout, warranty requirements, and installation procedure first. A larger drive does not automatically provide a fixed number of days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a written retention target, such as the number of days needed for delayed discovery of theft or property damage. Export important footage before it is overwritten, preserve the original time information where possible, record who made the export, and store incident files in a controlled location. Test playback and export before an incident occurs.

Resolution, lenses, lighting, and placement

Megapixels do not by themselves determine whether footage identifies a person or license plate. Lens angle, distance, lighting, shutter speed, mounting height, glare, nighttime illumination, and compression all matter.

  • Wide-angle cameras: Cover more area but place fewer pixels on a distant subject.
  • Varifocal or telephoto cameras: Better for entrances, cash registers, loading docks, gates, and longer identification distances.
  • Optical zoom: More useful than digital cropping when a specific detail must be inspected.
  • Dome cameras: Often useful indoors or where a less obvious profile is preferred.
  • Bullet cameras: Often suitable for clearly aimed exterior coverage, provided the mounting is protected.
  • Fisheye, multisensor, PTZ, and remote cameras: Useful for specialized coverage, but each requires careful placement and configuration.

Reolink’s 4K range includes models with optical zoom. Verkada offers camera families including dome, bullet, fisheye, multisensor, PTZ, and remote models. Choose the camera type based on the scene rather than buying the same camera for every location.

Before finalizing the installation, test the actual field of view at the intended mounting height. Avoid pointing cameras directly at bright windows or low sun. Use privacy masks where appropriate, check night footage rather than relying on daytime views, and make sure the camera can see faces at the entrance instead of only the tops of people’s heads.

Privacy, audio, and workplace policy

Business cameras can capture employees, customers, visitors, delivery drivers, and sensitive activities. Do not install cameras in locations where people reasonably expect privacy. Define the purpose of each camera, limit access to people who need it, and post notices where appropriate.

Audio requires particular caution. Federal and state interception laws differ, and states retain authority to legislate about interception of communications. Before enabling microphones, determine whether audio is necessary, document the business purpose, review the rules in the relevant jurisdiction, post appropriate notices, and obtain local legal advice. Disabling audio by default is often the more prudent choice when sound is not essential.

The FTC recommends collecting only what the business needs, controlling access, securing data in transit and at rest, assessing service providers, and verifying that privacy and security features work as advertised. Facial recognition and other biometric analytics should not be enabled casually. Verkada provides privacy controls for features such as facial recognition and selective face blurring, but a technical control does not replace a written policy or legal review.

DIY or professional installation?

DIY installation can be reasonable when the building is small, cable routes are accessible, the NVR can be secured, and someone on staff can maintain passwords, firmware, storage, and exports. It is less suitable when cameras cover a large yard, cable runs pass through difficult areas, the system must integrate with access control, or downtime has a significant business cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a commercial security camera installer or low-voltage contractor when you need a coverage design, exterior mounting, structured cabling, lift or roof access, network segmentation, UPS planning, multi-site configuration, or documented handover. Require the proposal to state exactly what is included: camera models and lenses, mounting, cable type and length, PoE equipment, recorder and drive capacity, retention estimate, configuration, remote access, user roles, training, warranty, maintenance, and response times.

For a construction company, professional installation is especially valuable when the system must move between jobsites or cover changing site conditions. The right question is not simply whether the installer can mount a camera; it is whether the complete system will remain powered, connected, secure, and useful after the site changes.

Buying checklist

  1. Map indoor, outdoor, entrance, cash-handling, loading, employee-area, equipment-yard, and jobsite coverage.
  2. Choose local NVR, hybrid, or cloud-managed architecture before comparing camera megapixels.
  3. Write down the required retention period and calculate storage for the intended number of cameras and recording mode.
  4. Confirm PoE port count, total PoE budget, cable routes, outdoor ratings, low-light performance, and UPS requirements.
  5. Check support for individual users, role-based access, multifactor authentication, encryption, audit logs, privacy zones, and secure remote access.
  6. Determine whether microphones are enabled and whether audio is legally and operationally necessary.
  7. Verify what continues working during an internet outage and what stops when a cloud license expires.
  8. Ask about firmware-support duration, warranty terms, replacement availability, and export formats before purchase.
  9. Segment cameras and recorders from point-of-sale systems and ordinary office devices.
  10. Test live view, night view, playback, notifications, remote access, export, and incident-footage preservation before relying on the system.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by resolution alone: A poorly aimed 12 MP camera may be less useful than a correctly placed camera with the right lens and lighting.
  • Using Wi-Fi everywhere: Wireless cameras can be convenient, but fixed business coverage is more vulnerable to signal, power, and congestion problems than properly installed PoE.
  • Ignoring the recorder: The NVR’s channel count, storage, compatibility, and physical security are as important as the cameras.
  • Putting the NVR beside the entrance: If a thief can take the recorder, local footage may disappear with the cameras.
  • Underestimating storage: Continuous recording, high bitrate, audio, and additional cameras consume storage faster than a headline retention number suggests.
  • Exposing cameras to the whole office network: Segmentation and secure accounts reduce the consequences of a compromised device.
  • Forgetting the internet and license dependency: Cloud viewing, cloud archiving, advanced analytics, and remote administration may stop or change when connectivity or licensing changes.
  • Leaving microphones or biometric features enabled by default: Use only what the business needs and review the legal and policy consequences first.
  • Failing to export evidence: Important footage can be overwritten while a business is waiting for an incident to be investigated.

Frequently asked questions

Do small businesses need an NVR?

Not always, but an NVR is usually the best fit for a permanent site that needs continuous local recording and predictable expansion. Cloud-managed cameras can reduce local infrastructure, while a jobsite may require a temporary cellular or hybrid design.

Will a PoE camera record if the internet goes down?

A local NVR system can generally continue recording if the local cameras, switch, recorder, and power remain available. Remote viewing and cloud-dependent features may stop. Confirm the behavior for the specific system, and put the NVR, PoE switch, router, and relevant network equipment on suitable backup power if short outages matter.

How many cameras should a construction company install?

Start with the views required to identify activity: entrances, gates, loading areas, equipment and material storage, dispatch or cash-handling areas, and approaches to the building or yard. Count blind spots and future expansion, then select an NVR and PoE switch with spare capacity. A camera count without a coverage map is not a reliable design.

Are security cameras with audio legal?

There is no single answer for every location or use. Federal and state interception laws differ, and workplace notice and consent requirements may apply. Determine whether audio is necessary, review the rules in every relevant jurisdiction, and seek local legal advice before enabling microphones.

Is Verkada worth the subscription cost?

It can be for multi-site businesses that value centralized administration, device health, updates, analytics, and limited on-site IT work. It is usually harder to justify for a small single-site business whose priority is subscription-free local recording. Compare the full license and renewal cost with the labor and support cost of maintaining a local system.

The Bottom Line

For most small businesses with a permanent location, buy a wired PoE system with a local NVR and spare capacity. Reolink is the value-oriented starting point; UniFi Protect is the natural choice for an existing UniFi network; AXIS Companion is the professional small-site option; and Verkada is the cloud-managed choice for multi-site operations.

For construction companies, spend as much time on placement, cable routes, power, storage, network segmentation, and jobsite conditions as on camera resolution. If the site is temporary, remote, high-value, or difficult to cable, obtain a design from a commercial installer rather than forcing a residential kit into a commercial problem.
