For most outdoor cooks, the Ooni Karu 2 is the best all-purpose pizza oven in this comparison: it supports wood and gas, has a 12-inch cooking surface, reaches 750°F and, according to Tom’s Guide, heats its stone in 10–12 minutes. Choose the Solo Stove Pi Prime for the simplest beginner-friendly propane setup, the Gozney Roccbox when portability is the priority, the Ooni Koda 16 for large pizzas, and an electric model when live fire is impractical. The right choice depends less on the headline temperature than on fuel, pizza size, heat recovery, location and how much setup you want to manage.

Which pizza oven should you buy?

These ovens suit different cooking situations rather than one universal winner. The table below separates the leading options by fuel, capacity and use case.

Gozney Arc Lite Propane 12.8 inches 930°F Small patios and balconies Tom’s Guide reports 26 pounds and a stone temperature of 420°F after 15 minutes; it has no built-in temperature display.
Ooni Koda 16 Gas 16 inches 950°F Large pizzas and entertaining Bon Appétit reports the stone reaching 950°F in under 20 minutes and Neapolitan pizzas in about 90 seconds.
Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo Electric Not stated Not stated Indoor electric cooking TechGearLab names it its best electric oven.
Ninja Artisan Outdoor Pizza Oven Electric Not stated 700°F Outdoor electric cooking Tom’s Guide reports an 18–20 minute heat-up and thin-crust pizzas under three minutes in testing.

What is the best outdoor pizza oven?

The Ooni Karu 2 has the broadest combination of fuel flexibility, manageable size and credible performance evidence. Tom’s Guide lists it as its best outdoor pizza oven, while TechGearLab independently selects it as its best multi-fuel oven.

Its wood-and-gas configuration lets you choose convenience or a more involved live-fire session. The 12-inch format is large enough for standard personal pizzas but remains easier to place and move than a 16-inch oven. Tom’s Guide reports a 750°F maximum and a 10–12 minute stone heat-up in its testing. You still need to monitor the flame and rotate pizzas because a high air temperature does not guarantee an evenly heated floor.

What is the best pizza oven for beginners?

The Solo Stove Pi Prime is the clearest beginner and budget choice when propane is available. Propane provides push-button-style ignition and steady heat without feeding a wood fire, and Tom’s Guide lists a 13-inch cooking surface and temperatures up to 950°F.

Tom’s Guide says its testers baked a pizza in as little as 90 seconds. The compromises are a smaller practical capacity than large-format ovens and less exterior insulation, so leave clearance around the oven and use heat-resistant surfaces as directed by the manufacturer.

Which pizza oven is most portable?

Choose the Gozney Roccbox if you regularly move an oven between a patio, vehicle or campsite. TechGearLab names it the most portable model, and Gozney’s product information lists folding legs, a built-in thermometer, propane operation and an optional wood burner.

Gozney states that the Roccbox can reach up to 500°C and cook pizza in under 60 seconds. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent guarantee for every dough, weather condition or loading technique. Its 12-inch format favors portability over batch size.

Is the Gozney Arc Lite suitable for a balcony or small patio?

The Arc Lite is a compact propane option for space-limited outdoor kitchens. Tom’s Guide lists a 12.8-inch cooking surface, a 26-pound weight and a 930°F maximum, and reports the stone reaching 420°F in 15 minutes.

It is not designed for large-group pizza sessions, and it lacks a built-in temperature display. An infrared thermometer is therefore useful for checking the stone before launching dough. Verify building, landlord and fire-safety rules before using any live-flame appliance on a balcony.

What is the best pizza oven for large pizzas?

The Ooni Koda 16 is the strongest fit when a 16-inch pizza surface matters. The larger floor gives you room for bigger pies and makes turning easier, but the oven occupies more space and is less convenient to transport than 12-inch models.

Bon Appétit reports that the Koda 16 stone reaches 950°F in under 20 minutes and that it can cook a Neapolitan pizza in about 90 seconds. Forbes Vetted selected it as its overall winner after making 150 pizzas with a dozen ovens. Those figures describe the cited publications’ methods and should not be treated as a guaranteed result in every setup.

Should you choose gas, wood, multi-fuel or electric?

Fuel determines the work involved, the flavor profile and where you can safely operate the oven.

Gas

Gas is the simplest live-fire route: ignition and temperature adjustment are quick, and there is no ash to remove. It is usually the practical choice for frequent weeknight cooking, but you must store and connect the cylinder safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wood

Wood adds smoke and the ritual of tending a fire, while requiring dry fuel, fire management and ash cleanup. Heat can fluctuate as the fire builds or dies down, so cooks need to watch both the flame and the cooking floor.

Multi-fuel

Multi-fuel ovens such as the Karu 2 let you switch between convenience and wood-fired cooking. That flexibility is valuable, but it also means buying and storing more than one fuel type and learning two heat-management methods.

Electric

Electric ovens avoid propane cylinders and wood smoke, making them useful where live fire is restricted. TechGearLab names the Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo its best electric oven. For outdoor use, Tom’s Guide reports that the Ninja Artisan reaches 700°F in about 18–20 minutes and cooked thin-crust pizzas in under three minutes in testing. Electric models generally do not reach the temperatures associated with wood-fired ovens, and indoor and outdoor ratings are not interchangeable.

What specifications matter most?

  • Cooking diameter: 12-inch ovens suit individual pizzas and smaller households; 16-inch floors are better for entertaining but need more room.
  • Stone heat and recovery: Check how quickly the floor heats and how well it recovers between pizzas, not just the advertised maximum air temperature.
  • Opening and turning space: A wide enough opening makes launching and rotating easier, especially with larger dough.
  • Temperature measurement: A built-in thermometer is convenient. If one is absent, budget for an infrared thermometer.
  • Portability: Weight, folding legs, handles and detachable burners determine whether the oven can travel.
  • Accessories: A properly sized peel, weather cover and (for compatible models) a wood burner can materially change the complete setup.

How should you plan the setup and first cook?

  1. Confirm the location: Use a stable, non-combustible surface with the manufacturer’s required clearance. Check local rules for propane, wood smoke and balcony use.
  2. Choose one fuel for the first session: Gas is easier for learning launch and rotation; add wood after you understand the oven’s heat zones.
  3. Preheat the floor, not only the air: Use the oven’s display or an infrared thermometer where available. The stone must be hot enough to set the base without burning the top.
  4. Prepare a small first pizza: A 10–12-inch pie is easier to launch and turn than an oversized one. Use a lightly floured peel and avoid leaving wet dough on it.
  5. Rotate early and watch the rim: Pizza ovens heat unevenly. Turn the pizza as the leading edge colors, then move it away from the strongest flame if the crust is browning too quickly.
  6. Allow recovery: Wait for the floor to regain heat before launching the next pizza, especially after a large or wet pie.
  7. Shut down safely: Turn off gas at the appliance and cylinder, let the oven cool completely, and remove ash only when it is cold.

What are the main buying mistakes?

  • Buying a 16-inch oven for a small patio without measuring its footprint and required clearances.
  • Choosing by maximum temperature alone while ignoring floor heat, recovery and the need to rotate.
  • Assuming an indoor electric oven can be used outdoors, or vice versa, without checking its rating.
  • Forgetting the peel, cover and thermometer when calculating the total setup.
  • Expecting sub-90-second cooking from cold conditions, an underheated stone or heavily topped dough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a pizza oven stay outside all year?

Only if the manufacturer permits outdoor storage and you protect it with the specified cover. Moisture, freeze-thaw cycles and wind can damage burners, stones and finishes, so many owners move the oven under cover after it has cooled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do pizza ovens need a gas regulator?

Gas models require the regulator and hose specified for that model and fuel cylinder. Do not substitute fittings: an incorrect pressure or connection can cause poor combustion or a serious safety hazard.

Why is the bottom of my pizza burning before the top cooks?

The stone may be hotter than the air above it, or the pizza may be sitting in the flame’s hottest zone. Let the floor moderate, move the pizza toward the cooler side and rotate more frequently; reduce toppings that release water slowly.

Is a pizza oven useful for foods besides pizza?

Yes. Once the oven is at a lower, controlled temperature, you can cook flatbreads, vegetables, fish or small roasting dishes if the cookware is rated for the heat. Keep fats and handles away from direct flame and follow the oven’s manual.
