The best pillow for a side sleeper is high enough to fill the shoulder-to-mattress gap without pushing the head upward. Among the expert-tested options reviewed for 2026, Saatva is the strongest high-support choice, Eli & Elm offers the most distinctive ergonomic shape, and Pillow Cube is the most specialized for dedicated side sleepers. Adjustable Coop models are safer when you are unsure of your ideal loft or switch between side and back sleeping.
There is no single best pillow for every side sleeper. The right choice depends mainly on the space between your shoulder and mattress, your shoulder width, how much your mattress compresses, and whether you stay on your side all night. In this expert-tested group, the Saatva Latex Pillow is the strongest overall choice for substantial, plush support; the Eli & Elm side-sleeper pillow is the most purpose-built ergonomic design; and the Pillow Cube Side Cube is the most specialized option for dedicated side sleepers.
For a pillow you can fine-tune, choose a Coop adjustable pillow. For breathable, buoyant latex support, consider the Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow. For a hot sleeper who prefers solid memory foam, the higher-loft Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow is the more targeted pick.
The recommendations below draw on Good Housekeeping testing involving 200 pillows and more than 1,000 consumer testers, as well as Sleep Foundation evaluations performed in its Seattle-based Test Lab. Their winners differ because their testing methods, scoring systems, and editorial categories differ—not because one source necessarily got the answer wrong.

Our picks, explained
1. Saatva Latex Pillow: best overall for high support
Sleep Foundation names the Saatva Latex Pillow its best overall side-sleeper pick and gives it a 9.6/10 Test Lab score. It combines shredded Talalay latex with down-alternative fill, producing a medium-soft surface feel without the flat, easily compressed sensation of some soft pillows.
Good Housekeeping separately names it the best latex pillow for side sleepers. Its testers liked the roughly 6- to 7-inch thickness, gusset, responsive latex fill, and organic cotton sateen cover. In weighted testing, the pillow maintained its shape, which matters for side sleepers because a pillow that collapses during the night can leave the head tilted toward the mattress.
#1 Best Overall
- 54-Inch Full Coverage – A 20x54 body pillow that extends from head to toe for full-body support, wrapping you in soft comfort whether you're side sleeping, nursing, or simply need extra cushioning.
- Multipurpose Comfort – This long bed pillow cradles your shoulders, hips, abdomen, and back, maintaining body contours for side sleeping or during pregnancy, so you wake up refreshed, not sore.
- Soft Plush Fill – Filled with plush polyester and wrapped in soft, breathable fabric, the body size pillow stays lofty night after night, giving you the cozy, huggable comfort you crave for deep sleep.
- Durable Design – Made for everyday use, this long body pillow maintains its shape and softness without flattening, so you enjoy comfort for the long haul without needing replacements.
- Easy Care – You can spot-clean the body pillow to keep it clean. Simple maintenance that fits your lifestyle without complicated washing instructions.
Choose it if: you have broad shoulders, prefer a plush but substantial pillow, or want resilient latex support without a firm block of foam.
Think twice if: you are smaller-framed, sleep on your back regularly, or are unsure whether you need a tall pillow. The loft is not adjustable, so you cannot remove material if the pillow pushes your head upward. The latex interior should not be laundered or exposed to moisture; follow the product’s care instructions and wash only the removable components that the manufacturer permits.
2. Eli & Elm Cotton Side-Sleeper Pillow: best ergonomic shape
Sleep Foundation gives the Eli & Elm Cotton Side-Sleeper Pillow an 8.9/10 Test Lab score and identifies it as its best side-sleeper choice. Its U-shaped or oblong profile creates a recessed area for the shoulder while the upper portion supports the head and neck. That geometry is different from simply buying a taller rectangular pillow: it attempts to preserve head support without forcing the shoulder to compete for the same space.
The reviewed construction is described as 75% shredded latex or shredded memory foam and 25% polyester fiber. Its medium-to-high loft and adjustable fill let you add or remove material to change the height and firmness. Sleep Foundation’s testers found the shape helpful for even spinal alignment, while back sleepers generally preferred less fill.
Choose it if: a standard rectangular pillow presses into your shoulder, you experience ear pressure from sleeping against a conventional edge, or you want a shoulder-contouring shape with some height adjustment.

Think twice if: you move frequently between your side and back and do not want to adjust the fill, or you prefer a familiar rectangular pillowcase and appearance. The shape is specialized, and extra fill may involve an additional cost.
3. Pillow Cube Side Cube Original: best for dedicated side sleepers
Good Housekeeping names the Pillow Cube Side Cube its best overall side-sleeper pillow. The design uses rectangular 90-degree edges rather than the tapered shape of a traditional pillow. Those edges are intended to fill the horizontal space from the mattress-side shoulder to the neck, while the foam keeps a stable shape under the head.
The official product description identifies the Side Cube Original as a 5-inch, 12-by-24-inch memory-foam pillow made specifically for side sleepers. Its cover is removable, but the foam core should not be washed. Good Housekeeping’s pressure testing found that the foam maintained its shape, and its testers considered the design particularly effective for people who sleep almost exclusively on their sides. The product also includes a softer middle intended to reduce ear pressure.

- Easy To Care For: The soft, removable and washable pillowcase ensures hassle-free maintenance while the hidden zipper offers scratch-free comfort for daily use. It is a practical choice among side sleeper pillows for adults and pregnancy pillows
- Great for All Needs: Available in 47.2”×9.8”, 35.4”×9.8”and 53”×9.8”to fit your needs. Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, this long body pillow offers adaptive support to enhance your rest. Use it when you read, work or just relax
Choose it if: you are a true side sleeper who wants a stable, firm, purpose-built shape and does not want to adjust loose fill.
Think twice if: you often roll onto your back, prefer a soft or rounded pillow, or are uncertain about a 5-inch loft. The fixed height and rigid geometry are the reason it works so specifically for some side sleepers—and the reason it is less forgiving for others. The manufacturer also says it is not the best fit for people who frequently sleep on their backs.
4. Coop Home Goods Premium Original Adjustable Pillow: best for changing positions
Good Housekeeping names the Coop Home Goods Premium Original Adjustable Pillow its best choice for neck pain among the tested side-sleeper options. That is a testing category, not evidence that the pillow treats a medical condition. Testers rated it highly for comfort and support, while the shredded memory foam and microfiber-cluster fill let users change the pillow’s height and firmness.
Adjustability is particularly useful when you are not sure how much loft you need, switch between side and back sleeping, or have recently changed mattresses. You can begin with more fill for side sleeping, then remove material if your head is pushed too far forward or upward. The trade-off is that shredded fill requires trial and error: material can migrate, and you may need to redistribute it after washing or during the first few nights.
Choose it if: you want one pillow that can accommodate side and back sleeping, need to fine-tune the height, or value a washable construction. Good Housekeeping found both the outer cover and inner pillow washable in its testing.
Think twice if: you want a pillow that feels perfectly shaped straight out of the package or are concerned about surface durability. Good Housekeeping reported that the outer cover can pill over time.
Coop’s related Coop adjustable pillow range also includes the Eden Adjustable Pillow, which is aimed at side-to-back sleepers and warmer sleepers. Coop describes the Eden as using cooling gel-infused memory foam and offering a crescent-shape option, with Queen and King sizing. Its current product information lists a 100-night guarantee and five-year warranty, but guarantee, warranty, sizing, and availability terms should be checked before purchase because they can change.
5. Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow: best for breathable neck support
Sleep Foundation names the Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow its best pillow for neck pain among the side-sleeper selections and gives it a 9.0/10 Test Lab score. Again, that label describes the publication’s category, not a clinical treatment claim. The pillow uses medium-firm Talalay latex that cushions pressure points while remaining responsive rather than allowing the head to sink deeply.
Brooklyn Bedding describes the pillow as having an organic cotton cover and offering low- and high-loft versions. That two-height choice makes it more adaptable than a fixed-height latex pillow. The high-loft version is the logical starting point for a broad-shouldered side sleeper or someone on a firm mattress; the low version may be more comfortable for a smaller frame, a softer mattress, or a sleeper who rotates onto their back.

- FULL-BODY U-SHAPED SUPPORT ON BOTH SIDES – The 57-inch ALLOPERA pregnancy pillow surrounds the body and supports the head, neck, back, belly, hips, knees, and legs at the same time. Its connected U-shaped design keeps supportive cushioning on both sides and replaces the need for multiple bed pillows.

- ADJUSTABLE LOFT AND FIRMNESS – The zippered inner cover gives you direct access to the filling. Remove some filling for a lower, softer feel, or keep the fuller loft for more cushioning and support as your body and sleep preferences change.
- PLUSH COMFORT THAT RECOVERS ITS SHAPE – Filled with soft, high-resilience polyester fiber, this maternity pillow provides cloud-like cushioning without feeling unsupported. The resilient filling expands after compression and helps the pillow recover its loft after regular use.
- CERTIFIED MATERIALS AND EASY CARE – Made with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified materials. The removable outer cover is machine washable, while the separate zippered inner cover keeps the filling securely contained. Reposition the pillow for pregnancy sleep, postpartum rest, side sleeping, reading, or relaxing.
Choose it if: you sleep warm, like a buoyant pillow that springs back quickly, or want latex support with a choice of loft.
Think twice if: you prefer the slow, deeply contouring feel of solid memory foam. Latex has a distinct springy response. Sleep Foundation also notes a comparatively short 30-night trial, so review the current return terms before ordering.
6. Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow: best for hot side sleepers
Sleep Foundation gives the side-sleeper version an 8.1/10 Test Lab score and recommends the higher profile for side sleepers who need more head and neck support. The pillow uses medium-firm solid memory foam for pressure relief and stability, paired with cooling materials.
Helix describes the Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow as available in high- and low-loft versions. The high version is listed at approximately 5.1 inches on the official product page, while Sleep Foundation reports the side-sleeper profile at about 5.25 inches. Helix positions the high version for side sleepers and the low version for back and stomach sleepers. The construction combines a cooling cover with a cooling gel memory-foam core.
Choose it if: you sleep hot but prefer the stable, pressure-relieving feel of solid foam rather than the springiness of latex.
Think twice if: you have a small frame, sleep on a deeply cushioned mattress, or need a pillow that can be washed in a machine. The high profile may be too tall, and the interior insert should not be machine washed.
How much loft does a side sleeper need?
Side sleepers generally need more loft than stomach sleepers because the pillow must bridge the gap between the downward-facing shoulder and the mattress. But there is no universal correct thickness. A 6- to 7-inch pillow may work for a broad-shouldered person on a firm mattress and be excessive for a smaller-framed person on a soft mattress.
Use these factors as a starting point:
- Broad shoulders: begin with a higher-loft pillow or one with a shoulder-contouring design. Saatva, the high-loft Brooklyn Bedding model, and the high-loft Helix are logical fixed-height starting points.
- Firm mattress: start somewhat higher because the shoulder sinks less into the surface. This is an alignment-based inference rather than a direct clinical finding.
- Small frame or soft mattress: begin with less fill or choose an adjustable pillow such as Coop or Eli & Elm. The shoulder may already sink deeply enough that a fixed 5- to 7-inch pillow becomes too tall.
- Frequent back sleeping: avoid committing to a rigid, tall side-only shape. Consider Coop, Eli & Elm with reduced fill, or a flexible Helix adjustable cooling model instead of the fixed Pillow Cube.
How to tell whether your pillow is the right height
- Lie in your usual side-sleeping position. Use your normal mattress and keep your shoulder on the mattress rather than partly on the pillow.
- Check your head and neck from behind. Your neck should look broadly level with the rest of your spine—not bent toward the mattress and not angled upward away from it.
- Watch your nose and chin. Your nose should point generally forward rather than toward the mattress or ceiling. A chin pushed toward the chest often indicates that the pillow is too tall or too firm.
- Notice pressure points. Persistent pressure under the ear, along the shoulder, or at the side of the neck suggests that the shape, firmness, or edge may be wrong for you.
- Test the other position you actually use. If you roll onto your back, check whether the pillow forces your head forward. An adjustable pillow can usually be made lower for that position; a fixed side-sleeper pillow cannot.
These checks help you assess fit, but they do not diagnose or treat neck, shoulder, or spinal conditions. Persistent, severe, or worsening pain, numbness, weakness, or other symptoms warrant advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Which pillow material is best for side sleeping?
Latex
Talalay latex is responsive, resilient, and generally breathable. It cushions without the deep sink associated with some memory foam, making it useful when you want your head supported near the surface. Saatva and Brooklyn Bedding are the latex-focused choices here. Latex can have a springier feel and requires different care from washable synthetic fill.
Solid memory foam
Solid memory foam offers stable support and pressure relief. It is useful for sleepers who dislike their pillow shifting or compressing, as with the Pillow Cube and Helix GlacioTex. The compromises are less adjustability, more sensitivity to fixed loft, and more limited washing options for the foam core.
Shredded fill
Shredded latex, shredded memory foam, and fiber clusters can be moved or removed to adjust height. That flexibility makes Coop and Eli & Elm particularly suitable when your ideal loft is uncertain or your sleeping positions change. Shredded pillows can require more maintenance because the fill may clump or migrate.
How the expert testing was done
Good Housekeeping reports testing 200 pillows with more than 1,000 consumer testers. Its process included multiple nights of home use, wash testing where applicable, and pressure testing with weights comparable to an average head. Testers assessed comfort, support, temperature regulation, and related factors, generating more than 6,800 data points.

Its categories include conforming, support, temperature regulation, and off-gassing, and its 2026 side-sleeper guide reports numerical Test Lab scores for selected products.
Those methods are useful evidence about construction, feel, support, and temperature performance, but they are not clinical trials. Test scores from the two publications should not be treated as directly interchangeable, and a high score cannot guarantee that a pillow will suit your body, mattress, or sleeping habits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the experts chose different winners
Sleep Foundation selects Saatva as its best overall side-sleeper pillow and Eli & Elm as its best side-sleeper choice. Good Housekeeping selects Pillow Cube as its best overall side-sleeper pillow and separately highlights Coop, Purple, Beckham, and Saatva in its recommendations. The difference reflects distinct tester groups, procedures, scoring systems, and category definitions.
For that reason, treat the labels as use-case guidance rather than a universal ranking. A fixed 5-inch cube may be ideal for a dedicated side sleeper but unsuitable for someone who spends half the night on their back. An adjustable pillow may be less immediately structured but a better purchase when your loft requirement is uncertain.

Care and buying considerations
- Check what can actually be washed. Foam and latex interiors commonly require spot cleaning or airing out, while covers may be removable and washable. Do not put the Saatva latex interior or Pillow Cube foam core in the wash, and do not machine wash the Helix insert.
- Use a protector when appropriate. A washable pillow protector can reduce exposure to sweat, oils, and accidental spills, particularly when the pillow’s internal foam or latex cannot be laundered. It should not be so tight that it changes the pillow’s loft.
- Allow for adjustment time. Adjustable pillows often need several nights of changing, removing, and redistributing fill. Keep removed fill in a clean, sealed place rather than discarding it immediately.
- Review current trial and warranty terms. Product policies, prices, discounts, sizes, inventory, and warranty conditions are volatile. Sleep Foundation notes a 30-night trial for the Brooklyn Bedding pillow, while Coop’s current Eden information lists a 100-night guarantee and five-year warranty; verify the terms that apply to your purchase.
- Do not choose by firmness alone. A firm pillow can still be the wrong height, and a plush pillow can still provide adequate support if its internal structure and loft are right. Alignment and pressure relief matter more than a firmness label by itself.
Bottom line
Choose the Saatva Latex Pillow if you want a plush, high-support latex pillow and are confident that its fixed loft will suit you. Choose the Eli & Elm Cotton Side-Sleeper Pillow if shoulder clearance and an adjustable ergonomic shape are your priorities. The Pillow Cube Side Cube Original is the most specialized choice for people who stay almost exclusively on their sides.
When your sleeping position or ideal height is uncertain, start with the Coop Home Goods Premium Original Adjustable Pillow. Hot sleepers should compare the breathable latex feel of the Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow with the cooling-cover, solid-foam feel of the Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should a pillow be for side sleeping?
Side sleepers usually need more loft than stomach sleepers because the pillow must fill the space between the shoulder and mattress. The correct height depends on shoulder width, mattress firmness, body size, and how much the mattress compresses. A higher pillow is often a starting point for broad shoulders or a firm mattress, while smaller-framed sleepers and people on softer mattresses may need less loft or adjustable fill.
Is a firm pillow better for side sleepers?
Not necessarily. Firmness and height are separate characteristics. A pillow can be firm but too tall, or plush but sufficiently supportive if it maintains its loft. Choose a height that keeps your neck level and a feel that relieves pressure without forcing your head upward.
Recommended Free Tools
Is memory foam or latex better for side sleepers?
Yes, but the choice depends on your preferences. Solid memory foam provides stable support and pressure relief, while shredded memory foam can be adjusted. Latex is more responsive and breathable but has a springier feel. The Pillow Cube and Helix GlacioTex use solid foam; Coop and Eli & Elm use adjustable shredded fill; Saatva and Brooklyn Bedding use latex-based designs.
How can I tell if my side-sleeper pillow is too high?
A pillow is probably too tall if your head tilts upward, your chin is pushed toward your chest, or you feel pressure along the side of your neck. If it is too low, your head may angle toward the mattress and your neck may feel unsupported. Adjustable models such as Coop or Eli & Elm let you test smaller changes rather than replacing the entire pillow.
Do side sleepers need a pillow with a shoulder cutout?
A shoulder cutout is not essential, but it can help if a conventional rectangular pillow presses into your shoulder or ear. The Eli & Elm uses a U-shaped or oblong profile for shoulder clearance, while the Pillow Cube uses a specialized rectangular shape and a softer middle intended to reduce ear pressure.
Can a pillow cure neck or shoulder pain?
A pillow may help maintain a more comfortable sleeping position, but the testing summarized here does not establish that any pillow cures neck pain, corrects a cervical disorder, or permanently changes spinal posture. Seek qualified medical advice for persistent or severe pain, numbness, weakness, or other concerning symptoms.
