For a grinder explicitly marketed for raw-food and soft-bone preparation, the STX Turboforce II 4000 Series Size #12 is the clearest candidate in this comparison. Its manufacturer claims that it can process soft chicken, rabbit, squirrel, and quail bones, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than independent performance testing. If you will prepare only boneless meat, the LEM BigBite #12 and Weston Pro Series #12 have stronger documented meat-grinding specifications and are more straightforward choices.

No grinder makes homemade cat food nutritionally complete, and no #12 grinder is automatically safe for every type of bone. The right purchase depends first on whether your batches are boneless or bone-in, then on capacity, plate sizes, reverse and overload protection, clean-up, parts support, and the exact manual for the model you buy.

Model Best suited to Documented specifications Bone-use evidence
STX Turboforce II 4000 Series Size #12 Readers specifically seeking a grinder marketed for raw-food preparation and soft bones 2,000 W peak motor; claimed 175–225 lb/hour; high, low, reverse, stop/reset, foot pedal; three-year repair warranty Manufacturer claims suitability for soft chicken, rabbit, squirrel, and quail bones. Verify the exact manual and model suffix.
LEM BigBite #12, 0.75 HP High-volume boneless batches and buyers prioritizing stainless construction and warranty support Claimed approximately 11 lb/min; 2.25-inch head opening; stainless knife, head, auger, and pan; 4.5 mm and 10 mm plates; stuffing plate; circuit breaker; five-year warranty Not established by the cited product evidence. Do not infer bone capability from the #12 size or motor rating.
Weston Pro Series #12, model 10-1201-W Large boneless batches, home processors, and hunters who also want stuffing accessories 1 HP/750 W motor; claimed 6–9 lb/min; stainless construction; reverse; coarse and medium plates; stuffing kit; listed five-year warranty Evidence supports meat grinding and stuffing, not bone grinding.
Weston model 33-1301-W A simpler #12 option for boneless preparation 1 HP/750 W motor; approximately 4 lb/min claimed capacity; two speeds; reverse; 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm plates; sausage-stuffing kit Not established by the cited listing. Limit its use to boneless preparation unless the current manual expressly approves a particular bone type.

Capacity figures are manufacturer or retailer claims, not guaranteed results. Meat temperature, chunk size, fat content, plate selection, and technique can substantially change actual throughput.

1. STX Turboforce II 4000 Series Size #12: best exact-model candidate for the raw-food use case

The STX Turboforce II 4000 meat grinder is the strongest fit when the defining requirement is not merely grinding meat, but finding a model whose manufacturer explicitly discusses raw-food preparation and soft bones. STX describes the machine as a size #12 electric grinder and markets it for B.A.R.F. bones-and-raw-food diets.

STX claims that the grinder can handle soft chicken, rabbit, squirrel, and quail bones. That wording matters: it does not establish that the machine is suitable for beef bones, weight-bearing bones, large bones, frozen bones, or any bone prepared in a way the current manual does not permit. The dossier contains no independent test confirming the claim.

  • Motor claim: 2,000 W peak.
  • Advertised capacity: 175–225 lb/hour, equivalent to roughly 2.9–3.75 lb/min on paper.
  • Controls: high, low, reverse, and stop/reset.
  • Convenience feature: foot pedal.
  • Warranty listed: three-year repair warranty.

Why choose it: It is the only model in this research set with an explicit manufacturer soft-bone and raw-food positioning.

Why not treat it as universally bone-capable: STX product-page sections reportedly show different model suffixes. Before buying, match the exact model number, included plates and accessories, electrical requirements, warranty terms, and seller to the current manufacturer documentation. Do not assume that a listing with a similar name has the same internal components or approved uses.

2. LEM BigBite #12: best premium alternative for boneless batches

The LEM BigBite #12 is the better-documented choice for readers whose actual workload is large quantities of boneless meat. LEM lists a 0.75 HP stainless-steel grinder with approximately 11 lb/min of claimed capacity, a 2.25-inch head opening, and stainless construction for the knife, head, auger, and pan.

The included equipment is useful for changing texture and handling different jobs: LEM lists 4.5 mm and 10 mm plates plus a stuffing plate. A built-in circuit breaker provides overload protection, although it is not a substitute for using the correct feed rate or clearing a jam according to the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best use: repeated boneless batches where throughput and stainless components matter.
  • Documented capacity: approximately 11 lb/min, under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.
  • Texture options: 4.5 mm and 10 mm plates.
  • Protection: built-in circuit breaker.
  • Warranty listed: five years, with lifetime customer support listed by LEM.

The cited LEM page does not establish that this model is intended for grinding bones. A #12 head, stainless auger, or relatively high horsepower does not prove bone capability. Unless the current LEM manual specifically approves the bone type and preparation you intend to use, treat this as a meat-only grinder.

3. Weston Pro Series #12: high-capacity boneless option

The Weston Pro Series #12, identified in the product evidence as model 10-1201-W, is another substantial machine for boneless preparation. Weston documentation and retailer information describe a 1 HP/750 W motor and claimed throughput of 6–9 lb/min.

It has stainless construction, reverse, coarse and medium plates, and a stuffing kit. That combination makes it a practical fit for people preparing large quantities of boneless meat or who want one machine that can also handle sausage-stuffing tasks.

  • Best use: larger boneless batches and general home meat processing.
  • Advertised capacity: 6–9 lb/min.
  • Controls and accessories: reverse, coarse and medium plates, and stuffing kit.
  • Warranty listed: five years in the available retailer information; confirm the exact terms for your seller and model.

The available evidence supports meat grinding and stuffing, not bone grinding. Do not promote or purchase this model on the assumption that its 1 HP motor makes it a bone grinder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Weston 33-1301-W: simpler #12 choice for boneless preparation

The Weston 33-1301-W is a lower-specification alternative for readers who want a #12 grinder for boneless meat without the documented throughput or stainless accessory package of the more premium options. The cited Home Depot listing describes a 1 HP/750 W grinder with approximately 4 lb/min claimed capacity.

Its listed features include two speeds, reverse, three plates measuring 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm, and a sausage-stuffing kit. The additional plate sizes may be helpful when a cat accepts one texture better than another.

Use this model as a boneless recommendation only. The cited listing does not support a bone-grinding recommendation. If a current official manual expressly permits a specific soft bone, follow that documentation exactly; otherwise, do not improvise.

How to choose the right grinder

Decide whether bone grinding is actually required

This is the most important decision. A grinder sold for meat is not automatically a bone grinder. If your formulation uses boneless meat and obtains calcium or other minerals through a professionally specified supplement protocol, a meat-only grinder may be the more appropriate and less ambiguous purchase.

If you require bone-in processing, demand explicit documentation for the exact model and the exact bone type. In this comparison, STX provides the clearest soft-bone claim. That still does not make it a universal bone grinder. Hard, dense, oversized, weight-bearing, or improperly prepared bones can damage equipment, create blockages, or produce pieces that are unsafe for a cat.

Use head size and capacity as workload indicators, not promises

A #12 grinder is a middle-to-heavy-duty format useful for batch preparation, but advertised figures are not directly comparable. One manufacturer may test with chilled boneless meat and a coarse plate; another may use different chunks, fat content, or operating conditions. The STX’s 175–225 lb/hour claim, LEM’s approximately 11 lb/min claim, and Weston’s 6–9 lb/min or approximately 4 lb/min claims should therefore be treated as specification-sheet indicators rather than expected household results.

For a home user, a machine that can technically process a large quantity may still be inconvenient if it is difficult to lift, store, disassemble, or clean. Buy for the quantity you can safely prepare and sanitize, not simply the largest number in the specification table.

Compare plate sizes with the texture your cat will accept

Plate diameter affects the texture of the finished mixture. LEM lists 4.5 mm and 10 mm plates. Weston’s 33-1301-W listing includes 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm plates, while the Pro Series evidence lists coarse and medium plates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Texture is a feeding issue, not a nutritional-adequacy solution. A finer grind may be easier for some cats to eat, while another cat may accept a coarser mixture. Change texture only within the recipe and feeding protocol you are using; do not use a different plate as a substitute for correct ingredient amounts or safe bone handling.

Look for reverse and overload protection

Reverse can help clear an obstruction, but it should be used only as the manual directs. Never reach into the feed tube to clear a jam while the grinder is connected to power. Unplug the appliance and follow the manufacturer’s clearing procedure.

The STX lists high, low, reverse, and stop/reset controls. LEM lists a built-in circuit breaker. Weston’s 33-1301-W lists reverse. These features can reduce the consequences of overloads, but they do not make an unsuitable bone or oversized piece safe to grind.

Account for cleaning, separation, and replacement parts

Raw-food preparation makes cleaning and separation more important than ordinary occasional meat grinding. Where practical, keep the grinder, cutting boards, containers, and utensils used for pet food separate from equipment used for human food. Choose a model for which you can identify replacement knives, plates, seals, and other wear parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After use, disconnect the grinder, disassemble it as permitted by the manual, wash and disinfect the relevant components and work surfaces using appropriate food-safety procedures, and dry everything thoroughly before storage. Product pages can describe stainless components and accessories, but they do not independently prove sanitation outcomes.

Verify warranty, model number, and parts support

Warranty and availability are volatile commercial details. LEM lists a five-year warranty and lifetime customer support; STX lists a three-year repair warranty; and the available Weston Pro Series information lists a five-year warranty. Confirm the terms for the exact model, seller, country, and intended use before purchase. In particular, check whether bone use, commercial use, or use outside the manual affects coverage.

For STX, verify the model suffix because the product page contains differing suffix references in different sections. For Weston, distinguish model 10-1201-W from model 33-1301-W; similar #12 branding does not mean identical specifications.

Raw-food safety is separate from grinder performance

FDA guidance identifies Salmonella and Listeria risks for both pets and people who handle raw pet food. The FDA’s stated way to avoid the risks associated with raw pet food is not to feed it. WSAVA likewise identifies bacterial contamination, parasites, nutritional imbalance, and bone-related injuries such as broken teeth, obstruction, and constipation. AVMA policy also warns that raw or undercooked animal-source protein can expose animals and people to risk, including through handling apparently healthy animals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are reasons to make an informed veterinary decision, not reasons to assume that a more powerful grinder solves the problem. A grinder changes the size and texture of ingredients; it does not sterilize them, remove parasites, or guarantee that the resulting bone fragments are safe.

A grinder cannot make a homemade diet complete and balanced

Equipment and nutrition should be treated as two separate decisions. In the United States, AAFCO explains that homemade pet foods are not subject to the same state or federal regulatory process as commercial pet foods and that formulating a complete diet is complex. Its consumer guidance notes that cat foods involve 44 nutritional parameters and that requirements vary by life stage.

FDA guidance warns that raw-meat diets can contain too little or too much calcium, phosphorus, essential fatty acids, trace minerals, vitamin A, and other nutrients. If a homemade diet is intended to be the cat’s sole source of nutrition, it needs substantiation against the relevant AAFCO cat nutrient profile or through an appropriate feeding protocol.

That normally means using a recipe formulated for the individual cat’s life stage, weighing ingredients accurately, adding the specified supplements in the specified amounts, and having the plan reviewed by a qualified professional when appropriate. A veterinary nutrition consultation or veterinarian-reviewed formulation can be more valuable than upgrading from one grinder to another when the goal is a sole-source homemade diet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not describe a recipe as complete and balanced merely because it contains muscle meat, organs, and ground bone. Likewise, do not assume that a commercial raw product is nutritionally complete: check its nutritional-adequacy statement and whether it is labeled for the cat’s life stage. AAFCO’s guidance is particularly important here because products labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding are not equivalent to a complete diet.

Which grinder should you buy?

Choose the STX if:

  • You specifically want a size #12 model whose manufacturer discusses B.A.R.F. preparation and certain soft bones.
  • You accept that the bone claim is not independently verified.
  • You will verify the exact model suffix, current manual, permitted bone types, accessories, seller, and warranty before using it.

Choose the LEM BigBite #12 if:

  • Your batches are boneless and you value documented stainless components, a large head opening, multiple plates, overload protection, and a five-year warranty.
  • You do not need the product page to establish bone-grinding capability.

Choose the Weston Pro Series #12 if:

  • You want a substantial stainless grinder for large boneless batches, with reverse, coarse and medium plates, and a stuffing kit.
  • You are comfortable verifying the five-year warranty with the exact seller and model.

Choose the Weston 33-1301-W if:

  • You want a simpler #12 machine for boneless meat and value two speeds, reverse, three plate sizes, and a stuffing kit.
  • You do not need the higher claimed throughput or stainless construction documented for the premium alternatives.

Bottom line

The STX Turboforce II 4000 Series Size #12 is the clearest exact-model choice for readers seeking a grinder marketed for raw-food and specified soft-bone preparation. LEM’s BigBite #12 and Weston’s Pro Series #12 are stronger documented choices for high-volume boneless work, while the Weston 33-1301-W is a simpler boneless alternative.

Whichever machine you choose, treat the manufacturer’s capacity as an estimate, the STX bone statement as a claim requiring strict manual compliance, and every grinder as a food-processing tool rather than a food-safety or nutrition solution. Safe handling, veterinary oversight, and a properly formulated feline diet matter more than motor wattage.
