For movie nights, keep direct light and reflections off the screen, then use dim, indirect room lighting if a fully dark room feels uncomfortable. A soft light aimed at the wall behind a TV can make the screen less isolated without shining into the room or appearing as bright points around the display. There is no single evidence-backed brightness target for every home or HDR setup; the right arrangement depends on daylight, reflections, the room and your comfort.
Start by controlling reflections
Before changing picture settings or adding lights, check what the screen reflects. With the TV powered off, look at the panel from your usual seat: it acts like a mirror and makes troublesome lamps and windows easier to spot. Move or shade one light source at a time, then check again. Direct light and reflections can compete with the image; reducing them at the source is often the most useful first adjustment. Sharp TV USA’s setup guide recommends this practical check.
Daytime viewing
If sunlight lands on the panel or causes glare, use blinds, curtains or shades to reduce it while keeping enough daylight for the room to remain usable. A shaded table or floor lamp can provide extra light from the side or behind the seating area; aim it away from the screen. Recheck the panel after each change, since the best placement depends on the room and viewing angle.
Nighttime viewing
Keep lamps out of the screen’s reflection path. If you need light to move safely around furniture or stairs, a small path light near the walking area can help without making the screen surroundings bright. This is a practical suggestion from Sharp’s guide, not a measured lighting standard.

Use indirect, diffuse light behind the TV
A bias-light strip mounted behind a flat-panel TV can wash the wall with a restrained, even glow. Aim the strip at the wall, leave space for the light to spread, and dim it until it is noticeable but not distracting. Avoid visible bright dots around the bezel and any placement that shines toward the viewer. A strongly colored wall will tint the reflected light.
Neutral white is a sensible choice when you want to judge image colors without a saturated backlight influencing your perception. That is practical viewing advice, not a requirement that every household use calibrated D65 lighting. MediaLight’s manufacturer guide discusses bias lighting, but neither it nor the TV-maker guide constitutes an independent comparison of particular brands or models. No specific strip has been established as a tested winner.

Check fit and power before installing a strip
- Confirm the strip fits the back of your screen and has enough clearance for the light to spread onto the wall.
- Consider wall color: a strongly colored surface can change the apparent hue of the reflected light.
- If you plan to power the strip from the TV’s USB port, check the TV manual and port behavior. Available current and whether the port switches off with the TV vary by model.
- Choose a dimmable option if you want to adjust the glow for different viewing conditions.
What the available light-level figures do—and do not—show
A 2015 SMPTE engineering report summarizes a week-long study sampling changing light every five minutes in 54 residential rooms across two parts of the country. In that study, daytime viewing occurred 82% of the time at 0–100 lux, with half of daytime viewing below 30 lux; nighttime viewing occurred 95% of the time at 0–50 lux. These are observations from the study, not recommended targets for every household. The report also notes that about 1% to 2% of ambient light incident on a display may be reflected by the screen. The report explains that darkness reduces reflections from screen glass, while a small addition of room light changes how display blacks are perceived even when the display’s own luminance is unchanged. It also describes bright rooms as capable of making an image appear dimmer, less saturated and lower in contrast, as well as more reflective. Those observations help explain why both a completely dark room and an overly bright one can be poor fits for a particular viewer; they do not establish a universal home brightness setting or prove that a given product will improve image quality or reduce eye strain.

Keep professional HDR guidance in context
The SMPTE report was approved in September 2015 and said the appropriate surround-light level for HDR mastering was then undefined and needed further testing across HDR-capable displays. That historical statement should not be read as a description of current standards. Dolby Professional Support’s available search-result excerpt describes a 5-nit ambient surround for reference viewing and matching bias-light luminance to a 5-nit perimeter patch when setting up bias light for Dolby Vision content creation. This is professional reference and content-creation guidance, not a blanket rule for watching movies at home; the full Dolby page was not available to verify further context. Dolby’s bias-light setup document is the cited reference.
MediaLight, a bias-lighting manufacturer, says its guide interprets SMPTE Recommended Practice as setting an intensity ceiling of 10% of display peak brightness and recommends 6500K and dimming. Those are the manufacturer’s claims, not independently verified instructions for every screen or home setup. MediaLight’s fundamentals guide provides its explanation.
