The Best Indoor House Plants: Easy Plants for Your Home

Choose an easy houseplant by matching it to your room’s light, your watering habits, and the space available. Start with snake plant, pothos, ZZ plant or peperomia—and verify plant safety if pets or children may chew it.

The easiest houseplant is the one that suits your room’s light and your watering habits. For a practical beginner shortlist, consider a snake plant if you prefer letting soil dry out, pothos for trailing growth, a ZZ plant for a lower-light spot, or peperomia for a compact plant. Low-light tolerant does not mean light-free: even forgiving plants need enough ambient light to grow.

Choose a plant for the light you actually have

Light is often the deciding factor in whether a houseplant thrives. Iowa State University Extension notes that light is one of the most limiting factors for indoor growing, and that most houseplants look their best in bright, indirect light. Low-light-tolerant plants can cope with less, but Texas A&M AgriLife emphasizes that they still need sufficient ambient light to maintain healthy growth.

Assess the spot where the plant will sit, not just the direction a nearby window faces. Curtains, roof overhangs, nearby buildings, and the plant’s distance from the window all affect usable light. If the room is too dim, a plant grow light can help; ordinary incandescent or fluorescent bulbs alone are not a reliable substitute for a plant light, according to UF/IFAS.

Easy houseplants to match your space and habits

Snake plant: for people who let soil dry

Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, also called sansevieria) tolerates a range from bright to low light and can go through long dry periods. Let the soil dry before watering, and use a pot that drains. It is a good fit if you tend to forget watering rather than water frequently. See UNH Extension’s easy-houseplant guidance and Iowa State Extension’s care notes.

Pothos: for trailing or climbing growth

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is a forgiving trailing plant that also can be trained to climb. It suits low-to-moderate light; let the soil dry moderately between waterings. Prune it to manage its length, and use stem cuttings to propagate it. It needs room for its vines, so consider where they can hang or trail without obstructing a walkway. Care details are available from Iowa State Extension and UNH Extension.

ZZ plant: for a lower-light location

ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an easy-care option for lower-light conditions. Wait for its soil to dry before watering. It is not a pet- or child-safe recommendation: Illinois Extension warns that all parts are poisonous. Read Illinois Extension’s low-light plant guidance and University of Maryland Extension’s houseplant selection advice.

Peperomia: for a compact beginner plant

Peperomia (Peperomia obtusifolia) is a compact foliage plant suited to average home conditions. Let the soil dry moderately between waterings. Avoid keeping its soil wet: Iowa State Extension cautions that overwatering can cause rot. It can work well where a trailing vine would take up too much space. See Iowa State Extension and University of Maryland Extension.

Water by checking the soil, not by the calendar

Watering needs change with light, temperature, humidity, soil, container, plant size, species, and season, so a fixed weekly schedule can leave a plant either too dry or too wet. For most plants, UF/IFAS recommends letting the upper inch of soil dry between waterings, then watering thoroughly until water exits the pot. Follow plant-specific guidance when it calls for a different drying level.

  1. Check the soil before watering. For most plants, wait until the upper inch has dried; for snake and ZZ plants, allow the soil to dry as described above.
  2. Water thoroughly so excess can flow through the drainage holes.
  3. Empty the saucer or outer pot after drainage. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water.

These practices draw on UF/IFAS care guidance, Iowa State Extension, and UNH Extension.

Set up the pot and growing mix for success

Choose a container with drainage holes and a soilless potting mix, as recommended by UNH Extension. A decorative cachepot can conceal a nursery pot, but remove the inner pot to drain after watering rather than letting water collect at the bottom. If your chosen spot does not provide enough light, consider a plant grow light rather than relying on ordinary household bulbs alone.

Check pet and child safety before bringing a plant home

Do not assume that a plant is safe to chew because it is common or easy to grow. UNH Extension recommends checking the ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants List before bringing a plant into a home with pets. Verify the exact plant species you intend to buy; the plants discussed here should not be treated as a pet-safe shortlist. Keep plants out of reach of young children as appropriate, and contact a veterinarian or poison-control service if an animal eats a plant and you are concerned.
