The NAIC Home Inventory App is a sensible free starting point for U.S. homeowners and renters who want to document belongings by room or category, add photos, scan barcodes and export an inventory. It is not a guarantee of coverage or claim payment. Choose any app by how well it captures evidence, how reliably you can recover a copy, and how it handles your data.

What makes a home inventory app useful for insurance?

An inventory helps you remember and identify belongings after a loss. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says, “An accurate home inventory gives your insurance carrier the information they need to help settle your claims.” An inventory does not replace your policy, establish what is covered, or determine the amount an insurer will pay.

Look for a tool that lets you record items clearly and preserve the information somewhere you can reach if your home or phone is damaged. Compare the following before committing:

  • Evidence capture: Photos, item descriptions, model and serial numbers, receipts, and purchase details.
  • Organization and speed: Room or category structure, barcode scanning, batch or video capture, and the amount of manual entry required.
  • Export and recovery: Whether you can export both records and images, how backups work, and whether you can access a copy if your device or home is lost.
  • Privacy and control: Where data is stored, who can access it, and whether the service uses cloud processing. An inventory can reveal what you own, so consider its sensitivity.
  • Price and lock-in: Whether the app is free, charges a recurring subscription or one-time fee, and what happens to your records if you stop paying.
  • Fit: Supported country and currency, operating systems, number of properties, and whether the product is designed for household use or professional restoration work.

NAIC Home Inventory App: a free baseline

The NAIC describes its app as a way to record belongings with photos and barcode scanning, organize them by room or category, and export the inventory. It also includes disaster-preparedness and claim-filing guidance. Wisconsin’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance likewise lists these functions and identifies the app as free. The Google Play listing describes photo capture, barcode scanning, room and category organization, and export; it was updated August 26, 2026.

I'm a Homeowner, Now What? (A Logbook for Everything in Your Home)
  • Concise fill-in lists and charts enable you to compile the essential information you need to stay organized as you get ready for your home.
  • Gather all the details here -- from your real estate agent to your attorney, from utilities and community info to plumbers, electricians, remodeling plans, and beyond.
  • Includes graph paper and forms for planning room details, as well as checklists for routine maintenance.
  • Convenient inside back cover pocket for business cards, receipts, etc.
  • Elastic band closure attached to the back cover keeps your place or keeps your planner closed.

That makes the NAIC app a practical starting point, not a universal winner. Another tool may suit you better if it offers a particular export method, privacy control, platform, or household-management feature you need. Check current availability and app-store details before installing. Google Play’s data-safety section reflects developer-provided disclosures; it is not an independent privacy audit.

How to compare alternatives without relying on a ranking

A 2026 comparison by WHIG names WHIG, Bevel, HomeZada, Sortly, and Encircle. Because WHIG sells one of the products it discusses, treat its product descriptions, prices, security claims, and judgments as vendor statements—not as an independent ranking. Verify details in each provider’s current documentation and app-store listing.

App or category What the cited comparison says How to use that information
WHIG The vendor-authored comparison quotes a $38 one-time price as of June 29, 2026. Confirm current price, export and backup options, privacy terms, and supported platforms with the provider.
Bevel The comparison quotes plans at $60/year and $250/year as of June 29, 2026. Check which features each current plan includes and what happens to records if you cancel.
HomeZada The comparison describes it as a subscription; it does not establish a price in the cited material. Check current plan details and whether the features match your household’s needs.
Sortly The comparison describes it as a subscription; it does not establish a price in the cited material. Check current plan details, household suitability, and export and recovery behavior.
Encircle Named in the comparison; the cited material does not establish a price here. Check the provider’s current description to determine whether its intended use fits a household inventory.

Prices above are vendor-published figures quoted by WHIG on June 29, 2026, not independently verified offers; they may have changed. The comparison does not establish that any one of these apps is best for every U.S. homeowner or renter.

Build an inventory that can help after a loss

Choose an app—or another record method—you can keep current. Then document the home systematically. NAIC recommends walking through each room, listing belongings, and taking photos or video. Pay particular attention to valuable or distinctive property such as antiques, electronics, jewelry, collectibles, and firearms.

  1. Work room by room. Take a wide view of each space, then add closer photos and descriptions for important or hard-to-identify items.
  2. Record useful identifiers. Add model and serial numbers when available, and save receipts and purchase details. California’s Department of Insurance notes that photographs can help identify items that are difficult to describe or lack a receipt; label photos with dates and relevant details.
  3. Export and test a separate copy. Save the inventory and supporting documents somewhere outside the home, such as online storage, a workplace, a safe-deposit box, or a relative’s home. South Dakota’s Division of Insurance also suggests keeping a copy on a computer or in a fire-resistant box and sharing one. Open the saved copy to confirm it works. An app installed on one phone is not, by itself, a backup.
  4. Update the record. NAIC advises reviewing it annually and adding new purchases; California recommends at least yearly updates and notifying the insurer about new purchases.
  5. Ask about coverage separately. Know your deductible and contact your insurer or agent with policy questions. Ask whether valuable items need separate attention; the inventory itself does not answer coverage questions.
