The best plants for a city garden depend on how much direct sun your spot gets, how much room a pot can give their roots, and how often you can water. Start with leafy greens and herbs if light or space is limited; choose fruiting crops such as tomatoes and peppers when you have stronger sun and larger containers. A city garden might be a balcony, patio, windowsill, rooftop, or compact yard, so use the recommendations below as starting points and adjust for your local growing season.

What vegetables can you grow in pots on a balcony?

Many vegetables grow in containers when the pot suits the mature plant. Salad greens, lettuce, chard, beans, carrots, beets, radishes, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, and squash are among the crops listed by University of Maryland Extension. In a tight space, look for compact or dwarf varieties and consider whether you can support climbing plants vertically with a trellis.

Choose by harvest style as well as plant size: greens offer leaves to pick, while tomatoes, peppers, and other fruiting crops need enough room and light to set a crop. For a small or partly shaded spot, leafy crops are often a more practical first choice than a large fruiting plant.

How much sun do container vegetables need?

Measure the hours of direct sunlight the growing area receives, rather than judging it by how bright it feels. Fruiting crops generally need more sun than leafy greens and herbs. University guidance commonly uses about six or more hours of sun as a starting point for many vegetables, but the requirement varies by crop and growing conditions. UNH Extension notes that leafy vegetables and herbs tolerate less light than fruiting crops.

If the site gets partial sun

Try lettuce, spinach, chard, and herbs such as parsley, cilantro, or mint. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources says leafy crops including lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, basil, and cilantro may tolerate partial shade and can grow with about three hours of sun; treat that as source-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every crop, climate, or season. Less light can affect how well plants grow, so observe the results in your own spot.

If the site gets stronger sun

Consider peppers, compact tomatoes, bush beans, cucumbers, carrots, beets, and radishes. Fruiting plants are more likely to suit a sunny balcony, patio, or yard, provided their pots are large enough and you can keep up with watering.

Which herbs grow well in small spaces?

Basil, cilantro, thyme, mint, oregano, tarragon, and marjoram are among the smaller herbs that Maryland Extension says can grow in 2- to 5-gallon pots. Larger herbs—including rosemary, bay, sage, parsley, lavender, dill, and fennel—may need pots of 5 gallons or more. These are planning recommendations, not universal guarantees.

Group herbs by how much moisture they prefer. Basil, mint, parsley, and cilantro prefer more consistent moisture; rosemary, thyme, oregano, and lavender prefer drier conditions. Keeping herbs with similar water needs together makes it easier to care for them appropriately. Iowa State Extension also recommends well-drained growing medium and grouping herbs with comparable water requirements.

What size pot does each vegetable need?

Use these minimum container volumes from Maryland Extension as a planning guide. The amount a plant needs can vary with variety and growing conditions, and a compact variety may fit a smaller pot than a full-sized one.

Crop Minimum container volume in Maryland Extension guidance
Leaf lettuce ½ gallon
Bush beans 2 gallons
Carrots 2 gallons
Cherry tomatoes 2 gallons
Peppers 5 gallons
Standard tomatoes 5 gallons
Summer squash 10 gallons

Maryland Extension’s container vegetable guide provides these minimums. A pot that is too small restricts root space and dries out faster, which can limit the harvest. Check that any container also has drainage holes.

What growing medium and containers should you use?

Use a quality growing medium made for containers, not garden soil alone. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources explains that garden soil is too heavy for containers and does not have the appropriate container properties. Its handout describes a possible home mix of equal parts compost, perlite or vermiculite, and coconut coir or peat moss. Follow product directions and choose materials that are available and suitable where you live.

Before planting, check that the pot has drainage and enough volume for the crop. Plan for mature height and spread as well as root space: crowding can make plants compete for light, moisture, nutrients, and room, and can increase the risk of leaf infections. A trellis can make a vining crop easier to manage if your space allows one.

How often should you water a city container garden?

There is no dependable universal daily schedule. A container’s drying rate changes with pot size, sun, wind, weather, and plant maturity. Check the growing medium regularly and water when it needs it, rather than following a fixed calendar. Maryland Extension identifies improper watering as a major limitation for container vegetables and recommends watering at the base of plants to help reduce disease. See its container vegetable maintenance guidance.

How to choose your first plants

  1. Measure direct sun. Use the light at the actual planting spot to decide whether to start with shade-tolerant leafy crops or try sun-loving fruiting crops.
  2. Match the pot to the mature plant. Use crop-specific volume guidance as a minimum starting point; favor compact varieties when space is limited.
  3. Be realistic about watering. If you cannot check containers often, begin with fewer pots and avoid grouping herbs with very different moisture preferences.
  4. Leave room for growth. Space plants so they are not crowded, and use vertical support for vining crops where practical.
  5. Check local timing and rules. Planting dates depend on location and season; consult a local extension calendar. If you are gardening on a balcony or rooftop, check applicable building or property rules before adding containers or supports.

The cited extension guidance is from U.S. institutions; gardeners elsewhere should adapt pot choices and crop timing to local climate and conditions.
