Which type of freezer packaging should you choose?

Match the package to the food
- Soup, sauce, or another liquid: use a freezer-rated rigid container and leave room for expansion.
- Irregular-shaped food or a low-liquid dry pack: use a freezer-weight bag or suitable wrap, sealed to limit air exposure.

- Seal and moisture protection: prefer a closure or wrap that limits air exposure. A freezer package should be durable, leakproof, easy to seal, and resistant to becoming brittle or cracking, according to the National Center for Home Food Preservation.
- Capacity: allow expansion space in liquid packs. For fruit and vegetables, avoid containers over one-half gallon if satisfactory freezing quality is the goal.
- Handling and storage: consider weight, breakability, shape, stackability, ease of marking, and how readily the container can be cleaned. The National Center for Home Food Preservation includes durability and ease of marking among useful packaging qualities.

USDA FSIS says food kept constantly at 0°F remains safe indefinitely, though quality can decline during long freezer storage. Freezer burn is a quality problem, not a food-safety problem: FSIS explains that it “does not make food unsafe, merely dry in spots.” Limiting air exposure helps protect quality, but a container cannot prevent all quality loss during prolonged storage.
