To improve drainage in your yard, first identify where the water comes from and where it can safely go. Redirect roof runoff with downspout extensions, shape surface flow with grading or a swale, or use a French drain, dry well, or rain garden when site conditions suit them. These are different tools—not interchangeable fixes—and none should send water toward a neighbor or leave it beside a foundation.
Diagnose the drainage problem before choosing a solution
Watch the yard during and after rain. Note where water first appears, which direction it moves, how long it remains, and whether it is tied to roof runoff, flow from higher ground, or a low area that drains slowly. Also consider the soil, available space, slope, and likely runoff volume. A useful fix needs both a way to manage the water and a suitable destination or overflow route.

- Water below a roof edge or beside a downspout: roof runoff may be overwhelming a small area or landing on a hard surface.
- A moving sheet or stream of water: surface flow may need a safe route across the property.
- Persistent ponding in a low spot: the area may collect runoff, have poor infiltration, or both. A feature that depends on infiltration may not work there without careful assessment.
There is no single slope, trench depth, or sizing rule that fits every yard. Rainfall, soil, site layout, and local requirements all matter.

1. Extend or redirect downspouts
Start here when roof runoff is a significant source of water. Redirecting a downspout can move roof water away from a driveway or other hard surface toward a suitable pervious area, such as a yard, garden, rain garden, or conservation landscape. A rain barrel is another option for capturing roof runoff. The University of Maryland Extension discusses these destinations in its guidance on managing rainwater from downspouts.

- Durable and ADA Compliant: 59 GPM per foot flow rate, 19.32 sq. in. open surface area per linear foot; Class B load rated for light traffic applications up to 175 psi; ADA compliant for safe pedestrian use
Choose a destination that can accept the water, and plan where overflow will go during heavy rain. An extension can address a downspout’s discharge point; it will not correct unrelated surface-flow or soil-infiltration problems.
2. Regrade to restore positive surface drainage
Where water flows toward a building or settles alongside it, reshaping the ground may help direct surface water toward a safe, lawful receiving area. Grading is site-specific: changing the slope can shift the problem elsewhere, so plan the route before moving soil.

- Low-profile Drain System: Dimensions of each channel: 5.9" W x 5.1" H x 39.4" L. Commercial water drainage systems allow safe and efficient drainage for grassed areas, gardens, farms, patio areas, pool sides, office buildings, driveways, or factory interiors. The anti-flotation design prevents floating and doesn’t require staking when setting in concrete.
- Easy & Quick Installation: You can connect these trench drains together for extra length. The interlocking design connects the drains tightly with no potential leak of water. Detachable grate can be manually installed and detached easily, needs no screws or bolts. It also provides a convenient way to clean the drain if it is bunged up.
- Various Outlet Connections: Each trench drain provides a bottom outlet with multiple sizes(3.1 inch/ 3.6 inch), and a side outlet(2.2 inch). You can choose the size you need. No outlet connector is required because it is already built-in; thus, the pipe can be connected directly. Kind Reminder: The 3.1" outlet fits standard 3" pipes. For 3.6" and 2.2" outlets, choose pipes accordingly
- Durability & High Performance: Sturdy HDPE plastic creates a hard and durable structure. The load capacity is A125. The HDPE plastic provides a smooth interior surface, which allows faster water intake.
- Complete Packing List: This trench drain kit comes with six drains with built-in bottom outlets, six plastic grates, and six end caps. Plus, the outlet connector is already built-in. All the accessories that you may need are included.
Local rules may apply. For example, WSU Clark County Extension notes that moving soil for drainage features may require a grading permit above a local threshold. That is Clark County guidance, not a rule for every jurisdiction; check with your local authority before starting work.
3. Create a shallow swale or dry creek
A swale is a broad, shallow channel that carries surface water to a suitable outlet. Michigan State University Extension describes it this way: “A swale is a wide, shallow ditch in which water can flow to a suitable outlet.” Vegetation or appropriately sized stone can protect the channel from erosion; a stone-lined swale is sometimes called a dry creek bed.

Withstands light vehicle traffic, suitable for driveways/garages, and boasts a lifespan far exceeding ordinary carbon steel models.
- 2. Narrow, shallow design + grating protection for clog-free drainage: 2-inch narrow width + 1.2-inch shallow trough requires no deep excavation for installation. Grating blocks leaves and debris without slowing drainage, preventing pool deck puddling and yard waterlogging.
- 3. Integrated connectors for flexible extension: Includes specialized coupling connectors. Individual 39.4-inch sections freely interlock, adapting to patios, driveways, and other areas while boosting installation efficiency by 50%.
- 4. Universal ground compatibility: Suitable for embedding in concrete, brick, stone, or wooden decks. Perfectly meets drainage needs for pools, gardens, garages, walkways, and other outdoor areas.
- 5. Tool-free maintenance, hassle-free cleaning: Snap-on grates can be removed by hand. Monthly rinsing keeps them clear, solving the issues of difficult disassembly and dirt buildup common in traditional drainage channels. Ideal for busy households.
Use a swale when water needs a visible surface route, not as a substitute for deciding where it will end up. Its path and outlet must be suitable for your property and local rules.
4. Install a French drain
A French drain is an underground system that collects and conveys water. Michigan State University Extension describes it as perforated pipe surrounded by gravel and sturdy landscape fabric. It is not simply any trench filled with rock: the system needs to collect water effectively and carry it to an appropriate outlet.

- ✅ Modular & Easy to Install Each 39.4-inch section connects seamlessly and fits standard 3-inch drain pipes. Expand the Channel Drain kit outdoor as needed for any outdoor layout—whether a small patio or a long driveway.
Possible receiving locations depend on the site; PNNL guidance discusses discharge to an appropriate dry well, pond, or lower area. Whatever the destination, a French drain needs a defined, safe outlet. Without one, the pipe and gravel do not solve the underlying problem. A French drain may help where quicker drainage is needed, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every saturated-soil condition.

A dry well receives water and allows it to soak into the surrounding soil. It is suitable only where site conditions support infiltration and the well has a plan for overflow. WSU Clark County Extension says its dry well should be designed to drain completely into the soil within 48 hours after the rain event. That is a performance statement in this local guidance—not a universal legal requirement or a guarantee that a dry well will work in other soil or site conditions.

6. Build a rain garden or planted infiltration area
A rain garden or planted basin can detain and filter runoff while allowing it to infiltrate where conditions permit. UC ANR describes small berms, swales, and basins as ways to direct, detain, and filter rainwater. The receiving area still needs enough infiltration capacity and a planned overflow route; a rain garden is not a place to send unlimited water.
Ask Extension guidance cautions that some situations should first be treated as drainage and grading problems. If a proposed rain garden would leave water persistently ponded or close to a foundation, reassess the location and water route before building it.

| Option | Best fit | How it handles water | Key condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downspout redirection | Roof runoff landing near a hard surface or concentrated in one area | Moves runoff to a suitable pervious destination or rain barrel | Destination and overflow route can accept the water |
| Regrading | Surface water flowing toward or collecting beside a building | Changes surface slope to guide water elsewhere | A safe, lawful route exists and the change will not transfer the problem |
| Swale or dry creek | Surface flow that needs a visible channel | Conveys water along the ground to an outlet | There is a suitable route and outlet |
| French drain | Water that needs to be collected and conveyed underground | Perforated pipe and gravel carry collected water to an outlet | A suitable discharge point is available |
| Dry well | Runoff that can be stored temporarily and infiltrated onsite | Receives water and releases it into surrounding soil | Soil infiltration and overflow arrangements are suitable |
| Rain garden or planted infiltration area | Runoff that can be directed to a planted area with suitable infiltration | Detains, filters, and infiltrates water onsite | Location, infiltration, and overflow are appropriate |
Check the outlet, property impacts, and local rules
Before digging, confirm where discharged water is allowed to go. Property boundaries, easements, stormwater rules, and grading permits vary by location. Iowa State University Extension puts the neighbor issue plainly: “Don’t just redirect the water to someone else’s yard, however.” Do not solve ponding on your property by sending runoff onto a neighboring one.
If water reaches the foundation, the yard stays saturated, or you cannot identify a safe route or suitable outlet, seek an evaluation from a qualified drainage or landscape professional. Ask Extension guidance supports professional evaluation for difficult drainage and grading cases; licensing requirements and local rules should be checked where you live.
