The Best Cheap Air Conditioners of 2025: How to Choose the Right Window Unit

Window ACs are a low-cost place to start, but no verified cheapest 2025 model is established. Match capacity to room size, then compare efficiency, window fit, and running costs.

For an inexpensive way to cool one room, a window air conditioner is the strongest category to start with: Consumer Reports describes window units as one of the least expensive room-cooling options. But the available evidence does not establish a reliable list of the cheapest 2025 models or their prices. The better way to shop is to match capacity to your room, check efficiency and window fit, and compare current local prices. This guide uses buying guidance current through October 2026; it does not present current models or prices as 2025 bargains.

Why window air conditioners are the budget starting point

A window unit is often a practical choice when you need to cool a single room rather than a whole home. Consumer Reports identifies window air conditioners as one of the least expensive ways to cool a room. That supports choosing the category as a starting point, not declaring a particular model the cheapest or best: no model-specific test results or dated 2025 prices are established here.

Portable air conditioners may make sense when a window cannot accommodate a unit, but the available evidence does not identify a low-cost portable winner. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program room-air-conditioner efficiency guidance also excludes portable units, so its comparison should not be applied to them.

Choose capacity for the room, not the biggest number

Cooling capacity is measured in Btu per hour (Btu/h). Use the room’s floor area as the starting point, then account for sun, shade, occupants, and cooking. Consumer Reports’ February 10, 2026 buying guide gives a general range of 5,000–6,500 Btu/h for a 100–250-square-foot small room. ENERGY STAR’s current room-air-conditioner chart breaks that range into more specific bands:

Room area Starting capacity
100–150 square feet 5,000 Btu/h
150–250 square feet 6,000 Btu/h

ENERGY STAR also recommends adjusting the chart’s result for conditions: reduce capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room, increase it by 10% for a very sunny room, add 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two, and add 4,000 Btu/h for a kitchen. These adjustments are guidance for sizing, not a substitute for checking a specific unit’s capacity and installation requirements.

Buying an oversized unit is not a safe shortcut. ENERGY STAR warns that it can cost more and waste energy; because it may cool the room before removing enough humidity, the room can feel clammy. Start with the room’s area and conditions rather than choosing the largest unit your budget allows. See ENERGY STAR room air conditioner buying guidance.

Compare efficiency as well as the sticker price

A low purchase price does not show what a unit will cost to run. ENERGY STAR says its certified room air conditioners are at least 19–36% more efficient than federal minimum standards. The percentage is a comparison with those standards, not a guaranteed reduction in an individual household’s bill; actual energy use depends on the unit, how it is used, and local electricity rates. Check the model’s ENERGY STAR status and its Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER), then consider expected use and your local rate alongside the upfront price. Check ENERGY STAR room air conditioner criteria.

ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Most Efficient recognition applied during calendar year 2025 and required both ENERGY STAR certification and CEER thresholds specific to the product class. That recognition is a dated efficiency distinction, not proof that a product was the cheapest or best-value air conditioner of 2025. Review ENERGY STAR Most Efficient criteria.

The Department of Energy’s FEMP guidance illustrates why efficiency can matter over time: it estimates $167 in lifetime savings for a required ENERGY STAR-qualified room unit compared with a less-efficient example model. That illustrative calculation assumes a 12,000 Btu/h unit used 750 hours per year, electricity at 11.1¢/kWh (the federal-facility average as of July 2024), and nine years of use. It is not a prediction of household savings; your usage, rates, and unit differ. Read the FEMP room air conditioner guidance and assumptions.

Check the window, installation style, and useful features

Before comparing prices, make sure the unit’s installation method suits your window. Standard window units require a compatible opening and secure installation. ENERGY STAR notes that some U-shaped designs can leave the window operable and place the compressor outside. If quiet operation and efficient output matter, look for a variable-speed compressor: it can adjust output rather than simply running at one fixed level, and ENERGY STAR identifies this as a way to support efficient, quieter cooling.

Installation quality affects comfort and energy loss. ENERGY STAR states, “An improperly installed room air conditioner leaks as much air as a 6-square-inch hole, increasing energy costs and making your home less comfortable.” Follow the unit’s instructions and use the supplied insulation materials to seal gaps. Also compare filter access, controls, warranty terms, and any included sealing materials; these affect day-to-day ownership but are not established as advantages of any specific model here.

A practical checklist for finding a genuinely good cheap unit

  1. Measure the room. Use floor area and ENERGY STAR’s capacity chart as a starting point, then apply the listed adjustments for shade, sun, extra occupants, or a kitchen.
  2. Confirm the window fit. Check the model’s required window dimensions and installation style against your actual opening before buying.
  3. Compare efficiency. Verify ENERGY STAR certification and compare CEER for the models you are considering.
  4. Consider operating cost and comfort. Use your expected hours of use and local electricity rate; compare noise-related features such as variable-speed operation.
  5. Check the ownership details. Review warranty, filter access, controls, and supplied insulation materials, as well as the current price from a seller serving your area.

Consumer Reports says its predicted reliability and satisfaction ratings draw on member feedback for more than 4,000 window air conditioners bought new between 2014 and 2024. That is a substantial historical sample, but it does not establish a 2025 price or identify a current cheapest model. Its buying guide was updated February 10, 2026, so use its reliability context as historical evidence rather than a ranking of 2025 bargains. Read the Consumer Reports air conditioner buying guide.
