- Match the sowing method: check whether the variety is intended for indoor starting, direct sowing, or either method.
- Check the space and season: use the product details for growing location, zone, and days to maturity, then compare them with your available space and local frost dates.
- Look for a relevant trait: if you need disease resistance or want to attract pollinators, check whether the specific variety description lists that trait.
Burpee’s collection filters make these dimensions visible, but a catalog listing is not proof that a variety will perform well in every garden. Review the product description and packet directions before buying.

Burpee’s indoor-sow collection says most of its listed crops should be started 6–10 weeks before the local last frost. Separately, Burpee’s seed-starting support article advises checking the packet first and says many crops should be started 6–8 weeks before the last frost when the packet calls for it.
