The Best Broadcast Spreaders for Feeding Your Lawn

A broadcast spreader can cover open lawn quickly, but model-specific calibration, pattern consistency, and control at borders matter more than a universal dial setting.

The right broadcast spreader depends on your lawn’s size and layout—not a universal “best” setting or a claimed accuracy ranking. For open lawns, a rotary spreader’s wide throw can cover ground quickly; around paths, beds, and property edges, side-spread control and careful calibration matter just as much. The Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX and EarthWay 2050P are two documented examples, but the available information does not establish a controlled head-to-head winner.

How to choose a broadcast spreader

Compare a spreader against the job it needs to do. Capacity, edge control, a consistent pattern, handling, and maintenance are more useful criteria than unsupported claims that one model is the most accurate or durable.

  • Capacity: Choose a hopper size suited to your lawn and the amount of fertilizer you will apply. A larger capacity may mean fewer refills, but the sources do not provide comparable capacity data for both examples below.
  • Edge control: A broadcast spreader throws granules outward from a spinning disc. A side deflector can help keep product off pavement and garden beds; University of Maryland Extension notes that some models use adjustable or removable shields.
  • Pattern and calibration: Look for model-specific instructions and a practical way to establish the effective swath width. The dial setting alone does not establish an even pattern or correct application rate.
  • Handling and upkeep: Consider whether the spreader is stable and manageable to push on your terrain, and whether you can clean and store it as its manual directs. The cited sources do not provide independent comparative handling or durability tests.

Two models to consider

These are examples with source-backed features, not winners from a comparative test. Their published specifications and support come from their manufacturers.

Model Documented details What to check before buying
Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX Scotts identifies it as a broadcast spreader and provides model-specific calibration guidance. The company describes EdgeGuard as a deflector feature. Scotts calibration guide; Scotts spreader support guide. Confirm that the model’s instructions and capacity suit your lawn and the fertilizer you plan to apply. The manufacturer’s feature descriptions are not independent performance testing.
EarthWay 2050P EarthWay’s manual describes an 80 lb broadcast spreader with side-spread control. It cautions that differences in material and operating conditions mean listed settings cannot guarantee uniform coverage. EarthWay 2050P manual, revised February 2024. Check the manual for operating and calibration directions for your actual product and conditions; do not treat a printed setting as a guarantee of even application.

Broadcast or drop spreader?

A broadcast, or rotary, spreader uses a spinning disc to throw granules over a wider area. That makes it useful for covering open lawn, but the spread pattern requires overlapping passes and attention at borders. A drop spreader deposits product directly beneath its hopper, giving a more confined application path. University of Maryland Extension describes the difference in its established-lawn guidance. Choose based on the shape of the area and how much control you need near edges.

Why spreader settings are not universal

A dial number is specific to a spreader and product combination, not a universal rate. Product properties, the spreader model, operator, and walking speed can all affect output. Penn State Extension, in its guidance updated April 30, 2025, and UF/IFAS Extension both recommend calibration rather than relying on a printed setting alone: Penn State’s spreader calibration guide and UF/IFAS’s calibration instructions.

Calibrate before spreading fertilizer

  1. Read the fertilizer label. Use it for the application rate, any spreader type or model settings, application conditions, and watering directions. Do not copy a dial number from another product or spreader.
  2. Measure the lawn and calculate the amount. Determine the area to be treated and the product quantity called for by the label and applicable lawn recommendation. Keep the gate closed while filling, and follow the spreader manual’s directions for starting and opening the flow gate.
  3. Test the rate with your actual setup. Scotts describes a general method: begin with the label recommendation, spread over a measured area, weigh the material remaining, then adjust and repeat if output differs. Penn State explains why a setting is only a starting point: operator speed, fertilizer, and individual spreaders vary.
  4. Check the pattern as well as the amount. UF/IFAS describes placing shallow catch pans across the travel path to compare granules collected across the swath and establish an effective swath width. Use that width to space passes. Separately, apply over a known area, weigh the material used, and adjust the setting as needed to reach the intended rate.

Apply evenly and protect borders

To reduce striping, University of Maryland Extension recommends splitting the total fertilizer into two equal portions and applying at half rate per pass in two perpendicular directions. Use any side deflector as directed by the spreader manual, and sweep granules from hard surfaces back onto the lawn. The same Extension guidance advises against applying before forecast heavy rain or on frozen ground, and recommends respecting setbacks around water sources. Check the product label and local rules for requirements that apply where you live.
