The right bath mat is a performance decision, not just a decorating choice. Stone and diatomaceous-earth mats are the best bets for rapid drying; chenille wins for softness; cotton is easiest to live with and launder; memory foam provides the most cushioning; and wood or hinoki suits a low-laundry, design-focused bathroom.
Based on recent testing from Shop TODAY, Apartment Therapy, and Architectural Digest, the Sutera Stone Bath Mat is the strongest choice for minimizing dampness, the Gorilla Grip Chenille Bath Rug is a practical budget fabric option, and the L.L.Bean Classic Cotton Bath Mat is the best heavy-duty cotton pick. Measure your usable floor area before buying—especially in a small bathroom—and match the care instructions to the backing material.
The best bath mat depends on what your bathroom needs most. Choose a stone or diatomaceous-earth mat if your priority is rapid drying and minimal leftover moisture. Choose chenille for a soft, fuzzy landing spot, cotton for easy laundering and familiar towel-like comfort, memory foam for cushioning, or wood for a low-laundry design statement.

Small bathrooms require more care: measure the usable floor area first, because a compact mat can be too small to provide useful coverage while a plush 20-by-34-inch mat may crowd the room.

Best for fastest drying: Sutera Stone Bath Mat
Stone mats are the clearest choice for a bathroom where the main annoyance is stepping onto a damp textile day after day. In Shop TODAY’s approximately two-week evaluation of nine mats, the Sutera Stone Bath Mat earned a 4.33/5 overall rating and 5/5 scores for absorbency and drying time. After a tester stepped onto it with nearly soaking-wet feet, footprints were nearly gone after 20 minutes.
The Sutera Stone Bath Mat is therefore a strong fit for a high-traffic bathroom, a poorly ventilated room, or a household that does not want to rotate and wash a fabric mat frequently. Its included rubber pad is intended to reduce sliding, but no mat is completely slip-proof. The result depends on the floor surface, whether the pad lies flat, and whether the mat is positioned correctly.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe tradeoff is fundamental: this is a hard surface, not a soft bath rug. It also takes more thought to clean and store than a mat that can be folded into a laundry basket. Stone or diatomaceous-earth mats should be treated as fast-drying surfaces, not as sterilizing or inherently mold-proof products. Follow the specific care instructions; surface maintenance may involve brushing, rinsing, or light sanding rather than ordinary machine washing.
Best design-forward stone alternative: Dorai Bath Stone Mat
The Dorai Bath Stone Mat is a better match for readers who want the low-profile appearance of a stone mat but are paying close attention to bathroom design. Architectural Digest lists compressed diatomaceous earth and recycled paper in its construction and includes a nonslip rug pad. Its tester reported absorption in less than two minutes.
The Dorai Bath Stone Mat should not be described as a soft textile alternative. It is firm underfoot and can feel less welcoming than cotton or chenille, particularly in a bathroom where comfort is a priority. The advantage is the reduced residual dampness. For surface marks, Architectural Digest lists light sanding with sandpaper as part of its care approach.
Best soft chenille mat: H.Versailtex Non-Slip Chenille Striped Bath Mat
Chenille is the material to choose when the first sensation underfoot matters more than the absolute fastest drying time. The H.Versailtex Non-Slip Chenille Striped Bath Mat received a 4.3/5 overall rating from Shop TODAY, including 4/5 for absorbency and drying time and 5/5 for cleaning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The H.Versailtex chenille bath mat provides the fuzzy, cushioned-feeling surface many people expect from a bath rug while remaining machine washable. It is a practical choice for a primary bathroom where softness and appearance need to coexist with routine laundering.
There are two maintenance qualifications. Rubber-backed versions should be air-dried instead of exposed to aggressive dryer heat, and the chenille pile can mat over time. Shake out debris, wash according to the care label, and avoid assuming that a rubber backing can tolerate the same high heat as a plain cotton towel.
Best inexpensive everyday fabric mat: Gorilla Grip Chenille Bath Rug
The Gorilla Grip Chenille Bath Rug earned a 4/5 overall rating in Shop TODAY’s testing. It was recognized for absorbency, relatively quick drying, a nonslip backing, and machine washing. It is not the choice for someone seeking the deepest or most luxurious pile, but it covers the everyday requirements without unnecessary complexity.

- PATENTED DESIGN WITH POWERFUL SUCTION GRIP: a bath mat designed to securely stay in place; this patented bathtub mat features hundreds of suction cups that effectively help secure the tub mat to your shower floor
- EASY WATER DRAINAGE: hundreds of drainage holes allow for water to easily flow under the bath tub mat and toward the drain, helping to prevent water from sitting stagnant beneath the shower mat in your tub or shower
- TEXTURED AND BPA-FREE: the bath mat is constructed from BPA-free materials; it features a unique hexagon design with a pebble-textured topside that is soft on feet; this bathroom mat is soft, flexible, and the perfect home bathroom essential for the whole family
- OVERSIZED AND MACHINE WASHABLE: the shower floor mat is so easy to clean, simply machine wash and air dry; easily air dry the bath mat by hanging it over the side of the bath tub; generously sized bath mat for tub measures 35 by 16 inches, much larger and longer than other mats; providing excellent coverage for shower and bathtub floors
- FOR ALL TUBS, CLIMATE PARTNER CERTIFIED: fits most tubs and inserts; install only on smooth, clean, non‑textured, non‑tiled surfaces; not for use on newly refinished tubs, shower pans, or similar surfaces; designed with sustainability in mind; certified to support initiatives that help address climate impact; carbon footprint measured
The Gorilla Grip chenille bath rug makes the most sense in a family bathroom, rental, children’s bathroom, or any space where the mat will be washed often and replaced without a major investment. Air-drying is the safer routine for preserving its rubber backing. As with every backed mat, keep the floor underneath clean and dry enough for the backing to lie flat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest two-pack and lightweight option: Utopia Towels cotton bath mats
The Utopia Towels set of two is especially useful when a project includes multiple bathrooms or when you want one mat in use while the other is being washed. Shop TODAY rated the set 4/5 overall. The mats are dual-sided, machine washable, dryer-friendly, and relatively quick to dry.
Use a cotton bath mat set when easy laundering and flexible ownership matter more than thick cushioning. The towel-like construction is also less visually bulky than a deep chenille or memory-foam mat. The compromise is comfort: these mats do not provide substantial padding beneath the feet.
Best for a genuinely small space: Eanpet Chenille Bath Mat—with a size warning
The Eanpet Chenille Bath Mat is compact at 15.3 by 23.2 inches, soft, grippy, and good value. That makes it relevant to a narrow powder room or a bathroom where the clear floor area is genuinely limited.
Do not select it simply because the room is described as “small.” Shop TODAY’s tester found that the footprint was too small for many bathrooms and that the mat retained water longer than expected after 20 minutes. A mat that fits beside the sink but leaves the shower exit uncovered may be a poor functional choice.
For a small bathroom with more usable floor area, compare the compact option with the 21-by-34-inch size offered by Quince and L.L.Bean. A low-profile stone mat can also reduce visual bulk, although it will be firmer underfoot.
Best cushioned fabric option: West Elm Memory Foam Bath Mat
Memory foam is the material to consider when standing comfort is more important than a thin, quick-laundering profile. Apartment Therapy selected the West Elm Memory Foam Bath Mat as its overall pick because it combines a removable washable cover, an absorbent memory-foam interior, a textured appearance, and a cushioned feel.
The West Elm memory foam bath mat measures 20 by 34 inches, with a cotton shell and polyurethane foam insert. Apartment Therapy lists cold, gentle machine washing and low tumble drying. The 20-by-34-inch footprint is useful in front of a standard vanity or tub but may be too large for a tight bathroom, and slight initial shedding was reported.
Choose it when a soft landing spot and finished appearance outweigh the advantages of a thin cotton mat. If the bathroom has poor ventilation, remember that a thicker construction may be harder to dry completely than a flat towel-like mat.

Best heavy-duty cotton: L.L.Bean Classic Cotton Bath Mat
The L.L.Bean Classic Cotton Bath Mat is the practical choice for readers who want substantial cotton rather than stone or synthetic chenille. Apartment Therapy describes it as thick, plush, highly absorbent, machine washable, and available in multiple sizes. Its latex backing is intended to improve stability and help keep water from reaching the floor.
The L.L.Bean Classic Cotton Bath Mat is particularly well suited to a family bathroom where durability, coverage, and a traditional rug feel are priorities. The 21-by-34-inch size is relevant to smaller rooms that cannot accommodate a broader mat.
Do not use high heat as a shortcut to faster drying. Apartment Therapy cautions that high heat can damage the latex backing, so use low-temperature drying and follow the current care label.
Best luxury cotton: Weezie Signature Bath Mat
The Weezie Signature Bath Mat is for a bathroom where textile quality and decorative finishing matter as much as basic absorbency. Apartment Therapy reports that its long-staple cotton construction is plush and absorbent, with machine-washable care, hanging and nonslip features, piping, and optional monogramming.

Best lightweight Turkish cotton: Quince Turkish Cotton Non-Slip Bath Rug
The Quince Turkish Cotton Non-Slip Bath Rug offers a middle ground between a thin towel and a thick plush rug. Architectural Digest lists 100% long-staple Turkish Aegean cotton, nonslip backing, 21-by-34-inch and 24-by-40-inch sizes, and cold gentle machine washing with low tumble drying. Its tester described it as lightweight but soft and durable through repeated washing.
A nonslip Turkish cotton bath rug is a good choice when you want a washable natural-fiber surface without the bulk of memory foam. Select the smaller size when the clear floor area is limited; use the larger size only after checking door swings, vanity clearance, and the location of the shower or tub exit.
Best basic towel-like mat: Brooklinen Reversible Looped Bath Mat
The Brooklinen Reversible Looped Bath Mat is designed around straightforward ownership. It is made from 100% Turkish cotton, can be machine washed and low-tumble dried, and is offered in standard and oversized dimensions. Architectural Digest’s tester found it practical and easy to wash, although less plush than some competitors.
The reported drying time was about an hour after use, which is reasonable for a cotton mat but not comparable with the near-immediate surface drying reported for the stone options. Choose it when reversible coverage and simple laundering matter more than maximum cushioning or minimum residual moisture.

Other design-led options: wood and decorative fabric mats
Wood and hinoki mats are alternatives for bathrooms where the mat is intended to look like part of the room’s architecture rather than a small towel on the floor. Apartment Therapy reports that The Citizenry’s Japanese hinoki mat has anti-slip feet, a spa-like appearance, and wipe-clean care.
A Japanese hinoki mat sacrifices the textile-like softness of cotton or chenille. Verify that the feet are compatible with your floor, keep the mat out of direct sunlight as advised in the testing coverage, and confirm how the product should be ventilated between uses. House of Noa and other design-forward options may also suit a visually coordinated bathroom, but appearance should not substitute for checking grip, flatness, cleaning requirements, and water exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a bath mat for a bathroom remodel
1. Measure the usable floor area, not the whole room
Measure the clear, flat area where the mat will sit after accounting for the vanity, toilet, tub, shower door, and door swing. Record both length and width. A mat should not buckle against a door or curl around a fixture, and a smaller mat is not automatically better if it leaves the wettest landing area uncovered.

For a small bathroom, compare your measurements with the product dimensions before considering color or pile height. The Eanpet’s 15.3-by-23.2-inch footprint is genuinely compact; Quince’s 21-by-34-inch option and L.L.Bean’s 21-by-34-inch option provide more useful coverage when that floor area is available.
2. Decide whether you want evaporation or laundering
- Choose stone or diatomaceous earth when the priority is rapid absorption and evaporation, particularly in a humid or heavily used bathroom.
- Choose cotton when you want a familiar towel feel, many size choices, and uncomplicated machine washing.
- Choose chenille or microfiber when softness and pile are more important, while accepting that fibers can mat and rubber-backed versions may need air-drying.
- Choose memory foam when cushioning is the deciding factor and the room has enough space and ventilation for a thicker mat.
- Choose wood or hinoki when low-laundry care and design appeal are worth giving up textile softness.
3. Treat nonslip backing as one part of placement safety
A nonslip backing can help a mat stay in position, but it does not make a bath mat completely slip-proof or eliminate fall risk. Performance depends on the backing, the floor finish, moisture under the mat, whether the mat lies flat, and whether the product is the right size for the location.
Before placing a mat, clean and dry the floor. Do not fold or overlap it. Inspect the backing periodically for curling, cracking, separation, or trapped moisture, and remove the mat if it no longer lies flat or stays in position.
4. Match the care instructions to your household
A machine-washable fabric mat is usually the more convenient choice for families, children, pets, or anyone who wants to launder the mat frequently. Check whether the specific backing permits tumble drying. Rubber- and latex-backed mats commonly require air-drying or low heat, and excessive heat can damage the backing.
Stone mats avoid regular textile laundering but require surface care. Remove visible debris, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions, and use light sanding only when the product instructions permit it. Do not assume that a stone mat is maintenance-free simply because it does not go in the washing machine.
How to keep a bath mat dry and hygienic
- Hang or spread it after use. Do not leave a wet fabric mat bunched against the floor or wall. Give air access to both the pile and the underside when the construction allows.
- Improve room ventilation. Use the bathroom exhaust fan during bathing and for a period afterward, and address persistent condensation. A fast-drying mat helps, but it cannot compensate for a consistently damp room.
- Wash fabric mats according to their labels. Avoid high heat when the mat has rubber or latex backing. Wash chenille and memory-foam components according to their separate instructions.
- Keep the underside clean. Lift the mat during routine floor cleaning so moisture and debris do not remain trapped beneath it.
- Rotate or replace when the mat stops recovering. Persistent odor, backing deterioration, permanent flattening, cracking, fraying, or loss of grip are signs that cleaning is no longer solving the problem.
Best bath mat by bathroom type
Small bathroom or powder room
Measure first, then choose the smallest mat that still covers the relevant wet area. The Eanpet is the most compact named option in this guide, but its limited coverage is a real drawback. A low-profile stone mat can visually reduce bulk, while a 21-by-34-inch cotton mat may be a better functional choice if the room has that much clear floor space.

High-traffic family bathroom
Prioritize drying speed, washable construction, and a backing that remains stable. Stone is compelling when several people use the room and nobody wants a perpetually damp fabric mat. If softness and frequent laundering matter more, consider Gorilla Grip, H.Versailtex, L.L.Bean, or Quince. None should be represented as eliminating fall risk.
Guest bathroom
Cotton and chenille coordinate easily with towels and can be washed between guests. The Utopia two-pack is useful when you want a spare available immediately. A stone mat can be sensible in a poorly ventilated guest bathroom where rapid drying is more important than a soft surface.
Luxury or design-focused bathroom
Weezie, West Elm, Brooklinen, hinoki wood, and other design-led mats provide more visual distinction than a generic microfiber rectangle. Choose based on the room’s actual clearances and maintenance conditions, not appearance alone. A decorative wood mat must still have suitable feet and care requirements for the floor beneath it.
What the testing can—and cannot—tell you
Shop TODAY evaluated nine mats over roughly two weeks for absorbency, drying after 20 minutes, cleaning, grip, feel, and thickness. The tester stepped onto mats with nearly soaking-wet feet and laundered them according to their construction, including air-drying rubber-backed products.
Apartment Therapy says its evaluations consider functionality, appearance, and feel, with testing criteria that include absorbency, drying intervals, washing, nonslip performance, comfort, and fading. Architectural Digest reports staff testing in city apartments, including poorly ventilated spaces, but distinguishes products that were personally tested from additional recommendations.
Those results are useful comparisons, not guarantees for every bathroom. Climate, floor finish, shower splash, number of users, drying time between showers, and the way a mat is washed can change the result. Prices and stock are also time-sensitive and should be checked at publication and before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are stone bath mats better than fabric bath mats?
Are stone bath mats better than fabric bath mats? It depends on the priority. Stone and diatomaceous-earth mats generally offer faster absorption and evaporation, making them useful in humid or high-traffic bathrooms. Fabric mats are softer, easier to fold and store, and usually easier to machine wash. A stone mat is not a soft textile and should not be described as mold-proof or sterilizing.
Does a nonslip bath mat prevent falls?
Does a nonslip bath mat prevent falls? No bath mat should be called completely slip-proof. A nonslip backing may help keep it in place, but safety also depends on the floor surface, moisture under the mat, flatness, placement, and the condition of the backing. Replace or remove a mat that curls, slides, cracks, or separates.
Can rubber-backed bath mats go in the dryer?
Can rubber-backed bath mats go in the dryer? Follow the product’s care label. The H.Versailtex and Gorilla Grip testing guidance recommends air-drying to help preserve rubber backing, while L.L.Bean’s latex-backed mat should be dried at low temperature because high heat can damage the latex.
How often should a bath mat be washed?
How often should a bath mat be washed? There is no single schedule that fits every household. Wash it when it becomes visibly dirty, damp-smelling, or slow to dry, and more often in a busy family bathroom. Hang or spread it after every use so it can dry between washes.
What is the best bath mat for a poorly ventilated bathroom?
What is the best bath mat for a poorly ventilated bathroom? Start with a stone or diatomaceous-earth mat because rapid drying and low residual moisture are its main advantages. Dorai and Sutera were supported by recent editor testing for fast drying. Improve ventilation as well; a bath mat cannot solve persistent room humidity by itself.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick the Sutera or Dorai if fast drying is the main problem, H.Versailtex or Gorilla Grip if you want soft washable chenille, L.L.Bean or Quince for cotton, and West Elm if cushioning matters most. Measure the clear floor area before ordering, follow the backing’s drying instructions, and treat nonslip construction as a stability aid—not a guarantee against falls.
