Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people who need a temporary guest bed, the SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress is the best overall choice in 2026. Good Housekeeping named it its best overall air mattress after testing 15 models, Forbes Vetted also selected it as best overall after testing eight, and Reviewed found it the most comfortable model in its hands-on comparison. It combines a raised, bed-like height, internal air coils, a built-in pump, and strong comfort and support results.

This guide is especially useful when a bedroom is temporarily unavailable during a renovation, move, repair, or other household project. The recommendations below report testing from Good Housekeeping, Forbes Vetted, Reviewed, and T3; they are not independent tests conducted by Bettesworth Construction.

What counts as a temporary air mattress?

A temporary air mattress is an inflatable guest bed or portable sleeping surface. It is designed to be inflated when needed, deflated for storage or transport, and used in places such as a spare room, living room, temporary accommodation, or a home affected by construction work.

That category is different from an adjustable airbed such as the Saatva Solaire or InnoMax Harmony. Those products use air chambers as the permanent support core of a conventional mattress system. Sleep Foundation’s 2026 airbed guide places the Solaire first overall and the InnoMax Harmony first for value, but both belong to a substantially different price, construction, and intended-use category. They should not be compared directly with a portable inflatable guest bed.

#1 Best Overall
SoundAsleep Dream Series Raised Queen Air Mattress, Built-in Pump, Blue | ComfortCoil Technology, fast 1-click inflation, waterproof flocked top and SureGrip bottom create a stable guest bed for two
  • Queen air mattress for guest comfort: raised Dream Series air bed combines ComfortCoil Technology, a soft flocked top, and a built-in pump for a stable, bed-like sleep setup at home
  • ComfortCoil Technology support: forty internal air coils help keep the Queen mattress flat, firm, and stable through the night for one sleeper or two guests
  • Fast one-click inflation: patented built-in pump inflates the Queen air mattress in under four minutes and deflates quickly for compact storage
  • Raised double-height design: 19-inch dual-chamber Queen air bed makes getting in and out easier and helps create a more bed-like sleep experience
  • Roomy Queen size: measures 80 x 60 x 19 inches with space for two adults, overnight guests, spare rooms, moving, dorms, and temporary indoor sleep setups

Best overall: SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress

The SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress is the safest default recommendation for most households that need a comfortable temporary bed. Good Housekeeping named it best overall in its 2026 testing, Forbes Vetted reached the same conclusion after testing eight models, and Reviewed previously reported that it offered the best combination of comfort and support among the mattresses it tested.

Good Housekeeping found the Dream Series comfortable and supportive. Its construction includes 40 internal air coils, a grippy bottom to help limit movement on the floor, an integrated pump, and an approximately 19-inch height. In Good Housekeeping’s test, the queen inflated in under four minutes. Forbes Vetted lists sizes from twin through California King XL, as well as children’s sizes, and reports a stated 600-pound weight capacity. Because air-mattress specifications can differ by size, treat that capacity as a model specification and verify the size-specific listing before purchase.

The height is useful for a guest room or a temporary bedroom during a renovation: it feels more like getting onto a conventional bed than sleeping directly on the floor. It also makes getting up easier for many adults. The trade-off is that a taller mattress is generally bulkier to store and transport than a low-profile camping pad.

What to watch for

  • Possible gradual deflation: Good Housekeeping notes that some online reviewers reported losing air over time. That is a reported limitation, not evidence that every unit will deflate.
  • Cool PVC feel: Reviewed found that the PVC surface could feel chilly. A properly sized sheet or washable mattress protector can add a more familiar sleeping surface.
  • Queen dimensions: Reviewed found the queen slightly smaller than a regular queen mattress, so measure the available space and check the published dimensions rather than assuming standard sizing.

Choose the SoundAsleep first when comfort, support, and an elevated guest-bed feel matter more than the smallest packed size. It is the strongest all-around option for visitors staying during a room renovation or for a household that wants one dependable temporary bed.

Best value: Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort Air Mattress

The Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe is the value choice for shoppers who want a raised temporary bed without prioritizing the fastest pack-up. Good Housekeeping named it best value and found that its queen model took about four and a half minutes to inflate. Testers found the surface flat and firm overnight, and Good Housekeeping reported that the 22-inch version was the tallest air bed in its test group.

Height varies substantially within the Dura-Beam family. Good Housekeeping discusses 13-, 18-, and 22-inch versions. Intex’s official product information for a 13-inch full model describes Fiber-Tech construction, a dual-layer comfort top, reinforced edge and bottom rings, an internal pump, an approximate three-minute inflation time for that specific model, a 600-pound maximum weight limit, a carry bag, and a one-year limited warranty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those numbers should not be transferred from one size to another. A 13-inch full model is not the same product configuration as a 22-inch queen, and dimensions, inflation time, packed size, and capacity may differ. Check the exact size and height in the listing before comparing it with another mattress.

The value trade-off

Intex is better suited to a guest room than to frequent transport. Good Housekeeping found that it took the longest to deflate among its tested finalists. If the bed will be inflated for several nights or weeks while a room is being repaired, that may matter little. If it must be packed away every morning or moved between locations, the slower deflation is a meaningful inconvenience.

Choose the Intex when price, height choice, and a firm, flat overnight surface are the priorities. Choose a different model if fast teardown is central to your routine.

Best for repeated or everyday temporary use: Serta Raised Air Mattress with Never Flat Pump

The Serta Never Flat air mattress is the most distinctive choice for someone who expects to sleep on a temporary bed repeatedly and has access to a nearby electrical outlet. Good Housekeeping selected it for everyday use because its dual-pump system continuously monitors and adjusts air pressure during the night. The reviewer could also choose among three firmness presets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Good Housekeeping’s test, the queen inflated to medium firmness in just under two and a half minutes. It also performed particularly well in puncture-resistance testing. Retailer specifications describe an 18-inch raised bed with circular coils, a flocked top, a primary pump for inflation and deflation, and a secondary pump intended to maintain pressure. The listed maximum weight is 500 pounds.

The non-negotiable limitation

The Never Flat system needs to remain plugged in while it maintains pressure. It is therefore a good fit for a guest room, temporary bedroom, or renovation situation with a safe, accessible outlet, but a poor fit for remote camping or any location where continuous power is unavailable. Some Good Housekeeping testers also found the plastic noisy, and putting the mattress back into its storage bag could require two people.

Rank #2
SoundAsleep Dream Series Raised Full Air Mattress, Built-in Pump, Blue | ComfortCoil Technology, fast 1-click inflation, waterproof flocked top and SureGrip bottom create a guest bed for one or two
  • Full air mattress for guest comfort: raised Dream Series air bed combines ComfortCoil Technology, a soft flocked top, and a built-in pump for a stable, bed-like sleep setup at home
  • ComfortCoil Technology support: thirty five internal air coils help keep the Full mattress flat, firm, and stable through the night for one sleeper or two guests
  • Fast one-click inflation: patented built-in pump inflates the Full air mattress in under four minutes and deflates quickly for compact storage
  • Raised double-height design: 18.5-inch dual-chamber Full air bed makes getting in and out easier and helps create a more bed-like sleep experience
  • Roomy Full size: measures 76 x 56 x 18.5 inches with space for two adults, overnight guests, spare rooms, moving, dorms, and temporary indoor sleep setups

Do not buy the Serta expecting it to behave like a silent, maintenance-free conventional mattress. Buy it when overnight pressure retention is more important than complete freedom from a power cord.

Easiest setup: King Koil Luxury Raised Air Mattress

The King Koil Luxury Raised Air Mattress is the convenience pick. Good Housekeeping named it best with a built-in pump and found it the fastest model to inflate and deflate in its testing. Its testers found it comfortable and supportive, while the design includes air coils, flocked material on the top and sides, and a built-in cord compartment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good Housekeeping measured inflation at approximately two minutes. King Koil’s current product information claims 60-to-90-second inflation and deflation using its high-speed built-in pump. The manufacturer’s figure is a specification claim, not the result of Good Housekeeping’s independent test. The product page also lists multiple sizes and heights and a one-year warranty.

There are reasons not to treat speed as proof of superior durability. Good Housekeeping noted customer-service issues during its testing. Reviewed found a King Koil model comfortable but less stable when sleepers moved and more prone to overnight deflation than its top pick.

King Koil makes sense when a bed must be set up and taken down quickly, particularly for occasional guests or a temporary sleeping arrangement during home work. It is less compelling if the mattress will be used by restless sleepers every night or if long-term air retention is the main concern.

Best alternative value design: Coleman SupportRest Elite Quilted Top Double High Airbed

The Coleman SupportRest Elite airbed is the best alternative for shoppers who dislike the cold, slippery, or noisy feel of exposed PVC. Reviewed selected it as its best-value model. The tested queen configuration is approximately 15.25 inches high and has a removable, washable quilted top.

That textile layer adds warmth, reduces the direct contact with PVC, and helps dampen rustling noise. Reviewed found the Coleman affordable, supportive, and quick to inflate. The main comfort qualification is firmness: some sleepers may find it too firm.

Reviewed’s tested configuration is identified as queen-only, so do not assume that every size or retailer listing has the same quilted-top design. Select the Coleman when surface feel is a deciding factor and you would rather have an integrated textile layer than add a sheet to a conventional PVC air mattress.

How the mattresses were evaluated

The recommendations come from published testing rather than from manufacturer marketing alone, but each publication used its own method. The results should be read as corroborating evidence, not as one unified laboratory score.

Good Housekeeping

Good Housekeeping tested 15 air mattresses in its Textiles Lab and with at-home consumer testers. Its protocol included:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inflation and deflation time
  • Setup, packing, and storage experience
  • Overnight leakage, using 170 pounds of sand over 24 hours
  • Sagging and indentation, using a 10-pound weight
  • Burst strength and puncture resistance with specialized equipment
  • Comfort testing by laboratory and at-home testers with different body types and sleep positions

That combination makes its results particularly useful for a temporary guest bed, where overnight pressure retention and ease of packing matter as much as first impressions of softness.

Forbes Vetted

Forbes Vetted reports testing eight air mattresses for comfort, durability, and ease of use. Its independent best-overall selection also went to the SoundAsleep Dream Series, which strengthens the case for that model even though the two publications did not use identical protocols.

Rank #3
SoundAsleep Dream Series Raised Twin Air Mattress, Built-in Pump, Blue | ComfortCoil Technology, fast 1-click inflation, waterproof flocked top and SureGrip bottom create a stable guest bed for one
  • Twin air mattress for guest comfort: raised Dream Series air bed combines ComfortCoil Technology, a soft flocked top, and a built-in pump for a stable, bed-like sleep setup at home
  • ComfortCoil Technology support: twenty one internal air coils help keep the Twin mattress flat, firm, and stable through the night for one sleeper or two guests
  • Fast one-click inflation: patented built-in pump inflates the Twin air mattress in under four minutes and deflates quickly for compact storage
  • Raised double-height design: 18.5-inch dual-chamber Twin air bed makes getting in and out easier and helps create a more bed-like sleep experience
  • Roomy Twin size: measures 74 x 40 x 18.5 inches with space for two adults, overnight guests, spare rooms, moving, dorms, and temporary indoor sleep setups

Reviewed and T3

Reviewed reports testing popular brands for weeks, focusing on comfort, overnight deflation, built-in pumps, airtight seams, customer service, and warranty support. Its testing named SoundAsleep the most comfortable overall and Coleman the best-value alternative, while also identifying limitations with the PVC feel and some King Koil models.

T3 says its team sleeps on tested air mattresses for at least a month and, where possible, updates reviews after six months or more. That longer-use perspective is useful because an air mattress can seem excellent during a single night but become less attractive when it must be inflated, deflated, and stored repeatedly.

How to choose the right temporary air mattress

1. Start with where and how it will be used

For a guest bed in a home, prioritize comfort, raised height, edge stability, and overnight air retention. For a mattress that will be stored frequently, prioritize packed weight, deflation time, carry-bag design, and cord storage. For camping, electrical access, packed weight, and tent fit become more important than a tall indoor design.

A tall 18- to 22-inch mattress can be convenient indoors but bulky in a vehicle and difficult to fit inside a smaller tent. A built-in 120-volt pump is convenient beside a household outlet but unsuitable for remote camping unless you have a compatible power source. T3 specifically distinguishes home-oriented air mattresses from lighter camping mattresses; do not treat an indoor guest bed as backpacking equipment.

2. Choose height deliberately

Raised models around 18 inches or higher generally feel more like conventional beds and are easier for many people to get onto and off of. That benefit is particularly relevant when a temporary bed is replacing a normal bedroom during construction or repairs.

The cost is storage volume. A taller mattress usually takes more room in a closet, vehicle, or storage unit. If the bed will be used only in one room for several nights, height is usually a worthwhile convenience. If it will travel often, compare the packed dimensions and weight rather than the inflated height alone.

3. Look for internal support and a usable surface

Good Housekeeping notes that vertical air coils generally distribute weight more supportively than simple side-to-side beams. Flocked fabric can improve the feel, reduce sliding, and help keep a sheet in place. A quilted top, as on the Coleman SupportRest Elite, goes further by adding warmth and reducing the direct sensation and sound of PVC.

These features do not guarantee comfort for every sleeper. Firmness preference, body weight, sleep position, and movement during the night all affect the result. If several people will use the bed, a model with stronger independent comfort testing is a better starting point than choosing by height alone.

4. Treat capacity and timing as size-specific specifications

Air-mattress product families often contain several heights and sizes with different dimensions, pump times, capacities, and packed weights. The Intex Dura-Beam line is a clear example: the official specifications for the 13-inch full model should not automatically be applied to an 18-inch or 22-inch queen.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • The exact size and inflated dimensions
  • The manufacturer’s maximum weight limit
  • Whether the listed inflation time applies to that exact configuration
  • The pump type and whether it includes automatic shutoff or firmness control
  • The packed dimensions and carry-bag arrangement
  • The warranty period and the retailer’s return policy

A stated weight capacity is not a comfort rating, and a manufacturer’s inflation-time claim is not the same as an independent test result. In this guide, the roughly two-minute King Koil and under-four-minute SoundAsleep figures are reported test results from Good Housekeeping; the 60-to-90-second King Koil figure and approximately three-minute Intex figure are manufacturer specifications for particular configurations.

Practical accessories and maintenance supplies

A few accessories solve real problems rather than simply adding clutter:

  • air mattress patch kit: useful to keep available if a puncture develops during storage or use. Match the kit to the mattress material and follow the mattress maker’s repair instructions.
  • Washable mattress protector: adds a cleanable barrier between the sleeper and the mattress surface, especially helpful when the bed is used by multiple guests.
  • Deep-pocket sheets for raised air mattresses: useful for taller models, but verify the sheet depth and the mattress’s actual inflated dimensions before buying.
  • Storage bag: important if the original bag is lost or damaged. A replacement should be large enough for the fully deflated and folded mattress rather than merely matching its inflated size.
  • Portable air mattress pump: relevant when the mattress has no convenient built-in pump or when a low-profile camping setup requires a lighter pump.

Do not assume that a generic sheet, pump, or repair kit is compatible with every model. Accessories are most useful when selected after checking the exact mattress size, valve design, surface material, and intended setting.

Rank #4
SoundAsleep Dream Series Raised King Air Mattress, Built-in Pump, Blue | ComfortCoil Technology, fast 1-click inflation, waterproof flocked top and SureGrip bottom create a stable guest bed for two
  • King air mattress for guest comfort: raised Dream Series air bed combines ComfortCoil Technology, a soft flocked top, and a built-in pump for a stable, bed-like sleep setup at home
  • ComfortCoil Technology support: forty eight internal air coils help keep the King mattress flat, firm, and stable through the night for one sleeper or two guests
  • Fast one-click inflation: patented built-in pump inflates the King air mattress in under four minutes and deflates quickly for compact storage
  • Raised double-height design: 18-inch dual-chamber King air bed makes getting in and out easier and helps create a more bed-like sleep experience
  • Roomy King size: measures 84 x 72 x 18 inches with space for two adults, overnight guests, spare rooms, moving, dorms, and temporary indoor sleep setups

Camping versus indoor guest use

If the mattress will be used outdoors, shop as a camper rather than simply choosing the tallest indoor guest bed. Compare packed weight, folded dimensions, tent-floor fit, insulation and surface design, pump type, and whether you can inflate it without a household outlet.

A camping air mattress or camping sleep system may be a better choice than the SoundAsleep, Intex, Serta, or King Koil models above. A rechargeable air pump can also be more practical outdoors than a built-in 120-volt pump. These are separate buying categories; the indoor models in this guide were selected primarily for guest-room comfort and convenience, not for backpacking or remote camping.

Common problems and how to avoid them

The bed loses firmness overnight

First check whether the issue is a size-specific limitation, a valve problem, a puncture, or simply a model that does not actively maintain pressure. The Serta Never Flat is the only recommendation here designed to monitor and adjust pressure continuously, and it must stay plugged in to do so. With other mattresses, inflate the bed before guests arrive and verify that the pump, valve, and seams appear to be functioning correctly. Keep an appropriate patch kit available for a confirmed puncture.

The surface feels cold or noisy

Exposed PVC can feel chilly, as Reviewed observed with the SoundAsleep, and some Serta testers found its plastic noisy. A fitted sheet or washable mattress protector can create a more familiar surface. If the surface itself is the deciding factor, the Coleman’s removable quilted top is the most direct solution among these recommendations.

The mattress moves when someone turns over

Look for a grippy bottom, internal coil support, and enough floor space for the mattress to sit flat. The SoundAsleep has a grippy bottom and performed strongly for support, while Reviewed reported that a King Koil model was less stable during movement. Leave sufficient clearance around the bed and do not assume that a high profile alone prevents movement.

The mattress is difficult to pack away

Deflation speed and folding are separate considerations. Good Housekeeping found the Intex slowest to deflate among its finalists, while the Serta could require two people to fold back into its bag. King Koil was the fastest in Good Housekeeping’s inflation and deflation tests. If storage is part of your daily routine, consider those results more heavily than a small difference in inflated height.

Our recommendation by situation

  • For most guest rooms or renovation-related temporary sleeping arrangements: choose the SoundAsleep Dream Series.
  • For the strongest value and a choice of heights: choose the Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe, provided slow deflation is acceptable.
  • For frequent temporary sleeping with an outlet beside the bed: choose the Serta Never Flat for active overnight pressure maintenance.
  • For the quickest setup and teardown: choose the King Koil Luxury Raised Air Mattress, while keeping its service and stability caveats in mind.
  • For a warmer, less plasticky and potentially quieter sleeping surface: choose the Coleman SupportRest Elite Quilted Top Double High Airbed.
  • For remote outdoor use: shop the camping category instead of selecting an indoor raised guest bed by height alone.

Testing and sourcing note

Product findings in this article are attributed to the publications and product pages that reported them. Good Housekeeping’s 15-model testing, Forbes Vetted’s eight-model comparison, Reviewed’s hands-on evaluations, T3’s longer-use review approach, and manufacturer or retailer specifications answer different questions. A manufacturer-stated capacity, warranty, or inflation time is presented as a specification; it is not converted into an editorial durability or performance test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SoundAsleep Dream Series a permanent mattress replacement?

No. It is a temporary inflatable guest bed. Permanent adjustable airbeds such as the Saatva Solaire and InnoMax Harmony use air chambers as the support core of a conventional mattress system and belong to a different product category.

Which air mattress stays inflated the best overnight?

The Serta Raised Air Mattress with Never Flat Pump is the clearest choice for active overnight pressure maintenance because its secondary pump monitors and adjusts pressure. It must remain plugged in, so it is intended for indoor use near an outlet.

Can I use one of these air mattresses for camping?

Some may work for car camping where you have suitable power and enough space, but they are primarily indoor guest beds. For remote camping, compare camping-specific airbeds or sleep systems by packed weight, tent fit, insulation, and pump requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all sizes in an air-mattress family have the same specifications?

No. Height, dimensions, weight capacity, inflation time, packed size, and included features can vary by size and model. Verify the exact configuration before ordering; the Intex Dura-Beam range illustrates this difference.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the SoundAsleep Dream Series for the best all-around temporary guest bed. Choose the Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe for value, the Serta Never Flat when you can keep the mattress plugged in and want active pressure maintenance, the King Koil for fast setup, and the Coleman SupportRest Elite when a quilted, warmer-feeling surface matters most. Keep adjustable airbeds and camping sleep systems in their own categories rather than comparing them directly with indoor inflatable guest mattresses.
