Intex is the best-value choice, Serta’s Never Flat system is designed for frequent indoor use, Coleman is the camping pick, and The Shrunks Travel Bed is the specialized child option. This guide summarizes those publications’ tests; it does not claim that this site personally performed them.
The best air mattresses at a glance
The right choice depends on whether you need a guest bed, a camping bed, a pressure-maintaining mattress, or a compact child travel bed. Do not compare these picks on brand name alone: height, pump system, dimensions, and weight capacity can change between sizes and model numbers.
| Pick | Best for | Why it stands out | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress | Best overall | Published testing found strong comfort and support; the queen is 19 inches tall, with 40 internal air coils, a flocked top, and a built-in pump. | Some online reviewers have reported gradual deflation, so it should not be described as leakproof. |
| Intex Dura-Beam air mattress | Best value | The 22-inch queen inflated in about four and a half minutes in Good Housekeeping testing. The manufacturer lists Fiber-Tech construction, a built-in pump, and a 600-pound maximum weight limit for that version. | Dura-Beam specifications vary substantially by height and size. |
| Serta Never Flat air mattress | Frequent use | A second pump is designed to monitor and adjust pressure overnight. | It must stay plugged in for the pressure-maintenance function, and the pump or plastic may be noisy. |
| King Koil raised air mattress | A built-in-pump alternative | Good Housekeeping named it its best built-in-pump option, while Forbes Vetted selected King Koil as its best queen-size air mattress. | Features and dimensions vary among current King Koil listings. |
| Coleman SupportRest air bed | Camping | Good Housekeeping recorded inflation in under two minutes and no overnight air loss in its test. | The separate pump was loud in testing, and capacity depends on size. |
| The Shrunks Travel Bed | Children’s travel | Toddler and twin versions have perimeter bumpers, a low profile, and a slot for tucking in a sheet. | This is a specialized child travel bed, not a general-purpose adult mattress. |
| Best Choice Products Tri-Fold Mattress | People who do not want an inflatable mattress | A foldable, foam-style temporary bed with no inflation or air-pressure management. | It is an alternative to an air mattress, not an air mattress, and will have a different storage and transport profile. |
Our verdict: SoundAsleep Dream Series is the best overall pick
Good Housekeeping named the SoundAsleep Dream Series its best overall air mattress, and Forbes Vetted also chose it as best overall. That agreement is the strongest evidence in this guide, although it is still published third-party testing rather than testing performed by this site.

The queen configuration is 19 inches high, a useful middle ground between a low, portable mattress and a bed-height model. Good Housekeeping highlighted its flocked sleeping surface, built-in automatic-shutoff pump, 40 air coils, support, and comfort. The manufacturer describes the construction as ComfortCoil support with a flocked top and PVC body, and offers the Dream Series in multiple sizes.
The height should make getting on and off easier than with a floor-level air bed, while the built-in pump simplifies setup for an indoor guest room or temporary sleeping arrangement. Forbes Vetted lists a 600-pound capacity for the model it reviewed, but confirm the capacity printed on the exact size and current listing before relying on it. A queen rating should be treated as a combined occupant limit, not a promise that every size in the product family has the same rating.

Our high-tensile internal structures act as a rigid skeleton, connecting top and bottom layers. The important qualification is leakage. No air mattress should be sold as permanently leakproof. Good Housekeeping noted that some online reviewers reported gradual deflation, so check the mattress after setup and investigate repeated softness rather than assuming the model will hold pressure indefinitely.
Best value: Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort-Plush
The Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort-Plush is the value choice from Good Housekeeping, particularly for buyers furnishing a guest space without paying for an overnight pressure-maintenance system.
Good Housekeeping reports that the 22-inch queen took approximately four and a half minutes to inflate in testing. On its official product information, Intex lists a built-in pump, Fiber-Tech construction, a carry bag, a 600-pound maximum weight limit, and an approximate 4.75-minute inflation time for the 22-inch queen version. The small difference between the test result and the manufacturer’s estimate is normal for specifications measured under different conditions; neither figure should be generalized to another size.
That last point matters with the Dura-Beam name. The family includes 13-inch models and other heights, as well as twin, full, queen, and other configurations. Dimensions, capacity, pump type, warranty, and availability may differ by SKU. Before buying, match the product page to the exact height and size you need. A 22-inch queen specification is not automatically the specification for a 13-inch twin.
Choose this model when value, a reasonably bed-like height, and a built-in pump matter more than automatic pressure correction during the night. It is a practical guest-bed choice, but the mattress still needs appropriate storage and protection from punctures.
Best for frequent use: Serta Raised Air Mattress with Never Flat Pump
The Serta Never Flat air mattress addresses the most common air-bed complaint: pressure falling during the night. Good Housekeeping selected it for everyday or frequent use because its dual-pump system is designed to maintain pressure while the sleeper is on the mattress.

A second pump monitors the pressure and automatically adds air when needed. That is a meaningful distinction from an ordinary built-in pump, which usually stops after initial inflation and leaves the sleeper to make any later adjustment manually.
The system has a non-obvious requirement: the mattress must remain plugged in for the active pressure-maintenance function to operate. That makes it more suitable for a room with a convenient electrical outlet than for camping, emergency use during a power outage, or a location where cords are impractical. Some Good Housekeeping testers also found the plastic material noisy. If a quiet sleeping surface is important, weigh that drawback against the convenience of overnight pressure adjustment.

- COMFORT: With a bed height of 22" this luxurious and unique dual-layer air pocket system contours to your body for supreme comfort; with a velvety top and sides that are soft to the touch, and resist punctures and abrasions; on-the-go carry bag included.Amperage : 0.65 A
- UNIQUE EDGE CONSTRUCTION – Dura-Beam Air Mattresses are designed with a unique edge construction to withstand the weight of the sleeper without sagging and is 100% more durable, 35% more supportive and 15% lighter than a traditional airbed
- LUMBAR SUPPORT – Horizontally positioned Dura-Beams provides 50% greater individual strand count for an improved full body support; Fiber-Tech Construction is comprised of thousands of high-strength polyester fibers for amazing durability and strength
- BUILT-IN AC ELECTRIC PUMP – High-Powered built-in electric pump (110-120V) for hassle-free inflation and deflation; users can easily and quickly set up the air mattress when they need it and then deflate it (Approximate inflation time 4.75 minutes)
- STRETCH – At first inflation the material will STRETCH, which is sometimes misinterpreted as leaking; You will sense a loss of pressure, that's just the bed stretching, simply re-inflate the bed again; the bed will fully settle within 2-3 nights
“Frequent use” does not mean that this guide considers an air mattress a guaranteed permanent nightly bed or a medical product. It means the Never Flat system is the most targeted choice here for people who regularly use an air mattress indoors and can leave it connected to power.
Best built-in-pump alternative: King Koil
Good Housekeeping labels the King Koil raised air mattress its best option with a built-in pump. Forbes Vetted also names King Koil as its best queen-size air mattress. That makes it a credible alternative when the SoundAsleep or Intex model is unavailable or when a particular King Koil size better fits the room.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is an important buying caveat: King Koil is a product line rather than one single universal configuration. Marketplace listings can differ in height, dimensions, pump arrangement, capacity, and availability. Check the current retailer or brand listing for the exact model number, sleeping dimensions, included pump, and weight limit before purchasing. Do not transfer specifications from one King Koil listing to another simply because both use the same brand name.
For the same reason, the King Koil recommendation is best understood as a tested model category and size-specific option, not proof that every current King Koil air bed performs identically.
Best for camping: Coleman Double-High SupportRest
The Coleman SupportRest air bed is the camping-oriented pick. Good Housekeeping reports that its camping selection inflated in less than two minutes and did not lose air overnight in that test. The test result is encouraging, but it is not a guarantee that every unit will maintain pressure in every temperature, campsite, or surface condition.
The separate pump is the main compromise. Good Housekeeping found it loud. A separate pump can nevertheless be useful when you want flexibility away from a household outlet, provided you bring a compatible power source or manual alternative for the exact model. Confirm what the current package includes rather than assuming every SupportRest listing contains the same pump.
Coleman publishes general weight guidelines of 300 pounds for a twin airbed, 450 pounds for a full, and 600 pounds for a queen. These are size-level guidelines from Coleman, not a universal rating for every Coleman airbed or every SupportRest variant. Use the capacity on the exact product label when the model-specific figure is available, and count the combined weight of everyone using the bed.
Coleman also explains why a new air bed may feel softer after its first inflation: the material can stretch. Top it up before concluding that it has a leak. If it repeatedly loses pressure after the material has settled, begin a leak check.

Best for children: The Shrunks Travel Bed
The Shrunks Travel Bed is the specialist option for children. Good Housekeeping recommends it in toddler and twin sizes, with perimeter bumpers, a low profile, and a slot that lets a sheet be tucked in around the sleeping surface.
Those features solve different problems from an adult guest mattress: a lower design can be easier to use as a travel bed, bumpers help define the sleeping area, and the sheet-tucking slot can make bedding less prone to slipping. This should not be treated as a general-purpose adult air mattress. Follow the manufacturer’s age, size, occupancy, and supervision instructions for the exact version, and do not infer child safety from a product description alone.
Best non-inflatable alternative: Best Choice Products Tri-Fold Mattress
If the pump, inflation time, and possibility of a puncture are deal-breakers, Forbes Vetted lists the Best Choice Products Tri-Fold Mattress as its best air-mattress alternative. It is a foldable foam-style temporary mattress, not an inflatable air bed.
A tri-fold makes sense for someone who wants to unfold a sleeping surface without filling it with air or maintaining pressure. The trade-off is that it does not compress and store in the same way as an air mattress, so compare the folded dimensions and the available storage space before choosing it. It is also a separate category: the air-mattress test results above do not apply to its construction or comfort.
How the published testing was done
The recommendations above combine two independent published guides. Their findings should be read as corroboration, not as one blended laboratory score.
Good Housekeeping
Good Housekeeping reports testing 15 air mattresses in its Textiles Lab and with consumer testers at home. Its evaluations covered:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Inflation and deflation time
- Setup, packing, and ease of use
- Overnight leakage
- Sagging and indentation
- Bursting strength and puncture resistance
- Comfort and support
- Feedback from people who used the mattresses at home
For its overnight-leakage procedure, Good Housekeeping weighed a mattress, placed 170 pounds of sand on it for 24 hours, and weighed it again. It measured indentation with a 10-pound weight. Those controlled procedures are more informative than a brief showroom impression, but they still represent a particular test environment. Results do not guarantee that an individual mattress will never leak or feel identical to every sleeper.
Forbes Vetted
Forbes Vetted says its team tested eight air mattresses for comfort, durability, and ease of use. Its published selections provide useful independent confirmation, especially where the two guides select the same model or brand. The available research does not provide enough detail to treat the Forbes Vetted work as the same protocol as Good Housekeeping’s sand-load and indentation tests, so the two methods are kept separate here.

How to choose the right air mattress
1. Choose height based on access and storage
Good Housekeeping reports that models around 18 inches or higher generally feel more like a conventional bed and are easier to get onto and off, particularly for people with sore knees or mobility limitations. Taller models are not automatically more comfortable, however, and they usually take up more space when stored.
Lower air beds are typically easier to transport and store. They can make sense for camping, children’s travel, or a small room where the mattress must be put away frequently. Measure both the inflated footprint and the storage area; the packaged dimensions may be much different from the sleeping dimensions.

2. Look for meaningful internal support
Air coils and vertical chambers can distribute weight more effectively than simple horizontal beams. The SoundAsleep Dream Series, for example, is described with 40 internal air coils, while the Intex Dura-Beam uses Fiber-Tech construction. These design descriptions help explain how a mattress is built, but construction alone does not establish comfort, durability, or suitability for a particular sleeper.
3. Match the pump to the location
- Built-in electric pump: Usually the simplest choice for an indoor guest room because the pump is integrated and setup is straightforward.
- Separate electric pump: Can be more flexible for camping or replacement, but it adds another item to carry and may be loud.
- Manual or battery-powered pump: Worth considering where there is no dependable outlet, after confirming compatibility with the mattress valve.
- Never Flat-style secondary pump: Useful for maintaining pressure overnight, but it requires continuous electrical power while that feature is active.
4. Verify the exact capacity and dimensions
Never carry over the specifications of a queen to a twin, or of one height to another. Product families can change capacity, dimensions, pump type, warranty, and availability from one SKU to the next. Check the exact model listing and label, and use the combined weight of all occupants when comparing the rating.
5. Think about the surface and bedding
Use the mattress on a clean surface away from nails, screws, rough debris, pet claws, and other sharp objects. A fitted sheet can make the surface more comfortable and help keep bedding in place, but it must fit the mattress dimensions without creating excessive tension. Keep the bed away from radiators and space heaters, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the permitted environment and temperature.
6. Plan for storage before you buy
For a guest mattress, confirm that the carry bag or storage area can accommodate the deflated bed. For a jobsite, temporary lodging, or camping trip, account for the pump, power source, bedding, repair supplies, and the mattress’s packed size—not just the sleeping surface.
Air-mattress setup and maintenance
- Clear the area. Remove sharp objects and check the floor or ground before unpacking.
- Inflate to the manufacturer’s intended firmness. Avoid over-inflation, which can stress seams and materials.
- Allow for initial material stretch. A new mattress may soften after first inflation without having a puncture. Coleman recommends topping it up before treating that initial change as evidence of a leak.
- Check pressure before sleeping. If the mattress is still losing air after the initial settling period, follow the manufacturer’s leak-location procedure.
- Use the correct repair method. Good Housekeeping recommends locating and patching leaks when practical. Coleman distinguishes liquid sealant for flocked or laminated PVC from adhesive patches for smooth PVC.
- Do not force the deflation process. Good Housekeeping advises patience because excessive force can damage some built-in pumps.
- Store it clean and dry. Deflate it as directed, let any moisture dry, fold it without sharp creases where the manufacturer advises, and use the supplied or appropriate storage bag.
Larger holes and cuts may not repair successfully. If a patch does not hold after the surface has been prepared according to the repair-product instructions, replacement may be more practical than repeatedly stressing the seam.
Useful accessories
- air mattress repair kit: Choose a kit that matches the surface. Flocked and laminated PVC may require a liquid sealant, while smooth PVC may accept an adhesive patch.
- portable air mattress pump: Useful as a backup or for a mattress with no integrated pump, but verify the valve adapter and power requirements before travel.
- fitted sheets for an air mattress: Match the sheet to the inflated dimensions and height so it does not pull excessively on the mattress.
- Storage supplies: A clean storage bag and a way to keep the deflated mattress dry can help prevent damage between uses.
Accessories are optional; the mattress’s own instructions take priority, particularly for pump compatibility, cleaning, repair compounds, and storage.

Which one should you buy?
- For most indoor guest use: Choose the SoundAsleep Dream Series if its exact size, capacity, and current availability suit your room.
- For the strongest value case: Choose the correctly specified Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort-Plush, especially the 22-inch queen if that is the version you need.
- For repeated indoor use with an outlet: Consider the Serta Never Flat, accepting its power requirement and possible noise.
- For a different built-in-pump queen option: Check the current King Koil model listing carefully.
- For camping: Start with the Coleman SupportRest and plan for its separate, potentially loud pump and the correct size-specific capacity.
- For a child’s travel bed: Use the Shrunks only as the specialized product and size intended by its manufacturer.
- For a no-inflation solution: Compare the folded dimensions of the Best Choice Products Tri-Fold Mattress with your storage space.
Before ordering, verify the exact model number, size, inflated dimensions, weight limit, pump arrangement, warranty, current retailer, price, and availability. Those details can change across listings and are not interchangeable within a product family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my air mattress lose air overnight?
Some softness after the first inflation may be caused by the material stretching, according to Coleman, rather than by a puncture. Top up the mattress and monitor it. If it repeatedly loses pressure after the initial settling period, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to locate and repair the leak. Do not describe any air mattress as leakproof.
Recommended Free Tools
How much weight can an air mattress hold?
Use the capacity for the exact size and model, not a general brand or product-family figure. Coleman’s published general guidelines are 300 pounds for twin, 450 pounds for full, and 600 pounds for queen airbeds. The Intex 22-inch queen Dura-Beam page lists a 600-pound maximum. Confirm the current label and count the combined weight of all occupants.
Which air mattress is best for camping?
The Coleman Double-High SupportRest is the camping pick in Good Housekeeping’s published testing. It inflated in under two minutes and did not lose air overnight in that test, but its separate pump was loud. Confirm the pump, power requirements, packed size, and exact capacity for the model you plan to take outdoors.
Is a tri-fold mattress better than an air mattress?
A tri-fold mattress is preferable if you want a foldable foam-style bed with no inflation, pump, or air-pressure maintenance. An air mattress is usually the better fit when compact deflated storage and adjustable firmness matter. The Best Choice Products Tri-Fold Mattress is an alternative category, so air-mattress test results do not apply to it.
What is the best air mattress for a child?
The Shrunks Travel Bed is the child-specific recommendation in this guide, available in toddler and twin sizes with perimeter bumpers, a low profile, and a sheet-tucking slot. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model, including age, size, occupancy, and supervision requirements. Do not substitute an adult air mattress based only on its advertised capacity.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: SoundAsleep Dream Series is the best overall choice according to both Good Housekeeping and Forbes Vetted’s published testing. Choose Intex for value, Serta for powered overnight pressure maintenance, Coleman for camping, Shrunks for a child-specific travel bed, or a tri-fold mattress if you do not want an inflatable product. Verify the exact SKU before buying, and treat any overnight softness first as possible material stretch—not automatic proof of a leak.
