The Analy Community Makerspace was a school-based workshop created in a converted shop-class building at Analy High School in Sebastopol, California. At its 2012 opening, it brought traditional woodworking and metalworking equipment together with digital fabrication and electronics activities, while connecting the school’s Project MAKE class with families and other community members. Available reporting describes the space at that time; it does not establish whether it is still operating.
What the Analy Community Makerspace was
Analy High School teacher Casey Shea and students transformed the school’s old wood shop into a makerspace. The facility was also associated with Project MAKE, a high school class focused on making. Make’s November 16, 2012 report described the opening, while AnnMarie Thomas’s September 7, 2012 Edutopia account placed the work in an educational context.
The approach treated building as a way to learn across subjects. Thomas described furniture dimensions as an opportunity to use algebra and geometry, and sewn soft circuits as a way to connect electronics with programming. The workshop therefore joined hands-on construction with problem-solving rather than limiting making to a single tool or discipline.
Tools and activities reported at the 2012 opening
Make’s opening report described a mix of equipment inherited from the former shop class and newer fabrication tools. Students demonstrated projects and equipment, and visitors could try hands-on activities.

How it connected the school and community
The opening brought together students, families, mentors, and makers of different ages. Make reported that the space was expected to host classes for community members beginning in January, but the passage does not identify the year for that January. It should be understood as an opening-era plan, not a current schedule or confirmation that public classes took place.

Its current operating status is unverified in the sources described here. The 2012 opening coverage documents what the facility was and how it was presented at the time, but does not confirm whether it remains open, changed names, or continued as part of another program. A 2022 Sebastopol Times calendar listing for a Chimera Arts makerspace event documents a separate local event; it does not establish a connection to the Analy facility.

For construction and education readers, the documented legacy is the conversion itself: a school shop was adapted for collaborative work spanning traditional tools, digital fabrication, electronics, and student-led projects. The historical account is useful as an example of a school-based makerspace, but it cannot answer present-day questions about visiting, classes, or equipment.
