From Daniel Halladay’s self-regulating design in 1854 to steel-bladed mills that could run unattended, its evolution made dependable water available to farms, ranches and railway stops. Rural electrification later displaced much of the market for wind-powered pumps.
What made Halladay’s windmill different?
Daniel Halladay’s 1854 design addressed a basic problem: a mill needed to turn into the wind and cope with changing wind strength without someone constantly adjusting its sails. As Dave Mowitz recounts in Successful Farming’s 2024 history, Halladay used a weighted mechanism to reduce sail area as wind strengthened. Automatic regulation meant the mill could operate without an attendant continually tending it.
The feature quotes a report in the Tolland County Gazette saying the “Halladay Wind-Mill” ran for six months “without a hand being touched to it to regulate the sails.” That is a newspaper passage relayed by Mowitz; it is not attributed to a named speaker in the feature.
How did a farm windmill pump water?
The wheel captured wind and turned a shaft. Gearing and a crankshaft converted that rotary motion into a repeated up-and-down stroke, carried down a rod to a pump cylinder in the well. The pump’s reciprocating action lifted water for farm or ranch use. Some designs used back gearing, allowing several wheel turns for each pumping cycle and making operation easier in light wind.

Windmills were also used at railway water stops and, in some configurations, to power equipment such as feed or sawmills. Their value was practical: they could supply water or mechanical power where other infrastructure was limited.
How did windmill designs change?
From cloth sails to steel blades
Early sails made of cloth gave way to wooden blades and then steel. Closely spaced, curved metal blades formed a high-solidity wheel: it could turn relatively slowly while producing useful torque, including in lighter winds. According to Mowitz, galvanized steel construction appeared in 1876 and became common in the 1890s. Factory-made, standardized parts and weather-resistant construction helped bring complete mills to market at lower cost.

Vane-controlled and vaneless mills
Many mills used a vane and tail to orient the wheel toward the wind. Mowitz describes the vane positioning the wheel in lighter conditions and shifting as wind speed increased. Other manufacturers offered vaneless designs: their wheels faced downwind and used blades that folded as wind conditions changed. These are broad descriptions of historical types, not instructions for inspecting or repairing a particular mill.
Direct stroke and back gearing
Windmills differed in how wheel rotation drove the pump rod. A direct-stroke arrangement transferred the wheel’s motion to the pumping stroke more directly; a back-geared arrangement allowed multiple wheel rotations per pump cycle. The latter could make pumping easier in light wind. The exact mechanism varied by model.

How large did the windmill industry become?
Mowitz reports that an estimated 400 companies were making windmills by the 1870s. Among the suppliers he names are U.S. Wind Engine and Pump Company, Challenge Wind Mill and Feed Mill Company, Appleton Manufacturing Company, Star, Eclipse, Fairbanks-Morse, Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company and Aermotor Windmill Company.
The feature estimates that about 600,000 windmills were operating in 1930. It also says Aermotor produced more than 20,000 mills a year in the early 1900s and introduced a self-oiling windmill in 1915. These are figures reported by the 2024 feature; it does not identify the underlying datasets for the company and national estimates.

Why did wind-powered water pumping decline?
Rural electrification, beginning in the late 1920s and continuing through the 1930s, brought electric water pumps that the feature characterizes as cheaper and more dependable. As farms gained access to electricity, demand for windmill pumps fell sharply. Some manufacturers closed; others diversified. The change was not that windmills stopped working, but that a new power source made water pumping less dependent on local wind and mechanical upkeep.
Where can surviving American windmills be seen?
Mowitz’s feature points to the American Windmill Museum in Lubbock, Texas, and the Mid-America Windmill Museum in Kendallville, Indiana. Those are collection destinations named in the 2024 article; check each museum directly for current hours, exhibits and visitor information.
