There is no single best electric skillet for every kitchen. The right choice depends on whether you need a compact personal pan, a large extra burner, precise low-temperature control, a transportable serving dish, or cookware without intentionally added PFAS or PTFE.

For most households, the Beautiful 5-in-1 12-inch detachable skillet is the strongest all-around choice because it combines useful cooking modes, a deep 7-quart pan, detachable cleanup, and a relatively low observed price. Choose the Presto Precise Tuxedo 07118 if low-temperature precision matters more than price, the Presto 06856 for a straightforward large family skillet, or the bella Make & Take for potlucks and transporting food.

Scope and price note: These are U.S. 120-volt models. Prices, colors, stock, shipping restrictions, and retailer availability were checked against public pages on August 10, 2026, and can change. Confirm the exact model number and current checkout status before buying.

Best classic large skillet Presto 16-inch Ceramic Electric Skillet 06856 $74.99 16-inch base; 1,500 watts Adjustable thermostat; ceramic nonstick inside and out Measure the counter, sink, cabinet, and storage shelf before ordering.
Best premium ceramic GreenPan Elite 5.5-Quart Oval Electric Skillet $249.99 5.5 quarts; 1,800 watts Up to 450°F; PFAS-free Thermolon Volt ceramic nonstick GreenPan’s page showed the model temporarily out of stock when checked.
Best programmable one-pot skillet GreenPan Multifunction Deep Electric Skillet $249.99 6 quarts; 1,800 watts Up to 450°F; PFAS-free Thermolon Volt coating; LCD and 10 presets Presets add convenience but do not guarantee better cooking than manual control.
Best premium stainless-steel option All-Clad Stainless Steel Electric Nonstick Skillet SK492D50 $249.99 sale; $299.99 listed regular price 7 quarts; 14.8 by 18.6 by 6.9 inches; 13.23 pounds Up to 450°F; PTFE nonstick interior Official shipping restrictions were listed for Colorado, Maine, and Minnesota.
Best for transporting food bella Make & Take Electric Skillet Check current listing 12 by 12 inches; 3 inches deep Warm to 400°F; EverGood ceramic coating claimed free of PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, lead, and cadmium Locking clamps hold the inverted lid in place, but that does not establish that the pan is leakproof.
Best large skillet for storage Elite Gourmet EG4403 Stow-Away Foldable Electric Skillet $47.99 15 by 12 inches; approximately 3.05 inches deep; advertised as 10 quarts; 1,500 watts 200°F to 450°F; PFAS-free Ceralast ceramic coating Use the EG4403 model number and physical dimensions because capacity labels vary across listings.
Best budget deep skillet Elite Gourmet EG2313 Ceralast Electric Skillet $29.99 12 by 12 inches; 3 inches deep; advertised as 10.5 quarts; 1,200 watts 200°F to 450°F; PFAS-free Ceralast ceramic coating The advertised quart capacity does not align neatly with the stated dimensions, so treat it as approximate.

Food Network reports hands-on testing of 15 electric skillets, including fried eggs, pancakes, and Salisbury steak, and names seven winners. That testing supports several picks above, including Beautiful, bella, GreenPan Elite, All-Clad, and Elite Gourmet. The Presto Tuxedo and newer Elite Gourmet Ceralast models are included here based primarily on their current manufacturer specifications and manuals rather than publicly documented independent testing. See the Food Network testing and review for the independent comparison.

What an electric skillet is—and what it is not

An electric skillet is a countertop pan with an integrated electric heating element and a thermostat or digital controller. Most include a lid and a detachable temperature probe or power cord. Plug it into a suitable outlet, set the temperature, and the thermostat cycles the element to maintain the selected range.

#1 Best Overall
Elite Gourmet 12" Ceralast™ PFAS-Free Ceramic Electric Skillet, 1200W
  • DISHWASHER SAFE and fully immersible in your sink for fast, easy clean-up upon removal of the temperature control probe. Thick cast aluminum body resists rusting or warping for added resilience.
  • PFAS FREE CERAMIC COATING: Safer and faster-heating than traditional ceramic surfaces, it provides a healthier, stronger, and scratch-resistant cooking surface. Food releases easily without chipping, making cleanup quick, safe, and hassle-free.
  • RAPID + EVEN HEAT from the fully embedded heating element. The Easy-Release control probe can pinpoint precise temperatures of 250-450°F degrees and prevents hot spots and scorched food.
  • LOCK IN FLAVORS and moisture and view cooking progress with the tempered glass lid. Extra Large 12” x 12” pan dimensions let you cook entire meals for the whole family.
  • SIMPLIFY MEALTIME Enjoy a delicious breakfast of fluffy pancakes, lunch of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches or dinner with flavorful stir fried veggies. Serves up to 6 people.

That makes an electric skillet an independent cooking surface, not simply a frying pan with a cord. It can free a burner during a holiday meal, add capacity in a small kitchen, or provide a lidded deep pan in a dorm, RV, office, or temporary home where a suitable 120-volt outlet is available.

  • Traditional electric skillet: Uses a manual dial or thermostat. It is usually the simplest and least expensive design.
  • Digital precision skillet: Adds a display, exact temperature selection, presets, and sometimes specialty functions such as poaching, proofing, yogurt, or sous vide.
  • Deep electric skillet: Has higher sidewalls and is better suited to soups, sauces, braises, casseroles, steaming, and one-pot meals.
  • Electric griddle: Usually shallow and broad, intended for pancakes, eggs, bacon, burgers, and grilled sandwiches. It is not a direct substitute for a deep skillet.
  • Multicooker: May add pressure cooking, rice cooking, slow cooking, or other functions. Do not automatically count every multicooker as an electric skillet.

The nine best electric skillets

1. Beautiful 5-in-1 12-inch Detachable Electric Skillet: best overall

Best for: Most families, extra cooking capacity, buffet serving, and shoppers seeking a current ceramic-coated model at a moderate price.

The current Walmart listing for this specific 12-by-12-inch detachable variant gives it a 7-quart capacity, 4-inch depth, 1,500-watt system, detachable pan, and five functions: sauté, steam, simmer, slow cook, and buffet serve. The listing says its EverGood coating contains no intentionally added PFAS, PTFE, PFOA, lead, or cadmium. The observed price was $49.97.

Its appeal is practical rather than narrowly specialized. The deep pan and lid handle family-size one-pan meals, while the detachable design is easier to wash and can make the appliance more useful as a serving vessel. The steaming function and included rack are particularly useful for dumplings, vegetables, and seafood. Food Network’s tested Beautiful 5-in-1 model was praised for its steaming rack and lid rest, but the tested configuration was described broadly and was listed at about $70. Do not assume every Beautiful-branded skillet has the same dimensions or accessories.

Limitations: The advertised cooking functions do not turn it into a pressure cooker or oven. Do not put the electrical base in an oven, and do not deep-fry unless the exact manual expressly permits it. Verify the current Walmart listing, dimensions, and included accessories before purchase.

2. Presto Precise Tuxedo 07118: best for digital temperature precision

Best for: Poaching, yogurt, proofing, sous vide-style cooking, holding food at serving temperature, and cooks who need more control than a dial provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Presto 07118 allows settings from 100°F to 400°F. It changes in one-degree increments from 100°F through 205°F and five-degree increments above 205°F. It has a 12-inch cooking area, 1,100 watts, PFAS-free ceramic nonstick, and a rack for steaming and sous vide applications. The observed manufacturer price was $139.99.

This is the most differentiated product in the group for low-temperature work. A conventional dial marked with broad numbers may be adequate for browning or simmering but is a poor tool when a recipe calls for a narrow low-temperature range. The Tuxedo’s digital setpoint makes those recipes easier to repeat.

Limitations: A displayed setting is not the same as an independently measured surface temperature. The appliance is also more expensive and electronically complex than a basic thermostat skillet. Follow the 07118 manual for cleaning, immersion, rack use, and specialty cooking limits; never immerse the controller, cord, or plug.

3. Presto 06856 16-inch Ceramic Electric Skillet: best classic large skillet

Best for: Families, holiday cooking, buffet service, casseroles, and anyone who wants a large, conventional skillet without paying premium-appliance prices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Presto 06856 has a 16-inch base, 1,500 watts, heavy cast-aluminum construction, ceramic nonstick inside and out, a tempered-glass cover, and a removable heat control. Presto says the pan is fully immersible after the heat control is removed and lists a one-year limited warranty.

The large rectangular cooking area is useful when several pieces of chicken, burgers, pancakes, or a substantial casserole must cook at the same time. Its straightforward thermostat is easier to understand and potentially easier to replace than a more elaborate digital system.

Limitations: Sixteen inches is genuinely large. Measure the full exterior—not just the cooking surface—against your counter, sink, cabinet, and storage shelf. The manual also says this model is not intended for deep-frying. Do not move the skillet while it contains hot oil or hot liquid; if movement is unavoidable, use extreme caution and plan the placement before cooking.

4. GreenPan Elite 5.5-Quart Oval: best premium ceramic skillet

Best for: Shoppers who want a premium ceramic-coated insert, a family-sized oval shape, rapid searing, and dishwasher-safe removable parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon Basics Electric Skillet and Frying Pan with Glass Lid, Nonstick Ceramic Coating, Adjustable Temperature Control, 15.6 x 12.1 x 6.9 inch, Black
  • GENEROUS COOKING SURFACE: 12 x 12 inch cooking area provides ample space for family meals
  • NONSTICK CERAMIC: Durable, safe ceramic coating ensures effortless food release and easy cleaning, dishwasher safe skillet and glass lid
  • ADJUSTABLE TEMPERATURE: Precise temperature control from 200-400°F with removable temperature probe for versatile cooking options
  • TEMPERED GLASS LID: See-through lid traps in heat and moisture while making it easy to monitor cooking progress
  • COOL-TOUCH HANDLES: Side handles stay cool for safe and comfortable lifting and carrying

The GreenPan Elite has a removable 5.5-quart cast-aluminum pan, an embedded heating element, one-touch sear control, 1,800 watts, and temperature control up to 450°F. GreenPan identifies the coating as PFAS-free Thermolon Volt ceramic nonstick. It says the pan and lid are dishwasher-safe and provides a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.

The oval shape can provide useful room for elongated foods and family portions, while the dedicated sear setting is intended to make high-heat browning simpler. The premium price is justified only if those features, the construction, warranty, and cleanup convenience matter to you; a less expensive analog skillet can perform the same basic sautéing and simmering tasks.

Availability warning: GreenPan’s product page showed the Elite temporarily out of stock when checked. Treat it as an availability-dependent recommendation and verify a retailer before publication or purchase.

5. GreenPan Multifunction Deep Electric Skillet: best programmable one-pot skillet

Best for: One-pot meals, soups, sauces, rice, grains, steaming, braising, and cooks who prefer documented cooking presets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 6-quart GreenPan Multifunction Deep includes a removable pot, LCD display, 1,800 watts, a maximum temperature of 450°F, PFAS-free Thermolon Volt coating, and a four-hour cooking limit. Its 10 documented presets are stir-fry, sauce, soup, steam, simmer, warm, sear/sauté, white rice, brown rice, and grains. GreenPan says both the pot and lid are dishwasher-safe.

This is a better fit than a shallow skillet when the recipe contains substantial liquid. The useful distinction is not simply that it has many buttons; the manufacturer describes what the presets are for. That makes the controls more meaningful than an unexplained multi-function label.

Limitations: Presets are convenience settings, not proof that the appliance cooks more evenly or accurately than a manual skillet. Its 1,800-watt load also deserves attention in an RV, dorm, older kitchen, or shared circuit. At $249.99 observed, it is a substantial purchase for cooks who will use only sauté and warm.

6. All-Clad SK492D50 7-quart Stainless Steel Electric Skillet: best premium stainless-steel option

Best for: Buyers who prioritize stainless-steel exterior construction, large capacity, presentation, and a premium conventional nonstick skillet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The All-Clad SK492D50 has a 7-quart capacity, stainless-steel body, riveted handles, a maximum temperature of 450°F, and a conventional nonstick interior that All-Clad explicitly identifies as PTFE. It weighs 13.23 pounds and measures 14.8 by 18.6 by 6.9 inches. All-Clad says the body and lid are dishwasher-safe once the electrical probe is removed.

This is the premium choice for shoppers who specifically want stainless-steel presentation and a substantial large pan, not for someone seeking PFAS- or PTFE-free cookware. Its observed special price was $249.99 against a listed regular price of $299.99.

Important purchase restriction: The official product page listed shipping restrictions to Colorado, Maine, and Minnesota. Check the destination policy before relying on the manufacturer’s page or assuming the same retailer terms apply everywhere.

7. bella Make & Take Electric Skillet: best for transporting food

Best for: Potlucks, tailgating, RV use, buffet service, and anyone who needs to carry the pan and lid together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bella Make & Take is a 12-inch-square, 3-inch-deep skillet with a cast-aluminum base, cool-touch handles, cord storage, and a lid that inverts over the pan and locks with clamps. The control runs from warm to 400°F. bella says the EverGood ceramic coating is made without PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, lead, and cadmium.

The locking-lid design solves a real problem: how to take a hot or recently cooked dish to another location without carrying a loose glass lid separately. Plan the route and cooling time carefully, however. A lid that locks in place is not automatically leakproof, and the dossier provides no evidence that the closed skillet can safely transport a full amount of soup or hot oil.

Rank #3
Elite Gourmet 10.5Qt Nonstick Electric Skillet, Extra-Deep 16"x13"
  • EFFORTLESS CLEAN-UP: Fully immersible in your sink after removing the temperature control probe. The dishwasher-safe skillet and glass lid (top rack) make after-meal cleanup fast. Thick cast aluminum body resists rust and warping for lasting durability. Scratch-resistant surface holds up to everyday use — use wooden, silicone, nylon, or plastic utensils to preserve the non-stick coating.
  • HONEYCOMB NON-STICK COATING: Marbleized stone-finish surface releases food effortlessly with long-lasting durability. Scratch-resistant surface holds up to everyday use — use wooden, silicone, nylon, or plastic utensils to preserve the non-stick coating.
  • RAPID, EVEN HEAT: Fully embedded M-shaped heating element covers the entire pan floor for consistent heat with no hot spots. Precision trigger-release temperature probe adjusts from 200°F to 400°F and cycles automatically to hold your exact setting. On first use, let the skillet heat and cycle 2–3 times before adding food for accurate temperature distribution.
  • XL 16" x 13" DEEP PAN: 3.15" high sidewalls and a tempered glass vented lid lock in moisture and reduce splatter while you monitor cooking. Integrated easy-pour spout lets you drain excess juices cleanly. Perfect for frying chicken, roasting, braising, and one-pot meals. Allow the lid to cool before placing it on a cold surface to prevent thermal shock.
  • FAMILY-SIZED 10.5 QUART: Serves 6 to 8 people. Cook pancakes, stir-fry, grilled cheese, casseroles, eggs, and more — all in one pan. Temperature range of 200°F–400°F handles everything from a low simmer to a high sear.

Limitations: Confirm the cleaning instructions for the exact current variant. Never immerse the electrical control, cord, or plug, and do not move a full skillet containing hot liquid unless the manual specifically addresses that use.

8. Elite Gourmet EG4403 Stow-Away: best large skillet for storage

Best for: Large meals in kitchens where cabinet space is limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Elite Gourmet EG4403 combines a large 15-by-12-inch pan with folding handles. The manufacturer lists approximately 3.05 inches of depth, a 10-quart capacity, 1,500 watts, temperature control from 200°F to 450°F, a PFAS-free Ceralast ceramic coating, and dishwasher-safe pan and lid after the temperature probe is removed. Elite Gourmet estimates that it serves six to eight people.

The folding design is the reason to choose it over a similarly sized fixed-handle skillet. It reduces the handle footprint for storage, although the pan itself still requires room. The 15-by-12-inch dimensions matter more than the marketing word stow-away: measure the actual folded unit and the shelf where it will live.

Capacity warning: Retailer and manufacturer titles use overlapping capacity labels for similar Elite Gourmet products. Use model EG4403 and its stated physical dimensions when comparing it with other skillets, and treat the 10-quart figure as an advertised capacity rather than guaranteed usable cooking volume.

9. Elite Gourmet EG2313 Ceralast: best budget deep skillet

Best for: Budget-conscious cooks who want a deep, ceramic-coated skillet for four- to six-person meals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Elite Gourmet EG2313 is listed at $29.99 and has a 12-by-12-inch, 3-inch-deep pan, 1,200 watts, a 200°F-to-450°F control range, cast-aluminum construction, and a PFAS-free Ceralast ceramic coating. Elite Gourmet says the pan and lid are dishwasher-safe after the probe is removed and estimates four to six servings.

It is an attractive value if you need depth for sauces, shallow frying, braises, or one-pan dinners but do not need digital controls. The low price also makes it a reasonable extra burner for occasional entertaining.

Capacity warning: The product title calls it 10.5 quarts even though the page gives 12-by-12-by-3-inch dimensions. Similar Elite Gourmet listings use different capacity labels, so do not compare the quart numbers as if they were standardized internal volumes.

How to choose the right size

Advertised quart capacity can be misleading. A deep, narrow pan may hold more liquid but offer less surface area for browning than a wide, shallow pan. Compare the cooking dimensions, outside dimensions, depth, handle clearance, and lid shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approximate size Practical use What to watch
About 8 to 8.5 inches Personal portions, eggs, grilled cheese, and one- or two-person meals Limited browning space and little room for leftovers
10.5 to 12 inches; roughly 4 to 6 quarts The most practical range for couples and small families Check whether the stated diameter describes the base or the rim
14 to 16 inches; roughly 6 to 10 quarts Family meals, entertaining, casseroles, and buffet service Large footprint, heavier cleaning, and more demanding storage
10 quarts and above Large gatherings and high-volume cooking Advertised capacity may not equal usable volume; check circuit load and sink size

For context, Elite Gourmet’s EGL-6101 personal skillet is listed at 8.5 inches and 650 watts. It is a fundamentally different tool from the 16-inch, 1,500-watt Presto 06856 or 1,800-watt GreenPan models.

Temperature control: what the numbers mean

Approximate cooking targets are useful, but dial markings are not interchangeable between brands. Food Network notes that electric-skillet controls vary and that some lowest settings can be difficult to control. Use the settings as starting points, then adjust based on the food and the specific appliance.

Cooking task Approximate target Important qualification
Keep warm or buffet service About 170°F to 200°F Model-dependent; food-safety holding requirements still apply
Gentle simmer About 200°F to 250°F Actual liquid temperature depends on food volume, lid use, and thermostat cycling
Sautéing About 300°F to 375°F Preheat behavior and recovery vary by pan and load
Pancakes and grilled sandwiches About 325°F to 375°F Use a lower setting if the coating or food browns too quickly
Browning and searing About 400°F to 450°F A maximum setting does not prove uniform surface temperature
Poaching, proofing, yogurt, or sous vide-style work Use only a model that explicitly supports the required low range The Presto Tuxedo is the clearest fit among these recommendations

The Presto Tuxedo is materially different from a conventional dial because it permits exact selections from 100°F to 400°F, with finer increments at lower temperatures. That is useful control; it is not a claim that every point on the cooking surface stays exactly at the displayed number.

Does wattage determine performance?

Wattage indicates electrical input, not automatically cooking quality. A higher-wattage skillet may heat or recover more quickly, but pan size, element placement, thermostat behavior, insulation, and the amount of food also matter. A large pan with too little power may struggle when heavily loaded, while a small personal pan does not need 1,800 watts.

Elite Gourmet 2.5Qt Compact Nonstick Electric Skillet, 8"x8", 600W
  • MULTI-LAYER NON-STICK COATING: Scratch-resistant dual non-stick layers over dual primer coats bond to a heavy cast aluminum body. Food releases cleanly, cleanup is fast, and the surface outlasts single-coat pans. Wooden or silicone utensils only.
  • REMOVABLE THERMOSTAT, 200°F–400°F: Dial from a low simmer to a 400°F sear. The indicator light confirms your set temperature is held. Detach the probe when cooking is done and bring the skillet cord-free straight to the table.
  • 8"x8" SQUARE PAN, 4" DEEP SIDES, 2.5-QT CAPACITY: Square shape maximizes usable cooking surface. Deep sides contain splatters and accommodate one-pot pastas, braised meats, and stir-fries. Compact enough for dorm rooms, RVs, and small kitchens.
  • DISHWASHER SAFE SKILLET & GLASS LID: Remove the probe, load the skillet base and vented tempered glass lid into the dishwasher, and you're done. Cool-touch handles, rust-resistant lacquered body, ETL certified 600W/120V.
  • COOKS EVERYTHING: Fry, sauté, sear, simmer, steam, slow cook. Bacon and eggs for breakfast, grilled cheese for lunch, chicken stir-fry for dinner. A great housewarming or college gift. Backed by a 1-Year Limited Warranty.
  • 650 watts: Elite Gourmet EGL-6101 personal skillet.
  • 1,000 watts: Presto 11-inch 06620.
  • 1,100 watts: Presto Tuxedo 07118.
  • 1,200 watts: Elite Gourmet EG2313.
  • 1,500 watts: Presto 06856 and Elite Gourmet EG4403.
  • 1,800 watts: GreenPan Elite and GreenPan Multifunction Deep.

At 120 volts, an 1,800-watt appliance draws approximately 15 amps using the formula watts divided by volts. That is a calculation from the listed ratings, not a manufacturer claim. It makes circuit awareness important in older kitchens, dorms, RVs, and any location where another high-draw appliance shares the circuit. Check the outlet, circuit capacity, extension-cord restrictions, and site rules. Do not assume a 1,800-watt skillet can be used interchangeably with a 650-watt personal model.

Ceramic, PTFE, PFAS-free, and PFOA-free coatings

Ceramic coatings

Most cookware sold as ceramic nonstick is a ceramic-based coating over a metal pan; it is not a solid ceramic skillet. GreenPan, bella, Presto, and the newer Elite Gourmet Ceralast models make PFAS-free or PFAS/PTFE-free claims for specific products.

Ceramic is the logical choice for shoppers who specifically want to avoid PTFE or fluoropolymer coatings. However, do not assume that a ceramic coating lasts longer, is independently proven healthier, or is impervious to damage. Those claims require evidence beyond a product description. Treat terms such as non-toxic or healthy as manufacturer marketing unless supported by a precise third-party standard.

PTFE coatings

PTFE is the conventional fluoropolymer used in many nonstick coatings. The All-Clad SK492D50 explicitly identifies PTFE on its product page. That makes it unsuitable for a shopper whose requirement is PTFE-free cookware, but it is not accurate to describe every PTFE-coated pan as automatically dangerous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FDA’s explanation of PFAS in food says approved polymerized PFAS substances used in some nonstick food-contact coatings are tightly bound in the coating, and studies show negligible migration capable of entering food under approved use conditions. That does not make every coating, product, or use condition identical. It does mean shoppers should distinguish evidence-based product disclosure from blanket claims that all nonstick cookware is either unsafe or risk-free.

How to shop by coating

  • Decide whether avoiding PTFE is a personal preference, a household requirement, or not a deciding factor.
  • Do not confuse PFOA-free, PFAS-free, and PTFE-free. They are not interchangeable claims.
  • Do not overheat an empty nonstick pan.
  • Use the utensils, heat limits, and cleaning methods specified by the manufacturer.
  • Avoid metal utensils, abrasive cleaners, stacking heavy cookware on the surface, and empty high-heat preheating.
  • Replace a coating that is badly peeling or flaking, or that no longer releases food properly.

Dishwasher safety depends on the component

Dishwasher-safe does not mean that the entire assembled appliance can go into the dishwasher. The electrical base, probe, cord, and plug must stay dry unless the exact manual says otherwise.

Product or product family Pan Lid Base, cord, or probe
GreenPan Elite GreenPan says dishwasher-safe GreenPan says dishwasher-safe Wipe the electrical base with a damp cloth
GreenPan Multifunction Deep GreenPan says dishwasher-safe GreenPan says dishwasher-safe Wipe the electrical base; do not immerse it
All-Clad SK492D50 Dishwasher-safe after removing the electrical probe Dishwasher-safe Remove and keep the probe dry
Presto 06856 ceramic Immersible after removing the heat control Follow the model manual Never immerse the heat control, cord, or plug
Elite Gourmet Ceralast models Dishwasher-safe after removing the temperature probe; the EG2615 instructions specify top-rack cleaning Dishwasher-safe according to the product pages Remove the probe before washing
bella Make & Take Verify the manual for the exact current variant Verify the manual for the exact current variant Never immerse the electrical control, cord, or plug

For every model, disconnect the power, allow the pan to cool, remove the probe or controller, and follow the manual rather than relying on a retailer’s generic dishwasher icon.

Can an electric skillet go in the oven?

Do not assume that it can. Most electric skillets are not oven-rated. Food Network notes that some models can perform stovetop-style baking under a lid, but that is different from placing the pan in an oven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Stovetop-style baking: A covered skillet cooks cornbread, cake, pizza, or a casserole with controlled heat from below.
  • Oven-safe pan: The manufacturer explicitly rates the entire pan for oven use.
  • Electrical base: Usually not oven-safe and should never enter an oven unless the manual expressly permits it.

Unless the exact instruction manual provides an oven temperature rating and explains whether the probe and base must be removed, keep the complete electric skillet on the countertop.

Can an electric skillet deep-fry?

Many electric skillets can sauté, pan-fry, or shallow-fry. That does not mean they are suitable for deep-frying. A shallow pan can overflow, hot oil is difficult to move safely, and the thermostat and manual may prohibit deep oil.

Use this rule: do not deep-fry unless the exact instruction manual expressly permits it and specifies the oil capacity. The Presto 06856 manual explicitly says that model is not intended for deep-frying. Food Network likewise warns that some skillets are too shallow for deep oil and that overfilling is unsafe.

Can the pan be used on a stovetop?

Only if the manufacturer specifically designs it for stovetop use. A removable pan is not automatically burner-safe; its base may contain electrical components or may not be rated for direct flame, radiant heat, or induction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The notable exception is the Zojirushi EP-PBC10. Its removable cooking pan is designed for direct use on a stovetop burner. It has a 10.5-inch cooking surface, 2.25-inch depth, 176°F-to-430°F range, 1,300 watts, and a magnetic power cord. Zojirushi’s official store showed it out of stock when checked, so it is an alternate to watch for rather than a dependable buy-now recommendation.

Features worth paying for

Prioritize features that solve a real handling or cleaning problem:

  • Removable temperature probe or cord.
  • Magnetic or quick-release cord.
  • Detachable pan.

  • Digital display and documented presets.
  • Replacement probes, lids, and other parts.

Do not award points merely because a product lists many modes. The Presto Tuxedo is a meaningful multi-function choice because its manufacturer documents poaching, yogurt, proofing, and sous vide uses. A product that only adds a timer or unexplained buttons is not automatically more capable.

Are electric skillets worth buying?

They are worth it when you need:

  • Extra capacity for holidays, parties, or buffet service.
  • A separate cooking surface in a small kitchen with limited burners.
  • Cooking equipment for a dorm, RV, office, or temporary home with a suitable 120-volt outlet.
  • A lidded pan that can cook and serve at the table.
  • One-pan meals without occupying a stovetop burner.
  • A deep pan with independent temperature control.

They are less compelling when you:

  • Already have enough burners and no convenient storage space.
  • Expect high-heat wok cooking or restaurant-style searing.
  • Need oven-based casseroles.
  • Regularly cook batches too large for one countertop pan.
  • Expect one appliance to replace an induction cooktop, oven, slow cooker, rice cooker, and deep fryer at the same time.

An electric skillet is best understood as an extra, portable cooking surface with a lid—not a universal kitchen replacement.

Key trade-offs

Large versus compact

Large pans cook more food but are heavier, harder to wash, and more difficult to store. The Presto 06856 is a 16-inch appliance; the Elite Gourmet EGL-6101 is a personal 8.5-inch, 650-watt skillet. Choose based on the food you actually cook, not the largest capacity available.

Analog versus digital

Analog controls are generally less expensive and simpler. Digital controls offer finer settings and specialty programs, but they add electronic complexity and may make replacement parts or repairs more difficult.

Deep versus wide

Deep skillets suit stews, sauces, casseroles, steaming, and shallow frying. Wide, shallower surfaces are better for pancakes, burgers, eggs, grilled sandwiches, and browning several pieces at once.

Ceramic versus PTFE

Ceramic is the straightforward choice for shoppers avoiding PFAS or PTFE claims. PTFE can provide very slick food release and is not automatically unsafe when used according to the product’s directions. This is a preference and disclosure decision, not a reason to make an unsupported universal safety verdict.

Removable pan versus fixed pan

A removable insert is usually easier to clean and may double as serveware. A fixed pan can feel structurally simple. Neither design alone proves superior durability or more even heating.

Maximum heat versus practical heat

A stated 450°F maximum does not prove that the entire cooking surface reaches 450°F evenly. That conclusion requires independent surface-temperature measurements, which should not be inferred from a product page.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact SKU. Record the model number, not merely the brand and size. Beautiful, Presto, Elite Gourmet, and GreenPan all sell variants with similar names.
  2. Measure the complete appliance. Include handles, the electrical probe, lid, and clearance needed to remove the cover.
  3. Compare physical cooking dimensions. Treat quart numbers as approximate when a listing’s capacity does not match its stated length, width, and depth.
  4. Match the controls to the food. A dial is sufficient for sautéing and simmering; choose digital precision for low-temperature specialty cooking.
  5. Check the coating disclosure. Determine whether the claim is PFAS-free, PTFE-free, PFOA-free, or only no intentionally added substances.
  6. Read the cleaning section of the manual. Verify whether the pan, lid, and probe are dishwasher-safe separately.
  7. Confirm restrictions. Look for instructions about ovens, stovetops, deep-frying, outdoor use, hot liquids, and extension cords.
  8. Check electrical demand. An 1,800-watt model is approximately a 15-amp load at 120 volts.
  9. Check support. Look for warranty coverage and replacement lids, probes, or controls before buying a model you expect to use for years.
  10. Verify price and stock immediately before checkout. A displayed price can coexist with sold-out status, temporary unavailability, or geographic shipping restrictions.

Safety and care rules

  • Use the skillet on a stable, heat-resistant surface with room around the controls and lid.
  • Do not immerse the electrical probe, cord, plug, or base.
  • Disconnect power and let the pan cool before removing the probe or cleaning.
  • Do not move a skillet containing hot oil or hot liquid. Presto’s manual specifically warns against moving the 06856 in that condition.
  • Do not use an empty nonstick pan at high heat.
  • Avoid metal utensils, abrasive cleaners, and heavy cookware stacked on the coating.
  • Keep steam, splatter, and condensation away from outlets, cords, cabinets, and electronics.
  • A standard countertop skillet is not automatically outdoor-rated. Use one outdoors only if the exact manual permits it, and keep the appliance dry and protected from rain and moisture.
  • Inspect the cord and probe before each use. Do not use damaged electrical components.
  • Do not infer oven safety, stovetop compatibility, or deep-frying capability from a detachable pan or a high temperature number.

Models worth watching but not primary picks

Availability and variant clarity kept several recognizable products out of the main nine, even though some may be excellent fits when available.

  • Zojirushi EP-PBC10: A compelling option because its removable pan is designed for stovetop use and it has a magnetic cord, but the official store showed it out of stock when checked.
  • Presto 06857 Foldaway: A strong storage-oriented design, but Presto’s page listed it as temporarily unavailable.
  • Dash 14-inch Ceramic Family Size Skillet: A potentially attractive 6-quart ceramic option, but Dash’s official page showed it sold out.
  • Cuisinart electric skillets: Cuisinart’s current category showed no available products, while its discontinued category lists older electric-skillet models.
  • NESCO 8-inch skillet: Food Network reported poor results in its testing, including burned, under-seared, or stuck food, so it is not included among the winners.

Bottom line

Choose the Beautiful 5-in-1 detachable skillet for the best balance of price, depth, capacity, functions, and a manufacturer-listed PFAS/PTFE-free coating claim. Choose the Presto Tuxedo 07118 when low-temperature control is the priority, the Presto 06856 for a large traditional family skillet, the GreenPan Elite for premium ceramic construction when available, and the bella Make & Take when transport matters most.

Before buying, verify the exact model number, physical dimensions, coating terminology, cleaning instructions, electrical load, and restrictions on oven use, stovetop use, deep-frying, and hot-liquid transport. Those details matter more than a generic star rating or an advertised quart number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best electric skillet for most people?

The Beautiful 5-in-1 12-inch detachable skillet is the best all-around choice in this comparison because it combines a 7-quart, 4-inch-deep pan, 1,500 watts, five documented functions, detachable cleanup, and a relatively low observed price. Confirm that the listing is the exact current 12-by-12-inch variant.

What is the best electric skillet for precise low-temperature cooking?

The Presto Precise Tuxedo Digital Precision Skillet 07118. It allows settings from 100°F to 400°F, with one-degree increments from 100°F to 205°F, and documents specialty uses including poaching, yogurt, proofing, and sous vide-style cooking. Its displayed setting is not independent proof of laboratory-grade surface accuracy.

Can an electric skillet go in the oven or deep-fryer?

Do not assume either use is permitted. Most electric skillets are not oven-rated, and a covered pan’s stovetop-style baking is different from oven use. Many models can sauté, pan-fry, or shallow-fry, but deep-frying should be attempted only when the exact manual expressly permits it and specifies the oil capacity.

Are ceramic electric skillets safer than PTFE skillets?

Ceramic is the appropriate choice if you want to avoid PTFE or fluoropolymer coatings, but ceramic does not automatically prove greater durability or health benefits. PTFE is not interchangeable with PFOA or PFAS, and the FDA says approved polymerized PFAS substances in some food-contact nonstick coatings are tightly bound with negligible migration under approved conditions. Follow the coating’s care instructions regardless of type.

What size electric skillet is best for two people?

A 10.5- to 12-inch skillet, roughly 4 to 6 quarts, is the most practical starting range for two people and small families. An 8- to 8.5-inch model is better for personal portions, while 14- to 16-inch models are more useful for entertaining but require substantially more storage and counter space.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Beautiful 5-in-1 detachable 12-inch skillet. Best precision: Presto Tuxedo 07118. Best large classic model: Presto 06856. Best premium ceramic: GreenPan Elite, subject to availability. Best transport design: bella Make & Take.

There is no universal winner. Match the skillet’s physical size, temperature control, coating, wattage, cleanup method, and safety restrictions to the way you actually cook.
