The 8 Best Rain Barrels, According to a Reported 2024 Test Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: The test-based guide reviewed 14 rain barrels over two weeks and named the Good Ideas Impressions Nantucket 50-gallon Plastic Drainable Dual Overflow Planter Rain Barrel its overall pick. It selected the FCMP Outdoor Catalina as runner-up, the FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon as the value pick, and six others for classic, collapsible, urn-style, large-capacity, and elevated designs.

There is an important qualification: the accessible copy of the guide appears to be syndicated or republished, its original publisher could not be independently verified, and its metadata calls the article a 2024 guide while displaying a July 27, 2026 timestamp. This article therefore reports the guide’s selections rather than claiming firsthand testing by Bettesworth Construction. Current specifications, prices, retailers, and availability should be checked against the exact model before purchase.

What the reported test guide selected

The accessible test-based guide says that 14 models were tested for two weeks. Its eight selections are useful as a starting point, but not every model has enough current manufacturer information available to confirm dimensions, fittings, warranty coverage, or stock. The table below separates the guide’s reported judgments from specifications that need current verification.

Model Guide designation Why it made the list Verify before ordering
Good Ideas Impressions Nantucket 50-gallon Plastic Drainable Dual Overflow Planter Rain Barrel Overall pick The guide reports a 50-gallon capacity, curved wicker-like appearance, dual brass spigots, a built-in planter, good resistance to tipping during heavy rain, and no observed sun discoloration during its reported test. The same guide says the spigots felt somewhat flimsy and the planter area was limited. Confirm the exact SKU, outlet arrangement, dimensions, and included overflow hardware. Current Good Ideas listings broadly corroborate features such as brass spigots, debris screens, planters, flat-back construction on some models, and dual overflows, but related listings do not automatically prove that every feature belongs to this exact model.
FCMP Outdoor Catalina Rain Barrel Runner-up A 45-gallon standalone barrel with a debris screen and hose connection. It is a sensible choice for buyers who want a conventional, self-contained installation. The current Home Depot listing says the barrel should be drained and inverted for winter storage. It also explains that gravity, barrel elevation, and fill level affect hose pressure. Check the current instructions and connector compatibility; the manufacturer or listing does not prescribe one universally suitable commercial stand.
FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon Rain Barrel Value pick The guide identifies this as its value choice, making it worth considering when capacity per dollar is more important than decorative styling. The available authoritative information was not sufficient to verify current dimensions, warranty, included fittings, exact model, or availability. Treat retailer specifications as unconfirmed until they match the precise product label and SKU.
FCMP Outdoor Rain Catcher/Raincatcher 50-gallon rain barrel Classic-design pick This is the traditional rain-barrel choice in the guide. FCMP’s product family is also represented in retailer listings and in Consumer Reports’ rain-barrel coverage, which evaluates capacity, quality, ease of use, and cleaning. Consumer Reports reports that several barrels initially leaked during setup in its evaluation. That does not establish this guide’s ranking or prove that this exact FCMP model leaked, but it is a good reason to inspect every fitting, tighten valves correctly, and perform a water test before relying on the barrel.
VINGLI 50-gallon Collapsible Rain Barrel Collapsible pick The collapsible format is useful where the barrel must be moved, emptied for winter, or stored when garden demand is low. VINGLI’s product page lists 50-, 66-, and 100-gallon collapsible versions. Because that is a seller-controlled source and the guide provides limited testing detail, do not assume a particular frame strength, fabric life, or long-term durability without confirming the current model and instructions.
Gardener’s Supply 50-gallon Rainwater Urn Urn-style pick The urn format is aimed at buyers who want storage that looks more like garden décor than utility equipment. The currently accessible Gardener’s Supply listing is for a 39-gallon rain barrel, not the 50-gallon urn named in the guide. That current listing describes recycled materials, a built-in planter, screened inlet, brass spigot, and UV- and frost-resistant construction, but those details should not be substituted for specifications of the guide’s 50-gallon model.
Good Ideas Impressions 90-gallon Rain Barrel Large-capacity pick The 90-gallon format can reduce how frequently a larger garden needs to be refilled or connected to additional barrels. Verify the exact 90-gallon SKU, footprint, support requirements, overflow fittings, debris screen, UV claims, and whether the planter shown on related Good Ideas products is included. Current related listings, such as the Good Ideas retail range, are not proof of the precise 90-gallon model’s specifications.
Good Ideas 42-gallon Savannah Elevated Garden Rain Saver Decorative pick Its elevated format can make filling a watering can easier and may provide more useful gravity flow than a barrel whose outlet sits at ground level. The guide does not establish a measured pressure improvement. A full elevated barrel is heavy, so verify that the supplied base, ground, and overflow route are stable and that water is directed away from the foundation.

For live inventory, compare the exact model names rather than relying on a generic listing title—for example, a 50-gallon rain barrel, FCMP Catalina rain barrel, collapsible rain barrel, or elevated rain barrel may describe several different versions.

Which type is best for your property?

There is no universally best rain barrel. A useful choice depends less on the product label than on the relationship between the barrel, the roof catchment, the downspout, the garden, and the location where the overflow will go.

#1 Best Overall

  • 50-Gallon Capacity: Provides ample storage for harvested rainwater, ideal for watering gardens, lawns, and plants.
  • Durable Construction: Made from UV-resistant polyethylene for long-lasting durability and protection from the elements. Made of 100% Recycled plastic.
  • Overflow Valve: Built-in overflow valve for managing excess water and the option to connect multiple barrels for increased storage.
  • Convenient Spigot: Easy-to-use plastic spigot for quick and efficient water retrieval.
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to install and maintain, offering a simple, sustainable solution for homeowners.

Choose the Nantucket if appearance and general-purpose use matter most

The Good Ideas Impressions Nantucket is the guide’s overall pick because it combines a decorative curved exterior with a planter, two brass spigots, and dual-overflow features. The guide reports that it remained resistant to tipping during heavy rain and showed no sun discoloration during its test. Those are guide-reported observations, not independently repeated results.

Its limitations are practical: the guide considered the spigots somewhat flimsy and the planter area limited. If you will frequently attach and remove a hose, inspect the fittings and avoid using the spigot as a handle. If the planter is important to you, check its actual planting depth and drainage before assuming it can hold the plants you want.

Choose the Catalina for a conventional standalone barrel

The 45-gallon FCMP Catalina is the straightforward option for a buyer who wants a freestanding unit with a debris screen and hose connection. It is particularly suitable when the downspout and barrel can be aligned without a complicated route.

Do not expect municipal-water pressure from a rain barrel. The Catalina’s retailer information explains that the barrel cannot push water uphill and that flow depends on water level and elevation. A hose running uphill, a nearly empty barrel, or a low outlet will produce weak flow even when the barrel itself is working correctly.

Choose the FreeGarden RAIN if the value designation fits—but verify the product

The guide calls the 55-gallon FreeGarden RAIN its value pick. That makes it a candidate for a larger garden or a buyer prioritizing storage volume over ornamental styling. However, the available research does not establish its current dimensions, fittings, warranty, or stock. Do not buy solely from a marketplace title that happens to use the same name; match the exact model and included hardware.

Choose the FCMP Rain Catcher for a classic appearance

The 50-gallon FCMP Rain Catcher/Raincatcher is the guide’s classic-design selection. It is the kind of barrel that generally makes sense when the visual goal is a recognizable rain barrel rather than an urn or faux planter.

Installation quality matters as much as the barrel itself. Consumer Reports’ broader testing found that several barrels initially leaked during setup. Before placing the barrel permanently, check the spigot, drain, hose connection, inlet, and overflow while the unit contains water. A leak that is easy to fix beside a driveway may be much harder to address after the unit is boxed in by landscaping.

Choose the VINGLI if seasonal storage and portability are priorities

A collapsible VINGLI model is the most logical choice when a rigid barrel would be in the way during winter, when storage space is limited, or when the collection point changes during the season. The product page lists 50-, 66-, and 100-gallon versions, so confirm that the listing’s capacity corresponds to the version you are ordering.

Portability does not eliminate installation requirements. The frame still needs level ground, the inlet needs a secure screen, and the overflow needs a controlled path. A collapsible barrel that is allowed to bow into a walkway or discharge against a wall is not a successful installation.

Choose the Gardener’s Supply urn for a decorative garden setting

An urn-style barrel can blend into a finished landscape more easily than a utility-shaped tank. The guide names a 50-gallon Gardener’s Supply Rainwater Urn, but the currently accessible company listing is for a 39-gallon rain barrel. Those are not interchangeable capacities or necessarily the same product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current 39-gallon listing describes recycled materials, a planter, screened inlet, brass spigot, and UV- and frost-resistant construction. Treat these as specifications of the current 39-gallon listing only, not as proof of what the guide’s 50-gallon model included.

Choose the Good Ideas 90-gallon model for higher storage capacity

A 90-gallon barrel can be useful for a larger ornamental garden, particularly where the owner has enough roof area to refill it and enough demand to use the water before the next storm. It also creates more serious structural and overflow concerns than a 40- or 50-gallon barrel.

Confirm the footprint and base before buying. A large barrel that is unstable, placed on a narrow riser, or allowed to overflow at the foundation can create a bigger problem than the water it saves. If the precise 90-gallon model cannot be verified, consider the listing a lead for further research rather than a confirmed specification sheet.

Choose the Savannah Elevated Garden Rain Saver for access and decoration

The 42-gallon Savannah is the guide’s decorative elevated pick. A raised outlet can make it easier to fill a watering can without lifting it from the ground. It may also improve gravity flow because the outlet is higher, but the guide provides no measured pressure result, and elevation alone cannot make a barrel pump water uphill.

Inspect the base as part of the product, not as an afterthought. The support must remain level when the barrel is full, resist tipping, and stand on ground that will not settle or wash away. Route the overflow away from the building and from areas where it can undermine the base.

Size the barrel around the roof, rainfall, and garden

Rain barrels capture roof runoff for later non-potable uses such as watering lawns and ornamental plants. The right capacity depends on roof catchment, local rainfall timing, garden demand, available space, and how quickly you can empty the barrel. A larger tank is not automatically better if it fills during one storm and has nowhere safe to overflow.

A useful planning estimate is:

potential gallons before losses ≈ rainfall in inches × horizontal catchment area in square feet × 0.623

One inch of rain over 1,000 square feet of horizontal catchment represents approximately 623 gallons before collection losses. That is a calculation-based estimate, not a product test. Actual yield is reduced or altered by roof geometry, gutter condition, debris screens, first-flush diversion, leaks, and overflow once the barrel reaches capacity.

This illustrates why a 40- to 65-gallon barrel should not be marketed as enough for every household. A relatively small roof section can fill one barrel in a modest storm, while a large roof can overwhelm it quickly. Use local rainfall data and a government collection calculator, such as the Department of Energy’s water-collection tool, to estimate potential, then plan where the excess water will go.

Gravity flow: why a stand helps—and why it must be engineered

Rain-barrel outlets operate using gravity. More water depth and a higher outlet generally improve the available pressure, while a hose that rises above the outlet loses usable flow. The barrel cannot push water uphill, so place the destination at or below the outlet when possible.

Elevation also improves watering-can access. A rain barrel stand, rain barrel base, or rain barrel riser can be useful, but it must safely carry the full operating load and remain stable on wet ground. Do not assume that a decorative platform, stacked blocks, or a narrow improvised frame is suitable.

Nominal barrel size Approximate weight of water alone
42 gallons 350 pounds
45 gallons 375 pounds
50 gallons 417 pounds
55 gallons 459 pounds
90 gallons 751 pounds

These figures use approximately 8.34 pounds per gallon and exclude the barrel, stand, fittings, and any soil or plant material in an attached planter. A full 50-gallon unit weighs more than 400 pounds; a full 90-gallon unit weighs roughly three-quarters of a ton. Keep that load on firm, level ground. Before placing a barrel on a deck, balcony, porch, retaining structure, or other elevated surface, have the structure and drainage evaluated by an appropriately qualified professional.

How to install a rain barrel correctly

  1. Check local requirements first. Rules and incentives vary by jurisdiction. Ask your water utility, stormwater agency, local health department, or environmental authority whether collection, overflow, placement, or rebates have special requirements. The EPA’s rain-barrel guidance notes that some municipalities offer discounted sales or rebates.
  2. Choose a sound collection point. Use a downspout that receives enough roof runoff, but do not place the barrel where an overflow will discharge against the foundation, basement wall, crawlspace, walkway, or neighboring property. Leave room to remove the lid, clean the screen, operate the spigot, and drain the unit.
  3. Build a level base. Use a stable, load-bearing surface appropriate for the barrel’s full weight. A base that settles on one side can stress fittings and make an elevated barrel unstable. The larger the tank, the more important the foundation and overflow grading become.
  4. Match the downspout connection. Measure the downspout and confirm whether the barrel accepts direct flow, a flexible connector, or a diverter. A rain barrel downspout diverter can route water into the barrel while allowing excess flow to continue through the downspout, but the specific diverter must match the gutter system and barrel inlet.
  5. Install a covered inlet and overflow. The inlet screen should keep out leaves and reduce mosquito access. The overflow should have a secure connection or a deliberate discharge route that carries water away from the structure. Do not cap an overflow without providing another safe path for stormwater.
  6. Test before landscaping around it. Add water gradually or wait for a manageable rain. Check every seam, spigot, drain, hose connection, diverter, and overflow. Correct leaks while the barrel is accessible. Do not overtighten plastic fittings; if a joint leaks, drain the barrel, inspect the gasket and threads, and reseat the connection according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. Keep the barrel separate from potable plumbing. Do not connect untreated rainwater to an indoor drinking-water system or any arrangement that could allow cross-connection. Use clearly identified non-potable hoses and outlets.

Safety: rain-barrel water is not automatically safe to drink

Roof runoff can pick up germs and chemicals from roofing, gutters, pipes, storage materials, bird droppings, and other surfaces. The CDC advises treating collected rainwater as non-potable unless it is properly tested and treated. Untreated water should not be used for drinking, cooking, bathing, or other higher-exposure purposes.

For ordinary residential use, limit untreated water to appropriate non-potable applications such as watering ornamental plants and lawns. The CDC specifically recommends keeping rainwater separate from potable plumbing and limiting untreated rainwater to plants that are not eaten. The EPA also warns that rooftop runoff can carry bacteria and chemicals and flags concerns about using rain-barrel water on edible plantings. Follow local health guidance if you intend to water food crops, especially crops whose edible portions contact the water.

Mosquito, overflow, and winter maintenance

Prevent mosquito breeding

A barrel should have a properly fitted, fine screen or covered inlet, not merely an open grate that blocks leaves. The CDC recommends screening the inlet or emptying the barrel at least every 10 days. Inspect the screen after storms, remove accumulated debris, and make sure the lid and overflow openings remain secure.

A rain barrel mosquito screen can be a useful replacement or repair part, but confirm its dimensions and attachment method. A universal-looking screen may not seal the particular lid or inlet well enough to prevent insect access.

Keep overflow away from the building

Overflow is part of the installation design. A full barrel can discharge a large volume during the same storm that filled it. Connect the overflow to a hose or pipe that terminates on stable, appropriately graded ground, a rain garden, or another approved drainage destination. Check the route after the first heavy rain for erosion, ponding, or water returning toward the foundation.

For larger models, linked barrels can add storage, but linking them also increases the importance of level bases, properly sized connections, and a final overflow route. Never assume that adding capacity removes the need for an overflow.

Drain before freezing weather

Water that freezes can damage barrels, valves, hoses, and fittings. The current Catalina information specifically instructs owners to drain and invert the barrel for winter storage so water or ice does not pool. For other models, follow the current manufacturer’s instructions: drain the tank, disconnect exposed hoses where required, protect fittings, and store collapsible units in a dry location when freezing is expected.

Inspect fittings and clean the inlet

At the start of the season and after severe weather, inspect the spigots, gaskets, drain plugs, diverter, screen, and overflow. If a fitting drips, empty the barrel before attempting repair. A rain barrel replacement spigot may solve a worn valve, but threads and gasket sizes are not universal; match the replacement to the exact barrel or manufacturer specification rather than forcing a similar-looking part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to buy with the barrel

  • A properly matched downspout diverter or connector: useful when the downspout cannot be cut and rearranged conveniently, or when you want excess water to bypass a full barrel.
  • A stable base: required for access and gravity flow, but its load rating and footprint must suit the full barrel.
  • An overflow hose or pipe: directs excess water away from the foundation and helps prevent erosion.
  • A replacement screen: useful if the original inlet screen tears, shifts, or has openings large enough for mosquitoes.
  • Replacement fittings: spigots, gaskets, washers, and hose adapters should be selected by thread, diameter, and manufacturer compatibility rather than by appearance.
  • A dedicated non-potable watering hose or can: keeps collected water visibly separate from drinking-water equipment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by gallon number alone: capacity does not tell you the footprint, inlet height, overflow arrangement, or stability.
  • Putting the barrel directly beside the foundation: even a well-made barrel can overflow, leak, or be displaced by settling soil.
  • Assuming a raised barrel automatically creates strong pressure: the outlet height helps, but the water still cannot flow uphill and the base must support hundreds of pounds.
  • Ignoring the exact model: the Gardener’s Supply listing currently available is 39 gallons, while the guide names a 50-gallon urn. Similar Good Ideas listings also do not prove the specifications of the 90-gallon model.
  • Leaving the inlet open: leaves clog fittings and standing water can support mosquitoes.
  • Skipping the leak test: several barrels in Consumer Reports’ broader coverage initially leaked during setup, so testing is a practical step even when the product appears assembled correctly.
  • Using untreated water as drinking water: rainwater collected from a roof is not automatically potable and should remain isolated from the household’s potable plumbing.

Sources and verification notes

The product designations and reported rankings come from the accessible eight-barrel guide. Current product and maintenance details were checked against the linked FCMP Catalina retailer information, Consumer Reports’ broader testing coverage, the VINGLI product page, the current Gardener’s Supply listing, and related Good Ideas retail listings. These sources do not establish current price, stock, ASIN, warranty, or exact specifications for every model named in the guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which rain barrel did the reported guide name best overall?

The guide named the Good Ideas Impressions Nantucket 50-gallon Plastic Drainable Dual Overflow Planter Rain Barrel its overall pick. Its reported advantages were decorative styling, a planter, dual brass spigots, dual overflow features, and resistance to tipping during the reported test. The guide also noted that the spigots felt somewhat flimsy and the planter was limited.

Is a 50-gallon rain barrel enough for a house or garden?

It depends on roof area, rainfall, garden demand, and how quickly the barrel can be emptied. One inch of rain over 1,000 square feet of horizontal catchment represents approximately 623 gallons before losses, so a 50-gallon barrel can fill quickly. Plan the overflow rather than assuming one barrel will meet all irrigation needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a stand for a rain barrel?

A stand is not always required, but elevation can make it easier to fill a watering can and can improve gravity flow. The stand or base must support the full operating weight—about 417 pounds for the water in a 50-gallon barrel, excluding the container—and must remain stable on wet, level ground.

Can I use rain-barrel water on vegetables or for drinking?

Untreated roof runoff should not be used for drinking, cooking, bathing, or connected to potable plumbing. The CDC recommends limiting untreated rainwater to suitable non-potable uses such as watering plants that are not eaten. If higher-exposure use is intended, the water must be properly tested and treated in accordance with public-health guidance.

How do I keep mosquitoes out of a rain barrel?

Use a secure, fine inlet screen and inspect it regularly. The CDC recommends screening the inlet or emptying the barrel at least every 10 days. Also keep overflow openings secure and remove leaves or debris that can prevent the screen from sealing.

Should a rain barrel be emptied in winter?

In freezing climates, generally yes: drain the barrel and follow the model’s storage instructions. The current Catalina information specifically calls for draining and inverting the barrel to avoid water or ice pooling. Collapsible models should be dried and stored as directed by their manufacturer.

The Bottom Line

The reported guide’s best overall choice is the Good Ideas Impressions Nantucket, but the right barrel for a construction or landscape project depends on more than appearance or capacity. Match the exact SKU to the roof runoff, provide a level load-bearing base, route overflow away from the structure, screen the inlet, test the fittings, and treat the water as non-potable. Because the accessible guide has inconsistent date and provenance information—and several current model details remain unverified—confirm the current listing, dimensions, fittings, warranty, and local rules before purchasing.
