For most walls, BEHR Marquee Interior Paint & Primer is the strongest all-around choice because it balances coverage, durability, stain resistance, availability, and price better than most premium lines. Choose BEHR Dynasty when maximum stain and scrub resistance matter more than cost, Glidden Premium for a low-traffic budget room, and Sherwin-Williams Emerald for a heavily used kitchen, bathroom, hallway, or children’s room.
There is no universal best paint. The right product also depends on the existing surface, color change, desired sheen, number of coats, ventilation, and whether the room is exposed to grease, moisture, stains, or frequent cleaning. This guide evaluates specific paint lines—not entire brands—so you can make a room-by-room decision.

#1 Best Overall
- Self-Priming formula - requires no sanding
- Mold & Mildew-Proof paint film - guaranteed for 5 years
- Resists dirt and moisture on film coating
- Finish is washable and scrubbable with soap and water
- Product contains a mildewcide to prevent the growth of mold and mildew on the paint film only
1. BEHR Marquee: best overall interior paint
Best for: Most living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways, and general wall-painting projects.
BEHR Marquee is the most balanced recommendation when you want good hiding, a durable finished surface, broad big-box availability, and a reasonable chance of completing a color change with fewer coats. Good Housekeeping named it its 2025 Best Overall interior paint after evaluating application, finish, coverage, stain removal, abrasion resistance, fade resistance, and related technical information. Its testers reported a smooth, even finish, one-hour drying, strong stain resistance, and strong abrasion performance.
Why it stands out
- It offers a useful middle ground between inexpensive paint and the highest-priced premium lines.
- It is a good default for a homeowner who wants walls that look smooth but can still tolerate ordinary wiping.
- Its hiding performance makes it a sensible choice for repainting a previously painted wall, provided the wall is clean, sound, and reasonably uniform.
Important limitation
Do not interpret Marquee’s one-coat positioning as a promise for every color. Behr’s current documentation limits its one-coat hide guarantee to colors in the qualifying BEHR Dynasty and Marquee One-Coat Color Collection. Untinted Ultra Pure White and colors outside that collection may need additional coats. New drywall, patches, heavy stains, drastic color changes, and porous surfaces can require primer or more than one finish coat.
Best sheen choices: Eggshell is a practical general wall finish; use satin where cleaning demands are higher and matte or flat where hiding minor wall flaws matters more. Confirm the exact sheen and color-base availability at the retailer before buying.
Skip it if: You are painting a surface with serious stains, bare drywall, or adhesion problems and are hoping the product alone will replace proper preparation and specialty primer.
2. BEHR Dynasty: best premium durability and stain resistance
Best for: Kitchens, busy hallways, children’s rooms, mudrooms, and homeowners willing to pay more for a highly cleanable wall.

BEHR Dynasty is the premium pick when repeated cleaning and stain resistance take priority. In the publicly available Consumer Reports interior-paint table dated January 2024, Dynasty scored 99 overall, with 5/5 for hiding and 5/5 for staining. That is a particularly strong combination: it suggests the paint was not merely good at concealing the old color, but also performed well against the report’s staining evaluation.
Behr currently describes Dynasty as its most advanced interior paint line. The manufacturer lists up to 400 square feet of coverage per gallon and offers matte, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss sheens. The one-coat hide guarantee still applies only to the qualifying One-Coat Color Collection, not automatically to every tint.
Where it earns the premium
- Strong hide and stain performance in the dated Consumer Reports comparison.
- A broad sheen range for walls with different cleaning and reflection requirements.
- A logical choice for rooms where repainting or repeated scrubbing would cost more in labor than the price difference between paint lines.
Trade-offs
Dynasty is not automatically the most economical choice for a low-traffic bedroom or formal dining room. A premium gallon can also become an expensive project if the wall requires primer, multiple coats, or extensive repairs. The Consumer Reports score should be labeled as a January 2024 result, not as a current 2026 laboratory ranking.
Best sheen choices: Satin for a kitchen, mudroom, or children’s room; eggshell for a busy living area; matte for a lower-traffic room where wall imperfections are more noticeable.

Glidden Premium may be a better value there.
3. Glidden Premium: best budget interior paint
Best for: Low-traffic bedrooms, rental refreshes, guest rooms, ceilings, and large projects where gallon cost is the primary constraint.
Glidden Premium is the budget recommendation because it combines a comparatively low purchase price with a smooth application. Good Housekeeping named it its 2025 Best Value and reported a smooth finish and one-hour drying in testing.
The qualification is important: Good Housekeeping found weaker resistance to coffee and tomato stains than in more expensive paints. That does not make Glidden Premium a poor paint; it means the product is better suited to a room that will not be repeatedly scrubbed or exposed to grease, food, muddy shoes, or children’s art supplies.
How to use it successfully
- Choose it for a clean, previously painted surface with modest color change.
- Use eggshell rather than flat when the room needs occasional wiping, provided the wall is smooth enough for the added sheen.
- Budget for a second coat instead of assuming a cheaper gallon will cover in one pass.
- Use a separate primer on bare drywall, patches, stains, or glossy surfaces.
Best sheen choices: Flat or matte for a low-traffic bedroom or ceiling; eggshell for a guest room or living room with light use.
Skip it if: You are painting a kitchen, mudroom, bathroom, hallway, or children’s room that will be washed often. Paying more for a more stain-resistant line can reduce frustration and repainting.
4. Glidden Diamond: best for hiding a dark color
Best for: A properly prepared wall where covering the previous color in as few coats as practical is the main goal.
Rank #2
- PAINT + PRIMER IN ONE: Evolve’s paint-and-primer formula helps you get great coverage from the start, sealing your surface and reducing the extra work of multiple coats.
- AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE SHEENS, COLORS & SIZES: Choose from a curated palette of designer colors in Flat, Eggshell, Satin, and Semi-Gloss sheens to match any style, room, or project. Available in 1-Gallons & 5-Gallons.
- EGGSHELL SHEEN – Soft, Velvety Glow: Offers a gentle sheen that balances elegance with durability. Ideal for moderate-traffic areas like dining rooms, hallways, and family rooms. Easy to clean without compromising the finish.
- STAIN & SCRUB RESISTANT: Built to last in real spaces, Evolve helps resist marks, scuffs, and water spotting, so your home continues to look polished and well-maintained.
- DESIGNED FOR MOISTURE-PRONE AREAS: Formulated to perform well in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, laundry rooms, and other high-humidity spaces.
Glidden Diamond earned Good Housekeeping’s 2025 Best One-Coat Coverage designation. Glidden currently describes the line as an ultra-scrubbable, one-coat, zero-VOC, low-odor, GREENGUARD Gold-certified paint and primer with stain resistance and a mold- and mildew-resistant coating.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
However, the independent evidence shows why hiding and durability must be considered separately. Consumer Reports’ January 2024 table gave Diamond a 5/5 hiding score but only 1/5 for staining. In practical terms, Diamond may cover a dark color impressively while not being the best choice for a wall that must withstand repeated stain removal. Manufacturer claims and independent test results are measuring different things and should not be collapsed into one claim of overall superiority.
One-coat caution
Glidden’s one-coat guarantee applies to a designated collection, not every possible tint. Even a strong-hiding paint may need another coat over a very dark, bright, glossy, patched, stained, or uneven surface. New drywall and porous repairs can absorb paint unevenly and produce flashing unless they are properly primed.
Best sheen choices: Choose eggshell or satin where cleaning matters, but do not use a shiny sheen to compensate for a rough wall. The sheen will make defects more visible.
Skip it if: Stain removal is more important than first-coat coverage. For a kitchen or high-traffic hallway, consider Emerald, Dynasty, Marquee, or Reserve.

Best for: Homeowners who prioritize a smooth, even appearance and shop at Lowe’s.
Good Housekeeping named HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Infinity its 2025 Smoothest Finish. Its testing also found strong hiding and finish quality, although drying could take up to four hours.
The manufacturer describes Infinity as a 100% acrylic interior paint and primer with one-coat coverage, stain and scuff resistance, and GREENGUARD Gold certification. It is available exclusively at Lowe’s, according to the manufacturer. The current product information lists flat, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss sheens, quart, gallon, and five-gallon sizes, coverage of 300–400 square feet per gallon, touch-dry time of one to four hours, and a two-hour recoat time under the stated conditions.
Why the dry-time range matters
A label’s recoat time is not the same as the time required for the paint to reach final hardness. Cool temperatures, high humidity, poor ventilation, heavy application, and dark colors can all slow drying. Plan around the longer end of Infinity’s stated range if you are painting an occupied home or need a predictable same-day schedule.
Best sheen choices: Eggshell for most living spaces; satin for a busier hallway or children’s room; flat for a ceiling or a wall with minor imperfections.
Skip it if: You need a product available through a local paint dealer rather than Lowe’s, or you cannot allow the surface adequate time to dry between coats.
6. Sherwin-Williams Emerald: best for bathrooms and high-traffic walls
Best for: Bathrooms, kitchens, mudrooms, stairways, hallways, and children’s rooms where scrubbing and stain resistance matter.
Sherwin-Williams Emerald is a strong room-specific choice even though its results vary by test. Good Housekeeping named it 2025 Best for Bathrooms, citing stain resistance and scrubbability. Its testers also noted inconsistent finish and recommended a second coat. Sherwin-Williams currently lists exceptional washability, coverage, stain blocking, scrub resistance, water-spotting resistance, and burnish resistance. Emerald is available in flat, matte, satin, and semi-gloss.
Consumer Reports’ January 2024 table gave Emerald a 46 overall score, with 3/5 hiding and 3/5 staining. That is not necessarily a contradiction. A broad hiding-and-staining test may reward different characteristics than a bathroom-focused assessment emphasizing washability, moisture exposure, and practical cleaning. The responsible conclusion is that Emerald is a compelling high-traffic and bathroom candidate, not that it wins every performance category.
Bathroom and mildew qualification
Sherwin-Williams says Emerald contains agents that inhibit mold and mildew growth on the paint surface. This is a claim about the cured paint film, not a mold-remediation system. Paint cannot fix a plumbing leak, failed shower caulk, roof leak, condensation problem, water-damaged drywall, or inadequate exhaust fan. Correct the moisture source and address existing mold before repainting.
Best sheen choices: Satin for most bathroom and kitchen walls; semi-gloss where frequent cleaning and moisture exposure justify more reflection; matte or flat only where the product and room conditions specifically support it.
Skip it if: You are seeking the cheapest paint for a lightly used room, or the wall has unresolved moisture damage.

7. Benjamin Moore Aura: best low-emission premium option
Best for: Bedrooms, nurseries, living rooms, and color-focused projects where smooth application and strong hide are worth a premium price.
Benjamin Moore describes Aura Interior as its highest-performing interior paint, with Color Lock technology, strong hide, repeated-washing resistance, and matte, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss sheens. Good Housekeeping named Aura its 2025 Best Low-VOC and reported smooth application, fast drying, and a low hazardous-material concentration according to its safety-data-sheet review.
The results are not perfect in every category. Good Housekeeping found only fair stain resistance, while Consumer Reports’ January 2024 table rated Aura 70 overall, with 5/5 hiding and 3/5 staining. Aura is therefore a strong candidate for a smooth, color-rich finish and good coverage, but not an automatic winner for a grease-prone kitchen or a wall that will be aggressively scrubbed.
Price and emissions
Benjamin Moore’s product page listed prices from $46.99 to $108.99 depending on size and sheen when checked for this guide on August 10, 2026. Treat those figures as dated examples rather than permanent prices. The low-VOC designation also requires context: a lower VOC number or front-label claim is not a guarantee that indoor air contains no potentially irritating or harmful emissions.
Best sheen choices: Matte or eggshell for bedrooms and living rooms; satin for a busier wall. If you specifically want a matte bathroom coating, look at the separate Aura Bath & Spa product rather than assuming every Aura formula is intended for the same moisture conditions.
Skip it if: You need the best stain-removal performance per dollar or are painting a large area on a strict budget.
8. Valspar Reserve: best fade-resistant alternative
Best for: Walls exposed to strong daylight, shoppers who want a midrange-to-premium paint, and projects where hiding and color retention both matter.
Valspar currently describes Reserve as a 100% acrylic paint and primer with one-coat coverage, fade-resistant color, stain blocking, scratch, scuff, and scrub resistance, a mildew-resistant finish, and coverage of up to 400 square feet per gallon. The line is offered in flat, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss. Its stated touch-dry time is one to two hours, with a two-to-four-hour recoat time under the manufacturer’s conditions.
Consumer Reports’ January 2024 table rated Reserve Recommended, with an 87 overall score, 5/5 hiding, and 4/5 staining. That combination makes it a credible alternative to Marquee or Dynasty when you want strong coverage without automatically choosing the most expensive line.
Color and coat limitations
Valspar notes that deep or bright colors may require an additional coat. This is common even with premium paint because highly saturated pigments, a contrasting old color, porous patches, and uneven absorption can defeat a one-coat expectation. Buy enough paint for the likely number of coats rather than relying on a guarantee before checking whether the chosen color qualifies.
Best sheen choices: Eggshell for ordinary living areas, satin for hallways and kitchens, and semi-gloss for trim-like surfaces if the product and substrate are appropriate.
Skip it if: You cannot wait through the longer end of the stated two-to-four-hour recoat range, or your wall needs specialty stain blocking rather than ordinary paint-and-primer coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow the evidence was weighed
This is an evidence-based buying guide, not a claim of new hands-on BHG laboratory testing. Good Housekeeping’s 2025 interior-paint roundup describes testing that includes application, consumer-perceived finish, abrasion resistance, stain removal, coverage, consistency, fade resistance, safety-data-sheet review, and technical data. Those awards are attributed to Good Housekeeping.
The Consumer Reports comparison separates hiding from staining and is marked as of January 2024. That separation is especially useful: Glidden Diamond’s 5/5 hiding and 1/5 staining scores show why a paint that covers a previous color quickly is not automatically the most durable paint for a kitchen.
Manufacturer pages supply coverage figures, sheen ranges, drying and recoat times, certifications, retailer information, and product claims. They are not independent proof. Editorial recommendations then match those facts to room conditions, budget, preparation quality, and the reader’s tolerance for multiple coats.
Choose the sheen before the color
| Sheen | Best uses | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat or matte | Ceilings, formal rooms, low-traffic bedrooms, walls with minor imperfections | Low reflection and better concealment of small surface flaws | Traditional flat paint is harder to clean; aggressive scrubbing can burnish or remove the finish. Modern washable mattes vary by product. |
| Eggshell | Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and general-purpose walls | More wipeable than flat without the pronounced reflection of satin | Still reveals more patching and drywall defects than flat or matte. |
| Satin | Kitchens, bathrooms, children’s rooms, mudrooms, hallways, and high-traffic walls | Better cleanability, scuff resistance, and moisture tolerance | Reflects more light and highlights dents, patches, roller marks, and uneven texture. |
| Semi-gloss | Trim, doors, baseboards, window casings, and frequently cleaned surfaces | Most moisture- and wear-resistant of the common wall-and-trim sheens | High reflection makes surface defects especially visible and can feel too shiny across a large wall. |
Behr’s current sheen guidance makes the same practical distinction: lower-sheen paint hides imperfections better, while eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss provide progressively greater cleanability and moisture or wear resistance. The best sheen is a compromise between the wall’s condition and the room’s cleaning demands.

Sometimes—but the label does not eliminate the need for primer. Paint-and-primer-in-one is a product category and marketing shorthand for a higher-build finish paint. It does not mean that one coat will seal every substrate, block every stain, or solve every adhesion problem.
Use a separate, appropriate primer when painting:
- New drywall or highly porous surfaces.
- Fresh joint compound and patched areas.
- Water, smoke, grease, ink, rust, or tannin stains.
- Glossy or poorly adhered existing paint.
- A dramatic change from a very dark color to a light color, or vice versa.
- A surface with adhesion problems.
- A surface requiring lead-safe encapsulation or specialty preparation.
BEHR’s Dynasty guidance specifically identifies new drywall, patches, heavy stains, drastic color changes, and best-adhesion situations where separate primer may be necessary. Valspar gives similar guidance for stains, deep colors, and drastic color changes. See the BEHR product directions and Valspar Reserve directions before assuming a single product will do everything.

One-coat coverage: what the claim really means
A one-coat claim normally assumes a properly prepared surface, the correct product base, a qualifying color, proper film thickness, a reasonably compatible underlying color, and suitable temperature and humidity. It is not a guarantee for every wall in every home.
Plan on a second coat over new drywall, repaired areas, heavy stains, very dark or bright colors, glossy surfaces, porous substrates, and walls with uneven absorption. A second coat is also useful when the first coat is technically covered but looks uneven in sheen or color.

How much paint do you need?
Use the coverage number on the specific can rather than a generic internet estimate. A practical calculation is:
Paintable area = wall perimeter × wall height + ceiling area − large openings.
Paint required = paintable area × number of coats ÷ labeled coverage per gallon.
For example, a 12-by-15-foot room with 8-foot walls has 54 feet of perimeter and approximately 432 square feet of wall area. Its ceiling adds 180 square feet if you are painting it. After subtracting doors and windows, suppose the project has 552 square feet of paintable surface. Two coats total 1,104 square feet. At 350 square feet per gallon, the calculation is about 3.2 gallons, so you would round up to four gallons rather than buy only three. If the ceiling uses a separate flat ceiling paint, calculate it separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Actual coverage changes with texture, porosity, color, application method, paint thickness, and the number of coats. Buy enough paint from the same color batch for one continuous area when possible, and intermix cans in a clean bucket—often called boxing the paint—to reduce subtle variation between cans.
Value is more than the price of a gallon
Compare the total project cost, not just the shelf price:
- Price per gallon and labeled coverage.
- Whether the color is likely to need one coat or two.
- Whether bare, stained, or patched areas need separate primer.
- Time saved by better hide or faster recoat.
- How well the cured finish tolerates cleaning and touch-ups.
- How soon a low-durability finish may need repainting.
For a guest room that is rarely touched, Glidden Premium may be the economical choice. For a hallway that receives daily scuffs, Dynasty, Emerald, Marquee, or Reserve can cost less over the life of the project if the surface stays presentable longer. Do not treat current prices as permanent; even Benjamin Moore’s Aura listing, which showed $46.99–$108.99 depending on size and sheen when checked August 10, 2026, can change with retailer, color, promotions, and region.
Low-VOC, zero-VOC, and GREENGUARD Gold
Low-emission paint can be a sensible choice for bedrooms, nurseries, occupied homes, and people sensitive to odor. But EPA warns that low-VOC and no-VOC labels can be misleading for indoor-air decisions. Outdoor VOC regulations do not account for every potentially harmful volatile chemical, and a lower total VOC number does not automatically mean a product is risk-free.
GREENGUARD Gold is a low-chemical-emissions certification with stricter emission limits than standard GREENGUARD certification. It does not mean the paint contains no chemicals or that ventilation is unnecessary.
Ventilate during and after painting, follow the label and safety-data-sheet directions, and keep children, pets, pregnant people, and anyone with respiratory sensitivities away from wet-paint vapors when feasible. EPA’s indoor-air guidance recommends fresh air and ventilation when painting.

| Room or surface | Prioritize | Good starting choices | Suggested sheen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Smooth application, color accuracy, easy touch-up, lower odor | Benjamin Moore Aura, BEHR Marquee, Infinity, or Glidden Premium | Matte, flat, or eggshell |
| Living room | Appearance, moderate washability, resistance to ordinary wear | BEHR Marquee, Infinity, Aura, or Valspar Reserve | Eggshell; satin for heavier use |
| Kitchen | Grease and stain resistance, scrubbability, ventilation | Sherwin-Williams Emerald, BEHR Dynasty, Marquee, or Valspar Reserve | Eggshell or satin |
| Bathroom | Moisture tolerance, washability, ventilation, mold prevention through moisture control | Emerald, Aura Bath & Spa when a matte bathroom finish is desired, Dynasty, or Reserve | Satin or semi-gloss; specialized matte only when appropriate |
| Hallway, stairs, or mudroom | Scrub and scuff resistance | Emerald, Dynasty, Marquee, Reserve, or Infinity | Eggshell or satin |
| Children’s room | Stain removal and repeated cleaning | Emerald, Dynasty, Marquee, Reserve, or Infinity | Satin or washable eggshell |
| Ceiling | Low reflection, low spatter, concealment of irregularities | Flat or ceiling-specific paint | Flat or matte |
| Trim and doors | Hardness, leveling, scuff resistance, cleanability | Use a dedicated trim or door enamel, such as Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel or Benjamin Moore Advance, rather than automatically using wall paint | Satin or semi-gloss |
Bathroom paint cannot remediate mold. Fix leaks, condensation, failed caulk, water-damaged drywall, and inadequate exhaust ventilation before painting. Likewise, ordinary wall paint is not automatically suitable for cabinets, doors, or high-wear woodwork; those surfaces usually benefit from a coating designed to level and harden on trim or cabinetry.
Preparation and application checklist
- Identify the substrate. Determine whether you are painting previously painted drywall, new drywall, plaster, masonry, wood, trim, or metal. The correct primer and coating can change with the substrate.
- Check for lead before disturbing old paint. In a pre-1978 home, assume lead-based paint may be present unless a qualified inspection establishes otherwise.
- Clean the surface. Remove dust, dirt, grease, smoke residue, and loose debris. Kitchen walls may need more thorough degreasing than bedroom walls.
- Remove failing paint. Scrape loose or peeling areas carefully, then feather the edges and repair the substrate.
- Patch and sand. Fill nail holes, cracks, and gouges; let the compound dry; sand it smooth; and remove sanding dust.
- Dull glossy areas. Scuff-sand or otherwise prepare glossy paint according to the product directions so the new coating can adhere.
- Prime where necessary. Use a stain-blocking, bonding, or tintable primer when the surface or color change calls for it.
- Protect the room. Cover floors and furniture, and mask trim, fixtures, and hardware.
- Paint in sequence. A common order is ceiling first, walls second, and trim last. Maintain a wet edge and do not stretch paint too thin.
- Respect recoat time. Do not apply another coat simply because the surface feels dry. Follow the label, and allow additional time in cool, humid, or poorly ventilated conditions.
- Allow the finish to cure. Touch-dry does not mean fully hardened. BEHR advises waiting one week before cleaning the cured film with a mild, non-abrasive detergent and warns that dark colors, cool temperatures, and high humidity can lengthen drying.
Valspar’s current Reserve directions recommend cleaning, removing loose paint, dulling glossy surfaces, patching imperfections, allowing new masonry to cure at least 30 days, and applying at 50–90°F with a premium brush, synthetic roller, or airless sprayer. Always use the directions for the product actually purchased.

Lead-paint precautions in older homes
For a home built before 1978, do not begin aggressive sanding or scraping until you understand the lead risk. Avoid dry sanding and uncontrolled dust-producing preparation. Contractors who disturb painted surfaces generally must be certified by the EPA or an authorized state program under the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule.
Homeowners working in their own homes are treated differently under the federal rule, but that does not make dust safe. Read the EPA consumer guidance, consider testing or a qualified inspection, isolate the work area, and use lead-safe methods. The EPA explains additional ways to determine whether a home contains lead-based paint in its lead-paint guidance.

Do not keep rolling an almost-dry coat thinner and thinner. Let the first coat dry, inspect it in good light, and apply a full second coat if needed. Prime porous patches, use the correct color base, and verify whether the color qualifies for the product’s one-coat collection.

Stains bleeding back through
Ordinary finish paint may not seal water, smoke, grease, ink, rust, or tannin stains. Clean and dry the surface, identify the source, and apply an appropriate stain-blocking primer before repainting. If moisture caused the stain, fix the leak first.
Flashing, lap marks, or uneven sheen
Flashing often occurs when patched areas absorb paint differently from the surrounding wall. Prime repairs, use consistent application pressure, maintain a wet edge, and avoid stopping in the middle of a wall. Do not overwork paint as it begins to set.
Roller or brush marks
Use the applicator recommended by the manufacturer, load it evenly, and apply a consistent film. A smoother product does not eliminate the need for a sound, properly sanded surface. Higher sheen makes texture and marks easier to see.
Color looks wrong after painting
Wet paint changes as it dries, and color can look different under morning, afternoon, evening, and artificial light. Sheen, wall texture, adjacent colors, and the existing substrate also affect perception. Test the actual paint and sheen on a large sample board or several wall sections before committing to the entire room.
Paint remains tacky or smells strong
Improve ventilation, check temperature and humidity, and allow more time before recoating. Do not seal a poorly ventilated room immediately after painting. Follow the product label and safety-data-sheet precautions rather than relying only on a front-label low-odor claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is expensive interior paint worth it?
Sometimes. Premium paint is most likely to pay off in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, children’s rooms, and other areas that need repeated cleaning. It may not be economical for a lightly used guest room. Compare coverage, expected coats, primer needs, durability, and repainting frequency—not just the price per gallon.
Do I need primer over old paint?
Not always. A clean, sound, previously painted wall with a modest color change may only need finish paint. Use separate primer over new drywall, porous patches, stains, glossy surfaces, questionable adhesion, or a dramatic color change. Primer is also essential when the specific coating directions call for it.
How long should interior paint dry before a second coat?
Follow the product label. Infinity lists a two-hour recoat time under its stated conditions, while Valspar Reserve lists two to four hours. Cool temperatures, high humidity, poor ventilation, heavy coats, and dark colors can extend the wait. Touch-dry is not the same as fully cured.
What paint is easiest to clean?
Satin and semi-gloss are generally easier to wipe than flat paint, but the formula also matters. For high-traffic walls, consider Sherwin-Williams Emerald, BEHR Dynasty, BEHR Marquee, or Valspar Reserve. Choose the lowest sheen that meets the cleaning requirement because higher sheen reveals more surface defects.
Can one coat really cover a wall?
It can under favorable conditions, but no one-coat claim applies universally. The color must usually belong to the manufacturer’s qualifying collection, and the surface must be clean, sound, properly prepared, and reasonably similar in color. Dark colors, bright colors, patches, stains, new drywall, and porous walls commonly require another coat.
Is zero-VOC paint completely safe?
No label should be treated as a guarantee of zero indoor-air risk. EPA notes that low-VOC and no-VOC labels do not capture every potentially concerning volatile chemical. Ventilate during and after painting, follow the label and safety-data-sheet instructions, and keep sensitive people and pets away from wet paint and vapors when feasible. GREENGUARD Gold indicates stricter tested emissions limits, not the absence of chemicals.
How much paint does one gallon cover?
Use the coverage figure on the specific product label. The products in this guide list figures ranging from about 300 to 400 square feet per gallon under manufacturer conditions. Calculate the paintable area, multiply by the number of coats, divide by the label coverage, and round up. Texture, porosity, color, application method, and surface repairs can reduce actual coverage.
What should I do before painting a pre-1978 home?
Assume lead-based paint may be present until a qualified inspection or testing establishes otherwise. Avoid dry sanding and uncontrolled scraping. Read EPA’s lead-safe renovation guidance, and hire an EPA- or state-certified contractor when required for paid work that disturbs painted surfaces.

You can, but it is usually not the best coating for high-wear woodwork. Trim, doors, and cabinets benefit from a dedicated enamel formulated for better leveling, hardness, and scuff resistance. Consider products such as Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel or Benjamin Moore Advance, and follow the preparation requirements for the substrate.
Why does my paint show shiny patches or lap marks?
The usual causes are uneven absorption from patches, inconsistent film thickness, stopping without maintaining a wet edge, or rubbing an area after the paint has started to dry. Prime repairs, apply a full even coat, work in manageable sections, and avoid overworking the surface. A second uniform coat often resolves differences that remain after the first coat.
Can bathroom paint prevent mold?
No. Some products claim mildew-resistant or antimicrobial performance on the dry paint film, but paint does not remove existing mold or correct leaks, condensation, failed caulk, water-damaged drywall, or inadequate ventilation. Fix and dry the moisture problem before repainting.
The Bottom Line
For most interior walls, buy BEHR Marquee in the sheen appropriate to the room. Upgrade to BEHR Dynasty when stain and scrub resistance are the priority; choose Glidden Premium for a lightly used room on a tight budget; choose Glidden Diamond when first-coat hiding is the main goal; and choose Emerald for bathrooms and high-traffic areas. No product can replace cleaning, repairs, primer where needed, ventilation, or lead-safe preparation—and no one-coat or zero-VOC claim should be read more broadly than the manufacturer’s actual conditions.
