For a backyard, park or travel
Prioritize easy setup, a comfortable size and a package that includes the suspension you need. A hammock body alone is not ready to hang. The ENO TravelNest combo is worth comparing if included straps matter; the DoubleNest is a versatile alternative, but REI says its straps are sold separately.
For backpacking

For sleeping overnight
Plan for the whole shelter: hammock, suspension, insect protection and rain coverage appropriate to the weather and location. A mesh canopy can address bugs, but rain protection may be a separate fly. An underquilt can be another useful component; confirm what is included with the specific configuration.
Check fit, capacity and setup before buying
- Length: REI’s general rule of thumb is to look for a hammock at least two feet longer than your height. It is a starting point, not a guarantee of comfort or fit. REI hammock basics
- Capacity and sharing: Compare the stated capacity with the intended occupants. A double hammock can be used solo, though its taller sides may feel different from a single.
- Suspension: Check whether straps are included and whether the suspension is compatible with the hammock and hanging points. If you need to buy straps separately, include them in the total setup cost.
- Protection: For overnight use, check whether the bug net and rainfly are included, separate or absent. Don’t treat the word “hammock” as evidence that a complete shelter system is in the box.
- Hanging location: A hammock needs suitable anchor points. Follow the maker’s setup guidance and use tree-friendly suspension where hanging from trees.
How to narrow down the choice
- Decide whether you’ll lounge, travel, backpack or sleep overnight.
- Choose the size and capacity for solo use or sharing, and compare hammock length with your height.
- For trips, compare the packed weight of the complete setup—not just the hammock body.
- Check the current listing for straps, bug protection, rainfly and other included components.
- Compare total setup cost after adding any compatible accessories you still need.
