For many people, resistance bands and light dumbbells are the most versatile first purchases; a nonslip mat helps with floor exercises. The other five options are useful for specific goals, space, or routines—not essentials for everyone. Choose equipment that fits your current ability, the movements you plan to do, and the room you have.
How to choose home workout equipment on a tight budget
Start with the exercises you will actually do, then buy the smallest amount of equipment that supports them. Bands and dumbbells can cover many strength movements, while a mat is useful for floor work. A stability ball, mini loops, jump rope, foam roller, and ankle weights each serve narrower purposes.

There are no current retail prices established here, so treat “budget-friendly” as compact, reusable, or suited to a specific need—not as a promise that an item costs a particular amount. ACE’s September 2016 guide gave historical prices for several categories, but those figures are not current shopping guidance: ACE’s dated home-gym guide. The right starting resistance also varies by person and movement; one weight or band level will not suit everyone.

The 8 best budget-friendly pieces of fitness equipment for home
| Equipment | Best for | Versatility and space | Fit or suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resistance bands or tubing | Strength training across a range of movements | Highly versatile; compact and easy to store | Choose resistance that allows controlled repetitions; position changes affect difficulty |
| Light dumbbells | Adding external resistance to presses, rows, curls, and body-weight movements | Versatile for strength; requires storage for each pair | Choose weight based on your strength and the exercise |
| Nonslip exercise mat | Floor exercises and a more comfortable surface | Useful for floor work; stores rolled or folded, depending on style | Prioritize grip and cushioning for the movements you do |
| Stability ball | Core-focused exercises and variation with bands or dumbbells | Supports exercise variety; takes more room than a band or mat | Check your height against the maker’s sizing chart and seated position |
| Mini loop resistance bands | Lateral and diagonal steps for the outer hips | Compact, but more targeted than long bands | Pick a resistance level suited to the exercise; may be redundant if you own long bands |
| Jump rope | Cardio for people who can jump comfortably | Compact and portable; needs clear space to use | Not suitable for everyone; begin with a few minutes if new to it |
| Foam roller | Optional post-workout rolling | Limited to mobility or massage-style use; needs storage space | Not a strength-training basic and does not guarantee recovery or prevent injury |
| Ankle weights | Selected leg exercises such as side leg raises or hip extensions | Narrower use than bands or dumbbells | Optional; removable-weight cuffs allow adjustment |
1. Resistance bands or tubing
For many home exercisers, a long resistance band or tube is the strongest first buy. Harvard Health says bands can support full-body strength training, are portable and easy to store, and can be made more or less challenging by changing hand or foot position. Examples include rows and triceps extensions. See Harvard Health’s home-gym guidance and ACE’s exercise and equipment guide.

Choose a resistance that lets you move with control through the intended repetitions. A tube with handles or an attachment can expand exercise options, but do not assume an attachment is safe on every door or that all bands are equally made. Follow the product’s instructions for use and anchoring.
2. Light dumbbells
Dumbbells make it simple to add resistance to movements such as presses, rows, and curls, and can complement body-weight exercises. Start with a pair you can control for the specific movement; your appropriate load for a press may differ from what you can use for a curl. Harvard Health advises choosing hand weights in light of current strength and adding heavier weights as needed. Harvard Health’s guidance includes light dumbbells among compact home-gym basics.

ACE’s 2016 article mentions 3-, 5-, and 8-pound dumbbells as beginner examples, but those dated examples are not a universal prescription or a current price reference. Choose based on your ability and exercise, rather than copying a number.
3. Nonslip exercise mat
A mat can make floor exercises more comfortable and provide a grippy surface, but it is not mandatory for every workout. Harvard Health recommends a nonslip, well-padded surface; thick carpet or towels can work in a pinch. ACE notes that thinner yoga mats tend to emphasize grip, while thicker mats provide more cushioning for floor exercises. Match the mat to your movements and the surface beneath it, rather than choosing by branding alone. Sources: Harvard Health and ACE.

Your living room stays a living room—until it doesn't.
4. Stability ball
A stability ball is an optional way to add core-focused movements or vary exercises done with bands and dumbbells. It is bulkier than either, so consider where you will store it. For fit, ACE suggests that your hips and knees should be near 90 degrees when seated on the ball. Use your height and the manufacturer’s sizing chart to choose a size; a ball that does not fit your body or space is unlikely to be a helpful purchase. See ACE’s sizing guidance.
5. Mini loop resistance bands
Mini loops are useful for lateral and diagonal stepping exercises that target the outer hips. They take little storage space, but they are a targeted accessory rather than a replacement for the broader exercise options of a long band. If you already own long resistance bands, consider whether this extra purchase fills a real gap in your routine. ACE describes mini-band walks and different resistance levels in its equipment guide.

6. Jump rope
A jump rope is a compact cardio option if you can jump comfortably and have enough clear space. ACE suggests that beginners start with a few minutes and frames rope jumping as an option for someone who has established moderate fitness. It is not a universal recommendation: choose another form of cardio if jumping is uncomfortable or unsuitable for you. See ACE’s guidance.
7. Foam roller
A foam roller is an optional post-workout tool, not a strength-training basic. Harvard Health describes rolling the legs, back, or hips and reports that a 2014 study found reduced muscle soreness after a 20-minute post-workout routine. That finding does not establish that rolling prevents injury or guarantees recovery. See Harvard Health’s discussion.

8. Ankle weights
Ankle weights are best reserved for routines that call for selected leg exercises, such as side leg raises or hip extensions. They offer fewer uses than bands or dumbbells, so most people do not need to start with them. Harvard Health describes padded cuffs with removable weight bars as one way to adjust resistance. See Harvard Health’s home-gym article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What equipment do you need to work out at home?
For a basic strength-focused setup, consider a resistance band or tubing and light dumbbells; add a mat if you do floor exercises and need more grip or cushioning. That is a starting point, not a required shopping list. If space is limited, bands are especially easy to store. If your routine centers on cardio, equipment for strength work may not be your first priority.
Buy optional items only when they address a clear need: a ball for exercises that use one, mini loops for targeted stepping work, a rope if jumping suits you, a roller for post-workout rolling, or ankle weights for selected leg movements. People with health concerns, pain, balance limitations, or exercise restrictions should seek appropriate professional advice before choosing or beginning a routine.
