What glass should you use for Cognac?
For tasting, a tulip glass is a strong all-purpose choice. Cognac.fr, the BNIC-hosted Cognac information site, explains that the wide bowl gives the spirit room while the narrower opening gathers aromas toward the nose: Cognac.fr’s tasting guidance.
A stemmed glass also lets you hold and gently roll the liquid without warming the bowl as much. Cognac educator Franky Marshall told Liquor.com: “The stem makes them easier to hold and to roll the liquid to observe [its] characteristics, as opposed to other glasses with a similar body but no stem.” That is a tasting advantage, not a rule that every Cognac must be served in a stemmed glass.

Are tulip glasses better than snifters?
For aroma-focused tasting, the tulip shape has a clear rationale: its narrower rim concentrates aromas. But “snifter” covers glasses with different proportions, and the label alone does not establish how well a particular glass will present a spirit. Compare the actual shape, especially how much the opening narrows relative to the bowl.

Marshall described tulip glasses as helping “to concentrate the aromas and eases them gently upwards towards the nose.” A stem is useful when you want to hold and rotate the glass while examining the liquid. A bowl-shaped snifter can still be enjoyable; the choice is about tasting preference and handling, not a prohibition.
Can you drink Cognac from a rocks glass?
Yes. A rocks glass is a practical choice for Cognac served over ice or mixed. Ezra Star, a Cognac educator for the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC), told Liquor.com: “A nice VS or VSOP with some ice in a rocks glass is wonderful.” Star also cautioned against rigid rules: “I think the more we think about cognac as a beverage, the less we have to restrict the glass or how we enjoy it,”

A rocks glass will not focus aromas in the same way as a tapered tasting glass, but that may not be your priority when serving a casual drink. Choose the glass to suit the serve.
What glass is used for professional Cognac tasting?
An ISO tasting glass is another option for structured tasting. Rémy Martin says cellar master Baptiste Loiseau uses one to taste eaux-de-vie and Cognac; its tasting guide describes tall sides and a narrow opening that release and focus aromas. Loiseau explains the balance this way: “if you don’t have the right glass shape, you might only smell the alcohol rather than the aromas. Whereas if the glass is narrow and not very open, you might only sense the aromas without the alcohol sensation.” This is manufacturer guidance about its cellar master’s practice, not a comparative glass test.
