The 7 Best Bird Feeders The Spruce Has Tested

The best bird feeder depends on your seed, target birds, squirrel pressure, mounting point, and cleaning routine. Here are seven documented picks from The Spruce’s tested-feeder coverage, including Brome, Droll Yankees, WoodLink, More Birds, and Twinkle Star options.

The best bird feeder is the one that matches your birds, food, squirrels, mounting point, and willingness to clean it. The Spruce’s documented tested selection ranges from affordable hanging feeders to weight-activated Brome models, a motorized Droll Yankees feeder, a high-capacity WoodLink hopper, and a caged suet feeder.

The best bird feeder depends on more than the seed it holds. Squirrel pressure, the birds you want to attract, how often you are willing to clean and refill it, and the strength of your mounting point all matter. The Spruce’s tested selection includes weight-activated feeders, a caged suet feeder, a high-capacity post-mounted model, and a motorized option.

For most backyards dealing with squirrels, the Brome Squirrel Buster Plus is the most broadly useful choice: its weight-activated design is intended to close access when a heavier animal lands on the perch, while remaining straightforward to fill and maintain. The Droll Yankees Yankee Flipper is the more advanced choice for shoppers who want an active, motorized deterrent. If you feed suet, the More Birds Squirrel-X Double Suet Caged Bird Feeder is the better match because it is designed for suet cakes rather than general seed.

The seven documented picks

1. Brome Squirrel Buster Plus: best all-around squirrel-resistant option

The Brome Squirrel Buster Plus uses a weight-activated mechanism. When a heavier animal lands on the perch, the feeding openings are designed to close or become inaccessible; when lighter birds land, the ports remain available. That makes it a practical middle ground between a basic feeder and a powered device.

Testing cited in the research rated the Plus highly for ease of use, effectiveness, durability, and value. Its main advantage is not a promise that every squirrel will be defeated. Placement, the animal’s persistence, and the feeder’s installation still matter. The more accurate description is squirrel-resistant or designed to deter squirrels.

Choose the Plus when you want one general-purpose feeder for common seed-eating backyard birds and prefer a passive mechanism with no batteries or motor to maintain. Before buying, confirm the current capacity and included mounting hardware for the exact version, since product configurations can change.

2. Brome Squirrel Buster Mini: best for a smaller feeding station

The Squirrel Buster Mini applies the same broad weight-activated idea in a smaller format. It is a better fit where a full-size feeder would be too heavy, visually intrusive, or unnecessarily large for the number of birds visiting.

A compact feeder also limits how much seed can sit exposed at one time. That can be useful when bird activity is modest, because less unused food is available to become damp, stale, or contaminated. The trade-off is more frequent refilling if your yard attracts a large flock.

Use the Mini for a balcony, small yard, lighter hanging support, or a household that wants to test squirrel-resistant feeding without committing to a large-capacity station. It should still be mounted securely and cleaned regularly.

3. Droll Yankees Yankee Flipper: best premium motorized feeder

The Droll Yankees Yankee Flipper is the most mechanically sophisticated option in this group. The tested design holds 5 pounds of seed and has four feeding ports. A rechargeable battery powers a rotating perch ring; when a heavy animal activates the mechanism, the perch spins and discourages it from feeding. The feeder uses a UV-stabilized polycarbonate tube and a powder-coated metal base.

That active deterrent comes with responsibilities the passive Brome designs do not have. You need to recharge the battery, keep the mechanism functioning, and hang the feeder from a support strong enough to carry its filled weight. A full Yankee Flipper can be heavy enough to make a weak shepherd’s hook droop.

Choose it when squirrels are exceptionally persistent and you value an active deterrent more than the lowest maintenance. Install it on a sturdy pole or heavy-duty hanging support, and check the charging routine before making it your only feeder.

4. Brome Squirrel Solution 200: best for a Brome-style passive deterrent

The Brome Squirrel Solution 200 is another weight-activated feeder in Brome’s squirrel-resistant family. Its appeal is the same basic principle as the Plus: it does not require a motor or a power source, and access is intended to change when a heavier animal loads the perch.

This type of feeder is usually easier to live with than a motorized model, but it is not maintenance-free. Seed ports, perches, and internal surfaces still collect dust, hulls, and moisture. Regular disassembly and drying are important, especially after rain or in humid weather.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the Squirrel Solution 200 if you want Brome’s weight-activated approach but the Plus’s current size, price, or availability does not suit your setup. Verify the exact capacity and dimensions of the version being sold before choosing a mounting point.

5. More Birds Squirrel-X Double Suet Caged Bird Feeder: best caged suet feeder

The More Birds Squirrel-X is a specialized double-suet feeder, not a substitute for a general seed feeder. It is built around suet cakes and uses an outer cage to make the food more accessible to smaller birds while limiting larger animals.

The format is useful for attracting birds that prefer suet, particularly when you want to offer a high-energy food in cold weather. Its narrower purpose is also its limitation: do not buy it expecting a hopper or tube feeder that can hold loose sunflower seed or mixed seed.

Because suet can soften, melt, or become rancid in warm weather, place the feeder in an appropriate shaded location and inspect the food regularly. Remove old or spoiled cakes rather than topping them off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. WoodLink Absolute Squirrel-Resistant Bird Feeder: best high-capacity post-mounted feeder

The WoodLink Absolute is the capacity choice. The tested design is listed with a 12-pound capacity and uses a weighted-perch and baffle arrangement intended to restrict access when a squirrel loads the feeding area.

A large hopper reduces refill trips, which is convenient for a busy household or a yard with many birds. But the same capacity creates two practical demands: the post and mounting point must be genuinely sturdy, and seed should not sit forgotten for long periods. If bird activity is low, a smaller feeder may keep food fresher and be easier to clean.

Choose the WoodLink Absolute when you want a permanent feeding station and can install it on a stable post. It is less suitable for a thin shepherd’s hook or a temporary hanging setup that was not designed for a fully loaded feeder.

FEED GARDEN Bird Feeder for Outdoors Hanging, 13" 6 Ports, Clear Tube
  • BUILT FOR SMALL SONGBIRDS — AND IT KEEPS THE BIG ONES OUT: Six small ports with 1.4" perches are sized for finches, chickadees, sparrows and nuthatches. Larger birds like blue jays, grackles and cardinals can't get a grip, so they stop raiding the tube and flinging the small seed on the ground to get at the big kernels. If you want cardinals or woodpeckers too, pair this with a platform or hopper feeder — this one is deliberately the small-bird station.
  • WIDE LIFT-TOP + SEE-THROUGH TUBE — REFILL IN SECONDS: Lift the metal lid straight up and pour; the opening is wide enough that you are not funnelling seed through a narrow neck. The clear tube shows the level from across the yard, so you refill before it runs empty instead of checking by opening it. Holds 1.5lb of sunflower, safflower or mixed seed — a small tube on purpose: seed gets eaten before it can sit and go stale.
  • HOW TO CLEAN IT: The lid lifts off and the tube is clear, so you can see exactly what needs cleaning. The base is fixed — not removable — so here is what works: tip the feeder upside down and tap to empty packed seed, run a bottle brush or pipe cleaner in through the ports, rinse, then stand it upside down until fully dry before refilling. Do this every 2-3 refills and after any spell of wet weather, so damp seed never sits at the bottom.
  • METAL LID, BASE AND PORTS: The lid, base, perches and all six port surrounds are metal, so beaks and claws land on metal rather than thin plastic; the seed tube itself is clear polycarbonate, which is what lets you see the level. Note: this is not a squirrel-proof feeder — the ports are open and a determined squirrel can reach seed. If squirrels are a problem in your yard, hang it from a pole with a baffle, which is what owners who have no squirrel trouble do.
  • HANG IT WHERE YOU CAN WATCH — POLE, BRANCH OR SHEPHERD'S HOOK (POLE NOT INCLUDED): The metal hanger fits a standard shepherd's hook, deck pole or tree branch. Most owners hang it within sight of a kitchen or living-room window — finches find a new feeder within days, and you get the show from inside. Works all four seasons, with the busiest months being late autumn and winter when wild food runs short. A ready gift for a parent, grandparent or anyone who watches birds.

7. Twinkle Star Wild Bird Feeder: best budget-oriented option

The Twinkle Star Wild Bird Feeder is the affordable option identified in the research, and The Spruce’s indexed testing description indicates that it was tested for more than a year. That makes it relevant to shoppers who want an inexpensive way to start feeding birds rather than a specialized squirrel-control system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its value depends on the exact model and on your expectations. A budget hanging feeder can be a sensible first purchase, but it should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a weight-activated, caged, or motorized squirrel-resistant feeder. If squirrels are your principal problem, compare the Twinkle Star’s construction and access design with the Brome or Droll Yankees options before deciding.

Confirm the current product dimensions, capacity, material details, and availability at the time of purchase. For a budget feeder, a sturdy hook, weather-protected placement, and an easy cleaning routine can matter as much as the initial price.

How to choose the right bird feeder

Start with the food

  • Loose seed: Tube and hopper feeders are the general-purpose choices. Sunflower-heavy mixes often attract a broad range of backyard birds, though the right seed depends on local species.
  • Suet: Use a suet cage such as the More Birds Squirrel-X rather than trying to adapt a seed feeder.
  • Nyjer or thistle: A specialized finch feeder is generally more appropriate than a standard hopper. None of the documented picks should be treated as universal for every food type.

Match the squirrel strategy to the problem

Design How it works Trade-offs
Weight-activated Perch movement closes or restricts access when a heavier animal lands Passive and generally convenient, but installation and individual animal behavior affect results
Caged A physical outer cage limits access to the food Useful for suet and smaller birds, but not a general solution for loose seed
Motorized A powered mechanism moves or rotates the perch when triggered Active deterrence, but requires charging and a strong support
Baffle or weighted perch Perch pressure or a surrounding baffle makes access difficult Can support high capacity, but adds installation and weight considerations

No feeder is absolutely squirrel-proof in every yard. A determined squirrel may exploit a nearby branch, a short hanging distance, spilled seed, or an installation that does not match the manufacturer’s intended setup. Place the feeder away from launch points where possible, and clean up seed beneath it.

Consider capacity and filled weight together

Capacity is convenient only when it matches bird activity and mounting strength. The 12-pound WoodLink Absolute and 5-pound Yankee Flipper become substantially heavier once filled. A large feeder hung from a flexible shepherd’s hook may lean, swing, or fall. A smaller feeder can be the better choice if you have a light support, fewer visiting birds, or limited time to monitor old seed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prioritize cleaning access

Look for a feeder that can be opened far enough to remove old seed and scrub the interior. Narrow tubes, decorative mesh, and hidden corners can trap damp food. A feeder that is slightly less attractive but easy to empty, wash, rinse, and dry is often the better long-term choice.

Placement: protect birds and the feeder

Mount the feeder on a strong pole or hang it from a support rated for its filled weight. Keep it far enough from walls, fences, and branches that squirrels cannot easily leap onto it, while also giving birds nearby cover. Shrubs or brush can provide an escape route when predators appear.

Window placement requires a specific compromise. Audubon advises placing feeders either very close to windows or at least 30 feet away. A feeder in the intermediate zone can give a bird enough speed to collide with glass but not enough distance to react. Nearby cover can also help birds move safely around the feeding area.

Do not place a large feeder where a falling unit could injure people, damage property, or land in a walkway. Check hooks, chains, poles, and fasteners periodically, especially after high winds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cleaning and bird-health routine

Audubon’s guidance uses cleaning approximately every two weeks as a starting point, with more frequent cleaning in hot, humid, wet, or disease-affected conditions. The calendar is only a baseline: visible debris, wet seed, mold, or sick birds are reasons to clean sooner.

  1. Empty the feeder completely. Discard damp, moldy, caked, or questionable seed rather than mixing it with fresh food.
  2. Remove visible hulls and debris before sanitizing.
  3. Scrub the feeder with warm soapy water. A long-handled bottle brush or bird-feeder cleaning brush can help reach narrow tubes and ports.
  4. Sanitize according to the product and public-health guidance. Audubon describes a solution of nine parts water to one part bleach in one cleaning guide.
  5. Rinse thoroughly so no soap or disinfectant residue remains.
  6. Allow every part to dry completely before refilling. Reassemble only when the interior is dry.
  7. Clear spilled seed, hulls, and droppings from the ground beneath the feeder. Wet debris can contribute to disease concerns and may attract rodents.

If sick or dead birds appear, avoid unnecessary handling and contact local wildlife authorities or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for current regional guidance. Disease recommendations can change during local outbreaks. Temporarily removing feeders may be advised in some situations, so follow current local instructions rather than relying on a universal rule.

Which feeder should you buy?

Choose the Brome Squirrel Buster Plus for the best balance of squirrel deterrence, usability, durability, and value in a general seed feeder. Choose the Brome Mini for a smaller station, the Yankee Flipper for premium motorized deterrence, and the WoodLink Absolute when high capacity and post mounting are priorities. The More Birds Squirrel-X makes sense specifically for suet. The Twinkle Star is the sensible starting point when purchase price is the main constraint, provided your expectations and squirrel pressure are modest.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Weight-activated, caged, motorized, and baffled designs can deter squirrels, but results depend on placement, mounting, nearby launch points, and the behavior of individual animals. “Squirrel-resistant” is more accurate than “squirrel-proof.”

Are any bird feeders completely squirrel-proof?

Use approximately every two weeks as a starting point, and clean more often during hot, humid, wet, or disease-affected conditions. Remove visible debris, scrub, sanitize as directed, rinse thoroughly, and let the feeder dry completely before refilling.

How often should a bird feeder be cleaned?

Choose capacity based on bird activity and mounting strength. Large feeders reduce refill trips but are heavier when full and can allow seed to become stale if visits are infrequent. A smaller feeder may be safer and fresher for a light support or low-traffic yard.

How large should a bird feeder be?

Audubon advises placing feeders very close to windows or at least 30 feet away, rather than in the intermediate range. Nearby shrubs or brush can provide escape cover.

Where should a bird feeder go to reduce window collisions?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No. Tube and hopper feeders suit many loose-seed situations, suet cages are designed for suet cakes, and specialized finch feeders are generally better for nyjer or thistle. Multiple feeder formats may be needed for different species and foods.

Can one feeder attract every kind of bird?

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The best choice is the feeder whose format, capacity, squirrel strategy, mounting requirements, and cleaning routine fit your yard. For most general seed feeding in a squirrel-prone backyard, start with the Brome Squirrel Buster Plus; choose a caged suet feeder for suet, a high-capacity WoodLink for a permanent station, or the Yankee Flipper if active motorized deterrence justifies the extra charging and mounting requirements.
