Short answer: The best water filter depends on the problem you are trying to solve. For on-demand drinking and cooking water, the Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow is the strongest all-around under-sink option in this group. The Brita Everyday Elite is the simplest low-cost choice for renters and small households, while the AquaTru Countertop Water Purifier is the better fit for broad reverse-osmosis treatment without permanent plumbing work.
Large households may prefer the high-capacity PUR Plus 30-Cup Dispenser. Renters who have a compatible standard faucet should consider the Culligan Faucet-Mounted Advanced Water Filter. If water needs to be treated throughout the house, a professionally designed point-of-entry system such as the Leaf Home Water Solutions custom whole-house system is the appropriate category—but it should follow water testing, not replace it.

There is no universal “best” filter. A device that improves chlorine taste may not reduce lead, PFAS, bacteria, or other contaminants. Before buying, identify the contaminant or water-quality concern, then verify that the exact model carries a certification or documented reduction claim for it.

How to choose before you shop
The right format follows the way you use water and the result you need:
- For taste or odor: Start by reviewing your local water report, then look for an NSF/ANSI 42-certified carbon filter with the appropriate claim.
- For lead or another named health contaminant: Choose a product with an exact NSF/ANSI 53 reduction claim for that contaminant. “Multi-stage” and “advanced” are not substitutes for a specific claim.
- For PFAS: Check the exact product listing for a PFAS-reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58. Existing certification does not necessarily show that a product reduces PFAS to the newest EPA drinking-water limits.
- For broad treatment without plumbing: A countertop reverse-osmosis system is the most capable option in this selection, but it uses more space and creates wastewater.
- For low cost and no installation: A pitcher such as the Brita Everyday Elite is convenient, but it is a batch system and most pitcher filters are not designed to remove germs.
- For a large family: A high-capacity dispenser such as the PUR Plus can reduce constant refilling, provided you can tolerate its slow filtration speed.
- For a renter with a compatible faucet: A faucet-mounted unit avoids drilling and under-sink modifications.
- For private-well water or water used throughout the home: Begin with a water analysis and investigate point-of-entry treatment rather than buying a generic whole-house filter based only on taste.
What the reported testing considered
The underlying review says it evaluated more than 50 water filters over time using a combination of laboratory assessment and home testing. Its comparison included setup, capacity, pouring, filtration speed, reservoir volume, manual clarity, dishwasher safety, third-party contaminant information, certification review, filter lifespan, and estimated annual replacement cost.
Those findings answer practical questions—such as whether a reservoir is awkward to fill or whether a filter is slow—but they do not replace water-quality testing or certification verification. It is useful to separate the evidence into three categories:

- Certification evidence: the particular standard and contaminant-reduction claim attached to the exact model or configuration.
- Manufacturer or service claims: expected cartridge life, replacement intervals, custom-system capabilities, and maintenance schedules. These can vary with water quality and usage.
The 6 best water filters
1. Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow under-sink filter: best overall for on-demand water
Best for: Households that want filtered drinking and cooking water available from a dedicated dispenser, rather than waiting for a pitcher to fill.
The Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow under-sink filter is the strongest choice in this group for an installed point-of-use system. The cited review reports a three-stage design, a high flow rate, filter life of up to six months, and broad third-party contaminant coverage. Its certification verification included a PFAS-reduction claim for the reviewed configuration.
This is the format to choose when convenience at the sink matters. There is no reservoir to fill before cooking, and the system is designed to supply filtered water when you need it. The trade-off is installation: depending on the existing plumbing and included dispenser, installation may require drilling or other modifications. Renters should obtain permission before considering it.
The three-filter arrangement also takes up meaningful cabinet space. The review reports a relatively high annual replacement cost compared with simpler pitchers and dispensers, so the purchase decision should include the recurring cartridge expense—not just the initial unit price.
Certification warning: “NSF-certified” is not a blanket statement that every Aquasana configuration removes every contaminant. NSF certification applies to particular standards and reduction claims. Verify the exact model, filter configuration, and contaminant claim before buying, especially if PFAS, lead, or another named contaminant is the reason for the purchase.
2. Brita Everyday Elite pitcher: best budget and renter-friendly option
Best for: Renters, small households, and anyone who wants better-tasting water without tools, plumbing, or a permanent installation.
Rank #2
- WATER DISPENSER: One BPA-free, large 27-cup Brita UltraMax Filtered Water Dispenser includes one Standard filter to help remove impurities from your tap water
- CUTS OUT IMPURITIES: Brita water purifier dispenser cuts the taste and odor of chlorine and also reduces copper, mercury and other impurities
- SUSTAINABLE: By switching to a Brita water filter system, you can save money and replace up to 1,800 single-use plastic water bottles a year
- FRIDGE-FRIENDLY: Space-efficient Brita water dispenser is fridge-friendly, and it features an easy-locking lid and precision-pour spigot
- REPLACEMENT INDICATOR: Sticker filter indicator lets you know when it is time to change your Brita filter
The Brita Everyday Elite pitcher is the most approachable option here. The 10-cup pitcher requires no installation and can be moved easily between a rental, dormitory, office, or temporary home. In the cited review’s testing, it was among the fastest pitchers, taking about 38 seconds per cup.
The review also reports that Brita’s Elite cartridge is certified for more than 30 specified contaminants according to Brita’s certification information. That is useful coverage for a basic pitcher, but it should not be confused with universal purification. The exact claims still depend on the cartridge and the contaminant being tested.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe pitcher must be filled manually and hand-washed. The review cites an approximately six-month replacement interval, but actual life depends on usage and water conditions. A busy household may reach the capacity limit much sooner than a single user, and the pitcher occupies refrigerator space.
Activated-carbon pitcher filters are commonly used for taste, odor, and selected chemicals or metals. The CDC warns that most pitcher and refrigerator filters are not designed to remove germs. If the concern is bacteria, viruses, or another microbiological hazard, do not assume that a taste improvement means the water has been made safe.
Choose it when: you want the lowest-commitment option and your primary goal is taste or a specific contaminant covered by the cartridge’s documentation. Choose something else when you need continuous faucet access, broad reverse-osmosis treatment, or whole-house treatment.
3. AquaTru Countertop Water Purifier: best countertop reverse osmosis
Best for: Households that want broad contaminant reduction but cannot or do not want to install an under-sink system.
The AquaTru countertop reverse osmosis purifier brings a four-stage RO system to the counter. The cited review describes a glass carafe, a separate wastewater tank, and certification to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, and 401 for specified claims. It reports reduction of more than 80 contaminants in the reviewed configuration and more than 90% fluoride reduction.
That fluoride result may matter to readers specifically seeking fluoride reduction. It should be presented neutrally: fluoride is also associated with cavity prevention, so removing it is not automatically an advantage for every household. The relevant question is whether the treatment matches your water analysis, health guidance, and personal priorities.
The biggest benefit is capability without permanent plumbing. The main costs are counter space, a higher initial purchase price than a basic pitcher, cartridge and membrane maintenance, and the need to manage wastewater. RO separates water into treated and untreated streams. Depending on system design, EPA explains that a reverse-osmosis system may use roughly one gallon of water for every gallon treated, although actual performance varies.
The separate wastewater tank must be emptied after cycles. That is a small task compared with installing an under-sink system, but it is easy to overlook if you expect the device to operate like a pitcher. RO also removes minerals along with many contaminants, which can affect taste; do not add a mineral or alkaline accessory simply because of marketing language without checking compatibility and understanding what it changes.

4. PUR Plus 30-Cup Water Filter Dispenser: best for large households
Best for: Families and shared households that need more filtered water than a standard pitcher can hold.
The PUR Plus 30-Cup Water Filter Dispenser is built around volume. The cited review reports a 30-cup capacity, a dishwasher-safe container, a change-filter light, and certification to NSF standards 42, 53, and 401 for specified contaminant claims.
The capacity is its defining advantage. It can supply a refrigerator or countertop with a larger reserve than a conventional pitcher, reducing the number of fills required each day. The problem is speed: the review identifies slow filtration as the principal usability drawback and recommends filling it ahead of time.
That trade-off is manageable if you establish a routine—fill the dispenser after breakfast or before bed, for example—but frustrating if several people need filtered water immediately. The large container also needs room in the refrigerator or on a stable counter, and its weight increases substantially when full.
The certification numbers need interpretation. NSF/ANSI 42 generally concerns aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor. NSF/ANSI 53 concerns specified health-effect contaminants, while NSF/ANSI 401 concerns specified emerging or incidental contaminants. None of those numbers alone means that the dispenser removes every contaminant in those categories. Confirm the exact claim for the PUR cartridge being used.
Choose it when: storage capacity matters more than speed. If you live alone or have little refrigerator space, the Brita pitcher is likely easier to live with. If you need broad RO treatment, the PUR dispenser is the wrong technology.
5. Culligan Faucet-Mounted Advanced Water Filter: best for compatible faucets and renters
Best for: Renters or homeowners who want filtered water directly from the faucet without drilling, tools, or an under-sink dispenser.

The Culligan faucet-mounted water filter uses a tool-free installation and a diverter that switches between filtered and unfiltered water. Keeping the filter off during activities such as washing dishes can preserve cartridge life and maintain normal faucet flow, while the filtered setting provides treated water for drinking and cooking.
The cited review reports testing to ANSI standards 42 and 53 for specified claims, including lead and chlorine. Verify the exact current listing and claim before purchase; certification to a standard does not establish reduction of every contaminant.
Compatibility is the critical buying check. According to the review, this unit is not compatible with pull-down spray faucets. It also makes the faucet bulkier, which can affect clearance, appearance, and how easily the handle or sprayer is used.

6. Leaf Home Water Solutions custom whole-house system: best for point-of-entry treatment
Best for: Households that want water treated before it reaches multiple fixtures, including showers, sinks, appliances, and drinking-water taps.
The Leaf Home Water Solutions custom whole-house system is different from the other five choices. It is a professionally designed service rather than one standardized retail model that every household receives in the same configuration. The process is based on a consultation and water test, with the equipment selected for the contaminants the home is intended to address.
That approach is potentially valuable for private-well owners, homes with a confirmed water-quality problem, or households concerned about water used throughout the property rather than only water consumed at one sink. The cited review describes a six-month home evaluation without operating problems, but that observation is not a guarantee for every water source, installation, or configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPerformance, installation requirements, service arrangements, maintenance, and price are household-specific. Ask for the water analysis, the exact equipment model, the target contaminants, the relevant certification claims, the maintenance schedule, and the expected replacement costs in writing. A generic promise of “cleaner water” is not enough.
Whole-house treatment also has a safety trade-off. The CDC explains that point-of-entry systems treat water before it is distributed through the home, but warns that removing chlorine or another disinfectant can allow more germs to grow in household plumbing. The treatment design therefore needs to account for the incoming water, the plumbing system, and whether a disinfectant residual is needed.
For a private well or rainwater system, begin with laboratory testing. For a public-water home, review the utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report first and use a point-of-entry system only when the water-quality concern justifies it.

- NSF/ANSI 42: Primarily covers aesthetic effects, such as chlorine taste and odor.
- NSF/ANSI 53: Covers specified health-effect contaminants, such as particular lead-reduction claims.
- NSF/ANSI 401: Covers specified emerging or incidental contaminants.
- NSF/ANSI 58: Applies to reverse-osmosis systems.
- NSF/ANSI 372: Primarily addresses lead content in product materials. It is not proof that a filter removes lead from water.
Always check the exact product listing and reduction claim. A system may be certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for one contaminant but have no certified claim for another. The same brand may sell several configurations with different cartridges, capacities, or certifications.
For PFAS, EPA advises looking for NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 certification with a specific PFAS-reduction claim. EPA also cautions that existing certification standards do not necessarily demonstrate reduction to the newest EPA drinking-water limits. Certification is useful evidence, but it should be interpreted alongside the water test and the contaminant concentration.
Do you need a water test?
Testing is the most reliable way to avoid buying the wrong technology. Taste, smell, and appearance cannot establish safety: harmful germs and chemicals may be invisible and odorless, while harmless minerals and compounds can create an unpleasant taste or smell.
If you receive public water, review the utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report. It provides information about regulated contaminants detected or monitored in the supplied water, although water quality can still vary within a building or between the utility and the household tap.
If you use a private well or rainwater system, test at least annually through a state-certified laboratory. Test sooner after flooding, repairs, changes in color, taste, or smell, or any change near the well or collection system. A home drinking-water test kit may be useful as an initial screening tool, but generic kits vary substantially in quality. Use certified laboratory testing for decisions involving health risks, a private well, or an expensive whole-house installation.
Maintenance and safe use
A water filter is not a set-and-forget appliance. Every format in this guide requires maintenance:
- Replace cartridges and membranes on schedule. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, while recognizing that heavy usage or poor incoming water can shorten the practical life.
- Do not wait for bad taste. A cartridge can be exhausted or overdue before the water tastes obviously different.
- Clean reservoirs and dispensers as directed. A damp, neglected container can become a place for microbial growth.
- Flush new cartridges and systems. Follow the installation instructions for initial flushing and any required startup cycles.
- Wear gloves when changing filters. The CDC advises washing hands after handling used cartridges or filter components.
- Keep untreated and treated water separate. This matters especially with RO systems, which produce a treated stream and a wastewater stream.
- Record the replacement date. A calendar reminder is more dependable than guessing based on taste or memory.
When a filter is overdue, its effectiveness may decline and the cartridge may support microbial growth. A filter also cannot correct a problem it was never designed to remove. If the water has suddenly changed in appearance, taste, or smell, investigate the source instead of simply installing a new cartridge.
Which one should you buy?
Use this final decision guide:
- Best overall for a dedicated drinking-water tap: Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow, if you can install it and accept cabinet space and cartridge costs.
- Best inexpensive no-install option: Brita Everyday Elite, for taste and the contaminants specifically covered by its Elite cartridge.
- Best broad countertop treatment: AquaTru, if RO’s wastewater, maintenance, mineral removal, and counter footprint are acceptable.
- Best for high volume: PUR Plus 30-Cup Dispenser, if you can fill it in advance and have room for it.
- Best faucet-mounted option: Culligan, provided your faucet is compatible and you are comfortable with a bulkier fixture.
- Best whole-home approach: Leaf Home’s custom point-of-entry system, but only after testing and a clear explanation of the exact treatment design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do pitcher water filters remove bacteria and viruses?
Usually not. The CDC warns that most pitcher and refrigerator filters are designed for taste, odor, and selected chemicals or metals rather than germs. If bacteria, viruses, or another microbiological hazard is a concern, use water testing and a treatment method specifically documented for that hazard.

Is reverse osmosis better than a carbon filter?
Neither is universally better. Reverse osmosis generally offers broader reduction for many dissolved contaminants, but it costs more, requires more maintenance, removes minerals, occupies more space, and creates wastewater. Carbon filtration is simpler and often sufficient for taste, odor, and a named contaminant covered by the cartridge’s certification.
What does NSF/ANSI 53 mean on a water filter?
NSF/ANSI 53 covers specified health-effect contaminant claims. It does not mean the filter removes every health-related contaminant. Check the exact model’s certification listing to see whether it has a claim for lead, PFAS, or the particular contaminant you are concerned about.
How often should private-well water be tested?
Test private-well and rainwater systems at least annually through a state-certified laboratory. Test sooner after flooding, repairs, or changes in color, taste, or smell. Public-water users should review the utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report and investigate any household-specific concerns separately.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy for a documented water-quality need, not for the largest number of filtration stages. Choose the Aquasana for convenient installed access, Brita for simple low-cost filtration, AquaTru for countertop reverse osmosis, PUR for high-volume dispensing, Culligan for a compatible faucet, and a professionally designed whole-house system only when testing shows that point-of-entry treatment is warranted. Replace cartridges on schedule and verify the exact contaminant claim for the exact model.
