The LG WM6500HWA washer and DLEX6500W electric dryer are the best overall stackable pair for most households because they combine full-size capacity, strong reported cleaning performance, smart features, and the ability to replace either appliance separately. If you want a factory-integrated tower instead, choose the LG WKEX200HBA WashTower. For a 24-inch-wide laundry closet, Miele is the most practical compact choice; for stain-heavy laundry, Electrolux is the stronger specialist pick.

These six recommendations are not all the same type of product. The list includes modular front-load pairs that require a compatible stacking kit, factory-integrated laundry towers, and a unitized top-load laundry center. That distinction affects installation, service, capacity, and what happens when only the washer or dryer eventually needs replacement.

Quick comparison

Pick Configuration Washer / dryer capacity Best for Main limitation
LG WM6500HWA + DLEX6500W Separate front-load appliances 5.0 / 7.4 cu. ft. Best overall modular pair Stacking kit and dryer are separate purchases
GE GFW655SSVWW + GFD65ESSVWW Separate front-load appliances 5.0 / 7.8 cu. ft. Best value and odor management Some reviewers found the washer loud
LG WKEX200HBA WashTower Integrated front-load tower 4.5 / 7.4 cu. ft. Best one-piece design Less replacement flexibility
Miele compact stacked set Separate compact appliances 2.26 / approximately 4.3 cu. ft. Small apartments and closets Not designed for large household loads
GE GUD27ESSMWW Unitized Spacemaker Unitized top-load center 3.8 / 5.9 cu. ft. Top-load loading preference Temporarily out of stock and no longer manufactured
Electrolux ELFW7437AW + ELFE7437AW Separate front-load appliances 4.5 / 8.0 cu. ft. Stain-focused washing Some cycles can take up to two hours; no Wi-Fi

Capacities and model details are for the specific models identified above. Prices, promotions, inventory, model suffixes, and installation requirements can change during 2026.

1. LG WM6500HWA washer + DLEX6500W dryer: best overall modular pair

The LG WM6500HWA and DLEX6500W are the best choice when you want full-size laundry performance without locking yourself into a single integrated tower. The 5.0-cubic-foot washer and 7.4-cubic-foot electric dryer provide useful capacity for families, bedding, and routine weekly loads, while the two-machine design means the washer and dryer can generally be replaced independently.

Good Housekeeping selected this LG combination as its best overall stackable set. In the publication’s reported washing-machine testing, the washer earned the highest overall score in its recent evaluation. Its Quick cycle took 16 minutes, and its Normal cycle handled an 8-pound load in just over 30 minutes. The washer also removed soil effectively, although the testing noted that it was not the gentlest model evaluated.

LG lists the WM6500HWA as an ENERGY STAR front-load washer with TurboWash 360, AI DD fabric sensing, steam, Allergiene, and ThinQ connectivity. The 27-by-39-by-33 1/8-inch footprint is important when planning a closet: stacking changes the height, but not the washer’s floor footprint. The matching DLEX6500W dryer adds AI Sensor Dry, TurboSteam, ThinQ alerts, and FlowSense indicators for duct and lint conditions.

Important testing qualification: Good Housekeeping did not formally test the exact DLEX6500W dryer as part of this pairing. Its recommendation used results from a similar LG dryer, while the washer was the exact model evaluated. That makes this a strong, evidence-backed combination—not a claim that every component in the exact pair underwent the same test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation note: The dryer and stacking hardware are separate purchases. LG identifies the LG KSTK4 stacking kit for the WM6500H washer family, but confirm compatibility with the exact washer and dryer model suffix before ordering. Never substitute a generic bracket or place one appliance on another without a manufacturer-approved kit.

Best for: households that want large capacity, smart features, and the ability to replace one appliance without automatically discarding the other.

Watch-outs: verify the 240-volt electric-dryer circuit, vent route, rear clearance, door swing, stacking-kit compatibility, and delivery path before purchase.

2. GE GFW655SSVWW washer + GFD65ESSVWW dryer: best value modular pair

GE’s GFW655SSVWW washer and GFD65ESSVWW electric dryer are the value-oriented choice for buyers who want full-size capacity plus features aimed at preventing the damp, musty odor that can develop in front-load washers. The washer is rated at 5.0 cubic feet and the dryer at 7.8 cubic feet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good Housekeeping selected this GE UltraFresh Vent System combination as its best-value choice. The washer’s SmartDispense reservoir can hold enough detergent for up to 32 loads, reducing the need to measure detergent every time. Its fresh-air venting and Microban-treated moisture-prone components are designed to reduce moisture and odor buildup. The set also supports app and voice-control functions, and the dryer can use information from the washer to help select a suitable drying cycle.

GE’s product information identifies the GFD65ESSVWW as a 7.8-cubic-foot ENERGY STAR smart front-load electric dryer with Powersteam, Sanitize, and SmartHQ Wi-Fi functionality. Across the applicable GE product family, the relevant features include UltraFresh Vent System, OdorBlock, Microban, SmartDispense, reversible doors, Sanitize, and Wi-Fi controls. Confirm that each feature appears on the precise model suffix you are buying rather than assuming every feature carries across the entire family.

This is a modular pair, not one permanently integrated cabinet. That gives it a useful long-term advantage: a failed washer does not necessarily require replacement of a working dryer. It also means the washer, dryer, and stacking kit must be treated as a compatibility set during installation planning.

Best for: buyers who want full-size machines, odor-management features, and a lower-cost alternative to a premium integrated tower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: some reviewers found the washer loud. Check the exact GE stacking-kit requirement, current inventory, floor leveling, and the retailer’s delivery and installation terms.

3. LG WKEX200HBA WashTower: best integrated single unit

The LG WashTower WKEX200HBA is the best choice if your priority is a clean one-piece appearance and controls that are easier to reach than the usual controls mounted at the top of a stacked dryer. It combines a 4.5-cubic-foot washer and 7.4-cubic-foot electric dryer in one factory-integrated vertical appliance, with a centrally positioned control panel between the two sections.

Good Housekeeping named the WashTower its best single unit after evaluating stain removal, controls, steam performance, loading access, and cycle performance. The publication also reported that its test machine remained functional and odor-free after five years of use. That is useful long-term evidence, but it is still a report about the tested machine—not a guarantee for every installation or future production run.

LG lists Center Control, AI Fabric Sensors, Smart Learner, Smart Pairing, TurboWash 360, Allergiene, TurboSteam, ThinQ connectivity, and tempered-glass doors. The integrated format can make the laundry area look less pieced together and may be a better ergonomic fit for people who do not want to reach above shoulder height for dryer controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is replacement flexibility. The washer and dryer sections can be separated for repairs, but they are not two independently purchased consumer appliances. If one section reaches the end of its useful life, replacing only that section may not be practical. An integrated tower is therefore a design and convenience choice, not simply a modular pair with a different control panel.

Best for: homeowners who value centralized controls, a coordinated appearance, and a shorter-feeling, purpose-built tower over independent replacement options.

Watch-outs: confirm that WKEX200HBA is the electric version you need, and check the exact finish, depth, door swing, clearance, warranty, and service coverage. LG’s displayed price and promotions are time-sensitive and should not be treated as an evergreen 2026 price.

4. Miele compact stacked washer and electric dryer: best for small spaces

Miele’s compact stacked washer-and-dryer set is the strongest option when the laundry area is roughly 24 inches wide and a full-size pair simply will not fit. The appliances are approximately 23.5 inches wide. The washer has a 2.26-cubic-foot capacity, while the dryer is approximately 4.3 cubic feet.

Good Housekeeping selected the Miele compact set for very small laundry spaces. Its reported testing found effective stain removal and whitening of cotton swatches in under an hour. The set also offers specialty cycles, self-dispensing detergent, SoftSteam, and a honeycomb dryer drum.

The capacity limitation matters more here than with any other recommendation. These drums are suitable for apartments, condos, and small closets, but they are not intended to handle the same volume as a 5.0-cubic-foot family washer. A large comforter, a week of sports uniforms, or several towels may require smaller loads or additional cycles.

The available research identifies a Miele product family rather than one confirmed current U.S. model number. Before ordering, verify the exact U.S. SKUs, voltage, whether the dryer is vented or heat-pump ventless, required stacking hardware, depth, service coverage, and retailer availability. Compact appliances can have installation requirements that differ substantially from full-size North American models.

Best for: apartments, condos, accessory dwelling units, and closets where a roughly 24-inch-wide footprint matters more than maximum load size.

Watch-outs: do not compare the Miele’s capacity directly with the full-size models without accounting for the smaller drum. Confirm every model number and electrical requirement before delivery.

5. GE GUD27ESSMWW Unitized Spacemaker: best top-loading stacked center, only if you can find legitimate remaining stock

The GE GUD27ESSMWW Unitized Spacemaker is the best fit for shoppers who specifically prefer a top-loading washer but need a vertical laundry center. It combines a 3.8-cubic-foot top-load washer and 5.9-cubic-foot dryer in a single cabinet. The washer has an agitator, 11 wash cycles, and load-sensing water adjustment.

Its published dimensions are 26.75 inches wide, 75.875 inches high, and 30.875 inches deep. The top-loading design allows loading without opening a front door at floor level, which some users find more comfortable. It also avoids the need to stack two separately purchased appliances.

Availability is the decisive caveat in 2026: GE’s official product information says the GUD27ESSMWW is temporarily out of stock and no longer being manufactured. Treat it as a worthwhile configuration only if you locate legitimate remaining inventory with a clear warranty and return policy. It should not be presented as a broadly available current recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Like other unitized centers, the washer and dryer are not independently replaceable in the same way as a modular front-load pair. Good Housekeeping also reported noise concerns. Check the cabinet condition, model plate, warranty status, installation requirements, and availability of service and parts when considering remaining stock.

Best for: buyers committed to a top-load washer who can verify genuine remaining inventory and accept the replacement limitations of a unitized center.

Watch-outs: discontinued status, limited inventory, reported noise, smaller capacity than the full-size front-load picks, and no independent washer-or-dryer replacement path.

6. Electrolux ELFW7437AW washer + ELFE7437AW dryer: best for stain-focused washing

The Electrolux ELFW7437AW washer and ELFE7437AW electric dryer are the best choice for households that regularly deal with grass, athletic wear, food, and other stubborn stains. The washer is 4.5 cubic feet and the dryer is 8.0 cubic feet, giving the pair a large dryer for bulky or high-volume loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good Housekeeping selected this Electrolux SmartBoost pair as its best stain-removal option. SmartBoost premixes detergent with water before the mixture enters the drum, and the publication reported that this helped the washer perform exceptionally in stain-removal testing. Other useful details include StainSoak, a reversible door, an interior light, a 15-minute wash cycle, a detergent-pack compartment, and a 15-minute quick cycle on the dryer.

The emphasis is on cleaning performance rather than app control. Good Housekeeping reported that some wash cycles can run as long as two hours and that the set lacks Wi-Fi remote monitoring. Those are not deal-breakers for a stain-focused buyer, but they matter if you prioritize short cycles or want to start and monitor laundry from a phone.

Electrolux’s installation guidance states that front-load washer-and-dryer purchases intended for stacking require a stacking kit. Plan the water connections, drain, electric or gas connection, venting, and clearances before delivery, and verify the exact current model suffix and kit rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “stackable” label.

Best for: families who prioritize stain removal and a large dryer over Wi-Fi features or consistently short wash cycles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: long specialty cycles, no Wi-Fi remote monitoring, separate stacking hardware, and model-specific installation requirements.

How these stackable washers and dryers were evaluated

The performance claims in this guide come from Good Housekeeping’s reported Cleaning Lab testing and manufacturer specifications; they are not claims of testing performed by this site. Good Housekeeping says its washer testing follows Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers standards. The lab uses pre-stained fabric strips, color measurements to quantify soil removal, cotton swatches with pre-cut holes to assess fraying, observations of tangling, and usability evaluations.

For dryers, the lab uses a controlled climate chamber, standardized wet loads, platform-balance measurements, temperature-sensitive strips, and evaluations of drying speed, tangling, and wrinkles after steam or refresh cycles. Because exact model pairings are not always tested together, a reported result for one appliance or a similar model should not be converted into a claim that every exact washer-dryer combination received identical testing.

Modular pair, integrated tower, or unitized center?

Choose a modular pair when replacement flexibility matters

A modular stackable set consists of two separately purchased front-load appliances joined by a compatible stacking kit. The principal advantage is service and replacement flexibility: if the washer fails before the dryer, you can generally replace the washer alone, provided the new appliance remains compatible with the existing stack and kit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Modular pairs also give you more combinations. Depending on the brand and product family, you may be able to choose electric or gas drying, vented or ventless drying, different capacities, and different finishes. The disadvantage is planning: compatibility, kit availability, door swing, controls, venting, and electrical requirements all have to be checked separately.

Choose an integrated tower for simpler design and centralized controls

An integrated tower is engineered and assembled as one vertical product, although the washer and dryer still have separate drums and operating sections. It avoids the uncertainty of matching two retail SKUs and usually gives the laundry area a more unified appearance. The central control location is also a practical ergonomic advantage.

The compromise is that the two sections are not normally treated as independently replaceable appliances. Repairs may be possible on either section, but a future replacement can be more complicated and expensive than replacing one machine in a modular pair.

Choose a unitized laundry center only for a specific top-load or space requirement

A unitized center is a single cabinet containing a top-load washer and dryer. It can be a good fit for shoppers who do not want a front-load washer or who prefer the loading height, but it generally offers less capacity and less replacement flexibility than a full-size modular pair. Current availability is especially important: the GE GUD27ESSMWW, the top-load pick in this guide, is listed by GE as no longer manufactured.

Installation checklist before you order

  1. Measure the opening, not just the advertised space. Record the narrowest width, total available height, depth to the wall, baseboard or trim obstructions, overhead shelves, and the washer and dryer door-swing area. Also measure hallways, stairs, turns, and the entry door. A machine that fits the closet may still be impossible to deliver into it.
  2. Allow for the stacked height. Whirlpool’s general sizing guidance places many stacked front-load pairs at roughly 24 to 28 inches wide, about 78 inches tall when stacked, and approximately 32 to 34 inches deep. These are planning ranges, not installation dimensions for every model. The exact manual controls.
  3. Plan rear clearance. Whirlpool recommends allowing roughly six inches behind the machines for hoses, vents, and electrical connections. The amount required varies by model and by whether the dryer is vented, so measure from the finished wall to the deepest point of the installed appliance and connections.
  4. Match the stacking kit to the exact models. A modular pair is not automatically stackable merely because both appliances are front-load machines. LG identifies KSTK4 for the WM6500H washer family; Electrolux requires a stacking kit for a front-load pair intended for stacking. GE requirements must be confirmed for the exact pair. Keep the kit instructions available for the installer.
  5. Confirm the dryer fuel source. In the United States, a conventional electric dryer generally requires a 240-volt connection. A gas dryer requires an appropriate gas supply and still needs electrical power. The voltage, outlet, breaker, gas connection, and installation clearances are model-specific.
  6. Confirm vented versus ventless drying. A conventional vented dryer needs a properly routed exhaust duct. A ventless heat-pump dryer can expand placement options, but it may have different cycle times, maintenance tasks, and electrical requirements. Do not assume that a compact or European-style dryer uses the same vent arrangement as a full-size vented model.
  7. Verify water and drainage. Confirm hot- and cold-water requirements, shutoff access, drain location, hose routing, and whether a drain pan is permitted or required by your local installation conditions. Follow the installation manual and local code.
  8. Check the floor and leveling plan. Stacked appliances must sit level and be secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions. An uneven floor can contribute to vibration, noise, poor spinning, or walking. Anti-vibration pads may help in some installations, but they are not automatically required and should not replace proper leveling.
  9. Arrange professional delivery when access is difficult. A stacked installation involves heavy appliances, narrow clearances, electrical or gas connections, and venting. A qualified installer can also identify code, clearance, and service-access problems before the machines are trapped inside a closet.

For installation preparation, optional items such as a washer drain pan, appliance dolly for washer dryer, anti-vibration pads for front-load washer, and dryer vent cleaning kit can be useful, but none should be treated as universally required. Compatibility, floor type, local rules, and the manufacturer’s instructions determine whether each accessory makes sense.

Vented, ventless, electric, or gas: the choice that changes the installation

Most of the exact dryer models highlighted here are electric, including the LG DLEX6500W, LG WKEX200HBA tower, GE GFD65ESSVWW, and Electrolux ELFE7437AW. An electric dryer usually requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit. A gas dryer needs both a suitable gas connection and electrical power, so “gas” does not mean that no electrical planning is needed.

Vented dryers remove warm, damp air through an exhaust duct. The duct route, termination, bends, and rear clearance affect installation. Keep the duct clean and have it inspected or cleaned when airflow is poor, drying times increase, or lint accumulates unusually quickly.

Ventless heat-pump dryers condense moisture rather than exhausting it through a conventional exterior duct. They can be useful where an exhaust route is difficult, especially in some compact installations, but they are not a universal upgrade: cycle times, filter or condenser maintenance, moisture handling, and electrical requirements differ. Confirm the exact dryer technology before designing the room around it.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the LG WM6500HWA + DLEX6500W if you want the strongest all-around modular recommendation, a 5.0-cubic-foot washer, smart features, and independent replacement potential.
  • Choose the GE GFW655SSVWW + GFD65ESSVWW if value, full-size capacity, SmartDispense, and front-load odor-management features are more important than absolute quietness.
  • Choose the LG WKEX200HBA WashTower if you want one coordinated appliance with controls in the middle and accept reduced replacement flexibility.
  • Choose Miele if the laundry opening is about 24 inches wide and you are willing to trade capacity for compact dimensions and reported cleaning performance.
  • Choose the GE GUD27ESSMWW only if a top-load center is essential and you find verified remaining stock with a clear warranty. Its discontinued status makes it a conditional recommendation in 2026.
  • Choose the Electrolux ELFW7437AW + ELFE7437AW if removing difficult stains is your main priority and long cycles and the lack of Wi-Fi are acceptable.

Care and service considerations

Front-load washers benefit from following the manufacturer’s cleaning and door-care instructions, especially in a tightly enclosed laundry closet where ventilation may be limited. Features such as UltraFresh Vent System, OdorBlock, Microban, and Allergiene are model-specific design or cycle features; they should not be treated as a substitute for routine maintenance or as proof that one appliance will clean better in every situation.

Use detergent recommended for the appliance, particularly when using automatic dispensing. If you choose a washer with SmartDispense, an appropriate HE laundry detergent is the relevant consumable category; follow the washer’s dosing instructions rather than adding extra detergent to compensate for a difficult stain. Electrolux’s SmartBoost and StainSoak features are designed around the washer’s own cycle instructions, and its detergent-pack compartment does not eliminate the need to follow the care label and product directions.

Before buying, check whether an authorized service provider covers your area, how warranty service is initiated, and whether the retailer or manufacturer handles installation problems. For a difficult closet or a replacement project, compare the actual terms for washer dryer installation service, appliance haul-away, stacked washer dryer repair, and dryer-vent cleaning service. Availability and coverage vary by location; no third-party service should be assumed to be authorized simply because it appears in a retailer’s checkout flow.

Finally, save the model numbers, stacking-kit instructions, purchase receipt, installation documentation, and warranty information. Those details can determine whether a later repair or replacement is straightforward.

Sources and testing note

This guide draws on Good Housekeeping’s reported Cleaning Lab evaluations and the manufacturer specifications and installation guidance identified in the research for LG, GE, Electrolux, and Whirlpool. The cited editorial testing is third-party reporting. Product prices, promotions, availability, service coverage, and model suffixes are volatile, so verify them on the current manufacturer and retailer pages before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any front-load washer and dryer be stacked together?

No. Both appliances must be approved for stacking with each other, and the correct manufacturer-specific stacking kit must be used. Front-load design alone does not establish compatibility.

Is a stackable washer and dryer better than a laundry tower?

Neither is universally better. A modular pair offers more replacement flexibility and often more configuration choices. An integrated or unitized tower simplifies the appearance and can simplify matching and installation, but replacing one section later may be more difficult.

Do stackable dryers need a 240-volt outlet?

Most conventional electric dryers in the United States do require a 240-volt connection, while gas dryers require a suitable gas supply and still use electricity. Exact electrical requirements are model-specific. Ventless heat-pump dryers may use a different electrical setup, so check the installation manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How tall is a stacked washer and dryer?

Many full-size stacked front-load pairs are roughly 78 inches tall, but the actual height depends on the appliances and stacking kit. Measure the exact models, ceiling, trim, shelving, and service clearance before ordering.

Can I replace only the washer in a stacked pair?

Usually, yes, with a modular pair, provided the replacement remains compatible with the existing dryer and stacking kit. An integrated tower or unitized center generally does not offer the same independent replacement path.

Is the GE GUD27ESSMWW still a good buy in 2026?

Only conditionally. GE’s official information says the model is temporarily out of stock and no longer being manufactured. Consider it only when legitimate remaining inventory, warranty coverage, service, and parts availability are confirmed.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the LG WM6500HWA and DLEX6500W for the best balance of capacity, reported performance, features, and replaceability. Choose the LG WashTower for an integrated design, Miele when width is the limiting factor, and Electrolux when stain removal matters most. Before committing, measure the finished space, confirm the stacking kit and dryer fuel or venting, and verify current inventory and local service.
