It offers the strongest combination of dirt capture, moisture control, durability, size options, and indoor/outdoor flexibility.
But it is not the right mat for every entry. Porte + Hall’s The Insider is better when door clearance is tight, IKEA’s TRIABO is the value choice for a small apartment entrance, and Mohawk’s Waffle Grid is the more practical heavy-duty option for wet or muddy conditions. | Best budget | IKEA TRIABO Welcome Mat | Low price, sturdy coir construction, quick drying | Small and may shed fibers |

| Best heavy-duty | Mohawk Home Waffle Grid Recycled Rubber Door Mat | Deep ridges, low profile, stable recycled-rubber backing | Dark, utilitarian appearance and limited decorative appeal |
BHG’s rankings come from six months of testing in homes, not from a standardized laboratory test. Testers placed mats in both high- and low-traffic areas, exposed them to weather and sunlight, and cleaned them according to manufacturer instructions. They evaluated absorption, drying, slip resistance, backing, size, durability, appearance, cleaning, and value. The published test did not provide a standardized absorption volume or a controlled numerical score for every mat, so the results are best understood as extended real-world observations.

For a busy household, this is the safest all-purpose recommendation. The raised border helps contain water and mud, while the three-dimensional surface catches dirt before it reaches the house. BHG’s tester used it with two dogs and three teenagers for six months and reported that it still looked new, with no observed discoloration or fiber shedding.

The mat can be shaken, swept, vacuumed, or rinsed with a hose. It is suitable for indoor or outdoor placement, so it can work at a front door, back door, mudroom entrance, or covered porch. L.L.Bean lists sizes from 18 by 27 inches up to 45.5 by 70 inches, with a 3/8-inch thickness. The polyester fabric contains at least 90% recycled polyester, and the raised border is designed to hold up to 1.5 gallons of water per square yard.
Choose the L.L.Bean Everyspace Recycled Waterhog Doormat if your entry sees pets, children, rain, mud, or constant foot traffic. The primary trade-off is price: it is an investment rather than a bargain mat. Also note that the recommended care is vacuuming, sweeping, shaking, or hosing—not machine washing.
2. Best indoor doormat: Porte + Hall The Insider
The Insider is the best choice when the mat must fit beneath a door without catching, dragging, or creating a trip point. Its ultra-thin construction is particularly useful for interior entries, apartments, hardwood floors, and doors with very little clearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDuring BHG’s testing, it absorbed water without allowing seepage onto hardwood flooring and dried in roughly half an hour. Its jacquard weave also caught some dirt and debris, although it is not designed to scrape heavy mud from shoes or withstand severe outdoor exposure.
Porte + Hall describes the mat as having a 100% jacquard-weave polyester face, an absorbent polypropylene/polyethylene middle layer, and a TPE-containing backing. The listed size is 2 feet 3 inches by 3 feet, and it weighs about two pounds. The manufacturer recommends forceful cold-water rinsing followed by hanging to dry and specifically says not to machine wash it.
Choose the Porte + Hall The Insider Doormat as an indoor companion mat, particularly where door clearance is a problem. The inspected product page showed a regular price of $67 and a sold-out status for the inspected variant, so check current stock before planning around it. It should not be your only mat at an uncovered, muddy exterior entrance.
3. Best budget doormat: IKEA TRIABO Welcome Mat
The TRIABO delivers the basic benefits of a traditional coir mat at a low price. BHG found it sturdy, quick-drying, and easy to clean, making it a sensible choice for a small apartment, balcony entrance, or secondary door.
Recommended Free Tools
IKEA’s U.S. listing identifies the mat as 16 by 28 inches and 3/4 inch high. It is made from 99.5% coir and 0.5% polyethylene with a latex backing, and it is intended for indoor use. Care is simple: shake or vacuum it rather than washing it.
The limitations are important. At 16 by 28 inches, it may not provide enough coverage for a wide front door or an entry where several people walk side by side. BHG also observed some shedding, which is a common issue with thick natural coir fibers.
Rank #2

Choose the IKEA TRIABO Welcome Mat when price and compact size matter more than maximum coverage or all-weather performance. The listed IKEA U.S. price was $14.99 when checked, but retail prices and availability can change.
4. Best design: World Market Black Multicolor Mushroom Forest Coir Doormat
This is the pick for shoppers who want the doormat to contribute visibly to the entrance’s appearance. The mushroom-and-forest motif, scalloped cutout border, and relatively low price give it more personality than the typical plain brown coir mat. It also has a nonslip rubber backing.

BHG found it more decorative than functional. It is better suited to a covered porch, temperate weather, or an interior corridor than to an exposed entrance that receives heavy mud, standing water, or constant traffic. Its smaller-than-average footprint further limits how much dirt it can intercept. Cleaning consists of shaking or brushing it clean.
Choose the World Market Mushroom Forest Coir Doormat for curb appeal, seasonal decorating, or a sheltered apartment entry. Do not select it as your primary barrier against severe weather or large amounts of debris. World Market’s product page confirmed the product identity, but current price and stock should be checked at the time of purchase.
5. Best personalized doormat: Grandin Road Monogrammed Coir Border Doormat
The Grandin Road mat combines a thick, traditional coir construction with a single-letter monogram. It is the most giftable option in the group and suits a classic front porch or housewarming present.
After six months of exposure and daily trampling, BHG’s tester reported no observed fraying, excessive shedding, or discoloration. The tested mat was used on a covered concrete porch with light foot traffic and some sunlight. At about seven pounds, it feels more substantial than a lightweight decorative mat.
The critical drawback is the backing: this mat does not have nonslip backing. That matters at an uncovered or frequently wet entrance, where the mat could move on a smooth surface. A separate nonslip pad may be necessary, but the pad should not create a new door-clearance problem.
Choose the Grandin Road Monogrammed Coir Border Doormat for personalization, thickness, and traditional porch style. BHG listed dimensions beginning at approximately 2 by 3.25 feet and a tested price of $59, but personalized products, prices, and availability are especially subject to change.
6. Best heavy-duty doormat: Mohawk Home Waffle Grid Recycled Rubber Door Mat
The Mohawk Home Waffle Grid is the utility choice. Its deep waffle-grid ridges trap dirt, mud, and water, while the dark color hides stains better than lighter decorative mats. The recycled-rubber backing stayed in place while testers wiped their shoes aggressively, and the mat remained low enough for a standard door. BHG also found that a robot vacuum could pass over it.

It is rated for indoor/outdoor use and described as nonslip and water resistant. Recommended care includes spot-cleaning, vacuuming, or shaking. Which doormat material is best?
Material helps determine how a mat behaves, but it does not tell the whole story. Backing, thickness, pattern, exposure, climate, and cleaning routine can matter just as much.
- Coir: Coarse coconut fiber is effective at scraping debris from shoe soles and generally dries quickly. It can resist mold and mildew reasonably well, but shedding is possible. IKEA, World Market, and Grandin Road use coir-based constructions in this group.
- Rubber: Rubber-backed or rubber-faced mats are practical in rainy and muddy conditions. Grooves and patterned surfaces catch larger debris and help manage water, while a good backing can reduce movement.
- Polyester: Polyester can provide a relatively thin, durable surface suitable for indoor or outdoor use. It is used in the L.L.Bean and Mohawk mats and in The Insider’s face fabric.
- Polypropylene: This material is generally moisture- and stain-resistant and easy to maintain. In The Insider, absorbent materials are used in the middle layer rather than relying only on the face fabric.
These are general material tendencies, not guarantees. A thick coir mat without nonslip backing may be less secure than a thinner rubber-backed mat, and a patterned polyester mat may handle water differently from another polyester product.
Measure the door before buying
A doormat can be excellent and still fail if the door cannot open over it. Measure the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold with the door closed, then compare that clearance with the mat’s actual thickness. Also measure the available width and depth so the mat does not look undersized or interfere with nearby trim.
BHG found that testers occasionally encountered mats that were too thick for the door to open cleanly or too short for the entryway. The Insider is the clearest low-clearance choice. TRIABO is better for compact spaces. The L.L.Bean Waterhog offers the broadest range of listed sizes, but its 3/8-inch thickness still needs to be checked against the door swing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use two mats for better dirt control
For a frequently used entrance, one mat outside and one just inside is generally more effective than asking a single mat to handle every job. The exterior mat scrapes and captures larger debris; the interior mat absorbs remaining moisture and fine dirt.
A practical arrangement is a heavy-duty Mohawk or Waterhog outside, paired with a thin indoor mat such as The Insider where door clearance permits. At a sheltered entry, a coir mat can serve as the scraping layer, but avoid placing a nonslip-backing-free mat on a wet, smooth surface without an appropriate safety solution.
Most homes benefit from at least a front-entry mat and a backyard or mudroom mat. Add mats at side doors, garage entries, or pet-access doors when those entrances receive meaningful traffic.

Cleaning and maintenance
Regular cleaning extends the useful life of a doormat and prevents it from becoming saturated with the dirt it is supposed to capture. Follow the product’s specific instructions:
- L.L.Bean Waterhog: Shake, sweep, vacuum, or hose it.
- Porte + Hall The Insider: Rinse forcefully with cold water and hang to dry; do not machine wash.
- IKEA TRIABO: Shake or vacuum; IKEA lists it for indoor use and does not recommend washing it.
- World Market Mushroom Forest: Shake or brush clean.
- Grandin Road Monogrammed Coir: Use the retailer’s current care directions and protect the mat from prolonged saturation.
- Mohawk Waffle Grid: Spot-clean, vacuum, or shake.
Do not assume that a removable-looking cover is machine washable. None of the six featured winners should be described as machine washable based on the supplied testing and product information.
How long should a doormat last?
There is no reliable single replacement schedule. BHG’s consulted designer estimated that a regularly cleaned and protected mat can last several years, while one exposed to pets, heavy traffic, harsh weather, or constant outdoor use may need replacement after roughly six months. About two years is a broad expectation for many outdoor mats under ordinary conditions—not a warranty or promise.
Replace a mat when it remains wet for long periods, sheds heavily, develops frayed or compressed areas, loses its grip, curls at the edges, or no longer lies flat. A damaged backing is a safety issue even when the surface still looks attractive.
What about buying a doormat from a marketplace?
If you need a broader selection of generic sizes or styles, browse an outdoor doormat category rather than assuming a named BHG winner is available through every marketplace. Exact-model availability for the six tested winners was not reliably established in the research, so verify the model name, dimensions, material, backing, and seller before ordering.
For the best comparison, search by the feature you actually need—such as outdoor doormat, indoor/outdoor doormat, or heavy-duty doormat—and then confirm the product’s door clearance and care instructions. A marketplace listing that uses “Waterhog-style” or similar language should not be treated as the tested L.L.Bean product unless the exact manufacturer and model are confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best doormat according to BHG?
BHG names the L.L.Bean Everyspace Recycled Waterhog Doormat the best overall after six months of at-home testing. It performed especially well for dirt, mud, moisture, pets, children, and heavy foot traffic.
Which BHG-tested doormat is best for a door with low clearance?
Porte + Hall The Insider is the best low-clearance option because of its ultra-thin profile. It is intended for indoor use and should not be treated as a heavy-duty outdoor mud mat.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are any of these doormats machine washable?
Do not assume so. The supplied product information recommends shaking, vacuuming, sweeping, rinsing, brushing, or spot-cleaning. Porte + Hall specifically says not to machine wash The Insider.
What is the best doormat for rain and mud?
The L.L.Bean Waterhog is the best all-around choice, while the Mohawk Home Waffle Grid is the more utilitarian heavy-duty option. Both offer textured surfaces for trapping debris; the Mohawk also has a recycled-rubber backing and low profile.
How thick should a doormat be?
Choose thickness based on the gap beneath the door, not just on how substantial the mat feels. Measure the closed-door clearance and compare it with the manufacturer’s listed thickness. A mat that prevents the door from opening is the wrong size, even if it absorbs water well.
The Bottom Line
Choose the L.L.Bean Everyspace Recycled Waterhog for the best overall balance of dirt capture, moisture control, durability, size choice, and indoor/outdoor versatility. Choose Porte + Hall The Insider for indoor use and tight door clearance, IKEA TRIABO for a compact low-cost coir mat, World Market’s Mushroom Forest for decoration, Grandin Road’s Monogrammed Coir Border for personalization, and Mohawk’s Waffle Grid for low-profile heavy-duty performance.
