1. Best Overall: Frigidaire window air conditioner
BHG’s indexed roundup names a Frigidaire window air conditioner as its Best Overall choice. For most shoppers, this is the logical first product to investigate because a window unit is usually more efficient than a portable air conditioner and does not occupy floor space inside the room.
Before purchasing, open the current product listing and confirm:
#1 Best Overall
- BEST FOR SMALL ROOMS: Cools up to 150 sq ft efficiently with 5,000 BTU cooling power. Ideal for bedrooms, home offices, dorm rooms, workshops, and studio apartments. Compact 16.4" W x 13.4" D x 12.6" H design fits tight spaces.
- QUIET OPERATION - Quieter than many older window AC units, with 2 cooling modes (low 52 dBA for nighttime, high 56 dBA for rapid cooling) and 2 fan speeds for personalized comfort. Simple mechanical controls mean no annoying digital beeps.
- SIMPLE, RELIABLE MECHANICAL CONTROLS: Easy-to-use dials for temperature and fan speed—no Wi-Fi, apps or complex setup required. 10 temperature settings let you dial in your perfect comfort level. Auto restart after power outages.
- LOW MAINTENANCE & ENERGY SMART: No manual draining under normal conditions. Washable, reusable filter for easy care. Low 440W power draw helps reduce energy costs compared to older, inefficient units.
- EASY DIY INSTALLATION: Fixed chassis installs easily and fits double-hung windows 27.125"–36" wide and 13.375" high minimum. EZ Mount kit with foam insulation included. Backed by 1-year GE limited warranty for peace of mind.
- the precise model number and BTU capacity;
- the manufacturer’s recommended room size;
- minimum and maximum window width;
- the unit’s weight and whether a support bracket is included or recommended;
- electrical requirements, including outlet and circuit information;
- whether the controls, timer, remote, or Wi-Fi features match your needs; and
- the current seller, price, stock status, and return policy.
Those checks matter because “Frigidaire window air conditioner” describes a product family rather than one permanently fixed model. A retailer may show several capacities and generations under similar wording. Match the exact capacity to the room instead of assuming that every Frigidaire unit will perform the same way.
Shopping path: Start with the Frigidaire window air conditioner featured by BHG, then verify the model and room-size rating before buying.

BHG identifies a GE window air conditioner as its Best Budget option. GE’s official product information includes a compact 5,000-BTU electronic window air conditioner intended for small rooms up to 150 square feet. That specification illustrates the kind of product that makes sense in a bedroom, office, studio, or other relatively small space.
Do not treat the 150-square-foot figure as a guarantee. Actual cooling demand can be higher in a sunny room, a poorly insulated building, a room with high ceilings, or a space that regularly contains several people or heat-producing appliances. Check the exact GE model associated with the BHG recommendation before using its specifications in a buying decision.
A compact budget unit can be the better choice when the room is genuinely small. Buying a much larger air conditioner does not necessarily cool it better: an oversized unit may reach its thermostat setting quickly and cycle off before removing enough humidity. That can leave the room feeling clammy while increasing purchase and operating costs.
3. Best Design: July air conditioner
July is BHG’s identified Best Design choice. That distinction is useful for rooms where a window air conditioner is visible from the living area or where a conventional appliance would conflict with the décor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Effortless Cooling: Achieve optimal comfort with customizable temperature settings and two fan speeds; Effortless Temperature Control helps to maintain your preset temperatures for consistent comfort
- Easy Maintenance: Keep your air conditioner running efficiently with the easy-to-clean washable filter, designed to capture dust from the air for long-lasting performance
- Undisturbed Comfort: Experience a peaceful home environment with a quiet performance at 52 dBA – ideal for bedrooms or small spaces up to 150 sq. ft.
- Effortless Convenience: Benefit from the Auto Restart feature, which automatically restores the unit's previous settings once power is restored to the window air conditioner
- Hassle-Free Operation: The extra-long three-prong power cord eliminates the need for extension cords, while the adjustable side panels easily extend to best fit your window, ensuring a secure installation with optimal efficiency and airflow
Design should not replace installation and performance checks. Before ordering, verify the current July unit’s:
- cooling capacity and recommended room size;
- overall dimensions and window requirements;
- control method, including any app or remote features;
- noise information and operating modes;
- included installation hardware; and
- availability in your region.
Product lines can change, and a current model may not be identical to the unit evaluated or described when the BHG article was first published. Treat the BHG designation as a useful starting point, then confirm that the available unit is the same model or an explicitly updated replacement.
4. Independent alternative: Midea U-shaped window air conditioner
RTINGS reports purchasing and testing more than 20 air conditioners and highlights the Midea U-shaped MAW12V1QWT as a leading tested window model. Its review describes inverter operation, Wi-Fi control, voice-assistant compatibility, and an advertised 12,000-BTU-per-hour capacity, making it a potentially useful alternative for shoppers with larger rooms or a preference for steadier compressor operation.
The U-shaped design can also leave more of the window opening available than a traditional solid-block window unit, depending on the installation. However, window compatibility, support, sealing, and model-specific instructions still matter. RTINGS also notes that model variants and earlier product issues make exact model matching important.

How to choose the right air conditioner
Match BTUs to the room
Cooling capacity is the first filter. Use the manufacturer’s room-size recommendation as a starting point, then adjust your expectations for the room’s conditions. Direct afternoon sun, poor insulation, high ceilings, frequent occupancy, and a hot climate can all increase the cooling load.
Oversizing is not harmless. U.S. Department of Energy building-science guidance warns that improper sizing can waste energy, increase cost, and cause excessive on-and-off cycling. An oversized room unit may also control temperature without removing humidity effectively. Undersizing can force the compressor to run continuously without reaching a comfortable temperature.
Rank #3
- 6,000 BTU COOLS ROOMS UP TO 250 SQ FT – Electronic window air conditioner efficiently cools bedrooms, home offices, dorm rooms and small apartments. Two-way air direction and multiple cooling modes (52 dBA low, 56 dBA high) let you customize comfort. Ideal for spaces approximately 10x25 feet.
- DIGITAL THERMOSTAT WITH REMOTE CONTROL – Precise temperature control from 64°F to 86°F via LED display and electronic thermostat. Full-function remote included for convenient across-the-room operation. Not WiFi or smart home compatible.
- ENERGY SAVER ECO MODE – Intelligent auto-cycling compressor maintains your set temperature while minimizing power consumption. Uses less energy compared to manual units that run continuously.
- 24-HOUR PROGRAMMABLE TIMER PLUS AUTO-RESTART – Schedule on/off times up to 24 hours in advance to save energy overnight or when away. Auto-restart remembers your settings after power outages so you don't need to reprogram.
- EASY DIY WINDOW INSTALLATION – Fixed chassis design installs quickly in double-hung windows 27.125" to 36" wide and 13.375" high minimum. Includes EZ Mount kit with expandable side panels. Washable, reusable air filter with reminder indicator for easy maintenance.
| Room condition | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Small bedroom or office | A compact unit may be adequate if the room is shaded and reasonably insulated. |
| Sunny room | Use caution with the lower end of a manufacturer’s room-size range; solar heat can raise demand. |
| Open-plan area | Measure the full space the unit must influence. A room-size claim for an enclosed room may not transfer to an open floor plan. |
| High-ceiling or poorly insulated room | Expect the room to need more capacity or improved insulation and air sealing. |
Compare efficiency using the right rating
Room air conditioners commonly use CEER, or Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio, rather than the central-air rating used for whole-home systems. The Department of Energy sets different minimum CEER levels depending on capacity and configuration, including louvered-side, non-louvered, casement, and casement-slider units.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not compare a window unit’s CEER directly with a central system’s SEER2. They are different rating systems used for different equipment categories. When comparing room air conditioners, compare CEER values among similar room-AC configurations and check the EnergyGuide label where available. A higher efficiency rating can reduce energy use, but actual operating cost also depends on capacity, runtime, local electricity prices, thermostat settings, and installation quality.
Confirm that the window and electrical setup are compatible
Many disappointing installations begin with a unit that does not fit the window. Measure before ordering, and check the product manual for:
- minimum and maximum window width and height;
- double-hung, sliding, or casement-window compatibility;
- the required sill depth and sash clearance;
- unit weight and recommended support hardware;
- side-panel or accordion-panel dimensions;
- the outlet type and electrical load; and
- whether the installation leaves the window usable or blocks it for the season.
A window unit must be level and adequately supported according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Seal gaps around the side panels and sash, but do not cover vents or alter the unit in a way the manual prohibits. If the window is high, difficult to access, or requires structural modification, use a qualified installer rather than improvising a support system.
Choose portable only when its flexibility solves a real problem
Portable air conditioners are worth considering for renters, rooms without a suitable window for a window unit, or situations where seasonal removal is essential. They are easier to reposition, but the compressor remains inside the room, and independent testing generally finds portable units less efficient than window-mounted models.

A portable unit also needs an exhaust hose and a window kit. Check whether the kit fits your window type and whether replacement seals or adapters are needed. A portable air conditioner is not automatically the better choice simply because it has wheels.

- Effortless Convenience: Set the 24-hour on/off timer to match your schedule and enable Dry Mode to remove excess moisture from the air, creating a more comfortable environment
Give noise special attention in bedrooms and offices
Noise depends on fan speed, compressor behavior, vibration, installation, and the particular model. Inverter compressors can support steadier operation and may reduce disruptive cycling, but no air conditioner should be described as silent without a specific, documented test result.
For a bedroom or home office, look for the manufacturer’s indoor noise rating and identify the test condition if one is provided. Independent reviews may measure low, medium, and high fan settings separately. Installation is equally important: a loose bracket, poorly sealed panel, or vibrating sill can make an otherwise acceptable unit sound much louder.
Evaluate smart controls as convenience features
Wi-Fi, scheduling, app control, and voice-assistant compatibility can let you pre-cool a room, change settings remotely, or limit operation to occupied hours. RTINGS documents these features on the tested Midea model.
Smart controls do not prove that an air conditioner cools faster, uses less electricity, or costs less to run. Check whether the unit still has usable physical controls, whether the app requires an account, and whether the feature works with your home network. A timer may be sufficient if you do not need remote access.
Installation and maintenance checklist
Before installation
- Measure the window and compare every dimension with the exact manual.
- Confirm the unit’s weight and support requirements.
- Check the outlet and electrical instructions; do not use an unsafe extension-cord arrangement.
- Inspect the window frame, sill, and surrounding wall for damage.
- Plan how condensate will drain without damaging the sill, wall, or exterior finish.
After installation
- Confirm that the unit is secure, stable, and installed at the orientation specified by the manufacturer.
- Seal avoidable gaps around the sash and side panels.
- Run the unit briefly and check for unusual vibration, water entering the room, or electrical problems.
- Keep airflow clear at both the indoor and outdoor portions of the unit.
- Clean the filter according to the exact manufacturer’s instructions.
Filter access, condensate behavior, cleaning intervals, and replacement-filter requirements vary by model. Use the manual for the specific unit rather than applying a generic schedule. Before seasonal storage, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, drying, covering, and removal. Leaving a window unit exposed to winter weather when it is designed to be removed can shorten its life.

When reading any air-conditioner review, look for the product identity, test method, room conditions, test date, and measurements. A meaningful evaluation may include cooling performance, energy use, noise, installation difficulty, controls, and maintenance. RTINGS says its air-conditioner recommendations are based on products purchased and tested in its lab; TechGearLab describes evaluating cooling, energy use, noise, portability, and installation difficulty. Results from one model should not be transferred to a similar-looking model.
Publication and buying checks for BHG’s six-pick list
The live BHG article should be checked before this roundup is treated as a definitive reproduction of all six picks. Confirm:
- the complete six-item list;
- each exact brand and model number;
- the article’s update date and test-room details;
- current specifications and room-size guidance;
- prices, retailer links, and availability;
- any recall, replacement, or discontinued-model notice; and
- whether the available retailer listing is the same unit BHG tested.
Prices, inventory, retailer ownership, and affiliate eligibility are volatile. A product can remain the editorial winner while its exact listing, price, or availability changes.
Bottom line
For a conventional room air conditioner, begin with BHG’s Frigidaire Best Overall path, but verify the model and capacity before purchasing. A compact GE unit is the sensible direction for a genuinely small room and a tight budget. July is the named choice for design-conscious shoppers. If you want an independently tested alternative with inverter operation and smart features, compare the exact Midea U-shaped model rather than assuming it is part of BHG’s list.
The best air conditioner is the one that fits the room and window, has appropriate capacity, uses a suitable electrical connection, and can be installed and maintained safely. Brand ranking comes second to those practical constraints.

Frequently Asked Questions
BHG’s indexed roundup identifies a Frigidaire window air conditioner as its Best Overall pick. Confirm the current article and retailer listing for the exact model, BTU capacity, price, and availability.
What is the best air conditioner according to BHG?
Use the exact manufacturer’s room-size recommendation as a starting point, then account for direct sun, insulation, ceiling height, occupancy, climate, and whether the space is open to other rooms. Oversizing can cause short cycling and poor humidity control.
What size air conditioner do I need?
A window unit is generally more efficient and keeps the compressor outside the room. A portable unit is easier to move and may work where window mounting is impossible, but it needs an exhaust hose and is generally less efficient.
Is a window air conditioner better than a portable air conditioner?
CEER is a room-air-conditioner efficiency rating. Compare CEER with similar room ACs; do not compare it directly with a central system’s SEER2 rating.
What does CEER mean on a room air conditioner?
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with BHG’s Frigidaire Best Overall recommendation, then verify the exact model, BTU capacity, window fit, efficiency rating, and current availability. Choose GE for a properly sized small-room budget solution, July when appearance is a priority, and the independently tested Midea U-shaped model when inverter operation and smart controls are more important.
