Liquor.com found Brotec slower to cool than the stainless-steel options and noticed an external aroma during testing, though it reported no unwanted flavor in the drink. Rinse the stones thoroughly and discontinue use if an odor persists.

4. Eliská Smoky Quartz Whisky Cubes: luxury splurge
Eliská’s hand-sculpted smoky-quartz cubes are made in Brazil. Their appeal is unusual material and presentation rather than evidence of steel-level cooling. Liquor.com reports a four-hour freezing recommendation, so they require more advance preparation than Rabbit’s stated one-hour guidance.

Which whiskey-stone material works best?
Whiskey stones absorb cold in the freezer and transfer heat out of the drink without adding meltwater. Soapstone is the traditional material, while granite, stainless steel, ceramic, and quartz are also used.

Your Best Digs’ 2016 comparison illustrates the gap: Kollea reached 41.5°F, a 22.5°F decrease, and stayed below 55°F for about 65 minutes. The soapstone Teroforma reached 59.5°F, a 4.5°F decrease, and spent zero minutes below 55°F. Those figures apply to that test, not every product made from either material.
How to use whiskey stones
- Freeze them. The Glenlivet recommends at least four hours for stones generally; Rabbit’s product guidance is about one hour. Product instructions take precedence because size and material change freezing time.
- Pour the whisky. The Glenlivet’s guidance is two or three stones for a 25–50 ml pour, with two to four stones typical for a standard serving. Larger drinks may need more.
- Add stones gently. Use tongs when supplied, and lower heavy steel cubes into the glass to protect the rim.
- Wait briefly, then drink. Whiskey stones chill without dilution, so the whisky retains its original concentration and flavor profile.
- Rinse, dry, and refreeze. Clean the stones after use and return them to the freezer according to the manufacturer’s directions. Do not store damp stones in a closed case.
Whiskey stones versus ice
Choose stones when zero dilution is the priority. Choose ice when you want the coldest possible drink and are willing to let melting water soften alcohol heat and open flavors over time. Neither option is universally better: the right choice depends on whether temperature or concentration matters more for the pour.
